  • Healing hidden scars

    Healing hidden scars

We all have scars, and all of those scars are twinged with memories. I do have scars, from my early years.

Deep cuts from heavy falls on pavements, bruises from falls on the field, a tear from a glass table in a parlour, burns when I tried helping mum out in the kitchen, I’ve literally lost count of it all.

Oh yeah, I had one recently, when I  had a surgery. This one’s way bigger than every of the scars on my skin. The thing is, I know the story behind each one of them.

Days before I had the surgery, I and the doctor in charge got talking. I had been placed under observation, because they were kinda unsure of what was really on with my system.

I gave him my ‘very sad’ look every time he walked into the ward.

I had high hopes of him coming in to say ‘hey, we discovered it really isn’t a big issue yet, you’re discharged’. That didn’t happen.

Back to our small talk, he was telling me they might have to carry out the operation eventually, if the pain I was feeling persisted. He made this statement I’ll always remember, ‘You’ll be fine at the end of it all, trust my abilities and God’s. Cuts do heal but you give it time. It’s all that required’.

I was scared, hell yeah!  But I loosened up a bit, after he said those words.

Scars mark the skin permanently. Due to the traumatic procedure in which they are formed on the skin, It sure takes time to heal. It did take time honestly, I can vividly remember.

I just couldn’t contain the joy I felt exploding through my veins, the very day the nurse told me my dressings for the wound won’t be necessary anymore.

We all carry scars believe it or not. It might not be the ‘dark distinctive spot’ on your arm. But the ones scattered around our hearts. Emotional ‘wounds’ best defines them.

They don’t heal up quickly, some take our whole lifetime before turning into scars.

Scars make us thankful in ways that’s beyond normalcy. Just mere thoughts of how they came to be on that clean/spotless surface makes you appreciate God more.

You’re stronger, delicate but more willful, bolder and more graceful in the way we carry them. And so we never have to hide them.

They are testimonies unspoken meant for the world to see you’re a wonder.  You’re a survivor who bore those pains.

But like light bursting through the dark, you outshone darkness and defeated it.

You became the wonder everyone couldn’t just overlook, cos you shone so bright like the sun that’s never ignored….

You became MADE. Those scars made ‘You’ you and brought you this far.

  • Lagos residents groan with pain over water tariff

Lagos residents groan with pain over water tariff

The Lagos State Water Corporation has introduced a pre-paid metering system for subscribers. Though an optimal means of curbing wastage and monitoring water supplies, residents are, however, groaning under the new pricing regime, describing it as an exploitative burden on the downtrodden. HANNAH OJO and IBRAHIM ADEYEMI report.

At 14, Ayilara Street, Surulere Lagos, a food vendor attends to hungry customers by the roadside, a pepper and tomatoes seller displayed her wares at a vantage point to catch the attention of would-be buyers. Few meters away, a shop owner selling soft drinks fries puff-puff, a local snack with a micro gas.

All three women are united by a common utility: their businesses strive on availability of clean water. Having failed to recharge the pre-paid meter installed by the Lagos State Water Corporation in the compound, the women are forced to depend on water vendors, popularly called mai ruwa for their water needs. With 50 liters selling for N50 or N100 as the case may be sometimes, it’s hard to imagine that these women won’t have to compromise hygiene in order to save cost on water.

“We paid N9, 000 the last time and it didn’t last for more than two weeks. This is a house with one and two rooms’ apartment. So, it is very difficult to monitor how people use water. Each household within the compound now source water from Mai ruwa and you can imagine the effect of having to manage water on sanitation and well-being”, Mrs Arabambi, the caretaker of the house said.

At the Ijora area of Lagos, where incidentally the headquarters of the water corporation is located residents have expressed dissatisfaction over the new metering system. Findings by our reporter at Oke-Oja, an area in Badia, Ijora, revealed how some residents prefer to install boreholes in order to avoid erratic water supply.

Mr. Abdul Rahuf, a resident of Olodan Street in Badia said: “Water supply from the Water Corporation is not stable. Besides, it’s costly. So, most of us resort to use of borehole water system.”

For other residents who cannot afford borehole water system, they are left to engage the services of water vendors who get water from the Water Corporation directly and resell to people. Modupe Bamidele, a middle-aged woman is a water vender at Ijora Oloye; she also shared an unsavoury experience about the new metering system.

