  • Police chief parades 13 armed robbery suspects

    The police yesterday paraded 13 persons for alleged robberies in some parts of Lagos.

    Among the suspects was a father of four, Abiodun Oluwa, 34, who allegedly attacked his victims at Atiporomeh in Badagry.

    According to Commissioner of Police (CP) Imohimi Edgal, Oluwa was arrested on August 10, in the roof of his mother’s house, where he took refuge after allegedly robbing a woman.

    Edgal said one locally made pistol with one cartridge was found on him.

    The suspect he had so far stolen four phones.

    He said: “I bought the gun for N20,000. But it is not working. I discovered it was not working. So, I kept it in my house.

    “I robbed a woman but I never knew that she knew me. She went to my mother and reported. Police then came and searched the house, they found the gun and then I was arrested.”

    Edgal said four others – Ezeja Oluchukwu, 29, Tochukwu Samson, 21, Ifeanyi Oshomi, 30, and Tochukwu Matthias, 27 – were arrested for vandalising some parked vehicles at Abesan Estate.

    He said a Toyota Camry EKY361FC, 20 pieces of auto glass winding engine, three pieces of vehicle brain boxes, a car trampoline, two pieces of side mirrors, one black knife and a school bag were recovered from them.

    “Four armed robbers were arrested on August 26, around Olayinka/Cele axis, Itire. They are Toheeb Ogunjimi, 24, Matthew Olumosu, 19, Qudus Akala, 18 and Akintoye Faruq, 18.

    “They were found with one black toy gun, seven phones, a locally made double barrel pistol and one live cartridge.

    “On June 20, at about 6am while Kingsley Ochoma was attending to customers, four armed men forced their way into his warehouse, at Graceland Estate, Isheri-Oshun and held them hostage. In the process, they carted away cartons of phones and accessories worth over N9,000,000.

    “Based on complaint received about the incident, I directed the Officer-In-Charge of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) to commence investigation. The detectives visited the warehouse and recovered some items left behind by the robbers.

    “These items or specimen were critically examined and the observations made were used to unravel the authors of the crime. The chain of events leading to the arrest of the suspects, started on August 14, when Kareem Badmus and his mother Bola Badmus were arrested using two of the stolen phones.

    “During interrogation, they confessed that the phones were given to them by a relation Yusuf Badmus and they led detectives to apprehend him. Search was immediately conducted in the house of Yusuf Badmus and seven of the robbed phones were recovered. Also recovered were two locally made cut to size double barrel guns with three live cartridges, which he hid inside his operational vehicle, a Nissan Quest (BDG339CA).

    “The said Yusuf Badmus later led detectives to arrest his gang members Chimere Njenobi, 26, Dominic Anawo, 36, and Abimbola Austine, 30. Investigation into the case is ongoing and suspects will definitely be charged to court,” he said.

    Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday paraded five suspects for bunkering and pipeline vandalism.

    They were intercepted by NSCDC officials with a truck load of petroleum products concealed in polythene sacks. The products were suspected to have been siphoned from a vandalised pipeline.

    The Commandant, Stephen Lar, said the truck was conveying about 20,000 litres of diesel before it was intercepted last Saturday night on Owerri/Onitsha road.

    He said on sighting the officers, who were on routine patrol, the suspects attempted to escape, but were pursued and caught.

    “When my men saw the truck while on routine patrol on Onitsha road, they pursued and intercepted it. Upon searching it, they discovered that the occupants were conveying bunkered petroleum products concealed in polythene sacks to beat security check.”

    Lar said the vandals had devised a means to beat security check by using vehicles belonging to reputable companies to convey stolen petroleum products.

    “It is worrisome that these criminals use vehicles of reputable companies to carry these products. When you see them, you will think they are carrying cement or other goods.”

    The commandant, who warned youths to keep away from crime, said the suspects would be arraigned after investigations.

    The Lagos State Police Command Friday paraded 25 suspects for various offences allegedly committed since January 27.

    Among the suspects were six aliens from Niger Republic who were nabbed for alleged armed robbery.

    They are Mustapha Musa, Abdulahi Ali, Isah Musa, Seidu Isah, Aliyu Azuma and Yakubu Adamu.

    Their gang also had a Nigerian identified as Isiaka Yakubu.

    According to Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, they were nabbed on January 27, at about 2:30am inside a Nissan Sunny vehicle marked AKD163DW, while going for an operation in Ebute Metta.

