  • Pro-justice group urges Oyo Apc to reverse expulsion of chieftains

A group within the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peace and Justice Vanguard, has urged the elders of the party to prevail on the laedership to reverse the expulsion of Hon. Olujide Adewale and Hon. Oyeniran Oyeniyi.

Its statement reads:  “We, of the above Group, and, committed members  of our great Party-All Progressive Congress, wish to appeal to our revered elders, leaders, and all justice lovers within our party to prevail on the party executives to reverse the purported expulsion of the duo of Hon. Olujide Adewale- former Commissioner for Environment in the state and Hon. Oyeniran Oyeniyi- the majority leader of the 7th Oyo state House of Assembly, as widely reported in the media recently.

“This action, in our view, poses great danger to the survival of our party beyond 2019. The personalities concerned, by our reckoning, are dedicated party stalwarts and leaders of their constituency with large follower ship. Our party’s performance in their Local Government- Oluyole, during the last elections attests to this. Can we therefore, as a party, afford to do away with them?

“More so, when their “offence” was, as we all know, that they cried when whipped!, by exploring constitutional means in seeking justice in the face of the failure of the internal crisis resolution mechanism of the party. How could this be an offense in a democracy!Democracies around the globe thrive through the rule of Law.

“The opposition, which is now re-grouping and re-branding should not be allowed to benefit from this self-inflicted crack in our wall. In stead, we should by now be consolidating, empowering and further bonding and growing our membership towards retaining power beyond 2019. The opposition, like the eagle, over the mother hen and her  chicks, are hovering!

“We therefore plead with the Leader of our party in the state;  His Excellency, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi to rally other leaders and elders towards strengthening the party by ensuring that peace and justice prevail in the party; as espoused by Martin Luther King Jr. that “when evil men plot, good men must plan, when evil men shout words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love; and where evil men would seek to perpetuate an unjust status-quo, good men must seek to bring into being a real order of justice”. We know, our Leader is a good man.

Oyo: Tight security as tribunal set to deliver judgement

There was heavy security mounted by thousands of armed to the teeth policemen, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of the State Security Service (DSS), including those on an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) stationed at the High Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan and adjoining roads as the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has began the delivery of its judgment at 10:06am

Also Vehicular and pedestrians movements were fenced off the area while all residential buildings within 60 meters radius of the Isabo high court, the venue of the Tribunal sitting, were also taken over by armed security agents in bids to ensure adequate security around the Court.

The governorship candidate of Accord, Sen. Rashidi Ladoja is challenging the election of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ladoja is challenging the April 11 governorship election in the state in a suit number EPT/IB/Gov/22/2015.

The three-man panel to give the judgement is headed by Justice Muhammad Aliu Mayaki, with Justices Muhammad Karaye and J.E Ikede as members.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade and the NSCDC commandant, led their men to the court.

“We must ensure peace and order and that is why we have stationed our men in strategic places in Ibadan. The people of the State should remain calm and ensure that the peace we have been enjoying is sustained and improved upon,” he said.

Oyebade urged the people of the state to celebrate in moderation and should not breakdown law and order.

  • It’s judgment day in Oyo

    It’s judgment day in Oyo

Anxiety grips politicians in Oyo State as the Governorship Election Tribunal gears up to deliver its verdict on the petition filed by the Accord Party governorship flag bearer in the last general elections, former Governor Rasheed Ladoja, against the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this report, BISI OLADELE examines the case and the expectations of the two sides.

AFTER six months of legal fireworks, the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Oyo State will today deliver its judgment on the petition filed by the Accord Party flag bearer, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, challenging the election of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Expectations are high in the camps of the two leading parties, the APC and the Accord.

Since after the April 11 governorship election, the political scene in the state has been dull; with the two leading figures slugging it out at the tribunal.

After eight months of strenuous political campaigns across the state, Ladoja and his supporters were disappointed with the outcome of the April 11 election, which placed the Accord Party candidate in the second position; behind Ajimobi, who was declared winner of the contest by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). But, as the tribunal delivers its verdict today, Ajimobi and his supporters are a bit optimistic that the judgment would swing in their favour.

According the result declared by INEC, Ajimobi polled 327, 310 votes to beat Ladoja, who scored 254, 520 votes. The candidate of Labour Party (LP), Adebayo Alao-Akala, trailed behind in the third position with 184, 111 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Sen. Teslim  Folarin, was placed fourth with 79, 019 votes. Seyi Makinde of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled 54, 740 votes.