“The metering system is really not affordable. The previous means of payment was far better since I usually pay N3, 000 monthly. But now that usage is calculated with a metering system, I pay N20, 000. Of course, it is what we buy that we sell,” she said.

Her stance is corroborated by Aasiatu Adepegba, another water vendor who also patronises the Lagos State Water Corporation.

“We do not just have choice, if we do, we would have explored other means legally. The system evolved by the water corporation is not reliable. In fact, this new metering system is just too costly; thus most people prefer to use borehole water”, she said.

In an encounter which predates the installation of the pre-paid water meters, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Water Corporation, Mr Mumuni Badmus told The Nation that the new metering system, which is part of a public-private partnership (PPP) model adopted by the state, is based on the recommendation of the World Bank as a model for sustainable water supply.

“We are losing more revenue through water waste because we have been charging flat rates and people don’t see the value in that.  So, we are introducing metering systems so that we would be able to account for water we are sending to the public. We are also installing nodal meters in the intersections of every street so that we would be able to account for every drop of water we produce.”

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Lagos State Water Corporation, Mr. Feranmi Akinmuleya denied the allegation of exploitation, urging that Lagosians need to imbibe the culture of water conservation. Insisting that every meter comes with N1, 700 free credits, he said those who are against the metering system are doing so because they want to continue to enjoy free water.

“We introduced pre-paid metering system for customers to have value for their money and only pay for the quantity of water they used. We charge N200 per cubic meter in high density areas, N260 in low density areas and N350 for commercial water usage.

“Water is now regular and many mini-waterworks have been rehabilitated.  The challenge with some subscribers is that they believe they may pay more, as it may not be possible for them to waste water as this will reflect on their credit.

“Lagosians need to imbibe the culture of water conservation. Some other customers are commending us for the initiative,” he said.

However, the development has not gone down well with many of the water subscribers who insist that the new metering system is an anti-people policy which tends towards exploitation. Mrs. Tinu Oyenuga, a school owner in the Surulere area of Lagos flayed the new metering system on the basis of higher rates.

“With disciplined usage, a bill is three times more than the former price. It is too expensive and I see it as another form of oppression. Add this to the cost of energy, tax, land use and refuse disposal. Government should reason with us”, she said.

The Lagos State Water Corporation is responsible for water supply across the state. Bedeviled by continuous population increase, poor infrastructure, failed public-private partnerships, inadequate budget allocation, poor labour practices and unstable power supply, the corporation falls short. Lagos State needs about 700 million gallons a day (MGD) for 22 million residents. With the water corporation producing a little over 250 MGD, there is a gap of over 400 MGD.

The Environmental Rights Action (ERA), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) said only 10 per cent of the population has access to water supplied by the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC).

A report by ERA states that despite the number of water works, water supply remains abysmal due to some dysfunctional water works.

The Lagos State Water Corporation will need $3.5 billion to execute a Water Master Plan. This includes the construction of additional large water schemes by 2020 to cover the water needs of the populace which is estimated to have increased to 733 MGD by then.

  • Magnetic lumbar belt for low back pain

Magnetic lumbar belt for low back pain

A magnet-therapist,  Dr Cyril Omisande of Cyrillic Holistic Health Clinic, answers the second.

    2) I have back pain. I dread physiotherapy. Is there some other invasive treatment I can go for?

Magnet therapy, magnetic therapy, or magnotherapy is a pseudoscientific alternative medicine practice involving the use of static magnetic fields.  Subjecting certain parts of the body to magnetostatic fields produced by permanent magnets has beneficial health effects.

Up to 80 per cent of the population experience low back pain at some time. Lumbar spondylosis is the degeneration or wear and tear of the spinal discs in lumbar spine. Lumbar spondilitis is when there is inflammation in the vertebrae. It occurs in the lower section of the spine.

Lumbar spine made up of five vertebrae. They are joined to each other by intervertebral   discs and ligaments. In the process of degeneration disc loses it water and bovines dry. A disc in its healthy state is soft and electrical though strong. Since it is made of elastic fibres it can be compressed and compression of several discs in harmony can produce a smooth bend in the spine whenever so desired.

    History of back pain

Certain qualities of a patient’s pain can indicate a specific diagnosis. Low back pain can indicate a specific diagnosis. Low back pain radiating down the buttock and below the knee suggests a herniated disk causing nerve root irritation. Other conditions—including sacroiliitis, facet-joint degenerative arthritis, spinal stenosis , or irritation of the sciatic nerve from a wallet-also cause this pattern.