    He stated that six cutlasses, an iron cutter and two torchlight’s were recovered from them.

    “While searching the vehicle, various offensive weapons including handsets, a driver’s license and some wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered.

    “The suspects were interrogated and they made confessional statements that they specialised in shop breaking and stealing within Lagos Island metropolis.

    “In the course of investigation, they led operatives of the Anti-Robbery Sqaud to one Alic Hairworld Limited Fashion Queen ACB building in Lagos, where it was confirmed by the complainant that on January 26, at night time, unknown persons broke into their shop and stole N1, 150,000.

    “Six if the seven suspects are from Niger Republic while there is a Nigerian among them. However, a letter has been sent to their embassy for information,” he said.

    Similarly, four suspects were paraded for allegedly robbing guests at a hotel in Alagbado on January 27.

    They are Jimoh Fatai, 28, Isiaka Iyanu, 22, Rotimi Oduola, 26, and Lasisi Muftau, 26.

    According to the police, the suspects robbed guests at Latest View Hotel, located on Baruwa Street, Alagbado.

    Two locally made double barrel short guns and eight live cartridges were allegedly recovered from them.

  • Oyo police parades suspected killer of LAUTECH student

    The Oyo State Police Command has paraded Mr. Alex Akinyemi, an alleged accomplice of one of the suspects involved in the killing of Miss Seun Adaramoye, a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH).

    On June 20, Seun’s body was found by passers-by near a guest house around Under-G area in Ogbomoso.

    Addressing reporters yesterday at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyanganku, Ibadan, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, CID Unit, Dansuki Galadanchi, said following investigations, the owner of the guest house where the body of the deceased was dumped told the police that his security guard was involved.

    “When the owner of the guest house heard about the incident, he told the CCTV engineer to play back the video. He saw where one of the security guards in his home, Akinyemi, carried the body. He reported the matter to the police.

    “The police swung into action. The security guards, Dauda Aliyu and Samuel Ojo, were arrested. When the video was played for them, they identified the person in the film as Akinyemi, who worked as a guard in a guest house at Under-G area, Ogbomoso,” Galadanchi said.

    He said on July 6, the security guard was arrested in Ogbomoso, adding that the body of the student was taken to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem.

    Galadanchi said efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect, Charles Segun Aregbesola.

    The suspect said: “I have been working as a security guard in the guest house for over two months, and I know Segun as a resident of the area. I saw him dump the body about 8am. He said I should not report the incident to the police and threatened to kill me with an axe if I did. He promised to give me N500,000, but has not fulfilled his promise.

    “He said he was not involved in the murder of the student.”

    Also yesterday at the SCID, Wajud Akande, 50, was paraded for alleged conspiracy, stealing and conversion of goods worth N1.2 million.

    According to Daladanchi, on June 5, Alhaji Lawal Mohammed reported that his colleague chartered an Iveco truck with registration number XA 487 MGR to convey 4,554 cartons of soaps valued at N9.12 million from Apapa in Lagos State to Zaki-Biam in Benue State.

    He went on: “But the driver of the truck diverted the goods and sold them at Agbeni market in Ibadan. After investigation, Akande was arrested in his home in Molete, Ibadan where he kept part of the goods.”

    The State Security Service (SSS) yesterday paraded two sus pects held in connection with the twin suicide bomb attacks on St. Andrews Protestant Military Church located in the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State on November 27, 2012.

    The suspects, 18-year-old Ibrahim Mohammed (a.k.a. Alilullah) and Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, 50, were arrested in Kaduna by operatives of the SSS during a raid on their hideout yesterday.

    Deputy Director, Public Relations of the SSS, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, who paraded the suspects before newsmen said the 18-year-old Mohammed confessed to being indoctrinated into the Boko Haram sect by Bashir Madalla.

    The suspect also said that Madalla trained him in the use of fire arms and the production/priming of Improvised Explosive Devices. Madalla was killed during an exchange of fire with security agents last year.

    According to the suspect, the Jaji attack was carried out by one Tasiu and Mallam Lawal who assumed the leadership of the sect in Kaduna upon the death of Madalla. Tasiu and Lawal died in the suicide bomb attacks.

    The teenage suspect stated further that he accompanied the two suicide bombers to the gate of Command and Staff College on the day of the attack.

    He also confessed that he was the one sent to bring the fertilizer used in priming a Toyota Matrix, one of the two cars used in the bomb attack.

