PDP knocks Dokpesi, Secondus out of chairmanship race

    Zones position to Southwest

The desire of media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, to lead the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to have been truncated by leaders of the party from the three geo-political zones in the south –Southwest, Southeast and Southsouth.

PDP governors, National Assembly members, former ministers and other leaders from the south at a crucial meeting held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, ahead of the August 17 national convention billed for the city opted to zone the post to the Southwest.

Also out of the race is Uche Secondus, former acting national chairman of the PDP, who is from Rivers State.

Dokpesi is from Edo State.  Both Edo and Rivers are part of the Southsouth geopolitical zone.

Although Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who briefed journalists at the end of the meeting, said any party member willing to contest any position was free to do so, he was quick to advise party members to respect the zoning formula.

Also zoned to the Southwest are the positions of national treasurer and deputy national publicity secretary.

The party zoned the positions of first deputy national chairman, National Legal Adviser, Deputy National Women Leader and Deputy National Auditor to the Southsouth, while South-East got National Organising Secretary, National Youth Leader and Deputy National Financial Secretary.

PDP stalwarts from the Southwest who have signified their intention to contest the PDP national chairmanship include former Chairman of the Nigerian Port Authority, Chief Bode George, and a former minister, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja.

Sheriff writes INEC on proposed PDP convention

The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking to stop the party’s national convention, slated for August 17 in Port Harcourt.

Sheriff has asked the commission to completely ignore a letter sent to it by the chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, notifying the INEC of the proposed convention.

Sheriff, in the letter dated August 2, 2016, said the caretaker committee was illegal and has no powers under the PDP constitution to convene the convention.

Citing Article 31(2) (a) of the PDP Constitution, the former Borno State Governor told the INEC that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party could call for and ratify activities culminating in a convention.

The letter further stated that the NEC is headed by Sheriff.

He said INEC and the general public should note that the PDP is not planning to hold any convention, stressing that he had not been authorised by the NEC to do so.

He warned that any person or group of persons planning for the said convention is doing so as an illegal body and in direct contempt of valid court orders.

No court order has stopped PDP convention, says Wike

RIVERS State Governor Nyesom Wike has said there is no court order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) August 17 National Convention in Port Harcourt.

He said the convention would hold as scheduled, although the court was yet to hear the suit by the “sacked” Acting National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, challenging conduct of the national convention.

While addressing PDP’s Southsouth Executive Committee at the Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, Wike said: “The court could not have sacked Senator Ahmed Makarfi, because it cannot sit on appeal on the judgment of a court of coordinate jurisdiction.”

The governor also added that there was an application to allow Markafi to be joined  in the suit, stressing that hearing was adjoined till August 15.

He insisted that the suit challenging the conduct of the national convention was yet to be entertained by the court.

Wike said the Edo State chapter of the PDP would be supported to win next month’s governorship election.

He said: “PDP in the Southsouth cannot be complete, until we take over Edo State. Therefore, I urge INEC to conduct a free and fair election in Edo State and every other state where we have elections.

“I thank the party in Edo State for doing quite well in the campaigns. As an opposition party, PDP members have promoted the party’s chances through committed campaigns.”

The Rivers governor also said the leaders of the PDP in the South would meet on Thursday to determine positions, ahead of the national convention.

Wike promised that the PDP would emerge stronger from the challenges, claiming that Nigerians were waiting for the party to provide leadership.

The National Vice Chairman of the PDP in the Southsouth, Emma Ogidi, earlier hailed Wike for using the people’s mandate to transform the state.

Ogidi stressed that Wike was a complete party man, who helped in rebuilding PDP through his engagements with party stakeholders.

The Southsouth executive committee also conferred an award of excellence on the governor.

PDP vows to go ahead with convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared on Friday it will go ahead with next month’s national convention in Port Harcourt, despite Thursday’s ruling of a Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the party from organizing the meeting.

“We are yet to see any judgement suspending the national convention. Whichever way it is, if we decide ‎to appeal and we are given accelerated hearing, nothing will stop the convention,” the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr.Walid Jibrin, said in Kaduna.

Jibrin told reporters that efforts to destroy the party by “internal and external forces” will fail.

He said the PDP was already taking necessary steps to resolve the stalemate and restore the party’s lost glory through genuine reconciliation and mediation.

He said: “It is bound to happen, challenges from both internal and external forces are bound to happen.

“We are engaging in genuine reconciliation and mediation that will make us come out stronger to win Edo and Ondo governorship polls, the rerun election in Rivers and capture power in 2019.

“We will get the judgment copy and study it and thereafter take necessary actions.

“But whoever is out to destroy our efforts, particularly the Edo primaries, God will not forgive such person‎ because we have all the INEC documents authenticating the Edo primaries.”

He asked party members who are in court against the party to withdraw such immediately.

He also appealed to supporters of the party who may be frustrated by the unfolding events to remain calm and shun personal attacks on individuals.

He said: “We have observed the interest purported to be shown by some people who are committed to killing PDP. We will X-ray the situation because we are opposition party dealing with issues that will help Nigeria rather than abusing individuals.

“The BoT is up to the task to resolve the problems after due consultation. God will not allow anybody to be used to destroy the party.”

Count me out of attempt to stop PDP convention – Metuh

The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has dissociated himself from a suit seeking to stop the party’s national convention billed to hold in Port Harcourt on August 17.

