SIKIN, PASCAL GET SECOND CHANCE IN ‘TECNOOWNTHESTAGE’

WITH just two weeks to the end of Africa’s first televised karaoke contest, TecnoOwnTheStage, relief came the way of two of the contestants; Kenya’s Sikin and Pascal, who were adjudged to have least impressed the judges.

Both of them got a second chance at winning the coveted prize of $25,000, a recording deal, and a brand new TECNO Phantom 5 smartphone promised by the organisers, when they were asked to take to the stage one more time in the hope of proving to the judges that they were good enough to remain in the contest.

Pascal turned his charm on and upped his game when he came back on stage to perform New Flame, a song originally performed by Chris Brown, Usher and Rick Ross. The judges, Yemi Alade and M.I appeared impressed with his second offering, even though Sauti Sol’s lead singer, Bien, urged him to do something about his voice.

Sikin had her second chance, with Alicia Keys’ Falling, in a performance which earned her a declaration of love from Johnny crooner, Yemi Alade.

With that Yemi announced that no one was going to be evicted from the show and that all four contestants would return for another shot at glory in next Sunday’s episode.

The 11th edition of the show had kicked off with the usual tension, with Vimbai Mutinhiri being the only host, as her partner, Uti Nwachukwu was unavoidably absent. With the recent trend of hosting guest artistes on the show, Vimbai introduced Five Star Music act, Harry Song, who wowed the appreciative audience with his hit gyrating single, Reggae Blues.

Shapeera was the first contestant to take the stage.  Fresh off her awesome performance last week, the Nigerian contestant continued her awesome run with a remarkable rendition of Adele’s, Rolling in the Deep. Her performance made a strong impression on the judges who implored her to remain focused and not to slip.

Nandy was the next in line with her rendition of Vanessa Mdee’s, Nobody. The Tanzanian’s performance was so good that Yemi Alade couldn’t help saying that she liked the fact that Nandy was “fighting again.”

This was followed by Pascal’s first performance of Sam Smith’s, Stay with Me. The Kenyan, who is the last man standing in the competition gave a good account of himself, albeit not quite good enough for the judges. Sikin, the other Kenyan had also done Zahara’s, Loliwe. The judges appreciated her delivery although they noted that she was playing it safe which was affecting her performance.

The four contestants were also asked to share their plans for the prize money should they win the competition.

For Nandy, she had no idea yet what she would end up doing with what was “a lot of money” while Sikin said she would, among other things, get a microphone and a mixer to help with her blossoming music career. Nigeria’s remaining hope in the game, Shapeera Makepeace said that she would use the money to get into the studio and produce some of her songs.

The grand finale is scheduled to hold on February 7, 2016.

    Pascal hails Martins’ recall

Super Eagles coordinator, Patrick Pascal  has applauded the recall of Obafemi Martins into the Super Eagles by Chief Coach Sunday Orgochukwu Oliseh as a welcome development.

Pascal disclosed that the invitation of Sounders striker would motivate the  young strikers such as Odion Ighalo and Kelechi Iheanacho to give their all while on national duty.

“Look Obafemi Martins is an experienced and ageing striker. It will be a shame if Martins is chosen ahead of Ighalo or Ihenacho,” said the ex-Eagles  player.

He said the Super Eagles handler included Martins in the call-up due to his exploits in the MILS  and the call by Nigerians who watched  the striker weekly scoring goals for his club. ”

Martins should see  his inclusion as the last chance to prove that what is doing in the  MLS is not a fluke  by replicating such performance in the national team,” stated the team’s co-ordinator.

“I pray for the striker to perform and give in more than 100% as not to dissapoint the coach and the fans who called for his invitation.”

Pascal regrets Eagles’ loss to Congo

Former Nigeria international Patrick Pascal has described Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying loss to Congo Brazzaville on Saturday evening as unfortunate.

The Super Eagles lost 3-2 in Calabar to Congo, despite going in front with an Efe Ambrose header in the first half.

But the Congolese came back strong to score three goals in both halves even though Nigeria got a late consolation, and Pascal said the result isn’t good enough for the African champions.

“It is quite unfortunate how we lost the game to the Congolese, despite scoring first.

“I would say the result isn’t good enough more so considering the fact that we are African champions,” he said.

Pascal also told SL10.ng that the messy situation in the leadership of Nigerian football has also contributed in the shambolic display on Saturday.

“This may sound unfair but the truth is that the current situation we’ve found ourselves in as it regards the leadership hasn’t helped us one bit,” he continued.

“The embarrassment handed to Chris Giwa says it all as he wasn’t allowed to perform the ceremonial handshake with the players.

“Our next game is against South Africa and we can only play that game if he (Giwa) vacates office as ordered by FIFA.

“Our football is suffering and we cannot keep suffering similar embarrassments like we did on Saturday,” Pascal said

“A big congratulation to the technical crew, players and members of the Nigerian Football Federation on this great achievement.

“Let me also commend the committee on youth development constituted by the Aminu Maigari led NFF for a job well done, making sure the Eaglets triumph at the World Cup. It showed that the committee never rested in terms of players picked within the age bracket, preparation and even at the championship, it is a plus for the committee,” the former Super Eagles player said.

He noted that these Eaglets will be the beautiful bride of Nigeria football at top level if continunity is maintained to see them progress to the U-20s, U-23 and the Super Eagles.

” I am optimistic that the NFF will maintain the developmental level to see these Eaglets move gradually to becoming greater Super Eagles players”.

He further advised that the players should not be in a hurry to sign contracts abroad that will jeopardise their carear but rather to remain focused and nurture their career to enviable height.

Pascal criticises Keshi over unpaid salary

Former Wikki Tourists chairman Patrick Pascal has criticised Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi for taking his salary dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to the press.

Pascal said he was disappointed with the way the matter has been made public, as he believes the NFF is truly broke and is thus unable to pay the remuneration of Keshi and members of his technical crew.

“I feel so sad that issue of salary in any organisation that should be bureaucratically handled has now become a public affair between Keshi and the NFF who are his employers,” Pascal said.

“In all sincerity, I don’t think that NFF will have the money and would not want to pay. The fact that NFF presently is facing financial crisis is no news.”

The former Nigeria international cited the reduced bonuses of the Super Eagles as evidence of the financial challenges faced by the NFF, adding that the Federation has other obligations to attend to apart from the Super Eagles.

“The NFF has a whole lot of issues to handle apart from the Super Eagles; the Golden Eaglets, Falcons and others are there to take care of.”

He however agreed that Keshi had a right to demand his remuneration, but went ahead to accuse the Super Eagles coach of hyping the matter, adding that such actions can only have a negative effect on the image of Nigeria.
