EPL: Palmer scores first half hattrick in Chelsea win

Cole Palmer scored a first-half hat-trick as Chelsea won at bottom-of-the-table Wolves to continue their good run of form under Liam Rosenior.

The forward had four Premier League goals this season before Saturday’s match but almost equalled that tally in just one game as he produced an impressive display.

His first two came from the penalty spot, first converting coolly into the bottom corner after Joao Pedro had been fouled, then sending the goalkeeper the wrong way for his second, again coming after Pedro had been fouled.

Palmer then drove in from Marc Cucurella’s pass to wrap up the hat-trick in the 38th minute, with the Wolves defence having fallen apart.

Those three goals also ensured his name entered the history books as he became the first player in the Premier League to score three first-half hat-tricks.

Wolves were better at the start of the second half with Mateus Mane hitting the woodwork before Arokodare turned in from close range following a corner.

But despite an improved display from the hosts, Chelsea were able to keep them at bay for the remainder of the match.

The win – Chelsea’s fourth in a row under Rosenior – keeps them firmly in the top-four picture. They remain fifth in the table, one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Palmer fractures toe by stubbing it on door

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer will be absent for another week because he fractured his toe when he stubbed it on a door on Wednesday night.

The England forward was set to resume first-team training this week after two months out with a groin injury.

But the 23-year-old will remain out for slightly longer because of the injury to the small toe on his favoured left foot.

He will miss the Blues’ next three fixtures – Saturday’s Premier League game at Burnley, Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Barcelona and next weekend’s match at home to Arsenal.

“He is probably not available for Saturday for sure, Barcelona for sure or Arsenal for sure,” said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

“Unfortunately, he had an accident at home where he hit his toe. It is nothing important, but he won’t be back in the next week.

“I wake up many times during the night – I hit my head, my legs, my everything – so it can happen.”

Palmer’s most recent appearance was during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on 20 September.

The Blues have played 11 games in all competitions since then – winning eight and losing two – and sit third in the Premier League table.

“I think that his team-mates are better players with Cole playing,” added Maresca. “I feel much better when Cole is on the pitch, and we all want Cole on the pitch.

“At the same time, when Cole is not on the pitch, we need to find a solution. The team is doing very well but we are better with Cole. He was almost back with us.”

Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Benoit Badiashile are all available for the trip to Turf Moor.

Chelsea have Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi in their so-called ‘bomb squad’ and Maresca confirmed nothing has changed with the pair, despite the defender’s involvement with the Under-21s and first-team training during the international break.

“Axel and Raheem are Chelsea players,” he said. “Axel is helping the second team, he’s helping the younger players.

“During the international break we had just five, six players here, so we needed some second-team players. Axel was part of some sessions with second-team players, but I think it was just one session with us.”

  • I was wrong, Palmer out for six more weeks – Maresca

I was wrong, Palmer out for six more weeks – Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says Cole Palmer will be out for six more weeks as he continues his recovery from a persistent groin injury.

The 23-year-old forward hasn’t played a competitive match since 20 September, when he was forced off by the recurrence of an issue that first emerged during the Blues’ shortened pre-season following their successful Club World Cup campaign.

Palmer has made just three Premier League appearances this season and is running short of opportunities to impress England manager Thomas Tuchel before next summer’s World Cup.

Chelsea decided to rest Palmer before the international break to give him the best chance of being fit and ready by November – but Maresca has pushed his potential return back to the end of next month.

“I was wrong,” Maresca told a news conference on Friday. “Unfortunately, he needs to be out probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update.”

The Chelsea manager said he was confident Palmer, who scored 15 Premier League goals last season, would not need surgery.

“We try to protect Cole as much as we can,” Maresca said. “The most important thing is when he comes back, he is fully fit.

“The medical staff are not magicians. We hope six weeks are enough. We need to see it step-by-step. For sure, he’s going to be OK.

“He looks relaxed. He has tried to recover from the injury and is doing all the therapy.”

Speaking before his side continue their Premier League campaign away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Maresca conceded Palmer would be a big miss.

“To replace Cole is difficult, because Cole is a very important player for us – probably one of the best players in the Premier League – so to replace that kind of player is always difficult,” he said.

“We don’t have another player like Cole, because Cole is unique.”

Palmer will miss Premier League games against Sunderland, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley and Arsenal, and a League Cup tie at Wolves.

The six-week recovery estimate would also count Palmer out of Champions League games against Ajax, Qarabag and Barcelona, while ruling him out for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.

Maresca rules out Palmer for Fulham game

Cole Palmer has been ruled out of Chelsea’s West London derby against Fulham in the Premier League this weekend with a groin injury while the club are closing in on signing Alejandro Garnacho,  according to manager Enzo Maresca.

