Eno vows to end electricity nightmare in Akwa Ibom

Cognizant of its critical role in realising the state’s economic vision, Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has launched a bold initiative to transform the state’s electricity landscape, prioritizing optimal availability, affordability, and accessibility.

Speaking while declaring open a two-day State’s Electricity Summit at Four-Points By Sheraton in Ikot Ekpene, the Governor said the summit marks a turning point in the electricity sector of the State.

“For decades, our people have lived with the paradox of great energy potential but could not fully appropriate the gift. We are blessed with abundance of gas, a state-owned power plant, yet too many of our homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals are grappling with epileptic power supply,” he stated.

Eno queried the rationale behind the State-owned Ibom Power Company with installed capacity of 191MW not working optimally since its establishment in 2001, despite the huge investment in it.

“These are very hard questions, and we will dare to tread on grounds that angels fear to tread on during this summit. The hard questions must be asked; answers must be proffered; and actions must be taken to get our power sector working excellently to benefit our people and our State,” he declared.

He enjoined stakeholders at the summit to make it a worthwhile engagement, and not a talk shop, adding, “This Summit should chart a roadmap, and be seen as a call to action with clear timelines on who should do what, when would such actions be completed, what are the clear expectations outlined.

The Governor informed that the State’s vision for total electricity access is anchored on a simple principle that electricity must not be seen as a luxury but as a fundamental enabler of modern life.

He sued for a collective aspiration by Governors to convene an energy and security summit that are deliberately planned and purposefully executed, saying that under the State’s Electricity Policy 2024 and Electricity Law 2025, legal regulatory and policy foundations have been established to regulate the State electricity market.

He called for quality collaboration between the Federal Government and States as envisaged in the electricity Act, promising that the State’s electricity reforms would be attained within the context of Nigeria’s reforming, reshaping, and re-designing electricity supply industry.

He assured investors of his commitment to provide the necessary facilities and level-playing field for them to invest and produce clean energy in the State.

The Governor stated that the State is already integrating clean energy solutions into its vision to ensure that model healthcare centres, schools, and other critical State’s facilities and services are no longer depending on unreliable power supply.

“Our Compressed Natural Gas mass transportation plan, introduction of electric vehicles, and other energy renewable initiatives are all part of the deliberate strategy to reduce emission, cut cost, and build a sustainable energy future.

“In Akwa Ibom State, electricity sector governance will be professional, transparent, and entirely citizen-focused. Only by so doing, can we put in place a State electricity sector that will stand the test of time.”

“Let us make our State an outstanding model for sub national electricity reform in Nigeria, because when we electrify Akwa Ibom State and enable reliable, affordable, and clean electricity across the State, we are creating an Akwa Ibom in which we all rise and stand tall together to truly arise to a renewed hope,” he said.

Chairman of the State’s Electricity Reform Committee, Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, noted that the stakeholders are not merely gathered to discuss ideas but to align politics, policy, and investment with the technical and financial reforms that can deliver real change.

According to her, with the theme of the summit “Attaining Energy Security and Universal Access for Akwa Ibom State within the Framework of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,” the State is strongly determined to come out with the workable key to provide sustainable, clean, accessible and affordable electricity for the people to live comfortably.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu who was represented by his Chief Technical Adviser, Mr Adedayo Olowoniyi felicitated the State on the determination to reform the electricity sector for affordable and universal access to power, and assured of the support of the Federal Government.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Power, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, commended Governor Umo Eno and his team for the forthrightness, courage and visionary insight which he described as indication that the State has positioned itself as a model for other sub – nationals.

Also speaking, Governors of Enugu, Abia, Cross River and Bayelsa States who were represented by their commissioners in the power sector, as well as the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Air Vice Marshall E. E. Effiong, congratulated the Governor for his development strides and the commitment to transforming the power sector and assured of collaboration and support where necessary to ensure success of the vision.

Speaking on behalf of Akwa Ibom Stakeholders, Senator Ekong Sampson said it was a delight to see how the Governor was driving transformation in the State, and assured that members of the National Assembly completely align with the vision of the Governor to reposition the sector.

In a keynote address, Team Leader – Power, United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility, Eyo O. Ekpo, enumerated five strategic priorities that must be addressed by any credible State electricity reforms including; Operationalise AKSERC, bringing together the elements of the State electricity value chain in a mutually-supporting commercial framework that is focused on serving the State first and foremost, and Focus on the off-grid market too, among others.

