PDP crisis: Court validates Port Harcourt convention

Sheriff’s lawyer files notice of appeal

The counsel to Senator Ali-Modu Sheriif, Prince Ajibola Oluyede, last night said he has filed a notice of appeal to the judgment of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, which validated the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Oluyede, in a statement, said the judgment, which okayed the process which led to the emergence of the Ahmed Makarfi committee, has worsened efforts to resolve the PDP crisis.
The statement reads: “The judgement of the Federal High Court PH Division further exacerbates the conflicting position between that Division on the one hand and the Lagos and Abuja Divisions on the other. The Lagos Division by the hand of two different judges, Buba J. and Idris J. made preservative orders respectively on the 14th and 20th of May in respect of matters that challenged the notice of convention issued for election of replacement for incumbents of the NEC and NWC of the PDP whose tenure had not expired.“The PH Division made orders ex parte on the 23rd of May validating a meeting held in PH by some  PDP  members as a valid National Convention held pursuant to that Notice, challenged in Lagos and validating a ‘caretaker Committee’ installed at the meeting to replace the officers of the PDP NEC and NWC who were fighting for the continuation of their tenure at the Lagos Division.
“That ex parte order lapsed on the 9th of June.
“The Abuja Division on the 30th of June made interlocutory orders directing that only the Ali Modu Sheriff-led NEC/NWC could represent the PDP or conduct its affairs including primaries (This confirmed the previous orders of the Lagos Division. This is a specific order concerning PDP primaries for Edo and Ondo states.
“Today the PH Division has restored its lapsed orders in a judgment again validating the PH meeting as a ‘National Convention’ of the PDP, legitimising the ‘Caretaker Committee’ and the removal and replacement  of the NEC and NWC of the PDP in what my clients describe as a coup detat.
“Clearly, there is need for more to be done to determine which of the conflicting orders should be obeyed.
“My clients have therefore instructed that the PH judgment be appealed and INEC and PDP restrained from obeying it until the appeal is heard. The processes have been filed.”

Justice Liman Makhmud of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt yesterday validated the National Convention of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital on May 21. It was legally convened, the court said.

Justice Makmud said the National Caretaker Committee (CTC) members produced at the convention was legal as well as all the decisions taken at the convention.

He said the dissolution of the former Acting National chairman of the Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, members of his Executive, as well as members of the National Working Committee (NWC), of the party at the convention was legal.

The court held that the May 21 convention was properly constituted and chaired in accordance with the provision of the constitution. It granted all the relief sought in the originating summons by the National CTC Chairman, Senator Ahmed Markafi and Secretary, Senator Ben Obi.

Sheriff pledged to abide by the decision of the court. He spoke in the court through his lawyer, John Martins Abu.

Justice Makmud said: “The convention as earlier on examined and determined was directed and targeted at election, the evidence before the court, clearly showed that the items on the agenda which is related to the election of the national officers was removed in reference to those court orders.

“In the light of the above analysis… I consequently grant all the relief sought and I so grant.”

The Judge said: “It very obvious that under article 35 (3) (b), of the party’s constitution, the Deputy Chairman can effectively preside over the convention in the absence of the chairman. The circumstances where the chairman could be absent legitimately include, among others, temporary indisposition or incapacity or wilful absence.

“In view of the above analysis, I find as a fact that the convention was properly convened and the national Deputy Chairman had validly presided over the convention.” He stated.

On the issue of whether the convention could dissolve the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC), and appoint National Caretaker Committee, Justice Makhmud said the answer is dependent on the interpretation of articles 33 (2), 3, 4, 5 and 8.

“Applying the events that took place and the resolutions adopted at the national convention of May 21, 2016 in Port Harcourt, it is obvious that the dissolution of both the National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee was within the powers of the national convention and their article 5 (6), and the appointment of Caretaker Committee was also within the ambit of Article 5(e).

“In effect, it would be justified thought that the decisions taken at the convention to dissolve the two national organs of the party, NEC and NWC, was in line with the national convention. It is also important to point out that nothing in those decisions has violated any known laws or any decree of the court.