    The suspect, who is from a town in the South West, claimed to be a student in a secondary school before he dropped out at junior secondary level on the prompting of a certain Mallam Abdulhamid, an Islamic cleric, who told him that western education is evil.

    The other suspect, Mohammed Idris, claimed to be a yam hawker in his native Jalingo, Taraba State before he was recruited and indoctrinated by a fellow yam hawker named Lawal in August 2012.

    According to Idris, it was Lawal who relocated him to Kaduna and gave him a two- bedroom flat in Rafin Guza area. The apartment also served as the sect’s operational base.

    Idris, who served as motivational preacher and father figure for the sect members, also conducted surveillance on selected targets using yam hawking as decoy. He is married with four children.

    Ogar said the two suspects would be handed over to the military authorities for further investigation, adding that other suspects arrested in connection with the Jaji attack were still being investigated.

    “While appreciating the inestimable cooperation of Nigerians in the war against perpetrators of evil, the service wishes to re-assure members of the public of the collective resolve of the security agencies to bring to an end the activities of unpatriotic elements and restore peace, security and harmony to our dear country”, Ogar affirmed.

    The Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Bonny Island, Rivers State, Capt Chukwuma Okafor, yesterday paraded seven suspected bunkerers at the coastal headquarters of Bonny Local Government Area.

    Lucky Dudun (captain), Paul Efedumor, Isaac Ayomere, Sunday Ekong, Oyowavotu Ogaga, Oshufu Keke and Simple Nashemi were arrested onboard the vessel MT Gulf Sisan in Delta State on November 14.

    Okafor said the suspects were arrested by personnel of NNS Burutu, who were on routine patrol.

    The vessel carried 80 metric tonnes of illegally-refined petroleum product, suspected to be diesel.

    The suspects, their vessel and the product were handed over to the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    The naval commanding officer said the suspects did not have satisfactory documents covering the product onboard.

    Okafor decried the activities of pirates and bunkerers in the Niger Delta.

    He said: “Those involved in piracy and bunkering are enemies of the nation.

    “The Federal Government and the Navy are determined to fight them, until they look for legitimate businesses to do.

    “The nation is having hard time in maintaining the waterways.

    “The Navy is ready to confront bunkering and piracy on our waterways.”

    While receiving the suspects on behalf of the EFCC, its Deputy Detective Superintendent (DDS), Ogbu Chinedu Michael, assured of the commission’s collaboration in the fight against economic sabotage in Nigeria.

    Michael also lauded naval officers for their determination to combat sea criminals, while assuring of thorough investigation and diligent prosecution, if required.

    Army parades suspected UNIPORT students’ killers

    The Nigerian Army has arrested three men suspected to be members of the six-man syndicate that shot dead two students of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    Spokesman of 2 Brigade/Sector Two Joint Task Force, Maj. Mike Etete, spoke while parading the suspects before reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt.

    Maj. Etete said the suspects had also been fingered as those who assassinated a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, believed to be serving in the state.

    He said that the suspects, (names withheld), were arrested after a stop and search operation was carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Task Force at Rumuochara Village in Choba, near Aluu Community in the state.

    “Following the killing of three persons at Rumuochara Village in Choba on Oct. 18, a manhunt was launched for the arrest of the gunmen.

    “At about 1:45 a.m. (yesterday), troops of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Joint Task Force intercepted four gunmen at Choba Junction.

    “An exchange of gunfire ensued between the soldiers and gunmen; consequently, one of the gunmen was killed instantly, one was injured and two others escaped with injuries.

    “Our soldiers did not sustain any injury in the course of this operation,” he said.

    Maj. Etete said after the gun duel with the four suspects, soldiers cordoned-off the area and apprehended two other suspects who allegedly came to support their gang members.

    He said the suspects were quickly arrested while investigation revealed that the two suspects were supplying arms and ammunition to reinforce their gang members.

    The spokesman said that three AK 47 rifles, 272 rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition and 16 magazines were recovered from the suspects.

    He named other items recovered from the suspects as an ash coloured Toyota Avalon car with registration numbers Kano AG 320 MDG, four Nokia phones, one Blackberry phone and identification cards.

    Maj. Etete called on the public and hospitals to report persons with gunshot wounds to security agencies in the state.

    He, however, declined attempt by reporters to speak with the suspects, saying that such move could jeopardise investigations being carried out to arrest two other suspects who escaped.