High point of the event was the unveiling of the State Electricity Policy, and the State Electricity Law by the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, distinguished guests and senior government officials.

  • How Eno is redefining learning in Akwa Ibom

How Eno is redefining learning in Akwa Ibom

    By Racheal Udom

When Pastor Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, walked into the warm embrace of his old classmates at Victory High School Old Students’ Association (1981 set) during their special quarterly meeting in Ikeja, Lagos, the moment was more than just a reunion. It was a poignant reminder of how far life had brought him, from the humble corridors of a secondary school to the commanding heights of public office. For him, it was also a chance to reflect on the life-changing power of education and to reaffirm his commitment to lifting the next generation through qualitative learning.

At the event, Governor Eno was bestowed with the title of Grand Patron of the association, an honour he described as humbling and inspiring. “Our alma mater played a crucial role in shaping us into who we are today,” he told his classmates. “Those of us whom God has lifted must, in turn, support the growth of our schools and educational institutions.”

This conviction is not merely rhetorical. Since assuming office, Governor Eno has woven education into the very fabric of his administration’s vision. He sees it not only as the most sustainable tool for empowerment but also as the bedrock upon which Akwa Ibom’s future must be built. His presence at the reunion, therefore, was not only personal but symbolic of his broader agenda, one that places education at the heart of governance.

In Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno has already embarked on ambitious reforms designed to reimagine the learning environment for children and young people. At the meeting, he spoke passionately about these initiatives:

His administration has commenced the construction of modern, fully-equipped model primary schools across the state. These are not just classrooms but comprehensive learning centres with digital facilities, science laboratories, libraries, and recreational amenities to nurture well-rounded pupils.

Recognising the importance of equity, the governor is ensuring that each senatorial district hosts at least one model secondary school. These schools are designed to meet global standards, serving as hubs for academic excellence and technical skills development.

“Our children deserve access to sound, qualitative education no matter where they are born,” he affirmed. “By building these institutions, we are laying the foundation for a knowledge-driven economy in Akwa Ibom.”

Governor Eno’s initiatives are already leaving an indelible mark. Among the most remarkable achievements so far are: Building on the foundation laid by previous administrations, his government has reinforced the policy of free and compulsory education for children in primary and secondary schools. Importantly, he has ensured that hidden costs such as exam fees, textbooks, and uniforms are addressed through targeted interventions.

Beyond the model schools, renovation and upgrading of existing schools have been prioritised. Dilapidated classrooms are being replaced with modern blocks, equipped with desks, electricity, and ICT facilities. Rural communities, once plagued by overcrowded or collapsing structures, are now witnessing a new era of conducive learning environments.

Recognising that no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers, the governor has invested heavily in training, welfare, and incentives for educators. Capacity-building workshops, digital literacy training, and new teacher recruitment drives are revitalising the workforce and improving learning outcomes.

Governor Eno has also paid special attention to vocational training. Several technical schools across Akwa Ibom are being repositioned with state-of-the-art facilities for carpentry, welding, ICT, fashion design, and other trades. This focus ensures that students not inclined to white-collar careers have employable skills for self-reliance.

His government has equally revived bursary schemes for undergraduates from Akwa Ibom and expanded scholarships for brilliant but indigent students. By easing the financial burden, more young people can pursue tertiary education without fear of dropping out.

In line with global trends, the administration is integrating ICT into classrooms. Pilot schemes have seen the distribution of learning tablets, introduction of e-libraries, and partnerships with technology providers to boost digital literacy among students.

While policy achievements are notable, what stands out about Governor Eno’s approach is the personal dimension he brings to leadership. During the reunion, he openly thanked his old classmates for the solidarity they showed him — both during his election and, more touchingly, during the passing of his wife.

“Education remains the greatest gift we can give the next generation,” he reminded them, drawing parallels between the support they had given him and the collective responsibility society owes to children. For him, giving back to schools like Victory High and expanding opportunities in Akwa Ibom are deeply intertwined missions.

Governor Eno’s vision for education transcends the classroom. He sees it as an economic enabler. By producing skilled, knowledgeable, and disciplined graduates, Akwa Ibom can strengthen its workforce, attract investment, and drive industrialisation.

Model schools, vocational hubs, and ICT-driven learning are not just policies; they are components of a long-term development strategy. In his own words: “By investing in the education of today’s children, we are investing in tomorrow’s workforce, entrepreneurs, and leaders. This is the surest way to guarantee sustainable development for our state.”

