EPL: Chelsea defeat Palace 3-1 to maintain top-four charge

Chelsea strengthened their hold over Crystal Palace with a 3-1 Premier League triumph at Selhurst Park on Sunday, marking their 18th consecutive unbeaten encounter against the Eagles.

The Blues broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Estêvão capitalised on a loose pass from Jaydee Canvot, sprinted past Tyrick Mitchell, and slotted the ball past Dean Henderson.

Palace pressed for a response, but Fernández’s wayward header in his own box almost handed Estêvão a second chance, which the forward failed to convert.

Chelsea doubled their advantage early in the second half. Within five minutes of the restart, Estêvão set up João Pedro, who cut inside Adam Wharton and neatly threaded the ball through Henderson’s legs.

The visitors made it 3-0 when Fernández converted a penalty after Canvot handled Pedro’s shot inside the box.

Crystal Palace’s woes deepened as Adam Wharton picked up two yellow cards in five minutes for fouls on Moisés Caicedo, ruling him out of their next match against Nottingham Forest.

A late Jefferson Lerma header was denied by goalkeeper Sánchez in the 88th minute, but Chris Richards netted a consolation goal, giving the home fans a brief reason to cheer.

Chelsea held on through nine minutes of stoppage time to seal the victory, moving up to fourth place in the Premier League under Liam Rosenior. The win makes Rosenior the first English manager since Steven Gerrard in 2021 to win his first two top-flight matches in charge.

The result extends Crystal Palace’s winless streak to 11 consecutive competitive games.

EPL: Villa hit back twice against Palace to end losing run

Aston Villa twice came from behind in a thrilling Premier League contest against Crystal Palace to earn a draw and end their losing run.

Palace had won just one of their opening 11 games this season but took an early lead when Ismaila Sarr raced on to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s pass and slotted past Emiliano Martinez.

Villa began to grow into the game and equalised 30 minutes later through Ollie Watkins, who rounded Dean Henderson and passed into an empty net to end his five-game goal drought.

Unai Emery’s side were buoyed by the goal and were soon awarded a penalty when Will Hughes fouled Leon Bailey, but Youri Tielemans’ spot-kick was superbly saved by Henderson.

Palace retook the lead 57 seconds later when 21-year-old Justin Devenny, making his second senior appearance for the club, converted Sarr’s cross to finish a swift counter-attack.

Henderson and Maxence Lacroix produced several key interventions to preserve the away side’s lead, but neither could do anything to stop Ross Barkley heading in from a corner with just over 10 minutes left.

The game became end-to-end in the closing stages with Villa piling on the pressure, but there was no repeat of Jhon Duran’s goals from the bench.

Palace maintained their threat on the break and Martinez made a fine save to deny Palace substitute Jeffrey Schlupp, before Jefferson Lerma fired a long-range effort narrowly wide.

Though Villa avoided a fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions, Emery’s side are now winless in their past six.

A point moves Villa up to seventh in the Premier League table, while Palace remain in the relegation zone in 18th.

  • Rainstorms blow off Ekiti monarch’s palace, others

THE palace of Alare of Are-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Ekiti State and other houses in some parts of the state have been blown off following heavy rainstorms.

Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The rainstorm in Are-Ekiti, which began at about 5:30pm and lasted for about two hours at the weekend, was preceded by a whirlwind.

Pieces of roofing sheets, smashed ceiling, electric poles, kiosk and debris of destroyed houses were seen in the affected areas.

Other areas affected included Odo-ode area, Idemorun, Oke-Afin, Ayegunle and Ilawemon.

It was also gathered that another rainstorm on Tuesday affected Ado-Ekiti and other communities like Afao and Igbemo.

Isan Ekiti and Iludun in Oye Local Government were also hit by the heavy rainstorm.

No fewer than 45 houses were specifically blown off in Are-Ekiti with no report of causality.

Some of the affected residents are being accomodated by friends and family members.

Speaking with reporters in his palace yesterday, the Alare of Are-Ekiti, Oba Boluade Adebiyi, lamented that his palace and many other buildings were affected by the heavy rainstorm.

Oba Adebiyi, however, pleaded with the state and the Federal Governments to come to the aid of his community, saying the degree of damage done was beyond their capabilities.

“As you can see, part of the palace roof has been blown off, but that is not my immediate problem now.  My concern now is how to take care of my people that have become homeless by this natural disaster,” he said.