Among other things, Ladoja prayed the tribunal to declare him the winner of the election, saying he polled the highest number of votes in the election. He also prayed the tribunal to declare that Ajimobi’s election were tainted by “acts which clearly violate and breach various provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended including but not limited to rigging and manipulation of election result, unprecedented acts of violence, thuggery, deliberate refusal to use card reader and allocation of votes where election did not hold. “

The Accord Party flag bearer is also seeking the cancellation of the election in 10 local governments. The councils are Atiba, Atisbo, Iseyin, Iwajowa, Kajola, Itesiwaju, Oriire, Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Surulere.  They are also seeking the cancellation of the same in some wards in 11 other local governments.

Ladoja is asking the tribunal to declare him winner of the election, because he secured the highest number of votes, but was marginalized through the irregularities in the above local governments and wards.

Alternatively, the Accord candidate is seeking for a fresh election in the entire state in accordance with the Electoral Act. He is being represented by Chief Richard Ogunwole (SAN).

He joined the APC, INEC and the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Amb. Rufus Akeju, as respondents in the matter.

Ladoja based his prayers on the grounds that Ajimobi’s election is invalid “by reason of corrupt practices and or non-compliance with the provision of Electoral Act 2010 as amended.” He posited, in the second ground that Ajimobi “was not duly elected by majority or highest number of lawful votes cast at the election.”

The Accord candidate tendered 200 exhibits and invited 29 witnesses to buttress his case.

But, Ajimobi and his camp are not folding their arms, wishing that Ladoja will fail in his bid to invalidate the election. His lead counsel Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) has been working hard to puncture Ladoja’s claims.

He called six witnesses. Nevertheless, APC and INEC’s counsels, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Yusuf Ali (SAN) respectively did not invite any witness.

According to Olanipekun, the petition has no precedent on the point of law. The erudite lawyer pointed out that the petitioner failed to ask for certain relieves which he should have sought.

Olanipekun also faulted the petition for challenging the election in places where the Labour Party won. He argued that the petitioner failed to substantiate the case of rigging and violence and urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition. He posited that such petitions be discouraged from being entertained, because it lacked substance.

While adopting his own address, Akeredolu (SAN) submitted that the petition was vague or nebulous in nature. He also posited that it is absurd that the Accord flag bearer is challenging results in local government areas where the Labour Party (LP) won, but that it did not deed it necessary to join the LP in the petition.

The lawyer further submitted that there was no linkage of documents with the petition and that petitioners abandoned their pleading such as ballot box stuffing and rigging. He added that all witnesses failed to establish the claims.

Akeredolu added that the star witness confirmed that he didn’t make use of voters’ register and form EC8A and that this makes his testimony null and void. He said the Accord Party’s evidences had been destroyed while cross-examining the witnesses.

Ali (SAN) urged the tribunal to strike out or dismiss the petition, because it lacks merit. He argued that the petitioner cannot use sentiment or morality, but rather it should be based on facts.

He submitted: “When petitioner fails to establish his case the onus does not fall on respondent to call witness.”

Ali further argued that the mere fact that the petitioner brought election materials to the court shows that there was election. The INEC counsel posited that any party that brings material to the court must be able to link them to his case.

He also pointed out that admission of star witness in the person of a farmer, rather than a professional, punctured the qualification of the said witness to give acceptable evidence. He said the case should be dismissed for lacking in substance.

But the petitioners’ counsel, Ogunwole (SAN), argued that address of counsel could not be substituted for good delivery but facts.

He described submissions raised by respondents as baseless, arguing that it was not necessary to join the LP in the petition and stressed that the respondents failed to support their claims.

During the proper hearing, the tribunal ruled against an application by the petitioner to bring in a ballot paper/forensic expert. It ruled that the application was filed without first seeking the leave of court since it was to be heard after pre-trial.

The petitioners appealed the ruling, but the appellate tribunal upheld the ruling of the lower tribunal.

Now that the stage is set for the judgment, members of the APC are hopeful of victory just as Accord is also hopeful.

The State Chairman of the APC, Chief Akin Oke, said going by the arguments and the entire hearing of the petition, the party is not expecting anything less than victory. The APC chieftain said he attended all the hearing sessions and that it was very clear that the petitioner could not prove his claims.

He said the petitioner could not fault INEC result and materials, meaning that the election was credible.

He said: “Going by the entire hearing, we expect that the APC will coast home with victory on Tuesday.”

