    OYSIEC fixes January 16 2027 for LG elections in Oyo

     The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has fixed January 16, 2027, for the next local government council elections in Oyo State.

    The Commission assured residents of the state of a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.

    This was part of the decisions made by the Commission’s leadership at the end of its inaugural meeting with the Commission’s management team at OYSIEC Headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan.

    The inaugural meeting, presided over by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Babatunde Adeniyi, provided a platform to share ideas and brainstorm on how the Commission will deliver on its mandate of conducting a peaceful and acceptable local government council election.

    According to a statement issued after the meeting, elections shall be conducted in all the polling units in the thirty-three local government councils in Oyo State on the above date between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 pm.

    The statement said further that the electioneering campaign shall end by midnight, Friday, 15 January, 2027, while an off or re-run election will be held on Saturday, 23 January, 2027 if any.

    The statement reads: “By virtue of the Local Government Law of Oyo State of Nigeria (as amended), the tenure of the chairmen and councillors in the thirty-three (33) local government councils in Oyo State will expire on the 23rd of May, 2027”.

    “The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission is empowered by Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), to issue notice for the election not later than three hundred and sixty (360) days before the date of the election”.

    “Pursuant to the provisions of Section 28 of the Electoral Act, 2022 ( as amended), Section 5 (a), and Paragraph (1) of Schedule 11 of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, Cap 154 Laws of Oyo State Nigeria, 2000, notice is hereby given that the local government council elections shall be conducted in all the polling units in the thirty three (33) local government councils in Oyo State on Saturday, 16 January, 2027, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 pm”

    The statement, however, urged relevant stakeholders to give their support and cooperation to the Commission to organise and conduct free, fair, credible, and transparent local government council elections on 16 January 2027.

    OYSIEC bids farewell to outgoing chairman Olagunju, commissioners

    The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has formally bid farewell to its outgoing Chairman, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju (SAN), and other members of the Commission.

    Governor Seyi Makinde had inaugurated the outgoing team on September 3, 2020, during which the Commission, under Olagunju’s leadership, successfully conducted two consecutive local government council elections.

    Speaking at the send-forth event organized in their honour by OYSIEC’s management team, Olagunju called for the deployment of career officers with strong knowledge and experience in election management to electoral bodies, noting that this would significantly improve electoral outcomes in the country.

    He described electoral commissions as special institutions that demand professionalism, specialized training, and expertise to continually fulfill their mandates. He further emphasized the importance of retaining experienced OYSIEC staff for future elections.

    Expressing gratitude to Governor Makinde for the opportunity to serve, Olagunju urged the Commission’s staff to remain committed to excellence in their personal and professional pursuits.

    He said, “We thank God for his grace enjoyed for five years we have been on board , we conducted two successful local Government Council Elections Consecutively without any problem.

    “The commitment of the governor Seyi Makinde to the development of the state is commendable, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this process.

    “Conducting credible election demands the services of specialized personnel. There is a need for specialisation of careers for staffs in OYSIEC, frequent transfer or deployment of OYSIEC staffers to another ministry will be a big loss to the commission. 

    “A staff of OYSIEC has special training and expertise on election management which is waisted if transferred to another MDA”.

    In their remarks, the Commission members lauded Governor Makinde for finding them worthy to serve on the commission.

    They urged staffers of the commission not to deviate on the path of good conduct and commitment to duties and also replicate same to those who will succeed the outgoing team to get the desired results.

    In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, OYSIEC, Mrs. Abisola Ogunmola, attributed the success recorded by the commission to the mutual working relationship between staffers of the commission and its leadership.

    She applauded the leadership style of the OYSIEC chairman and the commission members, adding that “your leadership and cooperation have really assisted me with the little achievements I have made during my stay here. 

    “You and the commission members, we appreciate your dedication and all that you have done. We wish you success in future endeavors. Thank you, and God bless you.”

    OYSIEC presents certificates of return to elected chairmen, vice

    The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has presented certificates of return to the newly elected 33 local government council chairmen and vice chairmen.