Metuh’s name had featured as one of the plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed by the camp of the party’s ousted National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff and others at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Mr. Richard Ihediwa on Thursday, Metuh said he was not a party to the suit neither did he instruct anyone to fill same on his behalf.

The statement said, “Chief Metuh wishes to inform the general public that he is not part of the suit seeking to stop the convention and he never instructed anyone to file any such suit on his behalf.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Chief Metuh has taken the pains to consult those that went to court and has been reliably informed that his name was listed in error and which they have promised to rectify accordingly.

“It is pertinent to mention that Chief Metuh has not attended any political meeting and/or programme since his chair accident at a function at the party’s National Secretariat in April wherein he aggravated his spinal cord ailment.

“Our appeal therefore is that Chief Metuh at this time should be left out of intra-party controversies. His only preoccupation now remains matters concerning his health and the extant court trial.”

Metuh, who is currently on bail, is facing trial over N400 million slush arms purchase cash which he allegedly collected from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

The Sheriff faction of the party filed the interlocutory application on July 20 shortly after the Ahmed Makarfi faction announced August 17 for the party’s national convention.

They specifically want the court to stop the party from going ahead with the planned national convention pending the determination of their substantive suit.

Justice Abang had, while granting the applicants’ motion ex-parte for leave to have the application heard during vacation, said he ordinarily would not have granted it, but for the urgency involved.

“It is deserving to be heard during the vacation by the judge nominated by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. But whether it will succeed is another issue entirely,” the judge said

He scheduled hearing of the application for today and directed that the issuance of  hearing notices on both respondents – the PDP and  INEC.

    •Youths campaign for George

Southwest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday renewed its bid for the national chairmanship, saying it is consistent with the party’s principled position on zoning, equity, justice and fair play.

Acknowledging that the slot was zoned to the South, which encompasses the Southwest, Southeast and Southsouth, the party chieftains urged the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee to streamline the zoning arrangement to enable the Southsouth enjoy the slot.

However, the region is divided by the ambition of the former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, and former Lagos State governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, who is allegedly sponsored by the PDP governors.

A source said some chieftains loyal to Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko are pushing for postponement of the convention till next year to enable him participate in the contest, following expiration of his tenure of office.

In their view, Mimiko has a track record of political participation and leadership, adding that he is conversant with the party tradition, vision, structures and goals.

At a news conference in Lagos, a pro-George group, the Southwest Democratic Youth Vanguard, urged the national leadership to zone the chairmanship to the Southwest.

The group stressed that it is the only zone that has not enjoyed the slot, despite its strategic roles in the history and success of the party since 1999.

Its coordinator, Kola Salau, said the other zones in the South should concede the position to the Southwest because the highest ranking political office holder, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, is from the Southeast and the last Acting Chairman, Uche Secondus, is from the Southsouth.

Urging the Caretaker Committee to uphold the principles of fairness, fair-play and collective interest, he said the party could only achieve this, if the recommendation of the Ekweremadu Committee on zoning to the Southwest is implemented.

Salau added: “You cannot merely zone the chairmanship to the South. This leaves room for distortions and utter confusion about the traditional zoning arrangement, which stipulates that whatever is zoned to the North must come to the South and vice versa in any zoning arrangement.”

The coordinator also said if the position was zoned to the Southwest, Lagos should have it because other state chapters have produced party executives at the zonal and national levels.

Urging the party to consider George, he said: “Experience, integrity, maturity, boldness and knowledge of the party constitution are key attributes in the selection of the topmost position. We believe Chief Olabode George adequately possesses these qualities.

“He has the credibility, the temperament, the gravitas, discipline, national network and a vast pool of connections across the ethnic divide.”

At the news conference were local party leaders from Lagos, including Segun Sowole, Elder John Agbaje, Evangelist Israel Ogunrinde, Mrs. Dewumi Williams and Chief Victor Olajide.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed August 17 for a fresh national convention to elect new executives to run the party’s affairs.

The convention is slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The party has also zoned the chairmanship position to the Southern part of the country, while the 2019 presidential ticket will still go to the North.

However, it was not stated which zone in the South will produce the chairman out of the three contending zones of Southeast, Southwest and South-south.

Rising from an enlarged meeting of critical organs and stakeholders in Abuja on Thursday, the party announced the setting aside of the previous zoning arrangements for its national executive positions.

Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, the Chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said a new zoning arrangement would be announced in 48 hours.

Conspicuous at the meeting was Senator Buruji Kashamu, a prominent chieftain in the rival Ali Modu Sheriff camp.

Makarfi specially announced Kashamu’s presence, stating gleefully that the presence of the Ogun State born politician was an indication that the two camps have closed ranks.

Sheriff did not attend the meeting and there was no explanation for his absence.

Kashamu declined comments on the state of affairs in the Sheriff camp, as he tactically avoided questions from journalists.

“The presence of Senator Kashamu at this meeting is enough evidence that we are making progress and that we have not foreclosed the option of reconciliation,” Makarfi said.

Makarfi, who chaired the meeting, further stated that the party had proposed amendments to its constitution to reflect recent court pronouncements regarding certain sections.

The former Kaduna State governor also announced the setting up of a special committee to reconcile the various contending groups in the Southwest zone.

The committee, which is headed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu is expected to commence its assignment in the days ahead.