“The dissolution of the organs cannot be equated with conducting election as was enjoined by the suit in suit FHC/ AN/CS/613/2016 and suit number FHC/ AN/CS/63/37/2016.

“The convention as earlier on examined and determined was directed and targeted at election; the evidence before the court, clearly showed that the items on the agenda which is related to the election of the national officers was removed in reference to those court orders.

“In the light of the above analysis, as I come through the decision for conclusion resolving all the questions for determination set out in the originating summons, in the affirmative and consequently grant all the relief sought and I so grant.”

Markafi and Obi (Senators) were asking the court to validate the Port Harcourt convention and uphold all the decisions reached at the convention, including the legalisation of the National CTC members produced in the conference, and also to stop Senator Sheriff and Co. from further parading themselves as the National Chairman and Secretary of the Party.

The court granted al their prayers.

Speaking after the ruling, the plaintiffs’ counsel, Oladeji Olaminkoran said the judgement put to rest all the controversies surrounding PDP’s national convention held in Port Harcourt and the laying of claim to the national chairman and secretary Sheriff and the former national secretary.

He said: the ruling has confirmed that the national convention of the PDP held in this state on May 21, was legal and all its decisions are also legal.”

On the Federal High court order mandating Modu-Sheriff’s Executive to produce governorship candidates for Edo state denied knowledge of such order but said, “I am not aware of any such positive order, what I know is that the Federal High Court on Thursday made a decision, resolving the question of who should lawfully represent PDP as counsel in the matter before.

“Now as to the question of who has the power to produce or conduct primaries for the elections is part of the relieves granted in this judgement, that the National Care Taker Committee(CTC), led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi is the only body that has the full valid powers to conduct Primaries and submit same to INEC.

“Also there are orders binding INEC to respect and accept such nominations only from the National CTC appointed by the National convention of the PDP.

“The Judgement specifically determined that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has been validly removed as the Acting National chairman of the PDP and also that the National working committee and the National executive committee were validly dissolved by the convention of the Party which took place in Port Harcourt.

“The decisions and resolutions of the party in that convention have by this judgement been validated.” He concluded

Recall that PDP held parallel National convention in Port Harcourt and Abuja May 21. While the Acting National Chairman, Ali Modu-Sheriff convened that of Port Harcourt, the Party’s Elders organised the Abuja meeting. They were to elect their new executives in the convention.

The conventions however ended in deadlock. Instead of electing new leaders, the convention produced Care Taker Committee (CTC), members chaired by Senator Ahmad Markafi, to the chagrin of Senator Modu-Sheriff who vowed never to relinquish his office in that manner. He maintained that he remains the Acting chairman of the Party.

The newly appointed CTC chairman, approached the Court May 23 to seek an order of interim injunction to stop Sheriff from parading himself as the National chairman of PDP. They are also asking the court to validate the Port Harcourt convention which produced the CTC members.

Sheriff had shortly after the abandoning the Port Harcourt convention headed for the court in Abuja to challenge the legality of the Port Harcourt convention which produced Markafi, hinging on a purported order by the Abuja conveners to stop that of Port Harcourt.

At the last sitting, June 16, Parties made presentations on their positions. Four motions were filed by the both parties. While the plaintiffs, Senators Markafi and Ben Obi filed the originating summons on behalf of the PDP, Senator Modu-Sheriff and three others who are ate respondents filed three applications. They are,  Memorandum of condition appearance, dated and filed on May 26, Motion to discharge the interim order of court, dated May 25 and filed May 26 and notice of pre-notice preliminary objection dated and filed May 26.

Three of the motions were heard. But that bordering on the Experte order of interim injunction on Sheriff and co. as not heard, the court agreed that the timeline of 14 days for interim injunction has ended and should therefore not be over flogged.

However arguing on the originating summons, which bordered on the validity of the Port Harcourt convention and the agreements reached there, counsel for the Plaintiffs, Oladejo Olaminkoran, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN), urged the court to declare the convention legal, as against the declaration of the defence party.

In his argument, Olaminkoran claimed that the convention was legally convened and by the right persons empowered by the Party constitution to do so and therefore should be upheld.

