Death toll in Pakistan shopping plaza fire rises to 67

Death toll from a fire at a shopping plaza in Pakistan’s city of Karachi rose to 67 yesterday after police and a hospital official confirmed remains of dozens more people had been found.

Police surgeon, Dr. Summaiya Syed, said rescue teams were still searching the damaged Gul Plaza in Karachi, where the blaze erupted on Saturday.

Most remains were discovered in fragments, making identification difficult, but the deaths of 67 have been confirmed, she said. Asad Raza, a senior police official in Karachi, also confirmed the death toll. Authorities previously confirmed 34 deaths.

Relations of the missing have stayed near the destroyed plaza and hospital, even after providing their DNA for testing. Some have tried to enter the building forcibly, criticising the rescue efforts as too slow.

“They are not conducting the search properly,” said Khair-un-Nisa, pointing toward the rescuers. She stood outside the building in tears, saying a relative who left for shopping has been missing since the blaze.

Another woman, Saadia Saeed, said her brother has been trapped inside since Saturday and she does not know what happened to him.

“I am ready to go inside the plaza to look for him, but police are not allowing me,” she said.

There was no immediate comment from authorities about accusations they have been too slow. Many relatives of the missing claim more lives could have been saved if the government had acted more swiftly. Authorities have deployed police around the plaza to prevent relatives from entering the unstable structure, while rescuers continue their careful search.

Investigators say the blaze erupted at a time when most shop owners were either closing for the day or had already left. Since then, the Sindh provincial government has said around 70 people were missing after the flames spread rapidly, fueled by goods such as cosmetics, clothing, and plastic items.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though police have indicated that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.

Karachi has a long history of deadly fires, often linked to poor safety standards, weak regulatory enforcement, and illegal construction.

In November 2023, a shopping mall fire killed 10 people and injured 22. One of Pakistan’s deadliest industrial disasters occurred in 2012, when a garment factory fire killed at least 260 people.

Hundreds killed in Pakistan as flash floods sweep through homes

Rescue workers in northwestern Pakistan have expanded relief operations after flash floods killed more than 220 people in a single district.

The mountainous Buner district, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was struck by cloudbursts and torrential monsoon downpours on Friday, triggering flash floods and landslides.

An emergency services spokesman in Buner, Mohammad Sohail, said yesterday that more than half of the damaged roads have been reopened, allowing vehicles and heavy machinery to reach isolated villages.

Crews are clearing piles of rocks and mud dumped by the floods. They were using heavy machinery on Sunday to remove the rubble of collapsed homes after families reported that some of their relatives were missing.

In one of the deadliest incidents, 24 people from one family died in the village of Qadar Nagar when floodwaters swept through their home on the eve of a wedding. The head of the family, Umar Khan, said he survived the floods because he was out of the house at the time. Four of his relatives have yet to be found, he added.

Provincial chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur visited Buner on Saturday and announced that families of the dead will receive payments of PKR2m (£5,230) each. He said tents, food, and clean drinking water are being provided to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Pakistan reaffirms support for Kashmir, condemns India’s actions

The High Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Nigeria has issued a statement marking Youm-e-Istehsal (Day of Exploitation), observed annually on August 5 to denounce India’s 2019 revocation of Article 370 and the subsequent bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the high commission condemned the Indian government’s move, describing it as illegal and unilateral, and an effort to undermine the internationally recognised disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir as well as deprive the Kashmiri people of their right to self-determination.

The high commission emphasised that the abrogation of Article 370, which previously granted semi-autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir was a tipping point in the decades-long dispute, with grave consequences for the region’s political future and human rights conditions.

“Article 370 enabled Kashmiris to independently manage their internal affairs, barring critical areas such as foreign policy and defense. Its revocation brings Kashmiris closer to a state they do not identify with,” the statement read.

It accused the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of exploiting the constitutional change for political gains aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s electoral agenda and the interests of the right-wing RSS movement. It also highlighted that the constitutional change was enacted at a time when no elected government was in place in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rejecting India’s claim of normalcy in the region, the statement said Kashmiris have endured severe human rights violations since 2019, including restrictions on movement, freedom of speech, and the threat of violence from security forces.

The High Commission also recalled the United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 and historical promises made by India’s early leadership, including Mahatma Gandhi, to conduct a plebiscite in the region.

In light of recent military tensions between the two countries, the Pakistani statement linked Youm-e-Istehsal to a broader regional context, citing the successful execution of Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos as a demonstration of national resolve.

The mission underscored the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir issue based on UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

“Pakistan will continue to extend unwavering political, diplomatic, and moral support to the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” the High Commission asserted.

Pakistan approves $4.6bn plan to tackle power sector debt

Pakistan’s federal cabinet has approved a 1.275 trillion Pakistani rupees (approximately 4.6 billion dollars) plan to tackle circular debt in the power sector, aim to restore financial stability and investor confidence.

This is according to the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.

Describing it as a “historic step,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the plan would bring sustainable reforms, reduce fiscal burden, and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure without adding pressure on the national budget.

The six-year plan will be financed through domestic commercial banks at an interest rate 0.9 per cent below the three-month Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR), with repayment spread over 24 quarterly installments, the Ministry of Energy said in a separate statement.

Around 683 billion rupees (2.47 billion dollars) will be used to refinance the Power Holding Company’s liabilities, while the remainder will clear long-standing dues of Independent Power Producers.

The ministry added that annual repayments are capped at 323 billion rupees (1.17 billion dollars), with a ceiling of 1.938 trillion rupees (7 billion dollars) in case of interest rate fluctuations.