The diagnosis of disk herniation is further suggested by physical examination and confirmed by imaging techniques. Dick herniation can be asymptomatic, so its presence does not invariably link it to the symptom.

Low back pain at night, unrelieved by rest or the supine position, suggests, the possibility of malignancy, either vertebral body metastasis (chiefly from prostate, breast, lung, multiple myeloma, or lymphoma ) or a cuada equina tumor, similar pain can also be caused compression fractures (from osteoporosis or myeloma).

Symptoms of large or rapidly evolving neurologic deficits identify patients who need urgent evaluation for possible cauda equine tumor, epidural abscess or, rarely, massive disk herniation. When a herniated disk impinges a nerve root, pain is the most prominent symptom; numbness and weakness are less common and, when present, are of the magnitude consistent with compression of a single nerve root. Symptoms of bilateral leg weakness (from multiple lumbar nerve root compressions) or of saddle area anesthesia, bowel or bladder incontinence, or impotence (indicating multiple sacral nerve root compressions) indicate a cauda equine process.

Low back pain worsening with rest and improving with activity is characteristic of ankylosing pondylitis or other seronegative spondyloarthropathies, especially when the onset is insidious and begins before age 40. Most degenerative back diseases product precisely the opposite patter, with rest alleviating, and activity aggravating the pain. Low back pain causing the patient to writhe occurs in renal colic but can also indicate a leaking aneurysm.

    Magnetic Lumbar Belt

Magnetic therapy is known to increase general wellbeing by enhancing energy. It has the ability to penetrate all facts of human body and reach every cell. This translates to greater energy and vitality throughout the body as a whole. Consequently, supplemental magnet therapy can help the body revitalise. Magnets help banish ache and pains.

Goodbye to back pain. At last an easy inexpensive, non-invasive and better alternative way to reduce and eliminate pain, using the natural pain relieving qualities of magnetism. Doctors have known for years that the human body is an extensive bio-magnetic field with each cell having specific magnetic value. You feel pain when tiny positively charged electronics impulses “pain signals” are received by your brain interrupt the flow of those impulses and reduce and eliminate pain. The belt is developed to alleviate pain in the lower back and legs. Each belt contains 12 super powerful, scientifically places neodymium and ceramic magnetic delivery APX 4,0000  gauss that attract and stop the pain impulses from reaching your to brain. The results, no more pain naturally, safely and with no side effects. The light weight belt is breathable. It can be worn under clothing comes in small-for waist sizes up to 28 inch, medium-for waist up to  36 inch and large for waist up to 48 inch.

  • Why Twitter eased 140-character pain

    Why Twitter eased 140-character pain

Twitter is giving you more characters to express yourself. The social media platform increased its characters limit from 140 to 280 with effect from November 7, 2017.

According to Aliza Rosen, Product Manager for Twitter: “Trying to cram your thoughts into a Tweet – we’ve all been there, and it’s a pain”.

Earlier in the year, Twitter carried out a research which shows that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for English-speaking users while it is not a problem for the Japanese. “This is because in languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese you can convey about double the amount of information in one character as you can in many other languages, like English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French,” said Rosen.

Understanding that Twitter is all about brevity, the company however believes that 280 words will help users better to express themselves, without editing sentences and using abbreviations often. However, Twitter users are emotional about the change and believe that the app will become cheesy when more words are used. People are expressing their disappointment at the change, which Twitter called: “new, still brief, constraint”.

English novelist and author of Harry Porter, JK Rowling’s reaction was devoid of optimism.

She said: “Twitter’s destroyed its USP. The whole point, for me, was how inventive people could be within that concise framework.”  The entrepreneur and public speaker, Scott Eddy lamented: “Hey #Twitter, instead of giving us 280 characters, how about giving us a few more characters in the bio?”.

In a mocking tweet, a South-African user, Lwazilwaphesheya K. said: “Twitter went from 140 characters to 280.Then from 20 characters in the space given for a name to 50 characters. Next thing we’ll be sending PDF’s up in here.”

Here in Nigeria, Twitter users and social media influencers are also complaining over the extension of Twitter characters to 280 words. In a tweet, popular blogger and influencer Japheth Omojuwa wrote: “Twitter was confused on the business side but got the technical side right. With 280 characters, convergence on confusion is imminent.”