Governor Eno’s story is also a powerful testament to the enduring influence of secondary education. Victory High School shaped him not only academically but also in values, resilience, and social responsibility. Becoming the Grand Patron of the alumni association was, in a sense, a full-circle moment, a reminder that no leader ever outgrows the institutions that nurtured them.

It also reflects his philosophy that those who rise must look back. His call to fellow alumni to support schools is consistent with his governance style, where partnerships between government, communities, and the private sector are seen as essential to sustainable development.

As Akwa Ibom continues to witness reforms in education under his watch, there is a growing sense of optimism. Parents speak of improved learning environments, teachers testify to better support, and students are gradually accessing the kind of facilities once reserved for elite schools.

For Governor Eno, the journey is far from over. He has repeatedly pledged that education will remain a top priority throughout his tenure. His recent reunion with classmates was therefore not just nostalgia, but a reaffirmation that the legacy he wishes to leave behind is one of enlightenment, empowerment, and transformation through education.

From the classrooms of Victory High School to the Government House in Uyo, the trajectory of Umo Eno’s life has been shaped by education. Today, as he drives reforms in Akwa Ibom, he is ensuring that the same opportunities he had , and more,  are extended to every child, regardless of background.

His reunion with classmates may have been a simple gathering, but it underscored a profound truth: education is the common thread that binds generations, shapes destinies, and builds nations. In Governor Eno’s Akwa Ibom, that thread is being woven into a stronger, brighter, and more inclusive future.

Gov Eno doles out N1.5bn interest-free traders’ loan

Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, today, launched the free food voucher programme for the vulnerable and the neediest at the popular Itam market, located in Itu Local Government Area.

Flanked by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the two Senators representing Akwa Ibom North East and South respectively, Senator Aniekan Bassey and Senator Ekong Sampson respectively, the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and other top government officials, Governor Eno, was messianic as he spoke of his government’s bottom -up approach, where the poor and the vulnerable would be assisted to Arise and shine.

The free food voucher for the vulnerable, is a key element of the Bulk Agency Bill that was signed to law a week ago, and the Board, equally inaugurated by the Governor, last week.

The key responsibility of the Agency, is to provide free  staple food items : Garri, rice and beans to the most vulnerable through the Social Register.

At the launch of this programme today, the Governor was hailed as a leader with compassion, and the joy and happiness on the part of the recipients was palpable.

They prayed for the Governor and promised to stand by him, support him and continue to pray for the success of his administration.

“This is an incredible people – oriented program. This Governor is truly a Pastor. Look at the Christ-like humility he has shown here.

“He is standing right there, supervising the distribution of the food items; he greeted and touched the recipients.

Governor Uno Eno’s humanitarian acts are what has defined him. In his inaugural address on May29. 2023, he had clearly signaled the direction of his government: The need to bring governance closer to the people and have them be invested and take ownership in governance. “To those who may not be able to put food on your table, I will be your advocate and champion.”

Today, at Itam market, he took bold steps to do exactly, stating that, “ When leaders are faced with daunting social problems, they usually think outside the box and that’s what motivated me to set up the Bulk Purchase Agency and the free food voucher drive initiative.

“We had reviewed all of the options, and this for us, remains the best. We are partnering with the market leaders and I want to thank them for the cooperation we have so far received from them.

“Let me repeat here that this is purely an interventionist  act; the solution to our food security remains the need for us to go back to the farm. Yesterday, I paid an unannounced visit to a farm run by one of your young men and I was so impressed with what the young man is doing and we pledge to support him. I will continue to pay visits to farms run by both people in government and others.

The highlight of the day’s event, was the announcement by the Governor of a 1.5 billion interest free -loans to Akwa Ibom traders to be managed by the Ibom Fadama Micro Finance Bank.

“ I have heard of how some of you go to some places to get loans with very high interest rates and that has, made the cost of food to go up, and before you finish paying the loans, you cannot meet up with your market or trading obligations anymore.

“I have come to tell you not to take such  loans anymore. Consequently, we are releasing five hundred million Naira interest -free loans to each of the three senatorial districts (1.5 billion Naira in total,) to help your business.

The Governor also promised to construct a car park, provide solar panel light, modern toilet facilities, all of which were the prayers of the leadership of the Itam Market.

The Governor directed the Transition Chairmen of the remaining 29 councils (  Itu and UyoLocal Government Councils, having been covered by today’s launch ) to ensure they launch the free voucher food program by next Tuesday.