    While presenting the certificates at the commission’s headquarters, Agodi, Ibadan, the chairman of OYSIEC, Isiaka Olagunju, charged the newly elected officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by the people through good governance.

    Olagunju explained that it was essential for all elected officers to ensure their actions in office conform with the electorate’s expectations, so the electorate will not regret the mandates given to them.

    The OYSIEC boss appealed to the candidates who could not make it during the polls to see it as the will of God, saying that numerous opportunities await them in the future.

    He appreciated the security agencies for ensuring the security of lives and property before, during, and after the election, and also commended the Media, IPAC, political parties, and other relevant stakeholders for the tremendous support accorded the commission all through.

    Olagunju said: “We thank God that there was no loss of life during the just concluded local government council elections. I also appreciate the Media, Security, IPAC, Political Parties, and others for a job well done. I want to appeal to the candidates that don’t make it, in future elections, you will make it because everything is time.

    “Sirs and Mas, you are representing the people of Oyo State, people should not experience any regret, their decisions should be well justified. We equally thank the Governor for the opportunity given to us to serve the people of the state and the support towards conducting the elections,” the OYSIEC Chairman noted.

    Speaking with journalists on the just concluded election, the Chairman, of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Oyo state, Adegbenro Fagbemi, said the election was well conducted, pointing out that the council monitored the seamless distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to all OYSIEC local government offices.

     Adegbenro, who attributed hitches at polling units to the restriction of vehicular movements and fuel scarcity, called on politicians and the electorate to support the winners of the election for good governance.

    LG Poll: 15,000 security personnel deployed for Saturday’s election in Oyo – OYSIEC

    The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) on Thursday, April 25, said 15,000 security personnel have been engaged to ensure the security of lives and properties on Saturday’s local government poll in the state.

    The security personnel according to OYSIEC chairman, Isiaka Olagunju comprises men from Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS), and Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) among others.

    Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, Olagunju urged residents of the state to come out and vote for their choice at the poll, saying their votes would surely be counted.

    He maintained that the commission has a robust collaboration with security agencies in the state to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.

    He said: “15,000 security personnel will be involved in Saturday’s election based on numbers of our polling units.

    “Restrictions on Saturday will start by 6 am and end at 4 pm, the election will start at 8 am and end by 3 pm.

    “Distribution of non-sensitive election material has started since Monday, and we have also begun distribution of sensitive materials since yesterday.”

    He, however, thanked the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde for his support and for creating a level playing ground for both the voters and all political parties in the state.

    Uphold electoral law, OYSIEC charges parties ahead council poll

    The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has charged political parties to uphold laws guiding conduct of Local Government Councils election.

    OYSIEC demanded continued cooperation and understanding of political parties participating in the forthcoming election for free, fair, transparent and acceptable elections.

    Speaking in Ibadan while meeting members of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Oyo State, OYSIEC Chairman, Aare Isiaka Olagunju (SAN), while enumerating plans by the Commission ahead of the poll stated that pasting of voters registers are ongoing across the polling units for eligible voters to verify their names.

    He said Permanent Voter’s Card (PVCs) will be the only document for voting on the day of election as agreed at previous engagements with the political parties.

    While responding to questions and issues raised at the meeting, the OYSIEC boss explained that Police and other security agencies have promised to collaborate with OYSIEC to have a successful election, adding that the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) also known as Amotekun Corps will not be engaged for election activities.

    He appealed to IPAC to present representatives to jointly monitor electoral process, particularly during the distribution and delivery of voting materials across polling units.

    He urged political parties not to compromise with the election guidelines but contribute their quota as true citizens of Oyo state to its development.

    Oyo IPAC Chairman Otunba Adegbenro Fagbemi, said the meeting provided a platform to identify challenges that could be confronted during the election.

    He expressed readiness of IPAC members to observe the distribution of election materials across the seven geopolitical zones of the state. 

    He called for concerted efforts from  relevant stakeholders and residents of the state to have a replica of the last general elections, which he said were  peaceful.