“One of the reasons we have come to court is that only the court of law can declare a particular action as legal or illegal, but the position of the PDP is that the convention was lawful, legal, backed by the PDP convention and was convened by the body that is constitutionally empowered to call such convention, the National Executive Committee of the party which included at that time Sheriff and who was the Acting National chairman and the National Party Secretary, who are the main respondent in this suit.”

But the defendants represented in the court maintained that the court order by the conveners of the Abuja version of the conference invalidated the Port Harcourt, meeting and therefore should be dissolved and the decisions made in the convention declared null and void.

The former Party Acting Chairman urged the court to remove the name of PDP from the suit and dismiss the action for lack of merits. The matter was adjourned till yesterday for judgement.

The court yesterday ruled in favour of the Markafi-led CTC by declaring that Port Harcourt conference legitimate.

  • Again, Makarfi, Sheriff disagree on court’s ruling

Again, Makarfi, Sheriff disagree on court’s ruling

Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi and his rival PDP chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff have again disagreed on the latest court ruling in the party’s festering crisis.

A High Court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, had, on Monday, affirmed the Makarfi led caretaker committee as the authentic leader of the troubled party.

The court also affirmed the decision of the party sacking Sheriff as national chairman of the PDP and other former National Working Committee (NWC) members by the national convention in Port Harcourt.

In a statement in Abuja Monday, Makarfi expressed satisfaction with the judgment, regretting however that the crisis in the party had been taken this far.

He said; “I am indeed happy with the judgment, on the one hand but also sad that it had to come to this.

“For me there should be no winner or loser on this matter. I am still calling on Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his followers to join us so that we accommodate one another and indeed all other groups in a just, fair and equitable manner with a view to moving the party forward,” Makarfi added.
But in a swift reaction shortly after the judgment, Sheriff said the ruling by the Port Harcourt court cannot vitiate an earlier judgment delivered by an Abuja High Court which recognised him as the national chairman of the PDP.

The ‎former Borno state Governor insisted that he remains the party’s national chairman, despite the ruling of the court.

At a media briefing in Abuja Monday, Sheriff said he had already asked his lawyers to file a stay of execution against the ruling of the Port Harcourt court, adding that appeal process had also been initiated.

He argued that both the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt and the court in Abuja that affirmed his chairmanship of the party are of coordinate jurisdiction.

“I also want you to know that the court that gave judgment in Abuja High Court last week and the Federal High Court in Lagos, and today’s (Monday’s) judgment are all courts of same coordinate jurisdiction.

“Therefore the order we have in Abuja is still subsisting. What it means is that unless the Court of Appeal decides otherwise, I still remain the national chairman of the PDP.

“Any court that is of the same jurisdiction cannot overrule another court, only the Court of Appeal can do that.

“We disagree completely with today’s judgment. We have asked our lawyers to immediately file an appeal, and we have also asked the same court to stay execution on the judgment.”

  • Court’s pronouncement on Sheriff an afterthought – Makarfi group

Court’s pronouncement on Sheriff an afterthought – Makarfi group

The Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said the ex-parte order granted his rival, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, by a Federal High Court in Abuja is of no effect.

The court had on Thursday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept only the names of candidates submitted to it by Sheriff in respect of the upcoming governorship election in Edo and Ondo States.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the committee described the order as null and void, saying the court’s pronouncement was an afterthought.

“The ex-parte order granted to Ali Modu Sheriff’s rebellious group yesterday (Thursday) by the Honourable Justice Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja restricting INEC from accepting candidates for Edo and Ondo States 2016 gubernatorial elections from the PDP is of no effect, null and void. The PDP believes the order was granted in error by his Lordship due to misrepresentation of facts by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his co-travelers,” the statement said.

The committee further asserted that there were two court judgments of Tuesday, June 29 in Suit No: FCT/HC/CV/1867/2016 nullifying the 2014 amendments to the PDP Constitution used for the ratification of Sheriff’s predecessor, Dr. Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, as chairman.

It added: “The judgment is in effect setting aside the appointment of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who was appointed to complete the tenure of Muazu, and the second High Court judgment that vacated Sheriff’s suit is to the effect that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is not supposed to be chairman of the PDP in the first place.