From the research carried out by Twitter, only 0.4 per cent of tweets written in Japanese exhausted the 140 characters space; while nine per cent of tweets sent out in English exhausted the same space. The implication is that more of people who tweet in English need more than 140 characters as more characters are needed to compose words.

In the month of September when the 280-character extension was tested with few users, Twitter discovered some advantages. Some of the findings are: more space makes it easier for people to express themselves; users are still able to keep twitter’s brevity; and more room to tweet results in more engagement.

In response to users’ outrage, Alan Rosen wrote last week: ”We’ll continue listening and working to make Twitter easier for everyone while making sure we keep what you love.”

  • Pain as NRC demolishes illegal structures

Pain as NRC demolishes illegal structures

These people (NRC officials) have finished me. There is nothing my children and I will eat again. As you can see, my source of livelihood has just been destroyed by the Railway Corporation. I don’t know where to start again. As I am talking to you, I don’t have anything again…We are not aware of any rent paid by the occupants of the illegal structures.

So, everything has ended today,” Mrs Adijat Olowonyo, 76, uttered in hushed tone as she sat hopelessly on the rubbles of her wooden shelter demolished by a task force working on the orders of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

Her son, Monsuru, 32, and three grandchildren, who lived in the shanty with her, burrowed through the debris to pick any valuable materials left under the heap of logs and plywood. Looking dazed and forlorn, Mrs Olowonyo, a petty trader, wept in silence as the bulldozer ripped through a row of shanties, leaving a trail of wreckage in a neighbourhood she has lived ‘comfortably’ for 35 years.

“I don’t know where to go from here,” Mrs Olowonyo retorted when the reporter asked what her next move was.

Apparently helpless, she said: “I knew this place does not belong to me, but I did not know I will leave railway line in this (embarrassing) manner.”

Mrs Olowonyo, who is a native of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State, said: “I will return to my village.”

Had she been given ample time to prepare for the demolition, she said she would have suffered minimal loss, because she would have moved her belongings out peaceably to a safe location. But, the notice was short, just as the loss she suffered was incalculable.

This aptly described the tears, pain, agony and anxiety of residents of railway, following the demolition of illegal structures and shanties built along rail track. No fewer than 2,000 shanties have been demolished in the exercise, which began from railway corridors in Mushin to Yaba, Surulere, Oshodi, Ikeja, Iju-Ishaga, Agbado and Alakuko, among others.

The demolition was carried out by NRC Committee for Removal of Illegal Structures led by Mr Anthony Ochuko Onyokoko.

At Mushin axis, the demolition started at 8:00 a.m. when many of the traders were yet to open for business.

The exercise is to pave the way for the commencement of the 155-kilometre Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge modern rail project of the Federal Government, which was launched in February by the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Managing Director of the NRC, Fidet Okhiria, at a press conference said no “illegal structure” built within 50 feet from the railway line would be spared by the corporation’s bulldozers, pointing out that only property owners with valid documents would be compensated.

    Victims’ painful laments

Before the demolition, the railway corridors were dotted with brick and wooden structures, which served as shelters for deprived families and vagabonds. The entire perimeter of the railway corridors used to be separated from the residential area by iron fence placed 50 feet away from the rail track.

As human activities increased around the corridors, the iron fence was pulled down and shanties were raised along the track, leaving a dangerous distance of about four feet away from the rail track. Crimes also thrived in the neighbourhood, because it housed criminals and smokers of Indian hemp.

Some of the residents converted the space for trading, building makeshift shops and kiosks. However, the residents did not just move to occupy the space illegally. They claimed the NRC gave them “informal approval” to build the structures along the railway corridors.

Southwest Report gathered that some of the residents began living on the railway line in the early 1960s and paid regular rent and lease to the railway corporation.

Pa Ebenezer Ogunyemi, whose three-room wooden shelter, was pulled down by the NRC’s bulldozer, claimed he usually paid rent to “designated official” of the corporation. In tears, Ogunyemi was hapless when the structures were pulled down by the NRC.

A 39-year-old single mother of four, who identified herself as Iya Ibeji, said railway line became a new abode for her after she was ejected from her one-room apartment in nearby Akinbode Street. She said she paid rent to the railway corporation through a third party, which initially got NRC’s approval to build the structure.

