  • NLC partners developer on N960b housing units

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in corroboration with a private property developer, Kriston Lally, will develop housing estates of $6 billion (about N960 billion) for its members across the country.

An agreement on this was signed in Abuja at the weekend.

NLC Acting President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, and the Group Executive Vice-Chairman of Kriston Lally EPC, Mr. Mustapha Madawaki, launched the partnership.

Adewusi explained that under the plan, affordable housing units would be provided for about 8 million willing NLC members.

He said: “We, as a labour movement, are worried about the 40 million housing deficit that exists in the country, as revealed by a United Nations (UN) study. This collaboration with Kriston Lally Nigeria Limited is to ensure that a good number of our members have decent roofs over their heads.

“The project is expected to cost about $6billion or N960billion. We consider the two per cent interest rate of the total amount of the property, which will be spread over 15 years, as very attractive and well below what is obtainable in the mortgage environment.”

The NLC chief said the step would prove wrong the notion that trade unionists were only known for making trouble and calling members for strikes.

He explained that the NLC piece of land in Nasarawa State and in other states would be used for the project.

According to him, the congress will reach out to other state governments to acquire land for the project, where it did not have land.

The Group Executive Vice-Chairman of Kriston Lally EPC, Mustapha Madawaki, said the housing units would include bungalows, two and three bedrooms, while the estates would include construction of a four-star hotel with a 180-guests room capacity.

He said: “The opportunity is open to any member of the NLC. Beneficiaries are expected to pay a minimum 10 per cent of the cost and pay the rest over 15 years. All interested persons should do is to pay at any branch of Zenith Bank and we will take over the process from there.”

  • Japan partners Lagos to fight maternal/child mortality

The Japanese Government has given the Lagos State Government medical equipment to fight maternal and child mortality.

The state government will today begin Town Hall meetings in the councils to sensitise people at the grassroots on how to reduce maternal and child mortality.

The Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Mr. Ryuichi Shoji, led a delegation to the Ministry of Health, Alausa, and presented the equipment to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris.

Shoji said the gesture was to improve maternal and child health in Lagos State.

He said: “Looking at the situation of maternal and child health in Nigeria, it is worrisome that the mortality rate is very high, due to lack of health care facilities, medical equipment and medical practitioners.

“We wish to help remedy this situation by partnering Nigerians and the efforts of the Lagos State Ministry of Health in tackling these issues are notable.

“The agreement we are signing today is to provide medical equipment, such as delivery beds and ECG machines, which measure the rate and regularity of heartbeats to 10 PHC among the 57 flagship PHC in Lagos State. I hope that this project will reduce maternal and child mortality rate.”

Idris thanked them and said the gesture would benefit the people.

He said at the Town Hall meetings, the people would be informed of the facilities available for expectant mothers in government hospitals before and after child birth.

The commissioner said: “A major cause of high maternal mortality is lack of information. Many people do not recognise the danger signs of pregnancy and are not aware of the facilities provided by the government.

“At the meetings, expectant and nursing mothers will have access to the two booklets launched by the governor last year to promote mother and child health.

“The booklets are free and are in government hospitals. They contain information on the growth pattern of the child from birth to age five, as well as nutrition.”

  • Oyo partners UI on quality assurance

Oyo partners UI on quality assurance

The Oyo State Government has signed an agreement with the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan (UI) to strengthen the inspection of curriculum delivery in public primary and secondary schools in the state.

The partnership, which will see members of the faculty conduct independent inspection of teachers in the discharge of their duties, is expected to improve quality assurance in public schools in the state.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi explained that the new initiative was among several taken by his administration to redress the abysmal failure of public school pupils in public examinations.

“The recurring abysmal failure of Oyo State students in pre-tertiary institutions public examinations has continuously called for credible and laudable intervention to halt the ugly trend,” he said.

The governor further explained that the poor state of education in the state necessitated the education summit held last year during which stakeholders came up with ideas to rescue the situation.

At the summit, Ajimobi said participants agreed that poor delivery of curriculum, among other factors, was a major cause of the mass failure in public examinations in Oyo State. “This, therefore, called for a review of our school monitoring and inspection, the result of which led to the collaboration.”

The university is expected to re-orientate teachers to develop a more positive attitude to their job, enhance teaching skills, improve performance of students in public examinations as well as submit reports of their inspection to the Commissioner for Education.

Through the partnership, the state hopes to measure the pedagogical skills of the teachers in delivering the curriculum and enhance rigorous supervision and monitoring of academic activities.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Adetokunbo Fayokun, described the collaboration as historical.

Explaining the rationale behind the collaboration, she said: “The need to collaborate with the University of Ibadan became apparently essential when it dawned all stakeholders that there was need to improve productivity by way of developing an achievement tracking mechanism in our bid to reform the sector as a tool to open up the state for holistic development since education remains the veritable tool for development.”

The state had moved up from its 32nd to 23rd position in the last Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) due to improved facilities and extra-mural classes conducted for students.