“Nigerians and our teeming supporters will recall that the last court ruling that vacated Senator Sheriff’s suit on Thursday, June 30, 2016 even described him as a ‘busy body’ in the Judgment.

“How can the court then grant an ex-parte order to a busy-body who has no locus in the party affairs?”

The committee also described Sheriff’s deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojuogboh, as a rabble rouser, who is trying to hold on to the last straw for relevance.

Sheriff to Makarfi: Join me in moving PDP forward

The embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, has called on the party’s caretaker committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and the party’s governors to join hands with him in moving the party forward.

Speaking in Abuja through his National Deputy Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Sheriff said there was urgent need for stakeholders to consider political solution to the party’s festering crisis.

According to him, the various court cases instituted by the various groups against the party could drag till 2019, thereby robbing the party of the opportunity to present a common front for the 2019 general elections.

He described the party’s governors as the most vulnerable should the crisis continue, stressing that they could lose the opportunity for re-election.

Ojougboh said, “I appeal to governors and elders of the party to join hands with the leaders in moving the party forward. We need to find political solution to this crisis because the pending court cases could drag till 2019.

“We should be able to sit together and look at the problem dispassionately. The Port Harcourt convention was illegal so the caretaker committee is null and void.

“Sheriff is ready and willing to make peace but we must be ready to obey the rule of law and respect internal democracy. He is ready to hand over any day, but he is not prepared to be stampeded out office.”

The party chief noted that the crisis in the PDP is all about the 2019 presidential ticket, which he said has set different groups and interests against one another.

Insisting that the courts cannot solve the party’s crisis, Ojougboh said Sheriff was ready to organise a proper convention to elect a new set of national officers to run the affairs of the party.

He called on the governors and the party elders to formally dissolve the caretaker committee to enable the PDP make progress.

“The PDP under Sheriff will not rely on government or governors to fund its activities because members will be made to pay their dues and a system of accountability will ensure the judicious use of the funds,” Ojougboh added.

He described the awaited July 4 judgment by a court in Port Harcourt as a mere academic exercise, declaring that the June 30 ruling by another Abuja court had rendered the pending Port Harcourt ruling ineffectual.

Court to INEC: Recognize Sheriff’s candidates in Edo, Ondo

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting list of candidates for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo from other leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) except form the Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Justice Okon Abang in a ruling also granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining INEC, the PDP and their agents from dealing with or according any facility required by law (regarding the gubernatorial elections to be conducted by INEC in Edo and Ondo states) to any other persons or group other than the Sheriff, Prof. Wale Oladipo and Fatai Adeyanju -led NWC of the party

The judge directed INEC and the PDP and their agents to “recognize, deal with and accord all facilities required by law on the Sheriff group.

Justice Abang further directed INEC and the PDP to “reject and ignore any activity (including primary elections/congresses for the nomination of candidates for the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states, purportedly conducted on behalf of the 2nd defendant (PDP) by any other persons or group of persons other than the Sheriff group.

The judge said the interlocutory orders are to subsist pending the determination of the substantive suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/439/2016 filed by two governorship aspirants of the PDP in Edo and Ondo States – Chief Benson Akingboye (Ondo) and Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma (Edo).

PDP crisis: Court sacks Sheriff, others

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Apo, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional Chairman, Ali Modu- Sheriff and other officers of the party to refrain from parading themselves in those capacities.

Justice Valentine Ashi of Court 29, High Court of the FCT, Apo, in his ruling specifically restrain “individuals currently parading themselves as the national officers of the PDP on the basis of  the purported amendment to the PDP constitution at a special convention held in Abuja on December 10 and 11, 2014,” from doing so.

“By the 2014 amendment and effected on Article 47 Paragraph 6 of the PDP Constitution, in case of any vacancy, the party NEC will appoint an Acting Chairman from the area or zone where the last occupant of the offices comes from pending when election is conducted to reflect where there is a vacancy. The Acting Chairman shall serve the tenure of the officer who left before the expiration of the tenure,” the party said.

