PDP holds campaign rally on Akure highway

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has prepared the stage to flag-off its campaign rally on the busy Oba Adesida -Oyemekun highway.

This was due to the refusal of the Ondo State Government to allow the PDP use the Democracy Park as venue for the rally.

A statement from the Ondo Government claimed the PDP applied for the use of Democracy Park on October 11,  2024.

It said another support group had already booked and secured approval for the use of Democracy Park on same date.

According to the statement: “The M.K.O. Abiola Park (Democracy Park) is a revenue-generating property of the state government, open to all citizens and residents who apply early and follow the proper procedures to secure approval.

“Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is a refined gentleman, far too dignified to engage in the petty and indecent politicking the PDP has wrongfully accused him of.”

But spokesman for the Ondo PDP Campaign Council, Ayo Fadaka, urged the people to blame what he termed ‘irresponsibility of the pedestrian government’ as the cause of any inconveniences they might suffer during the rally.

Heavy vehicular traffic is expected to occur on the road.

As of press time, security Personnel were seen making plans on how to divert traffic from the area.

Everyone was body-searched before being allowed into the TBS before the event commenced.

  • Obasanjo storms PDP rally in Ogun

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday stormed House of Representatives member Ladi Adebutu’s political rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo, who dressed in white kaftan, caused a stir and excitements among the crowd when he dashed into the rally and waved.

But the former President, who announced that he had quitted partisan politics in the build-up to the 2015 general elections, did not speak during the brief moment he appeared at the rally at an expanse ground within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in  Abeokuta.

Adebutu urged Nigerians in all levels of leadership to provide good governance to the people, saying that is the only way to secure their “exalted positions and wealth.”

Adebutu said high and mighty fences or trenches could hardly secure but would just entraps one in an environment of poor governance.

The lawmaker representing Remo Federal Constituency in Ogun State, gave the advice  at the Ake Palace, Abeokuta, when he met with the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, and his chiefs prior to the rally at OOPL.

He was at the Palace to thank the Paramount ruler for his prayer in 2015 when he was contesting for the current seat being occupied by him at the lower chamber of the  National Assembly and to also seek further blessings from the royal father ahead of his 2019 governorship ambition in the state.

Adebutu said good governance would bring genuine growth and development to the people and curbs corruption.

He also noted with proper orientation, fear of God and compassion for others, a leader would able to shun corruption.

According to him, if one has the compassion for others at heart, it would be difficult for one to appropriate collective wealth for persona benefits.

  • Fayemi condemns holiday for PDP rally

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation has criticised Governor Ayodele Fayose for declaring yesterday a public holiday to draft civil servants to PDP campaign rally.

A statement by the Director of Media and Publicity, Wole Olujobi, slammed the governor for turning Ekiti State to a jungle where decent behaviour has no place in political conduct.

“It is regrettable that Fayose is everyday painting Ekiti State in his own image of incredulity where decent conduct is thrown overboard for political expediency.

“For declaring holiday today for workers to attend a political rally, besides subjecting Ekiti State to  ridicule among Nigerians, that decision shows clearly that Fayose has lost the support of his party members, thousands of whom defected to APC in recent times over alleged greed, indecent conduct and selfishness.

“The choice of the venue of the rally on a major highway is instructive, as it became clear that he would not be able to muster enough crowds that would not betray him as a spent politician.”

  • Speaker, Governor’s Aide fingered in killing by community at PDP rally

Speaker, Governor’s Aide fingered in killing by community at PDP rally

Residents of Nwofe Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have protested the death one of them, Elias Nwankwegu.

Elias, who is the brother of a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Augustine Nwankwegu, was killed at the weekend during a political rally allegedly organised by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Francis Nwifuru.

Emmanuel Nwofe has been arrested for the crme but he denied being involved.

The people carried placards to protest Elias’s death, and accused Nwifuru and Special Assistant to the Governor on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Martin Okwuegbu, of complicity.

The deceased’s elder brother, Samson Nwankwegu, said he was at another event when someone called to inform him of the incident.

He said: “We learnt that the boy was called to come to the rally that he is going to be given machine. Getting there, three boys accosted him and one of the boys, Emma, pulled a gun and shot him. We were not there to rescue him and I learnt he died before he was taken to the hospital.

“We don’t know who took him to the hospital and we don’t know where the body is. They said the Speaker organised the rally for his re-election and wanted to distribute motorcycles to his supporters. My brother’s killer, Emma Nwofe, is one of the Speaker’s boys. This incident happened about 2pm beside the rally ground.”

The deceased’s widow, Ukamaka Nwankwegu, lamented the death of her husband.

She said: “My husband told me in the morning that he would get a motorcycle which had been promised for long so I told him to give me my own motorcycle which we have been sharing as I wanted to visit my mother’s village and he agreed.

“When I got to my mother’s village, people were staring at me. I asked my mother if she heard that someone was shot at the party meeting and she told me to stop asking her questions. She later told me to go home and I left. It was when I got home that they told me what happened.

“Who will help me take care of my two children now that he is dead?”

But Nwifuru denied having a hand in Elias’s death. The speaker and the deceased’s brother, a former speaker, Nwankwegu, have been having a running battle since Nwifuru defeated Nwankwegu in 2010.

Nwifuru’s spokesman, Tony Nwizi, exonerated his boss from the murder. He said the gathering was a ward meeting and not a rally to seek support for Nwifuru’s re-election.

He said: “What happened is that the party was supposed to hold a ward meeting there. The ward is not even Nwifuru’s ward, but the Current Attorney-General Cletus Ofoke, who is from the ward, begged Mr Speaker to attend the meeting.”

