    LASTMA gets 10 patrol vehicles

    Lagos State Government has handed over 10 new Ranger pickup vehicles to the State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

    Permanent Secretary Office of the Governor’s Office, Mr Oluseyi Whenu said the gesture was in line with government’s effort to equipping the agency towards improved performance

    Whenu reiterated the government’s commitments to reducing traffic gridlock in the state.

    According to him, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode will not relent to reduce stress on Lagos roads. He also advised LASTMA management to reciprocate the good gesture by ensuring civility and proper conduct on the road.

    LASTMA Chairman Chris Olakpe, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) assured that the vehicles will be put to good use.

    Olakpe said the agency will continue to add value to traffic management in the state.

    LASTMA General Manager Olawale Musa announced the creation of a Special Task Force for the Apapa Port to be supported by men of the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in the state.

    Musa said government is committed to ensuring free flow of traffic along the axis and other parts of the state.

    The distribution of the vehicles, he said, is part of the present administration’s commitment to reposition LASTMA for efficient service delivery to the populace.

    Sallah Patrol: FRSC records 32 per cent decrease in death

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has  disclosed that the data gathered from the just concluded June 2017 Eid El Fitri Special Patrol showed a significant decrease in road crashes and in fatality rates, as compared to year 2016 Eid El Fitri.

    According to the Corps Public Education Officer,  Bisi Kazeem,  a 32 per cent reduction in fatality rate was recorded in the 2017 Sallah special patrol operations compared to 2017 and a 31 per cent reduction in road crashes was also attained.

    He added that there were reductions in serious cases of crash victims, 24 per cent, and minor cases, 43 per cent.

    Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi is appreciative of the significant improvement, which also saw a drop in number of traffic offences by 9.67 per cent and number of traffic offenders by 13.93 per cent.

    The Corps Marshal lauded the Corps’ Regular and Special Marshals deployed for the Special Patrol operations and called for continuos cooperation with sister agencies.

  • Military intensifies patrol across Lagos

    The military yesterday began intensified patrol of Computer Village, Ikeja and other strategic areas in Lagos.

    This may not be unconnected with militants threat to bomb some areas of the state before or during the Sallah break. It was learnt that armed soldiers were drafted from 9 Brigade to Computer Village following the statement of the Department of State Service (DSS) that some people have been arrested over the plot to bomb the place.

    Men of the Operation MESA and the anti-terrorism squad were seen patrolling other parts of the state.

    The Nation gathered that operatives of the Operation AWATSE have also been directed to intensify their surveillance of Ikorodu, Arepo as well as Shagamu to prevent hoodlums from wreaking havoc.

    Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni summoned an emergency meeting following intelligence report of an attempt to bomb Lagos. The outcome of the meeting which was allegedly attended by military chiefs in the state necessitated the increased security presence.

    When contacted, the Brigade’s spokesperson Major Oyegoke Gbadamosi said the soldiers were simply carrying out routine patrol.

    “It is not that they have taken over Computer Village or any area. We have just intensified patrol across the state and computer village is under our area of responsibility and so, we cannot allow anything happen there,” he said.

    Multinational task force to patrol Gulf of Guinea – Buhari

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said that a multinational task force will soon be established to patrol the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.

    He spoke during an audience with the French Minister of Defence, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

    The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said that patrols by the multinational task force will augment and boost ongoing efforts to improve security in the Gulf, and curb crude oil theft and piracy.

    Buhari and Le Drian also discussed ongoing French support for the Federal Government’s efforts to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

    The President expressed his government’s appreciation of the assistance and support of France and other G7 countries, which he said, has helped Nigeria achieve significant successes against Boko Haram.

    He said: “When we got into office in May, last year, Boko Haram was effectively controlling at least 14 local government areas. But now, it is no longer so, and they have resorted to attacking soft targets with Improvised Explosive Devices.

    “We are determined to secure all of our territory effectively. We are doing our best and our troops are now operating in the Sambisa Forest,” President Buhari told the French Defence Minister.

    The Minister assured President Buhari that France will continue to assist Nigeria to overcome Boko Haram, saying that all terrorists must be seen as common enemies of the free world.

    Community donates patrol van to police

    Bothered about the rate at which crimes and other social vices increase in their communities, residents of Agbara community have donated a patrol van to the Agbara Division of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Ogun State Command.

    The gesture was to help in strengthening its capability towards curbing crimes in the area.

    The Managing Director, Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC), Babajide Odusolu, who handed the vehicle over to the police said community policing is crucial to effective crime control.

    Odusolu, who was represented at the ceremony by the General Manager, Agbara OPIC Estate, Taiwo Aridegbe, said security is a collective responsibility, even as it also necessitates corporate support to the security agency.

    He added that the donation was part of OPIC’s corporate social responsibilities (CSR) towards combating security threat which has plagued development in the area in the last decade.

    He praised the police for their partnership with the state government to foster peaceful environment, adding that part of the agenda of Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration was to secure people’s lives and property.

    He said: “Government alone cannot face the business of policing in the state, either by way of personnel or equipment. So, if we cannot add to their personnel, we should help them with equipment. One of the cardinal programmes of Governor Amosun is to ensure safety of lives and property in Ogun State.

    “In recognition of our plan to enhance the reach of district police station, the board and management of OPIC decided to donate a patrol vehicle for use by the district police post in patrolling OPIC Estate, Agbara.”

    Responding, the Commissioner of Police, AbdulMajid Ali, who was represented by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Agbara Oyeniyi John, described OPIC’s effort as timely and commendable.

    Also, the Baale of Igere community in Agbara Estate, Apostle John Bamidele, said a robust security network would enhance development and attract industrialists to the state.

    24 patrol vans for FRSC at Xmas

    The Federal Ministry of Works in partnership with the World Bank has donated 24 patrol vehicles and four trucks to the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC to ensure an accident-free yuletide.

    The equipment are also targeted at ensuring safety and enforcement on specific road corridors where the bank is currently carrying out rehabilitation projects.

    While handing over the vehicles to the Corps Marshall of the commission, Osita Chidoka, the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen said expected target under the Road Sector Development Safety Corridor Project is to ensure fewer accidents and zero deaths.

    Among the expected equipment from the World Bank under the second phase of the Road Sector Development Programme are 21 patrol motorcycles, 3 heavy tow vehicles, 1 low tow vehicle, 6 double stretcher ambulances and 11 single stretcher ambulance among others.

    These road safety and communication equipment from the World Bank is to ensure that Nigeria meets its decade of action target on road safety over the next few years.

    The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka while receiving the equipments promised to mobilize his men to put them into good use to achieve the desired results.