Justice Ashi declared the 2014 amendment  illegal on the ground that the party did not comply with Section 66(2) (3) of its constitution by not serving the National Secretary with a written copy of the proposed amendment two months before the convention, while the Secretary was also required to circulate the amendment among state secretaries of the party a month before the convention.

The judge, who stressed the need for PDP to strictly adhere to the provisions in its constitution, noted that the insertion of the clauses in section 66(2) and (3) was to deepen democracy in the party.

The judgment was on a suit filed by a PDP member from Irele local government area of Ondo State, Joseph Jero against the PDP.

The suit is marked: FCT/HC/CV/1867/2016. The PDP was the sole defendant in the suit.

  • Sheriff appoints Ojougboh as deputy PDP chairman

The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, has appointed the party’s former Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Cairo Ojougboh as the faction’s Deputy National Chairman.

This came just as another set of “chairmen” of state chapters of PDP endorsed Sheriff as the party’s “authentic” National Chairman.

Ojougboh was one of the party’s mainstream national officials that were removed at the party’s May 21 botched convention in Port Harcourt.

Ojougboh’s letter of appointment was jointly signed by Sheriff and the faction’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo.

The letter reads, “Please, be informed that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in a meeting held on the 28th of June 2016, and having received nomination from the Concerned PDP stakeholders (Abuja Convention Group) and major stakeholders in the South-south has appointed you as the Acting Deputy National Chairman of the party pending the conduct of election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the erstwhile Deputy National Chairman. This appointment takes immediate effect”.

Sheriff and Oladipo, through the letter, urged Ojougboh to discharge his functions with dedication to ensure the progress of the party.

    PDP crisis: Chairmen back Makarfi

The chairmen of state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have thrown their weight behind the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee.

The chapter chairmen, who paid a solidarity visit to Makarfi in Abuja yesterday, said they would continue to respect the decision of the May 21 national convention of the party that set up the  committee.

The leader of the delegation, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, said as delegates to the convention, they were bound by the outcome, adding that doing otherwise would amount to undermining the national leadership of the party.

Mohammed, who is the chairman of the Federal Capital Territory chapter, urged the factional national chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, to respect the decision of the convention in the in the overall interest of the party.

Makarfi said the crisis in the party was proof that the PDP is worth struggling for and that the committee’s mandate was to bring everybody on board.

According to him, dragging the crisis for too long could be injurious to the health of the party.

The Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, who presented the report of the party’s just concluded primary election in EdoState to Makarfi, said no individual can be greater than the party.

He also appealed to Sheriff to retrace his steps, even if he felt he had been wronged by the decision of the party.

“Leadership is for service and the party is ready to right whatever wrongs Sheriff might have suffered as a result of the party’s decision. Nobody has the powers to dissolve state executive committees except the National Executive Committee”, Umahi stated.

The chairmen of state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday threw their weight behind the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee.

The chairmen, who paid a solidarity visit to Makarfi in Abuja, said they would continue to respect the decision of the May 21 national convention of the party that set up the Makarfi committee.

Leader of the delegation, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed said as delegates to the convention, they were bound by the outcome of the convention, adding that doing otherwise would amount to undermining the national leadership of the party.

Mohammed, who is the chairman of the Federal Capital Territory chapter, urged the factional national chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, to respect the decision of the convention in the in the overall interest of the party.

He maintained that the Port Harcourt convention was a product of the party’s constitution.

Responding, Makarfi said the crisis in the party was proof that the PDP is worth struggling for and that the committee’s mandate was to bring everybody on board.

According to him, dragging the crisis for too long could be injurious to the health of the party, adding that the committee’s mandate did not include dissolution of the existing state executives.

PDP crisis: Sheriff sacks Edo PDP, names caretakers

•Ignore him, Makarfi faction tells party chiefs

Last week’s election of Pastor OsagieIze-Iyamu as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September election in Edo State has set the Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi’s factions of the party on a fresh collision course.

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who, until recently was the PDP acting national chairman, yesterday suspended the state executive committee of the party “sequel to various petitions deriving from allegations of irregularities arising from the last state congresses that sought to elect State Executive Committee for the chapter.”

