  • Motorists, passengers groan on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

There was heavy traffic on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday.

Passengers coming into and leaving Lagos were stuck at Arepo junction.

They were held in traffic for hours because of the road’s bad spots.

Motorists following a gridlock stretching as far as the Berger Bridge.

Some commercial vehicles about to drive against traffic were prevented by combined teams of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials and policemen.

A motorist heading to Ibadan, Segun Ogunse, told The Nation that the deplorable road was causing long hours of traffic from the Berger Bridge to the bad spot.

”I cannot imagine that these bad spots have been like this for weeks without any effort from the state and federal governments.

“I have spent over three hours on the road since 11am and this is 2pm, I am yet to get to Arepo. A journey that is supposed to last for less than two hours has now turned to five hours. I think this change government should find a lasting solution to the gridlock on this road,” he lamented.

A resident of Mowe in Ogun State, Kingsley Njoku, who was returning from church in Lagos said: “If we are facing traffic on a Sunday like this, what will it look like on Monday, which is going to be a busy day.

“There have been a lot of cries from Nigerians about the poor state of the road, but nobody cares to listen because the road is just getting bad and people now spend hours for a journey of 10 minutes. The Ogun State government cares less and the Federal Government seems to have ignored calls from motorists,” he said.

  • Discovery Air meets passengers, lawyers

    • Set to meet NCAA’s conditions

Discovery Air yesterday began series of meetings with passengers and their legal representatives that lodged complaints with it and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The meeting, it was learnt is part of efforts by the carrier to restore the suspension of its operating license by the NCAA.

The regulator had announced the suspension of the Air Operators’  Certificate (AOC) of the airline over its failure by the airline management to meet certain lapses pointed out in its operations.

Chairman of Discovery Air, Mr Babatunde Babalola said the airline has commenced the resolution of issues raised by the NCAA in its last audit.

Babalola said the NCAA wrote a letter to the airline to inform it of lapses in its operations, which, he said bordered on cancelled and delayed flights during the Yuletide holidays .

  • AirAsia plane with 162 passengers missing

AirAsia plane with 162 passengers missing

The search for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 passengers, including 17 children, was yesterday called off for poor visibility. The aircraft lost contact with Indonesian air traffic control early yesterday.

Before communication was lost, AirAsia Flight QZ 8501 asked to deviate from its planned flight route — from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore — because of weather conditions, AirAsia said in a statement.

There was conflicting information about when exactly the aircraft went missing. AirAsia said contact was lost at 7:24 a.m. yesterday (7:24 p.m. Saturday ET), but Indonesian aviation authorities said it happened earlier, at 6:17 a.m.

“At this time, search and rescue operations are being conducted under the guidance of the Indonesian Civil Aviation Authority,” AirAsia said.

Of the people on board the Airbus A320-200, 156 are Indonesians, three are South Koreans, a Frenchman, a Malaysian and a Singaporean, the airline said.

Seventeen children, including one infant, are among the passengers, the carrier said. Seven of the people on board are crew members.

“Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We must stay strong,” AirAsia Chief Executive Tony Fernandes said on Twitter. He later announced he was travelling to Surabaya, saying most of the passengers are from there.

As news of the missing plane spread, the airline changed the colour of its logo on its social media accounts from red to gray.

The Flight 8501 “was requesting deviation due to en route weather before communication with the aircraft was lost,” the airline said.

From the flight tracking websites, almost the entire flight path appeared to be over the sea.

Bad weather was in evidence in the region at the time, Cable Network News (CNN) meteorologist Derek Van Dam said.

“We still had lines of very heavy thunderstorms” when the plane was flying, Van Dam said. “But keep in mind, turbulence doesn’t necessarily bring down airplanes,” he added.

CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo questioned whether weather would have been a factor in what happened to the plane.

“Ordinarily, the pilots would get the updated weather from air traffic control and, of course, their onboard radar,” said Schiavo, a former Inspector-General for the United States (US) Department of Transportation. “So whether there was (bad) weather in the area would not be a mystery.”

AirAsia is a Malaysia-based airline that is popular in the region as a budget carrier. It has about 100 destinations, with affiliate companies in several Asian countries.

