    Man faces N470, 000 university admission fraud charge

    A 36-year-old man, Sarafa Adeshina, who allegedly collected N470, 000 on the pretext of securing admission into a university for a candidate, on Friday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged

    Adeshina, whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences and
    stealing.

    According to the Police Prosecutor, Romanus Unuigbe, the accused committed the offences with another man still at large between 2013 and 2016 at Myhong Barracks, Yaba, Lagos.

    Unuigbe said the accused collected the N470, 000 from the complainant,Ugoamaka Upkai, with a promise to help her brother
    to gain admission into the University of Lagos.

    “The accused kept assuring the complainant that his brother will be given admission but to no avail.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 311 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in
    like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, who gave the ruling, said the sureties should provided evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Trial has been adjourned until June 28.

  • Siblings docked over scuffle with policeman

    Two siblings, Patrick Asemokhne, 24, and Rebecca Asemokhne, 21, on Monday appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly slapping a police officer on duty and tearing his uniform.

    The duos, of no fixed address, are also accused of dispossessing the officer of some of his valuables.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count-charge of affray, assault and stealing brought against them.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Romanus Unuigbe, told the court that the duo committed the offences on May 4, at Kiniun-Ifa Street, Ifako, in Gbagada, Lagos.

    He said that the siblings got into a fight with one Iyoha Ohireme, a police officer on duty, who waved them down on a commercial motorcycle.

    Unuigbe said the duo, in the scuffle with the police officer,  slapped him on the face, tore his uniform and dispossessed him of valuables worth N205,000.

    According to Unuigbe, the offences contravene Sections 54, 172 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 each, with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

    He said that one of the sureties must be from the father’s side, and adjourned the case until June 26, for trial.

     

  • Driver docked over theft of truck worth N4.5m

    One Jamiu Babatunde, 41, of no given address, appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday charged with stealing his employer’s truck worth N4.5 million.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Romanus Unuigbe, told the court that Babatunde committed the offence on April 26 at Casino Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos.

    Unuigbe said Babatunde worked as a driver for the complainant and employer, Bolarinwa Oluwaseun and stole his M.A.N Truck Diesel worth N4.5 million.

    “When Babatunde was asked about the truck, he said the truck had some electrical problems and caught fire on the way.”

    “Babatunde took his employer to the spot where he allegedly left the burnt truck and there was no truck or traces of fire there’’, he said.

    Babatunde pleaded not guilty to the one count charge of stealing.

    He said the offence contravened Section 278 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P .A. Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties and adjourned the case until June 23 for trial.

  • Man in court over attempted murder, kidnapping

    A 29-year-oldman, Henry Eze, was on Thursday arraigned in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a five count-count charge, bordering on conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, breach of public peace and assault.

    Eze of no fixed address, however, denied all the allegations levelled against him.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, had told the court that the defendant and one other still at large, committed the offences on March 15, about 5 p.m. at Ilogbo Eremi, Lagos

    He said the accused and his accomplice, a naval officer, held one Adebayo Adeyemi against his will, inside the boot of a Mercedes Benz ‘C’ Class with Reg. No. KTU197 EP.

    Unuigbe alleged that the accused tortured Adeyemi with an iron rod, before dumping him inside the boot of his car and drove him round for hours until he became unconscious.

    He explained that the accused and his accomplice, who accosted the complainant (Adeyemi) on allegations of forging a receipt, conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.

    The offences, Unuigbe said, contravened Sections 44 (4), 173, 230 (b), 271 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Laws Cap C17, Vol.3 Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mr P. A. Ojo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ojo adjourned the case until June 21 for trial.

  • Businesswoman faces N795,000 cement theft charge

    A businesswoman, Modupe Mustapha, on Thursday appeared before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with obtaining 300 bags of cement valued at N795,000 on false pretences.

    Mustapha, whose address is unknown, is facing charges of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

    She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    But the Prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, told the court that Mustapha committed the offences on April 24 at No. 21, Sariyu St., Yaba.

    According to him, the accused persuaded the complainant, Ifeayin Ekweme, to give her 300 bags of cement with a promise to pay back after sales.

    Unuigbe alleged that after the accused had sold the cement, she failed to pay the complainant as promised and came up with excuses when he demanded payment.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 stipulates a 15-year jail term for fraud, while Section 285 prescribes three years for stealing.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P. A. Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until June 6 for mention.