Oba Adebiyi, who said he has contacted relevant state and federal authorities to come to the aid of the community, also appealed to the indigenes of Are-Ekiti in the diaspora to come home and help their people.

One of the victims, Mr. Ayodele Anisulowo of No 18, Odo-Ode Street, whose house was affected, described the incident as massive.

He added that all what he had painstakingly laboured for, for many years have gone down the drain.

“My properties have been blown off with water entering into my room. Everything is soaked and destroyed. This is a serious thing. I don’t know what to do because I am now hopeless and homeless,” he said.

Another victim, an octogenarian and widow, Madam Jibiye Adeleye, lamented that she has been forced to relocate to her father’s house pending the time her children can repair their father’s house.

General Manager of Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Mr.  Olajide Borode, however, told reporters that Are-Ekiti was not the only community affected by the rainstorm.

According to him, Ado Ekiti and some other communities like Afao and Igbemo were equally affected. He added that Isan Ekiti and Iludun in Oye Local Government were also hit by the heavy rainstorm.

He said: “We and NEMA have jointly visited some of the affected areas for on-the-spot assessment of the damages.  More than 30 houses were destroyed in Isan and Iludun.

“Roofs of 40 houses were blown off in Afao. More than 45 houses were affected in Are-Ekiti.  Among the properties destroyed in Afao was the newly completed Gifted Academic.”

But, Governor Kayode Fayemi has commiserated with victims of the rainstorm, which damaged some buildings in Ado-Ekiti and some parts of the state.

He pledged the support of the state government towards mitigating their losses.

The governor has directed the SEMA in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come up with the detailed record of the affected areas and individuals for necessary support.

The governor also appealed to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to move round the affected areas and tidy up damaged electricity poles and cables so that power supply can be restored to the areas.

  • ‘Art was part of my growing up in the palace’

‘Art was part of my growing up in the palace’

In this interview with Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME, Cronwne Art Gallery proprietor  Mr. Omoregbe Erediauwa speaks on his interest in promoting art, why he founded the gallery and his vision for the gallery, among others.

    At the beginning

“It has to do with my background. In the family I grew up, you find art everywhere. And growing older, I now have the maturity to see, like and collect.  Again, it is a personal thing to collect works and it got to a point when storage became a challenge. That brought the idea of setting up an art gallery in 2014.

Initially it was primarily to provide a space for my collection to breath. But much later I wanted to partner artists for a larger collection for public enjoyment. Also, such collaboration would afford me the opportunity to learn fast on the demands of the project because you would find people asking you the right questions to make you improve.

    Vision of the gallery

“To serve as a reservoir where people can get as much authentic information about Edo heritage. We read a lot about Edo heritage from different sources, so we want this gallery to serve as a place to confirm such information. In the long run, if it is possible we should be able to buy back our objects in foreign museums and private galleries. The ground floor is dedicated to modern art while the top floor is for antiquities.”

    Preserving and documenting  the objects

“I am collaborating with officials of National Commission for Museums and Monuments in the areas of preservation and documentation as well as authentication.

    Art business in Edo State

It is unfortunate that the state of art business is low. Hopefully, the present administration has a strong passion for art. Oba Ewuare of Benin also has the same passion. He even has a foundation. However, the bronze guild in Igun Street, Benin City, is inactive. Most of the youths are only interested in travelling out to Europe.

There is a suggestion that in order to revamp the bronze casting guild in Igu, the guild should be redesigned as a vocational school that incorporates academic and craft business. This will prepare the young ones for the future instead of the craze to travel to Europe.

     Projections

“We don’t have resident artists for promotion yet. But we are starting off with the joint art exhibition featuring, Pius Owolabi and Emosivbe Kamere. So, we are providing this as a platform to promote young artists, may be, twice in a year. It ran from June 22 to July 2.”

  • Delta monarch relives palace’s desecration

    Delta monarch relives palace’s desecration

HRH Odjevworo Akpomeyoma Majoroh, Ojeta 11, Ovie of Oruarivie-Abraka, was regal in  a  red frock with a matching beaded  red crown as he sat on a luxurious couch, to receive the  leadership of the apex Urhobo socio-cultural organisation, Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU). They came after an attack on his palace by irate youths.

But beneath this façade, the king is sad and visibly worried by the events of the past few weeks in his kingdom. He is at a loss why his subjects will turn against him unleashing violence of the most unimaginable proportion against the exalted throne of his ancestors.