The missing plane is operated by AirAsia’s Indonesian affiliate, in which the Malaysian company holds a 48.9 per cent stake, according to its website.

The Malaysian government said it was ready to offer assistance to Indonesian and Singaporean authorities.

“Very sad to hear that AirAsia Indonesia QZ8501 is missing,” Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Twitter. “My thoughts are with the families.”

The loss of contact with the AirAsia plane came 10 months after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which dropped off radar over Southeast Asia on March 8 with 239 people on board.

The Malaysian Airlines plane, a Boeing 777-200ER, lost contact with air traffic control over the South China Sea between Malaysia and Vietnam.

Searchers have yet to find any debris from Flight 370, which officials believe crashed in the southern Indian Ocean after veering dramatically off course.

US President Barack Obama has been briefed about the missing AirAsia plane, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said, adding that US officials will continue to monitor the situation.

  • Pirates attack passengers

    Pirates attack passengers

Sea pirates at the weekend waylaid a passenger speedboat, injuring travellers and stealing valuables.

It was gathered that the pirates attacked their victims near Kiberi-Bio on the Ogbia-Nembe-Brass waterway in Bayelsa East Senatorial District.

The incident was said to have occurred barely two days after the state chapter of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) ended its strike over insecurity in the waterways.

The attack occurred on a boat travelling from Ogbia to Okpoama in Brass Local Government Area.

The hoodlums, who were said to have struck at 3pm, also made away with the speedboat after forcing the driver and the passengers off.

“They left with two women and two children . We don’t know what they want to do with them,” a source, who pleaded for anonymity, said.

The source, however, said nobody was killed in the attack.

State MWUN Chairman Lloyd Sese insisted that the security situation on the waterways had become frightening.

He said the incident had  justified the strike.

The MWUN chairman said a meeting between the government and the union’s leadership would hold in Yenagoa this week

  • ‘Why passengers are scared’

Poor state of many boats and ferries plying the waterways have been identified as reasons behind the low patronage of water transportation.

The Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Muazu Sanbo, gave the hint in his office at a meeting with operators and stakeholders in the water transportation business.

Sanbo said the authority will soon put in place measures to ensure that all safety requirements are met by operators.

He listed these measures to include compulsory operators’ permits, survey certificate of all water craft used to ply the waterways, use of manifest by all operators and compulsory certificate of competence for all captains driving water craft on the waterways.

Sambo said all operators must obtain their permits, survey certificates as well as stickers in the next three months or face sanction which may include stopping such offending firm from operating.

He noted that the authority has equally printed for the use of all operators a manifest which must be used by all.

He said NIWA’s decision to print the manifest is to ensure the uniformity of the document used by all operators. He also said the advantage of operators insisting on passengers writing their names on the manifest is that it comes handy for insurance claims in case of accident, as well as serving as a source of information on all the passengers on a particular trip.

The Area Manager said all operators must obtain their drivers’ permit from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), before the end of the year.

  • Minister decries foreign airlines harsh treatment of passengers

Minister decries foreign airlines harsh treatment of passengers

Minister of Culture & Tourism Mr. Edem Duke has called on Emirates Airlines to ensure that travellers are well treated while on board their aircraft because they are the main reason why the airline is in business.

He said reports of shabby treatment of by foreign carriers is becoming unacceptable because customers deserve some level of dignity in the way they are handled by providers of air transport services.

Speaking at the Oriental Hotel in Lekki during the launch of Emirates Holiday package last week, Duke disclosed that Nigerians are the most travelled in the world.

He said Nigerian passengers are unique passengers because they do not only travel for leisure, they also spend a lot money in the course of their travel.

“This is why Nigerians are rated as the fourth largest spenders in the world. Nigerians spend big when they travel but that is just what we are. So as Emirates Holidays, you must understand them if you really want to please them,” he said.

Duke urged Emirates Airlines not only to showcase or sell the destinations of other countries to Nigeria, but also sell Nigeria as a destination to other foreigners.

He said the government was poised to improve the tourism sector of the economy, adding that such could only be achieved if the firm worked with the government in making such dreams come through.

Emirates Holidays develops exotic packages for Nigerian travelling to Dubai and other destinations. It also develops packages for Nigerians outside the country to come into Nigeria.