Nwizi said Nwifuru decided to make a brief stop at the meeting on his way to Ikwo council for a burial before the incident happened.

“So it was not a rally in support of Mr. Speaker but ward meeting. If Nwifuru wants to declare intention to re-contest, he will call a

constituency meeting. Even if he wants to declare at a ward meeting, he will have to do that at his own ward and Nwofe Agbaja is not his ward,” Nwizi added.

Special Assistant to the governor on IGR, Martin Okwuegbu, who was also accused of complicity in the murder, was evasive.

He cancelled his 2pm interview appointment on the excuse of travelling.

  • APC to Kwarans: Vote Jonathan out

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has urged Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan in next month general election.

The party said Nigeria is “profusely bleeding” because the President has nothing more to offer in his present capacity.

The APC in a statement signed by its spokesperson in the state, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, described the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential rally in Ilorin as “celebration of failure.”

    The statement reads:

“The presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ilorin was a celebration of failure.

“We had expected the presidential candidate of PDP, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to tell Kwarans why he deserves re-election and also offer solutions to the challenges of Nigeria, but surprisingly, President Jonathan chose to waste the ample opportunity of the rally on political commentary.

“Kwarans should note that since President Goodluck Jonathan failed to tell them why he deserves re-election during his scantly-populated presidential rally in Ilorin, Kwarans have the responsibility to massively vote him out of office.

“Anyone who carefully listened to Mr. President’s speech would mistake him for an inexperienced comedian who struggled in futility to impress his audience.

“Despite the disbursement of millions in naira by President Jonathan’s foot-soldiers and Abuja politicians to induce Kwarans to attend the rally, the scantly populated rally shows that Kwara State is a no-go area for the PDP.

“It is no longer news that President Jonathan is yet to fulfill any of the electoral promises he made to Kwarans in 2011. It is also apparent that Mr. President has no achievement whatsoever in the state and we do not expect him to lay claim to false assertions or take credit for non-existing projects.

“However, rather than his political commentary, it would have been of interest to the people of Kwara State if Mr. President had used the avenue of his presidential rally to tell them when he will refund the over N4billion the Kwara State government used to execute and rehabilitate the Ilesha-Baruba-Chikanda international border road and federal road projects across the state.”

  • Collation of recovered illegal arms starts today

Collation of recovered illegal arms starts today

The Lagos State Police Command will start the collation of unlicensed firearms recovered by its Area Command todays.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, on September 23 gave two weeks to those in possession of illegally acquired firearms to return them.

    The ultimatum expired on Monday.

Aderanti who frowned at the high level of arms proliferation in the state, said a special task force would be set up to comb the state and recover illegal firearms after the expiration of the ultimatum.

Aderanti ordered area commanders to create a desk for receiving such arms, adding that those who do not surrender theirs after the expiration of the ultimatum would be treated as armed robbers.

“A lot of individuals that are not licensed use it to intimidate and harass innocent persons. After two weeks, anyone who does not return the illegally acquired weapons will be dealt with. We will not accept any reason for not returning the weapons.  We will treat anybody caught in illegal possession of firearms as an armed robber. I am not happy with the number of arms in wrong hands. We would deal with anybody who intends to unleash mayhem on the state. We are entering another phase and there should be a level playing ground’’, Aderanti said.

The command’s spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), told to The Nation that after the sallah break, area commanders are expected to give report on the level of compliance.

He said: “Yes the ultimatum has expired and after the holidays the area commands are expected to come and give their reports. The CP directed all Area commands to establish a desk for the collection. After their reports, the Command will know the next step to take”.

The ultimatum followed the murder of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APC), Alhaji Azeez Asake last month in Lagos Island.

Asake was allegedly killed by thugs loyal to the Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally, attended by President Goodluck Jonathan and the party’s National chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, among others.

  • Kwankwaso shuns Jonathan in Kano

    Kwankwaso shuns Jonathan in Kano

…  He didn’t vote for me – President

Kano state Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso and his cabinet on Tuesday shunned President Goodluck Jonathan who visited the state for a Peoples Democratic Party welcome rally for Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

Kwankwaso’s refusal to receive President Jonathan and his entourage to Kano may not be unconnected with the governor’s earlier statement where he said that Kano people will not welcome the President because he has not done anything to better the lot of Nigerians since he assumed leadership of the country.

The governor said he regretted voting for President Jonathan, pointing out that the President has disappointed Nigerians.

“I regretted voting for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 Presidential Election, as he has done nothing to move the nation forward. Only a few people are enjoying in Nigeria at the expense of the generality of the citizenry,” he said.

But the President fired back at Kwankwaso during the rally, saying the All Progressive Congress chieftain didn’t vote for him, just as he vowed that come 2015, “PDP must recapture Kano.”

He also challenged the governor to account for over N225 billion Local Government funds he received from the Federal Allocation within two years.

The President said, “We read in some of the daily newspapers that the Governor of Kano state, Kwankwaso, said he regretted voting for me. Let me tell my good people of Kano that Kwankwaso did not vote for me or Vice President Namadi Sambo whether in the primaries or the main election.

“We have accommodated a lot, but we talk less. Those of you from Kano in PDP knew what happened that when we entered that Eagle Square; by the time the counting got up to half-way – when it was clear that I was to emerge as the candidate, Kwankwaso left the venue.

“Even the little money my campaign office provided for refreshment and transportation for Kano delegates, Kwankwaso refused to give them that money. He did that so that the Kano delegates will be angry and would not vote for me.”