He had earlier nullified the Plateau State congress of the party and promised to set machinery in motion for the emergence of a fresh executive committee for the state PDP.

Sheriff and the National Secretary of the PDP, Prof. Wale Oladipo, in a statement in Abuja yesterday, said the suspension of the Edo PDP exco was part of the decision taken at the NWC meeting of June 21, 2016.

They said the suspension would enable the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party investigate the allegations contained in the petitions and come out with a fair and just decision.

Sheriff proceeded to appoint an eight-member caretaker committee to run the affairs of the state chapter for a period of three months.

The members are: Chief Ebenezer Alabi (chairman); Barr. Zealiwe Edmund (secretary); EhimekpenOkharedia, Mrs. Melody EkunneOsagie, Blessing Agbabaku, Negerese Berry, Hon Daniel OhioleAsekhame and Mr.DanOmozokpai as members.

The Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee, in a swift reaction, asked the Edo state chapter of the party to ignore the suspension order.

It said: “Procedures for taking such far reaching decisions are prescribed in the constitution of the party, so it’s the organ so empowered to take it.

“It is no longer news that the Ali Modu Sheriff led National Working Committee and indeed all national officers were removed by the party’s convention, which is the highest decision making organ of the party,” it added in a statement by spokesman for the committee, Prince AdedayoAdeyeye.

Continuing, he said: “This purported suspension is clearly part of the desperation of Senator Sheriff and his paymasters to orchestrate confusion that would lead to the failure of the party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State; an election that the party is otherwise very well placed to win.

“The Caretaker Committee recognises and would continue to relate with the leadership of the party in Edo State that was validly elected at the recent congresses, even as it calls on the members and teeming supporters of the party in the state to remain steadfast and vigilant in the face of the mischief being perpetrated by Sheriff in order to destroy the party.

“The Caretaker Committee also appeals to the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services and indeed all security agencies to call Sheriff to order as well as keep more than an eye on him so that he doesn’t precipitate crisis in any part of the country for which he is well known, since we, as Nigerians already have enough on our hands to contend with.”

Also reacting to the purported suspension, the chairman of the Edo PDP, Chief Dan Orbih said Sheriff lacked powers to suspend any state chapter.

He said: “For us in Edo State PDP, we will ignore the ranting of Sheriff and face the business of defeating Adams Oshiomhole and his surrogate, that is, their APC candidate.”

Orbih said Sheriff’s action was a clear indication that he is not a true member of the PDP.

He added: “Let me quickly remind Sheriff that we, members of the National Executive, were the ones that appointed him as an acting chairman.

“He was never elected as chairman of the party and he should atop arrogating powers that he doesn’t possess to himself.

“The only body that is constitutionally empowered by the party to carry out the functions of the national executives of the party today is that of the Makarfi-led national executive, which by law is the national executives in place.

“At the time we appointed Sheriff to act as the national chairman, we gave him a mandate that should last for three months and at the end of the three months, we never renewed his mandate.

“I advise him to stay clear of Edo PDP and face his political integration in Borno where since he left office as governor has been a hotbed of political crisis.”

In nullifying the Plateau PDP congress earlier, Sheriff also dismissed claim by the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee that he was working for the APC.

He said: “Makarfi should shut up” and threatened to expose the committee chairman and Ben Obi, its national secretary.

At the meeting with the Plateau delegation, which pledged support for him, the factional leader of the opposition party said he would soon inaugurate a committee to organise a fresh congress in the state.

Sheriff alleged that Makarfi and Obi had been paying secret visits to an APC chieftain.

He challenged them to dare him and see how he would expose them.

“If there are people in the PDP working for the APC, it’s Makarfi and Obi. Makarfi should not force me to reveal details that I should not reveal under normal circumstances,” he said.

“Makarfi and Obi have gone to visit one APC chieftain in his house twice and this particular individual is still in the APC. It would have been better if the man had left the APC to join the PDP.

“They are reserving the 2019 presidential ticket of the PDP for this individual who has been funding their activities.

“If Makarfi continues to attack my person, I will be forced to reveal further details of their alliance. So, Makarfi should just shut up.”