“So Emirates Holidays and Tour Brokers International (TBI) should create products that will make them comfortable,” he said.

Vice President, Business Support, Emirates Airlines, Mr. Fabio Prestijacopo, noted that the firm was working in conjunction with Tour Brokers International (TBI) as its local partner in Nigeria to sell the best holiday packages to Nigeria to travel all across the world.

He further pointed out that the main drive behind the holiday packages during to showcase the forthcoming Dubai shopping festival that is comes in January and February 2014 .

  • Passengers stranded as strike cripples airports

Passengers stranded as strike cripples airports

Scores of air passengers were yesterday stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) as unions at the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) embarked on an indefinite strike.

The workers, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that the strike was to press home their demand for the implementation of the salary structure approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

The unions are the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE).

NAN reports that the situation had compelled senior management staff of NAMA to take charge of the control towers.

Armed policemen were also stationed at the entrance of NAMA headquarters, to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

A union member, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that there were no international flights going out or coming into the country because of the strike.

“Those ones coming in were diverted to Niger Republic Airspace, causing the country to lose revenue.

“As at 9:00 a.m., only eight domestic airlines had been air borne, as against the 20 we should have recorded on a normal day,” the source said .

Some passengers, who spoke to NAN, urged NAMA management and the unions to resolve the crisis without delay.

An Abuja-bound passenger, Mr Deji Elumoye, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, urged the unions and NAMA management to resolve their differences by fulfilling the agreements they both reached.

“NAMA should pay the backlog of arrears it is owing the workers, while the unions should shift grounds to allow for meaningful negotiations and the resolution of the matter,” Elumoye said.

The NUJ chairman, who said he was going for a meeting in Abuja, had to seek a refund from the airline after waiting for two hours without the flight taking off.

Mrs Biola Olayiwola, another passengers travelling to Abuja, also called for closer collaboration between the NAMA management and the unions because they both needed themselves for the survival of the sector.

Malam Ibraheem Aliyu, who was travelling to Kano, said that he was not aware of the strike until he got to the airport.

“I have bought my ticket and the airline operators did not tell me anything to the contrary. You could see that the terminal is filled with passengers waiting to board their flights,” Aliyu said.

At about noon, the leadership of the unions chased out NAMA staff from their offices, stressing that if the outcome of the meeting with the Ministers of Aviation and Labour did not favour them, the strike would continue.

The unions in a statement signed by Messrs Olayinka Abioye, Abdulkareem Motajo and Aba Ocheme, their acting secretary-generals, described the strike as a “successful one” and warned the flying passengers’ not to fly.

They also warned the flying public not to endanger their lives by flying, adding that it was NAMA’s management staff that were drafted to take charge of the control towers and serving as air traffic controllers (ATCS).

The unions, however, advised the flying public, the Airlines and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority on the danger inherent in a situation whereby NAMA’s management personnel now served as air traffic controllers.

“These management staff do not have the prerequisite validation for various air traffic control service facilities and systems, Aeronautical Information Services, Aeronautical Communications and Air Traffic Engineering Services.

“This is contrary to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and recommended practices in security and safety,” the statement said.

The unions said that this seeming infraction on the part of NAMA management was another exhibition of its culture of impunity which portends grave consequences and danger for the flying public.

“Airlines and Pilots receiving directives and instructions from these categories of personnel are doing so at their own risk.

“Neither the unions nor the real workers of NAMA shall be held accountable in case of any incident or accidents as those flying these planes are flying into the unknown,” the statement said.

Mr Supo Atobatele, General Manager, Public Affairs, NAMA, in a telephone interview with NAN said that the agency’s senior management staff had been drafted to the control towers.

“All NAMA personnel are technically sound to do the jobs they are trained and employed to do.

“The flying public should not allow the unions to dampen their spirits with the excuses that the senior management staff of NAMA cannot handle the control towers.

“The flying public should not nurse any fear regarding their safety because these are the instructors that trained the air traffic controllers,” Atobatele said.

He added that it is only the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as the regulatory agency that can disqualify anybody and not the unions.

“All airlines should continue with their flight schedules as NAMA has not issued them any notice that the nation’s airspace had been shut,” he said.

Officials of the airline declined comments on the strike situation.
