Technology has replaced hard work in music, says Paul Play

Veteran musician, Paul Play has said that the dominance of technology in the music industry has reduced artistes’ creativity and hard work.

The U.K.-based artiste said this during a recent podcast with Adesola where he compared the new generation of artistes with his generation.

Paul Play, who was one of the top acts in the 2000s, discussed that while it took artistes a lot of creativity and hard work in his days, technology has simplified the process now, especially with the introduction of artificial intelligence.

“Technology has really taken a lot of the hard work away from musicians,” he said. “You don’t really have to do much these days, like when I see DJs, it reminds me of seeing DJ Cassie with three turntables but now you can just press buttons. So music in terms of creativity has been simplified.

“If you have that interest you could just come up with anything. Now we are hearing there’s AI. Anybody will just say don’t worry I will bring out my song and sell millions of records by just using AI. My generation started doing music by learning the ropes and understanding the dos and don’ts of the music game, production, and songwriting.”

Music producer, singer and composer Paul Play Dairo has said there’s no love between players in the music industry.

Paul Play lamented that an artist  capitalised on the state of his health to lie to a firm that he had relapsed even after getting a clean bill of health and returning home.

He said: “I have had my share  of  the entertainment industry’s hate and evil dealings.

“In 2009, I had a serious ailment that almost cost me my life, thanks to God Almighty and His blessings and the people around me then.

“When I returned to Lagos from South Africa where I had a successful surgery, my agency pitched me for a reality show judge gig. I was home, hoping the gig would come through.

“My phone rang and the voice at the other end said: “Hi, Paul Play,  I’m the brand manager of Nigerian Breweries, are you in town?’ ‘Yes, I am in town,’ I replied.

“Then he dropped the call. I was wondering what was going on. Why would I get a call from the client, asking if I was in town or not. That’s quite strange. Moments later, my agency called me and told me that the manager of another artiste was insisting that my sickness had relapsed and I had gone back to South Africa for another surgery.

“My manager said they called him as well to ask for my whereabouts. So, this artiste tried to swing my gig for his artistes by concocting a believable lie. I was shocked because we are very close. From that moment, I concluded that there is no love in the industry. Every man for himself, God for us all.”

This came after an accusation that a top comedian and others were working against his success.