The Director-General of the Rashidi Ladoja Campaign Organization, Hon, Adeolu Adeleke, said: “The expectation of Accord as a party is the declaration of Sen. Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the duly-elected governor in the April 11, 2015 election. More importantly, our own grounds are almost the same with the grounds of the APC in Rivers State, which is largely on the issue of Card Readers and incidence form. The only difference is while the Rivers State Chapter requested for cancellation of the poll, we requested declaration of Senator Ladoja as governor.”

Today’s judgment will mark another important milestone in the history of politics in Oyo State.

  • New police post for Oyo community

New police post for Oyo community

The residents of Omi Adio, an urban and rapidly growing community between Ibadan and Abeokuta, have been without a police station for over eight years. But it recently got a modern and befitting police station. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports

Many residents of Omi Adio, the sleepy town in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State would not want to remember the bloody violence that led to the burning of the only police station in the area over eight years ago.

It was a day when scores of people were killed in a faceoff between men of the Nigeria Police and angry residents. They engaged themselves in a shootout which resulted in many casualties.

A resident, Alhaji Abinukan Lasisi who witnessed the violence in 2007 relived the ugly incident. He said: “A ranting policeman accused of snatching the wife of a commercial bus driver, beat and detained the bus driver on alleged frame-up charges. But eventually, the driver died in the police cell.

“This triggered violent protest among the commercial bus operators, and resulted in the burning of the police station.

“The angry drivers were later joined by street urchins who engaged in open confrontation with policemen.

“Acting on self defence, the police, in carrying out the directive of the then Commissioner of Police to shoot at sight, shot at and killed many innocent people.”

Ever since then, the large population of Omi Adio have lived without a police station. They were dependent on the Apata Police Station, some 20 kilometres away from the town.

As a result, security of lives and property have become a source of serious concern for the inhabitants as men of the underworld rule in the community, with free reign of terror on the people.

Hooliganism and thuggery among the youth became a common phenomenon. Many hideouts for criminals also exist, especially in some areas where teenagers openly smoke what is suspected to be Indian hemp as part of recreation.

Also, the commercial life of the people was not spared as reports of robbery and social menace filled the air.

For banks and other financial institutions, transacting business in an environment devoid of security became risky.

Surprisingly, there is no single bank or micro-finance institution in the city because of the absence of police station and other security outposts in the whole of the town.

This explains why industries find their way out of the town, and why economic growth is stifled over the years.

Southwest Report gathered that some banks that opened initially never stayed longer before they closed shop due to frequent cases of bank robbery.

At present, the residents still have to cope with incessant activities of hoodlums, burglary, land snatchers, theft and domestic violence that became unbridled.

However, peace-loving residents recently heaved a sigh of relief when the construction of a modern police station in the city began some years back after over eight years of being without a security post.

Sitting on a two plots of land, the new police which was conceived by the then chairman of caretaker committee of Ido Local Government Area, Prof. Joseph Adeniyi Olowofela has been completed and fenced.

While the people are anxious to see the police station become operational, some leaders in the community have decried the delay by the government to inaugurate the station for the purpose for which it was built.

According to one of the traditional chiefs who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security implications, the residents are still wondering why the police station which has been completed almost a year ago has not been put into use.

He said:”Many things are happening that have been negatively affecting the development of Omi. Where there is no security, there is no development and that is true in the case of Omi.”

Speaking on the development of Omi Adio, the Balogun Olomi of Omi, Chief Mukail Adebayo described the city as a commercial hub nub of Ibadan, Abeokuta and some other surrounding towns.

He said many traders in the Southwest geo-political zone source their foodstuffs and agricultural produce from the ancient Omi Market which has been in existence for centuries.

He described the security of the town as normal in a rapidly developing society, but called on the government to make security of lives and property a priority.

“We used to have a police station here until the sad incident happened. But we are grateful to the former chairman of the local government, Prof. Olowofela who saw the need to build a befitting police station for the town. I hope that the government will soon inaugurate the facility so that the people will enjoy a measure of security. This is a centre of commerce. Don’t forget that Omi is between Ibadan, the largest city in West Africa and Abeokuta, an ancient city too.

“So, there is a great influence of both cities on the livelihood of Omi Adio community because we always see people migrating from one city to the other and the influence of those cities actually rubs off on the life of the community. Essentially, we have people who engage in commercial activities as their means of livelihood.

“We also have technocrats and civil servants. Because of the nature of the place, majority of the people are either traders or farmers,” he said.

For Prof. Olowofela, the unfortunate incident that led to the burning of the police station in 2007 shall never happen again.

He recalled that in 2007, there was a fracas in which many people lost their lives and some hoodlums burnt the police station in Omi Adio.