Iya Ibeji said: “I have been rendered homeless. There is no place in which my children and I will sleep again. Since my husband abandoned us many years ago, we have been surviving on the profit I made from my petty trade. I was ejected from a one-room apartment and I moved to this place some four years ago to start another life. Now that they have demolished everywhere, I don’t know where to go from here. I can’t afford to pay rent for a single room, because houses in Mushin are expensive.”

    Traders count losses

Traders along the demolished railway corridors could not be consoled as they counted their losses. Mrs Kabirat Adeniji, 48, who operated a wholesale store of assorted drinks, rolled on the ground as her three concrete shops were pulled down by the bulldozer. She said she had recently stocked her shops with goods worth N500, 000.

Mrs Adeniji, who said she rented the three shops 18 years ago, said: “These people (NRC officials) have finished me. There is nothing my children and I will eat again. As you can see, my source of livelihood has just been destroyed by the Railway Corporation. I don’t know where to start again. As I am talking to you, I don’t have anything again.”

Mrs Bola Jacob, another trader, who opened a grocery shop in the railway corridor the previous week before the demolition, put her loss at N380, 000, because she did not have the opportunity to move her wares to a safe place.

She said: “I moved to this place in early April, after paying two sets of rents; one to the landlord of the house which my shop is attached to and the other to a railway corporation official. If I had known the government is ready to demolish the structures on railway line, I would not have paid for the shop. I have lost close to N380, 000 worth of goods, because the demolition happened suddenly. I appeal to the government to help me, because I have lost everything I invested in the business.”

Pelumi Aluko, a hairdresser, was lucky. She had moved all her machinery and other handy equipment out of the wooden shanty before the NRC’s bulldozer got to the spot. She, however, regretted paying rent to an NRC official days before the demolition.

    Fifty-Four-year-old

    mosque, churches gone

While traders and residents lamented their losses, members of religious houses built on the railway corridors gathered to take stock of cost of the demolition. No fewer than eight churches, three mosques and two preparatory schools were reduced to rubbles in the exercise.

Imam of a 54-year-old Orire Mosque demolished at Tinuola axis of the railway line, Alhaji Abdulazeez Ajetunmobi, said the mosque was built on the approval of the NRC.

He said: “This mosque was built in 1963 and there was no prior notice for the demolition. We only saw the NRC officials a day before the demolition was carried out. They came to mark residential buildings and shops along the rail track for demolition. We were not told the demolition would be carried out the second day. Had we been notified, we would have started to relocate the mosque’s properties.

I could not quantify in cash the amount we lost after the mosque was pulled down. Only last month, we spent N2.5 million to renovate the mosque and carried out some capital projects. We bought new sound system and mordernised the ceiling. These cost the mosque’s worshippers millions. Everything is gone now.”

Coordinator of a demolished Sunday school of a Pentecostal church adjacent to the mosque, Mr Israel Komolafe, said the exercise took the church by surprise. He said the church had been occupying the space for 16 years and had been paying monthly rent to NRC officials. He said the corporation did not give notice to vacate the space.

Prophet Eri Atobatele whose Cherubim and Seraphim (Ijo Temidire) Church was marked for demolition said he paid N275, 000 six months ago to rent the property. He appealed to NRC not to demolish the church, since it is far from the rail track.

Arguments ensued between the NRC officials and a septuagenarian, Pa Madamidola Aremu, whose property, leased to Cherubim and Seraphim Church, was marked for demolition. Aremu, who claimed to have Queen’s Conveyance approving the perimeter of the property, accused NRC of encroachment on his property. He threatened to sue the corporation if the property is demolished.

    Notorious crime spot pulled down

The demolition is probably a blessing in disguise for those living around Mushin Train Station. What is known as HQ – a dangerous smokers’ spot – was pulled down during demolition. Until it was cleared, HQ used to be dangerous corner for unwary passersby. It was den of narcotics abusers, smokers of Indian hemp and notorious bandits, who carried out their nefarious activities in broad daylight.

Southwest Report learnt that the Lagos police taskforce had cleared the crime site many times in the last 20 years, but the effort was not successful because of the connivance of property owners around the axis whose houses were used as safe haven to store the unlawful items.

The clearing of HQ may have excited the residents and frequent passersby, but it may be a temporary relief until the NRC permanently barricades its corridors from the buildings around the axis.