Palmer suffered a muscle injury prior to kick off in last week’s 5-1 demolition of West Ham United and the forward has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Maresca said Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile are also sidelined with injuries.

“Cole, we need to see day by day. Romeo and Benoit, I don’t think they will be back after the international break but they will be closer,” Maresca told reporters ahead of Saturday’s early kickoff. I spoke with Thomas a few times, it’s Thomas’ decision (not to pick Palmer). He’s not available tomorrow, so it is quite normal that he has shown he has some problems.”

While Chelsea had no problems without their injured talisman in the West Ham game, Marco Silva’s Fulham could pose a bigger problem and Maresca said they must find a way to cope without him.

CWC: Palmer insists Chelsea confident ahead of PSG showdown

Cole Palmer has said Chelsea are “confident” in their chances of beating PSG in the final of the Club World Cup on Sunday.

Palmer was speaking with DAZN ahead of Sunday’s final. The Chelsea star shared that he attended PSG’s 4-0 semi-final win against Real Madrid, and that the Champions League winners are “probably the best team in the world.” However, he also said he and his teammates are “confident” and that they “have a plan”.

Les Parisiens have looked every bit the favourites through the revamped tournament, beating Inter Miami, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid en route to the final, with an aggregate score of 10-0 over those three ties. Chelsea have had a slightly easier path to the showpiece event, beating Benfica, Palmeiras, and Fluminense.

“We’re excited. Everyone’s ready. You know, you want to play against the best team, and they probably are the best team in the world, but we’re excited and we’re ready.

“They do everything well, we’ve watched the games, but we’ve got a plan and we’re going to try and do it.”

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has shared relief and satisfaction after ending a three-month goal drought in the Blues’ 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The England international sealed the win with a 95th-minute penalty, earning Chelsea a vital three points in their push for Champions League qualification.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Palmer—whose last goal came in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on January 14, 2025—expressed his joy at finally breaking a run of 18 games without scoring.

“I felt normal. S— happens… sorry for my language! I went three months without scoring, but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team.

“Social media nowadays is full of idiots, the trolls, and whatever. I don’t pay any attention to that.

“I’ve scored today, and I’m happy, but it’s only one, and I’ve got to keep improving and try and reach new levels.”

Cole Palmer scored his seventh goal of the season as Chelsea beat Newcastle to continue their impressive start.

Palmer struck early in the second half when his clean strike from just inside the penalty area beat Nick Pope at his near post.

Nicolas Jackson’s fifth league goal of the campaign had given the Blues an 18th-minute lead, when he fired home from Pedro Neto’s square ball after Palmer’s delicious pass set Chelsea away.

But Newcastle were level 14 minutes later thanks to Alexander Isak’s tap-in.

Isak perhaps should have levelled towards the end of the game after rounding goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but his attempt to walk the ball in was thwarted by Chelsea defenders.

Chelsea thought they had a late penalty when Christopher Nkunku went down inside the box under a challenge. It was initially given but the decision was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee after it appeared Nkunku slipped.

In the end, Palmer’s seventh goal in just nine Premier League games secured the three points that elevated Chelsea to fourth in the table.

They could drop to fifth if Arsenal avoid defeat against Liverpool later on Sunday, but Chelsea’s presence in the higher reaches underlines their impressive form under boss Enzo Maresca so far this season.

They have won five of their nine Premier League games under the former Leicester manager, losing only to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are 12th and are now winless in their last five league outings.

The Blues have been keen to reward the England international, who scored in the 2-1 Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain in July, with a deal which will be announced in the coming days.

Palmer is on the shortlist for the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year awards to be announced in Salford next week, and claimed the Premier League Young Player of the Season award for 2023-24.

The Blues face Manchester City on the opening day of the Premier League season on Sunday, with manager Enzo Maresca opening his campaign against his former employers, where he won the Treble in 2022-23 as assistant to Pep Guardiola.

Last season, Maresca led Leicester City back to the Premier League by winning the Championship title.

Chelsea interested in signing Man City forward Palmer

Chelsea have an interest in signing Manchester City and England Under-21s forward Cole Palmer.

It is understood that no official bid has yet been made.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said the Blues may look to bring in one more offensive player during this transfer window, but insists a new recruit would have to fit the right ‘profile’.

Palmer can play in various positions both in the forward line and midfield.

He was part of the England youth side which won the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer.

The 21-year-old has started the season well at City and scored in both the Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla and the Community Shield loss to Arsenal.

City manager Pep Guardiola has previously said that Palmer will not be allowed to leave on loan. West Ham had been interested in signing him earlier this summer but that was thought to be a loan approach.