“However, during my tenure as chairman of the local government, we recognised the importance of a police station in a rapidly growing community such as Omi Adio and the fact that Omi Adio is also very close to the boundary between Ogun and Oyo states which is bakatari. We felt that we should build a police station at Omi Adio.

“And we contacted the Executive Governor of Oyo, Senator Abiola Ajimobi who gave us the resources to complete that. I am quite confident that any moment from now, the police station would be transferred by the Oyo State Governor to the Commissioner of Police so that they can effectively take over the place for the purpose of policing the community,” he said.

Olowefela, a Prof. of Physics also sees Omi Adio as a peaceful town and a place which holds a lot of promises.

He said: “Do not forget that the Nigerian Mining Corporation established by the Federal Government was in Omi Adio because of the abundance of kaolin in the locality and Adio Railway Station was famous in the olden days. The railway station was used for commercial activities whereby people can move their goods from the hinterlands to Lagos and so on and so forth. So, it’s a good community. It boasts hospitable people and it’s very accommodating. The fact that it is situated between two major cities is an advantage to the community. You will find out that many people from Ibadan city are building their houses here in Omi Adio. So, it’s a rapidly developing area.”

As the state government and police authorities meet on the transfer of the newly built police station, expectations are high on the part of the people who anxiously await the return of security post which they hope will further drive socio-economic development in the ancient town.

  • Special incentives for Oyo investors

    Special incentives for Oyo investors

The Oyo State government has offered special incentives to investors seeking Afro-allied opportunities in Nigeria.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi said this in his presentation at a breakout session during the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja.

He said the state offered substantial discount to investors wishing to invest in agriculture, while such lands are acquired with relative ease.

The governor said: “The major advantage Oyo State has over other states today is its size. We are leveraging on our size and vast landmass to grow our economy. There are many industrial giants in Oyo State today who were attracted to the state by our business incentives.

“Oyo State is five times the size of some states. With such size and landmass, as well as the goodwill of the government, there is no business that will not thrive in Oyo State.

“We are also creating a logistic centre, which will have an industrial park, storage and other facilities. We are doing everything possible to ease logistics in and around the state.”

As part of its regional integration agenda, the governor said Oyo State was partnering Lagos State on reforms that would significantly enhance its internally revenue generation.

  • Oyo APC rejects Shittu for minister

Oyo APC rejects Shittu for minister

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the nomination of Mr Adebayo Shittu  from the state for minister.

The party, in a statement yesterday, said Shittu would not serve the interest of the people, adding that he is not a team player.

The statement reads: “The State Working Committee (SWC) of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State met on October 1 and resolved as follows:

“That President Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation for beginning to lead the campaign for laying a foundation for the desired change by Nigerians through his enviable leadership within a short period that his administration was inaugurated.

“That we pledge our unalloyed loyalty and support for the national leadership and levels of our great party while at the same time appreciate the followership for their cooperation in repositioning our dear country.

“That we like to appreciate the fact that going by the 2015 presidential election results, Oyo State performed creditable in terms of contribution of votes to the overall success of our party, in ranking, Oyo State came first in the Southwest with 528,620 votes, third position in the whole South and seventh in the whole federation. Similarly, we won all the three senatorial seats and 12 of 14 House of Representative seats too. This we considered no mean feat.

“Surprisingly, however, our performance has not been commensurately rewarded at the national level.  For instance, Your Excellency, the current power matrix shows that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives hails from Osun State while the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue is a Lagosian. Both in the Senate and House of Representatives, no lawmaker from Oyo State heads any committees that had so far been constituted.

“Your Excellency, sir, the recent media reports of the ministerial nominees from Oyo State in person of Barrister Adebayo Shittu has further compounded our political challenges because of the unacceptability and rejection by the vast majority of our people.

“He is not a team player. Despite the fact that he and his cohorts were fully accommodated in the APC, he exhibited a cantankerous and uncooperative attitude in his relationship with the party and its leadership, which was uncalled for. We can recall that our amiable governor appointed his one-time female running mate as a senior special assistant (SSA) political matters till May 28. Also, the state chairman of CPC as well as the state secretary of the ANPP were equally given commissionership slot in Oyo State. This is a further demonstration of the fact that the state APC does not believe in a winner-takes-all or zero-sum kind of politics.

“It is curious to note that Barrister Shittu refused to bluntly participate in all party activities including campaigns except on one occasion of the presidential rally in Ibadan. Till date, he has refused to participate in party activities or feature in any governmental programmes at all levels.