    ‘They gave us short notice’

The victims complained that the railway corporation did not give them enough time to remove their properties and relocate before the demolition. Some of them could not pick their belongings while the bulldozer cleared the illegal shanties and concrete structures.

Southwest Report gathered that the occupants got notice to vacate the shanties less than 24 hours before the exercise was carried out. It was also gathered that the NRC officials were in the area the previous day to mark the illegal structures for demolition. It took many of the traders by surprise when the NRC officials led a contingent of riot policemen to carry out the demolition the following day.

While they admitted the corridors belong to the NRC, the affected persons accused the corporation of insensitivity, saying NRC was wrong not to give them time to relocate after its officials collected monthly rent from them.

Some of them said the NRC’s Station Manager in Mushin, whose name was identified as Mr Ojo, collected rent in cash on behalf of the corporation.

Mrs Aluko, a hairdresser, said her shop was demolished a day after she paid N2, 000 to the NRC official as rent. She wondered why the occupants were not notified of the demolition before they paid the rents.

In protest, some of the traders besieged the Mushin station of the NRC to get back the rents paid to Ojo, who allegedly ran away on sighting the crowd.

  • How to deal with pain (2)

     Introduction

Earlier on we defined and described what a pain is. In today’s article, we will consider what an acute pain means and how we can take care of it. Acute pain is the body’s normal response to harm such as a cut, pain due to an infection, or other physical hurts. Put in another way, acute pain is a kind of pain that on average lasts less than three to six months, or pain that is directly related to soft tissue damage such as say a twisted finger, a whitlow, boil, or burn.

Acute pain plays a vital role in providing a warning signal that something is wrong and in need of further examination.

We as humans respond to acute pain by our body by developing short term hypertension, rapid heart-beat, facial grimacing, we become restless, our breathing become shallow, we become more guarded, we turn pale , and our eyes becomes more widely opened.

Acute pain may also be associated with significant, unnecessary physical, psychological and emotional distress in us. In a lot cases, if nothing is done to the acute pain, it may become chronic (which we shall discuss later).

    What causes acute pain?

Just about anything can cause acute pain. Let’s make a list. Accidents of any nature that causes any damage to any part of our body: The accidents may be at home or it may not. Home injuries such as falls, oil, water or say hot metal burns, puncture wounds by nails and knives can cause acute pain.

Domestic assault such as between husband and wife may result in cause pain. Sexual assault or forceful sexual entry may also result in acute pain in either sexual partner. Dental injuries such as broken tooth, tooth decay, bitten tongue during eating may all result in painful experiences.

Diseases such as conjunctivitis, sore throat and gum diseases may cause pain. Chest infections such as pneumonia, peptic ulcer disease, obstructions in the intestines are sources of acute pain.

If we allow urine to accumulate in our urinary bladder over a long time even while we are asleep may result in acute pain.

As a lot of women could tell, menstrual periods can be accompanied by various forms of pain. Similarly, skin diseases such as boils can cause acute pain. If you are constipated and you wish to forcefully pass out the stool (poo), the force can lead to a lot of pain as much as the constipation.

Injuries to the spine, leg, hands and head may lead to serious pain. A visit to a medical doctor with the purpose of giving blood for investigations is perhaps one of the commonest causes of pain in healthcare. Still on healthcare, childbirth, surgical operation of any nature, circumcision in children, are causes of pain.

Outside the home, assault on the street and any injury to any part of the body may surely result in acute pain.

Investigations: Do not ignore acute pain for it’s a warning sign of something more serious. Simple causes of pain such as boil may sometimes be taken care at home. If there are multiple boils appearing, its best investigated thoroughly.

Pain that refuses to go away after say 24 hours should be taken to the doctor for prompt attention and investigation. Most pain especially if the pain is inside the body should be attended to and be investigated by the physician. It’s difficult to provide comprehensive investigations that could be done. As may be appropriate, the doctor may do an X-ray if needed.

On the other hand, the investigations may be ultrasound or blood and urine test. The investigations may also be a combination of all of the above. The investigation may also extend to using CT-Scan or MRI to help the doctor in the diagnosis. The key message however is that pain requires attention, prompt attention never mind the cause of the pain

Treatment:  Open wounds may lead to bleeding and infection. Therefore, you should attempt to stop the bleeding first and do so urgently.

