  • One killed in Oyo APC, PDP campaign

One supporter of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Salaudeen Surajudeen, has died during a clash at the weekend with members of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    Several others were severely injured.

Surajudeen was said to have been found lying in a pool of his blood following an attack at Igboora in Ibarapa Local Government Area on Saturday evening.

Others who sustained severe cuts were said to be receiving treatment at undisclosed medical facilities in the area.

The incident is coming on the heels of a call by the PDP governorship candidate, Seyi Makinde, that Police Commissioner Abiodun Odude should summon an emergency security meeting.

Makinde said this would reduce incessant attacks by suspected members of the state’s chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The PDP candidate, last Thursday, was attacked in Ojoo area of the city, leaving one person injured and a vehicle damaged while returning from a campaign tour of council areas in Oyo town.

Also, the APC campaign rally was attacked around 5.30 p.m in Ibarapa on Saturday.

Gunmen reportedly opened fire at the rally, leaving a motorcycle (Okada) mechanic in the area and supporter of the party lying in a pool of his blood.

Both parties have been trading blames on the new wave of bloody attacks in the state.

While the ruling party accused the PDP of sponsoring the attacks, the opposition pointed fingers at the APC.

In a statement by its spokesman Dr. AbdulAzeez Olatunde, the APC accused the PDP of attempting to kill its (APC’s) governorship candidate, Mr. Bayo Adelabu, who he claimed only escaped from the attack by the whiskers.

Olatunde said: “The untoward event occurred barely after the APC governorship hopeful, Oloye Bayo Adelabu, finished addressing a capacity crowd of supporters who were apparently in upbeat mood to receive the candidate and his campaign train in the sleepy town.

“Shortly after the address by the duo of Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Adelabu, some stern-looking PDP hatchet men were poised to attack Adelabu by wielding weapons as they advanced towards his direction to attack him.”

He said security men hurriedly ferried Adelabu to the nearest vehicle for protection.

Makinde, through his Director of Media and Publicity, Prince Dotun Oyelade, urged the police commissioner and the Director of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) to summon an emergency meeting of leaders of all political parties on the current tense security situation in the state.

  • I will bring prosperity back to Nigeria -Atiku

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential campaign hits Kaduna on Thursday, its Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar promised to bring back wealth and prosperity to Nigeria if voted into power in Feb. 16 presidential poll.

This was as the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus said that President Muhammadu Buhari has tried, but he has lost the strength to lead a country of 200 million people.

Atiku who addressed a presidential rally in Hausa, in Kaduna, said there was no hunger and poverty among Nigerians when the PDP was in power.

He alleged that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) had failed to fulfil it’s 2015 campaign promises, urging electorate to vote the PDP back to power come February 16 to return the nation back to the path of progress.

The former Vice President said the APC and President Muhammad Buhari had promised to tackle security but failed, as the challenges continued in most part of the country.

He, however, said the APC and President Buhari must go urging the people to vote the PDP from bottom to top.

“The PDP is responsible for all the development in this country, but they came and deceived people, and lied to them and, asked them to vote for change, but where is the change.

“The APC promised to tackle insecurity but the challenges are still here, ravaging the North East, North West and the North Central, have they fulfilled the promises, So why are we going to vote for them?

“You know that when PDP was in power, there was prosperity, wealth and development.

“So let me tell if you vote the PDP we shall bring back prosperity, progress, employment and trades to the people. This is a promise we are making to you.

“I am begging you to vote the PDP from top to bottom and bottom to top. So join me in chanting Buhari must go.APC must go. May God bless you.”

Earlier, the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus had said that President Buhari has tried, but no longer have the strength to continue to rule over 200 million people.

“It is time to ask President Buhari to go, he has tried, but let him go home and rest. His energy is no more there. We need somebody with a lot of energy that can work for 24 hours.

“If you vote for APC, the Cabal will be in control of government because Buhari is weak, he cannot rule.

“We want somebody who has the capacity to rule this country, and that person is Atiku. Atiku will provide jobs, food, security, etc for Nigerians.

“Nigeria is 200 million people, so Atiku will not sleep until there is food on your table and security of lives and property all over the country. Atiku will not fail you.

“Don’t listen to APC deceit, Isah Ashiru is your next governor in Kaduna, and vote for all PDP candidates in Kaduna”.

The PDP national chairman said the era of election rigging is over, saying that nobody can rig election any longer.

He warned INEC to resist the temptation of rigging the election.

On his part, the Director-General of the PDP and President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki had earlier said “they promised us security, but there is no security anywhere in Nigeria.

“There is no security in the North East, no security in the North West, no security in the North Central, no security anywhere in Nigeria

“They promised us economic development but Nigeria is now the capital of poverty.

“Come February Nigerians should vote for the PDP in all the elections. We want a better Nigeria, not the propaganda of the APC.”

Former interim national chairman of PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi said the crowd has confirmed that Kaduna is a PDP state. “We in PDP we don’t abuse whatever. The road, water supply, big educational institutions, secondary school, health facilities you see in Kaduna state was built by PDP.