Pakistan dismisses India’s cross-border attack allegations

The government of Pakistan has firmly rejected accusations made in the Indian media alleging its involvement in cross-border attacks in Pathankot, Jaisalmer, and Srinagar.

In a statement released yesterday, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rt. Maj.-Gen. Sohail Khan, described the claims as baseless and politically charged, labeling them part of a reckless propaganda campaign aimed at tarnishing Pakistan’s image.

He criticised what he called a recurring tactic by India of leveling accusations without credible investigations, suggesting it is a deliberate strategy to justify aggression and destabilise the region.

“These actions not only threaten regional peace but also reflect a troubling readiness to manipulate misinformation for political or military advantage,” Khan said.

He called on the international community to take note of what he termed “dangerous behavior” and to advise India toward “restraint and responsibility,” warning that any escalation based on falsehoods would be met with firm resolve.

While reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace, Khan emphasized the country’s preparedness to defend its sovereignty.

“Pakistan remains vigilant and will not be deterred by efforts to provoke or mislead,” he said.

The statement also referenced earlier comments by India’s Defence Minister, who claimed that many of the militants killed in Jammu and Kashmir were Pakistani nationals.

Pakistan’s military dismissed those claims as “hollow and reckless,” accusing India of using such narratives to deflect attention from internal challenges and human rights concerns.

  • Father in Pakistan kills U.S.-born teenage daughter over TikTok videos

Father in Pakistan kills U.S.-born teenage daughter over TikTok videos

A father in Pakistan killed his teenage daughter after she uploaded what he considered to be inappropriate videos on the social media app TikTok, police said on Thursday.

The man, said to be in his 50s, recently brought his family back from the U.S. to settle in the South-Western Pakistani city of Quetta, local police chief, Babar Baloch, said.

The father, now in custody, confessed to having shot his daughter earlier this week after she refused to be dressing more modestly and stop uploading what the family considered to be “indecent” videos on TikTok, Baloch said.

Police are treating the incident as a case of so-called honour killing.

Around 1,000 women are killed in Pakistan by close relatives, fathers, brothers and sons on the pretext of saving family honour, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

The killers in most cases escape punishment because of a controversial Islamic clause in laws that allows relatives of the victim to pardon the perpetrator, rights body Amnesty International said.

Pakistan approved a law in 2016 to partially do away with the controversial clause, but that has not proved enough to stop the practice, according to the HRCP.

Death toll rises to 82 after three days of violence in northwest Pakistan

Three days of bitter sectarian gunfights in northwestern Pakistan have killed no fewer than 82 people and wounded 156 more, a local official said yesterday.

Communities in Pakistan’s Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province — near the border with Afghanistan — have clashed for decades.

The latest bout of violence began on Thursday when two separate convoys travelling under police escort were ambushed, killing at least 43 and sparking two days of gun battles.

“The mobile network across Kurram remains suspended and traffic on the main highway is halted,” said the local administration official.

Hero’s welcome for Pakistan’s first gold medallist

Javelin gold medallist Arshad Nadeem arrived to a water canon salute and chants from thousands of supporters as he brought Pakistan’s first Olympic medal home.

Nadeem was met by his family, including his father who placed a garland around his neck to thousands chanting “Long Live Arshad Nadeem! Long Live Pakistan!”, as he touched down in the eastern city of Lahore.

The 27-year old father of two beat defending champion Neeraj Chopra of neighbouring arch-rival India in the men’s javelin on Thursday in Paris with an Olympic record 92.97-metre throw, the sixth best ever.

His triumph is seen by Pakistanis, struggling with an economic crisis and rising militancy, as all the more impressive since Nadeem was born and raised in a mud brick house in an impoverished corner of rural Punjab. As a young man, he trained in wheat fields with homemade javelins.

President Asif Ali Zardari announced on Saturday that Arshad Nadeem would be awarded Pakistan’s second-highest civilian award, the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, for his achievement.

  • It’s a new dawn for cricket in Nigeria, says NCF boss

The feat achieved by the Nigeria’s U-19 cricket tea at the just concluded ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifiers in Namibia has been described as a new dawn for the sport in the country as the Sylvester Okpe-captained side became the first Nigeria team to qualify for a cricket World Cup.

After emerging the overall winner at the six-nation qualifiers held in Namibia following their unbeaten run in the competition, Nigeria became the first team from the continental championship to join top playing cricket nations like Pakistan, South Africa, Afghanistan, Australia, India, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and host – South Africa as teams that had already booked their places at the global championship holding in 2020.

An excited President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Professor Yahaha Ukwenya described the feat as a new dawn for the sport. “As a President, it is great and incredible and I cannot believe the boys have done this. We trained them to be true Nigerians, tough in character and spirit and not giving to anybody and to tell everybody that we are Africa’s largest nation and some of the toughest human beings from the continent are from Nigeria and they played that way. But we had no idea that they will get this far and by match by match, they fought and came out victorious,” Ukwenya said.

For the coach of the team, Uthe Ogbimi, the feat did not come on a platter of gold. “It has been a long trek coming all the way from last year to qualify from the division two to division one and to come to division one and clear everybody is indeed so massive in our heart. We want to thank the federation for allowing us to go to Zimbabwe for a playing tour against strong opposition and it indeed lifted the game of the players. I think Nigeria should celebrate and corporate bodies should rally round the team to support us for the World Cup.”

An elated Okpe said: “We had a little up and down in the game and we must thank God for the success here in Namibia. This qualification means a lot to me and it is the best moment in my life since I started playing cricket particularly to be part of the first Nigeria team to qualify for any cricket World Cup. We will go back to drawing to check our mistakes and correct it before the World Cup.”
