PDP BoT takes reconciliation to Kaduna

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT) yesterday visited Kaduna State to unite members ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Speaking at a meeting with stakeholders of the party at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, the BoT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, said: “We have visited many states for the zonal rallies, singing one song of unity, understanding and performance. We are happy that this is the first time the party is having a sole candidate for the presidential race. This is because of the understanding of you and your colleagues in other states.

“We have come to Kaduna to make peace among ourselves and accommodate even those that are sitting on the fence, so that at the end of the day, our load will be very light. Even when you are chewing your tongue, the teeth and tongue remain together.

“I am pleased with what I saw on arrival this morning and from the conduct of the meeting. I am satisfied that all is well in Kaduna State as I return to Abuja.

“During the Centenary celebration, a President from an African country said when Nigeria sneezes, the rest of Africa catches cold; when Kaduna sneezes, Nigeria catches cold; that is the importance of your state to Nigeria and beyond. We can only maintain that status if Kaduna is united. There should be a spirit of give- and-take and forgiveness.”

Speaking after the meeting, Governor Ramalan Yero said: “This visit is important to unite and end complaints within the party. It will surely help the success of the party.

“We are known for respect for party leadership as has been shown by all leaders and this is an indication that we shall remain united in facing the next general elections.”

Senator Ahmed Makarfi said: “We are one family and will continue to be one family. We can solve our problems as a family and work together to return the PDP to power at all levels.

“We have to be our brother’s keeper. Unity is important and we shall remain united. We discussed important internal party issues and we are not fighting each other. The meeting is for us to forge greater unity and ensure the victory of our party in 2015.”

The meeting was attended by top Kaduna PDP members, including Senator Esther Usman; House of Assembly Speaker Shehu Tahir; Senator Caleb Zagi; Alhaji Lawal Yakawada; Mr. Bala Sani; Mr. Abokie Galadima; Mr. Yakubu Barde; National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Director-General Sani Sidi; former General Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Andrew Yakubu; Mrs. Charity Shekari; former PDP State Chairman Yau Jama’a and other stakeholders at the state and local government levels.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday met with chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and members of the cabinet in the Council Chamber.

Those at the meeting included Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President, David Mark, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih, while the PDP National Chairman, Adamu Muazu, led members of the National Working Committee to the meeting.

Most ministers and top government officials that attended the Federal Executive Council meeting stayed behind for the meeting that started around 2pm.

Speaking to State House correspondents, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisah Metuh, said: “There was a meeting between FEC members, the NWC members and the leadership of the National Assembly PDP caucus.”

“The meeting discussed a lot of issues, the most important issues being the interface between the executive, the legislature and the party with a view to promoting and publicizing the ideals of the achievements of the government’s transformation agenda and to ensure that we continue to gain the confidence of Nigerians.”

“Being the only party that promotes the unity and progress of Nigeria that covers all national interest, we want to ensure that our people will continue to have faith in the party. The meeting set up a small committee to continue to dialogue and promote theses ideals.”

On whether the Adamawa governorship by-election was discussed, he said: “The issue of Adamawa was an exclusive preserve of the NWC and the body is unknown to the party’s constitution to discuss such matters.”

He said that it is exclusively the preserve of the NWC to discuss the Adamawa election.

Asked if ministers with political ambitions have been asked to go, he said: “We have not brought out our guidelines. You cannot tell people to resign except when the guidelines are out. So when the guidelines come out then we can now discuss such issues.”

According to him, the guidelines would soon be released.

“You know we have a regulatory body that takes care of such issues, we have INEC and we are waiting, we will not want to run foul of the law, very soon, we will bring out our guidelines,” Metuh stated.

Govs must use security votes to get information – Anenih

The Chairman, Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Anthony Anenih, has called on governors to use their security votes to gather information that will help curb the country’s security challenges.

Addressing a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum in Abuja, Anenih said that using the fund was necessary, as the Federal Government alone could not guarantee security in the country.

“All of you are chief security officers of your states, the Federal Government alone cannot give all Nigerians security and everybody must be involved.

“The market women, governors, members of the National Assembly and councillors must all be involved.

“Most of those who destroy houses and kill people live with us and police cannot perform miracle without information.

“Getting information now is very expensive so I appeal to the governors that this is the time to use your security votes to seek information. Nobody will blame you for that,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Chief Anenih as saying at the meeting.

The BoT chairman also stressed the need for members of the party to reconcile their differences.

He said, “If anybody says that PDP is not on ground, he must be telling lies. The problem PDP has is the inability to reconcile.

“I want to appeal to all of you here present and through you to others that are not here that Nigerians want a change.

“They want reconciliation; they want to see that it is well with us. We must be ready to reconcile ourselves and avoid those things that tend to divide us.”

Chief Anenih said that all that was needed to move the party and the country forward was unity, sincerity, commitment and loyalty of all members.

    Anenih re-elected PDP BoT Chairman

Former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih, has emerged as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was elected at a meeting of the board at the Presidential Villa which ended at about 12.45am on Tuesday.

Anenih was former Chairman of the party’s BoT until 2007.

Anenih told State House correspondents after the meeting  that he was happy to be the chairman of the BoT, a position, which according to him is “the conscience of the party and comprises elders, men of integrity, honour and experience as members.”

“PDP is on the move again and cannot be stopped by any merger of political parties.”

He described the merger of opposition parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “pack of weak blocks that cannot be used to construct an enduring edifice.”

In a congratulatory message by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP expressed confidence that Anenih’s antecedents as a mobiliser and consensus builder over the years will contribute to the   stability of the party.

“Chief Anenih’s tireless participation and critical role in the formation of the PDP places him in good stead to provide wise counsel and direct the influential Board of Trustees to follow the noble ideals of the founders of the party. His wealth of experience and acclaimed reputation as a democrat and consensus builder are assets that the party needs at this critical point in our democratic evolution,” the PDP said.