Cover the wound with a clean material and then head to the doctor as soon as possible. Usually, the doctor will determine the next course of action to take.

There are some medications that are available over the counter that you may use to stop pain on your own. If these medications are not working, you need to go to your doctor urgently. Paracetamol is widely available across many pharmacies. Indomethacin and ibuprofen are other options but both should be taken with food to avoid peptic ulcer.

Never take steroids without medical advice. Never take steroid with any medication without proper medical opinion. Finally, remember that acute pain is an early warning sign and do not ignore it.

  • How to deal with pain (1)

     Introduction

In this series, we will take a look at the nature of pain, a major, perhaps the commonest health problem. Further, we will examine what causes pain and also how to deal with the short term pain (which in medical parlance is called acute pain) and also long term pain otherwise called chronic pain. Also, we will differentiate between the two and we will advise on how to handle pain which is either physical in nature or distress pain which is mental or psychological in form. In both cases, pain can be severely distressing.

Today, let us focus on the nature of pain.  The name “pain” has its origin in the Greek work ‘poena’ meaning ‘punishment.’ Everyone experiences pain in one form or the other during our life time. Indeed, there is no escaping from pain. Even a yet -child in the womb of the mother experiences pain.

At some times, as children, we will knock our feet against a resistance and the child will shout for help. As a teenager, we may get disappointed as our desire conflicts with our own parents’ or guardians who often may deny the teen of their desire.

The world may also let people down in various ways, leading to mental pain. The elderly may fall and break his or her arm. Housewives may have her finger scalded by hot oil or water in the kitchen. She will feel pain. The farmer may unwittingly cut himself in the farm or be stung by an insect all leading to physical distresses.

    Division of pain:

Pain can be classified as acute (immediate, urgent, happening now) or chronic (long term). It can also be classified as physical or mental (psychological). A pain of a person who suffers a heart burn for 6 months or over is obviously long term and that is chronic whereas, a pain of a foot being knocked against a brick wall is acute. A pain of the mind coming from sudden death of a relative is an acute emotional ache and a pain resulting from an examination that was failed 5years ago is chronic psychological pain.

    Importance of pain:

Acute pain has significant value as its purpose is to safeguard the sufferer. It’s like an early warning system to the body, telling the individual that something has gone wrong and that such person should take care and also take precaution. Take the case of a hot water suddenly touching a part of our body for example. What happens is that the body will react to want to remove itself from such sources of pain. This is a protective function. However, unlike acute pain, chronic pain has passed the phase of providing a warning to us. Chronic pain tells us that a disease is going on in the respective parts of our body.

    What is pain?

According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Pain is “an unpleasant sensation and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage”.  Dictionary Definition of Pain ( as noun) 1. Highly unpleasant physical sensation caused by illness or injury. Synonyms: suffering, agony, affliction, torture, torment, discomfort, ache, aching, soreness, mental suffering or distress. Say “the pain of loss” Synonyms: sorrow, grief, heartache, heartbreak, sadness, unhappiness, distress, desolation, misery, wretchedness, despair, desperation, mental suffering, emotional suffering or trauma.

Further, to quote Encyclopedia Britannica, pain can be regarded, as a complex experience consisting of a physiological and a psychological response to a noxious stimulus (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Also, in general, psychological pain emotional distress either from a current or past situation that has affected one’s life to some degree is known as psychological pain.

We are all the same but different:  We all experience sensation of pain regardless of whom you are. However, everyone has different ways of responding to pain. Due to individual nature as well as cultural ways in which our life has been modified, we may experience and respond to the same level of pain differently.

An example is labor pain in women. While many Northern Nigeria women would hardly show evidence of being in pain during childbirth to the surprise of attending nurses and doctors, the same cannot be said of other parts of Nigeria. A pin prick may result in severe response in one person while the other individual will hardly show that anything has touched him or her.

This is important in the sense that, if a person or child or a friend or even any member of our family complains of pain of whatever source, we should take the pain seriously.

We should not dismiss the person as malingering, pretending or telling lies. We should attend to the person as if we are the one that is feeling the pain. If we ignore the victim of pain, the pain may itself become worse as there is psychological effect of not being taken seriously worsening the feeling of pain.

A wife complaining of pain deserves to be taken seriously as much as the husband becoming a victim of pain.

In the next article, we will take a look at acute pain.