  • Atiku’ll eliminate multiple taxation, others, says PDP campaign

THE People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO) has said that its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has perfected a blueprint that will eliminate multiple taxation, slash income taxes, as well as commodity tax rates and increase government funding to small and medium enterprises in key sectors of the economy.

According to the opposition party, this will mark a clear difference between Atiku Abubakar and President Muhamamdu Buhari, who, the PDP said, is planning to increase the suffering of Nigerians by imposing more taxes on them in the coming year.

In a statement yesterday by the campaign spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said Atiku is personally worried over the current huge tax burden and hidden levies on businesses, common commodities and services imposed by the present administration.

It added that such policies by the Buhari administration has led to the prevalent economic strangulation, high costs and untold hardship being faced by Nigerians.

The statement said: “A detailed check on the tax regime under President Buhari’s administration shows that apart from huge capital gain taxes, which is crippling businesses and scaring away investors to other countries, Nigerians are also bearing the huge burden of hidden taxes on everyday consumer goods and services.”

The PDP Campaign, however, urged Nigerians not to despair as its candidate has articulated a framework that would streamline tax administration and ensure transparency in remittance and spending as well as support private businesses to thrive.

“Part of the framework in Atiku Abubakar’s policy document shows a plan “towards achieving the lowest corporate income tax rate in Africa, in order to make Nigeria one of the most attractive destinations for foreign direct investment.

“This is in addition to a plan to achieve lower transaction costs (including lowering the capital gain tax) to attract investment and boost activities in the capital market, as well as ensuring that the granting of qualification for tax incentives is in accordance with pre-determined, uniform and clear criteria,” the statement added.

PDP has also alleged plans by the Federal Government to arrest members of the National Assembly that booed President Muhammadu Buhari during the presentation of the 2019 budget proposal.

Members of federal legislature had on Wednesday, split into two groups, with one group mainly made of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) hailing President Buhari. Another group of PDP legislators booed and heckled the President.

Addressing reporters in Abuja yesterday, a spokesman for the PPCO, Alhaji Buba Galadima, accused the Presidency of having directed security agencies to start compiling names of lawmakers, who booed the President for the purpose of arresting them.

Galadima said there were several instances across the globe where parliamentarians booed and even pelted presidents and prime ministers at similar functions.

He warned that the Presidency would be breaching the rules of democracy by arresting the legislators.

According to him, the lawmakers enjoy parliamentary privileges covering their actions and so cannot be arrested or prosecuted for actions that took place on the floor of their hallowed chambers.

  • PDP campaign: Contractor sues party, Gana, Ali, others for unpaid N360m

PDP campaign: Contractor sues party, Gana, Ali, others for unpaid N360m

The last has not been heard of the presidential campaign of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

A firm engaged in the project has sued the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some party chieftains for alleged N360 million debt.

Sued with PDP are Senator Ahmadu Ali (director general of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Organisation), ex-Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana (director, Contact and Mobilisation) and ex-Finance Minister Senator Nenadi Usman (who served as director of Finance).

The suit, before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, was filed by an Abuja-based firm, Twinkle Nigeria Limited, through its lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).

The firm claimed to have been engaged by the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation to “beautify and decorate” the venue used by ex-President Jonathan in the 36 states during the campaign leading to the presidential election. It accused the defendants of refusing to pay N360 million.

This is the second time the Jonathan campaign group would be sued for unpaid debt. A company, Silon Concepts Limited sued the PDP and Ahmadu Ali at the High Court of the FCT last year for their alleged refusal to pay an outstanding N70 for services rendered.

A director of Twinkle Nigeria Limited, Agarawu Tunde, said in a supporting affidavit that his company, on January 7, 2015, submitted a proposal for the branding and beautification  of the PDP presidential campaign venues in the 36 states to the party’s presidential campaign organisation for N15 million per state.

“The third defendant (Prof Gana) approved the plaintiff’s proposal for N10 million per state and directed the Assistant Director, Venue, to include same in the budget.  The plaintiff states that it was not paid for the services rendered to the defendants.

“On January 30, 2015, it (Twinkle) wrote a demand letter, requesting payment of N360 million being cost of the branding and beautification services rendered at the defendants’ campaign venues nationwide.

“The third defendant (Prof Gana) endorsed the letter, confirming that the plaintiff provided the services and directed the fourth defendant (Nenadi Usman) to pay the plaintiff. The plaintiff’s officials subsequently visited the defendants several times, pleading that they be paid, but the defendants refused.”

The plaintiff is, therefore, seeking an order of the court, compelling the defendants to pay the N360 million and 10 per cent interest on the money until the judgment is executed.

In their separate affidavits, Prof Gana and Usman denied the plaintiff’s claim and denied ever entering any contract with Twinkle Nigeria Limited. They also denied that the firm provided the services it claimed to have rendered.

Hearing in the case has been scheduled for February 11.