All is not well with Abraka community, Ethiope East Local Government Area, host to the  Delta State University. It is embroiled in crisis following the beheading of an indigene allegedly by Fulani herdsmen.

The occasion was a fact-finding visit, earlier this week, by the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) led by Chief Osiobe Okotie, its first vice-president.

The royal father described kings in Urhobo land as “an endangered species”, adding not everyone is happy in a system where monarchy is rotational.

His words: “Kings in Urhobo Land are an endangered species. People are extremely jealous of their status, especially in areas where kingship is rotated, everybody is not happy.  This was an excuse for them to do what they wanted to do.”

He said he felt pained by allegations that he had not done enough for his people, adding: “It is unfortunate that my own people will say I am not doing enough. I know what I have done. I know my contributions to the community.”

He said the most disturbing aspect of the whole episode was the deliberate attempt to desecrate the throne by bringing a corpse to the palace, as it is a taboo for a king to see a dead person.

His words: “The youths knew that traditionally it is taboo for a king to see dead bodies and that dead body is forbidden in a palace.”

He said following the desecration of the palace grounds by the actions of the youths , he had to stay indoors for the whole day until the palace was ritually cleansed

According to him, trouble started in the morning hour of the fateful day after he was briefed by the President-General of the community of a murder of his subject allegedly by Fulani herdsmen.

He said: “What happened was on that day which was a Tuesday at about 10.30a.m the president-general briefed me of yet another incident at our farmland Ovre that Fulani herdsmen killed someone. I directed that he got the President of that community and incident the case at the Police Station. I did not get the details that day as I was heading to our ancestral shrine as it is our traditional market day. Upon my return I was briefed on the matter. I ordered that they should get the police and recover the corpse for safety reasons; before I knew it my personal assistant came in to inform me that the youths from my community were moving en masse to the palace with the corpse of the boy. I called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to come with reinforcements. I also put a call to the president-general and the youth leader who informed me that they were outside the palace fence. The vigilante group was also on ground outside the palace. After a while I heard protests outside and the protesters started hitting the gate .I was calm and thinking of the next course of action when I heard the protesters breaking windows panes in the palace. My entire living room was filled with splinters of glasses and guns were booming outside.”

The monarch said the protesters destroyed vehicles parked in the palace grounds, and were in the process of setting the palace, including him and his guests on fire, when the military intervened.

He said after the youths fled they split into two groups, adding that one group headed towards the Hausa quarters and attacked its residents.

He said a major grouse of the youths was that he has refused to supply them with ammunitions to fight the herdsmen ,adding “ Some persons want me to provide ammunitions for them, but I ask am I involve myself in illegality to solve this problem”.

The royal father accused security agencies of being aware of the activities of the herdsmen, but did nothing to check their activities.

He said he was awaiting government action following the intervention of the state government, adding that he hoped that meetings between the Hausa/Fulani leadership and his community and government would provide a workable solution to the problem.

President-General, Abraka community, Dr. Tedwins Emudainowho described the Ovre-Oruarivie forest as “Sambissa Forest”, claiming that with over 2000 herdsmen committing various atrocities ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes the situation was a keg of gunpowder waiting to explode.

He said the immediate cause of the crisis was the beheading of Solomon Ejoor who along with three persons attempted to rescue their mother trapped by Fulani herdsmen in her farm, adding that since 2012 no fewer than 18 persons have been killed in the community.

Chief Osiobe Okotie thanked God for sparing the life of the monarch, adding that the UPU was in the process of convening a forum to sensitise youths to respect constituted authority.

He urged the Federal and State governments to “do something urgently about the Abraka situation before it gets out of hand.”

His words: “We want to use this opportunity to send a message across to the federal/state government to do something urgently about the Abraka situation before it gets out of hand. We cannot sit and watch our people being slaughtered .The UPU is using this medium to send a message to President Muhammadu Buhari to take appropriate action because information getting to us is that the area where this dastardly act occur there are over 2000 herdsmen fully armed raping our women, our daughters. They have taken over our lands .We do not know their mission. It is the responsibility of the government whether federal or state to ensure that the lives of its citizens are protected .The government should as a matter of urgency step into this matter so that people will not be forced to either protect themselves or do anything otherwise, so we want to avoid that .UPU is watching, our eyes are on Abraka.”
