  • How PDP ‘ll get Nigeria working again, by Obi

THE Atiku Abubakar administration will “concentrate on project implementation to a measurable level Nigerians would see, feel and appreciate”, his running mate Peter Obi said yesterday.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) vice presidential candidate said the problem with Nigeria was more due to inefficiency in programme implementation rather than policy formulation.

Obi, who spoke during a live interview on Channels TV, said: “This APC government has for long formulated different, beautiful policies, but the problem is with implementation.

“The Atiku Government would concentrate on project implementation to a measurable level Nigerians would see, feel and appreciate.”

On how many megawatts of power Atiku government would add, Obi, who insisted that four years was enough for meaningful improvement in the sector, said there was a clear roadmap that would be discussed in details during longer programmes.

The PDP vice presidential candidate criticised the present government for its lack of proper projects implementation and transparency, saying that the quantum of money already said to have been borrowed did not match the projects that were actually executed.

He added that the problem is not with borrowing, but actually utilising the money borrowed for productive projects rather than in consumption and waste, as rampantly witnessed in Nigeria till today.

“To get Nigeria working again, the inefficiency, incompetence and anti-people policies that have long characterised the APC-led government of Nigeria must be reversed,” Obi said.

  • ‘PDP desperate for power’

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State have accused members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of being desperate for power.

They said the February presidential election had exposed PDP office seekers and their supporters, adding that APC would not give them any opportunity.

The APC Senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Sylvester Okonkwo, and another party chieftain, Modestus Umenzekwe, said the PDP’s scheme would be in vain.

Umenzekwe said the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari in Anambra and Southeast had led PDP to such jealousy and desperation.

According to him, PDP and its candidates wanted to return to power to start siphoning the country’s treasure, which this administration had been trying to put in order since 2015.

Umenzekwe said no right-thinking person would vote for another party considering the work Buhari and his government did in the state; from Zik’s mausoleum, second Niger Bridge, among others.

Okonkwo said he was going to the red chamber to provide for his people.

He regretted the lack of adequate representation from those who had gone there, except Dr. Chris Ngige, accusing them of looking after their pockets without considering the people who voted for them.

  • PDP seeks probe

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPCO) has called for an investigation into the alleged diversion of military funds by members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s family.

According to the PDP, the funds were allegedly used to acquire shares in 9 Mobile Nigeria and Keystone Bank Plc.

The main opposition party linked cronies and family members of the President to the alleged diversion of the funds, estimated to be N1.032 trillion.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja yesterday, the PDP campaign spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, called for an independent system-wide investigation involving the INTERPOL, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Ologbondiyan said there was urgent need for concerted investigation by such agencies, following President Buhari’s failure to directly speak out on the allegations.

He urged the security agencies to grill the unnamed cronies to explain how they came about the funds they used in the acquisition of shares.

Ologbondiyan said: “We make this demand in view of public insinuations that the money may have been sourced from funds meant for the purchase of weapons for our soldiers.

“More so, the Buhari Presidency has blatantly refused to respond to allegations that military fund is being used to finance President Buhari’s re-election campaign, which even manifested in the use of military resources to produce APC’s campaign materials, including an electronic momento book by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Muhammad Dan-Ali.

“The PDPCO is deeply worried by the disturbing videos of our gallant soldiers languishing and being killed by insurgents due to neglect and failure of the Buhari administration to adequately equip them in the fronts.

“The PDPCO is also unhappy by similar videos, showing our soldiers protesting and threatening to retreat from the fronts…

“This should not be the way to go for our nation. Our soldiers are brave and have continued to show the highest form of professionalism and unmatched patriotism in risking and laying down their lives in defence of fatherland.”

The PDP also said it had uncovered fresh plots by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to compromise the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the 2019 general elections.

It cautioned the chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately disentangle himself and the Commission from the alleged plot to compromise the electoral guideline and pave the way for the alteration of results of the 2019 general elections in favour of the ruling party.

He said:  “The PDP also demands that INEC allows both local and international observers to its situation room to ensure that the final figures are not tampered with.”

  • President has conceded poll with new year message, says PDP

THE People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 New Year message as “pathetically empty”.

The party added that it showed that he has finally given up, following his “rejection” by Nigerians.

According to the main opposition party, Buhari could not articulate any concrete commitment on any sector of national life.

A statement yesterday by PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan added that the President was bereft of ideas and has lost projections, having allegedly realised that Nigerians were not ready to give him a second term in office.

The statement said: “Even when he admitted in his opening speech that the turn of the New Year is a time for stock-taking and unfolding of new prospects, Nigerians are invited to note that Mr. President, in his entire speech, could not point to any single achievement he made in the out-going year, neither could he unfold any development prospect for the New Year.

“Indeed, any discerning mind could see that President Buhari has finally switched into valedictory mode, having realised that Nigerians have seen through the falsehood, lies and deception that have characterised his incompetent and corrupt presidency for almost four years.

“President Buhari has no prospects on security despite the daily killings in the land. Even as a Commander-In- Chief, he has no words for our gallant troops daily laying down their lives and fighting insurgents in the Northeast. He had no soothing word for the victims of bloodlettings in various parts of the country.”

  • 2019: Buhari will win In over 30 States, Ajulo Assures

Renowned Human Rights Lawyer and Secretary of Forward With Buhari (FWB), Dr. Kayode Ajulo has declared that the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari will clear out votes in over 30 states of the federation in the February 16 polls.
Dr. Ajulo gave the assurance in an  interview basing his predictions on well-researched information gathered on the field ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The group had earlier explained that the initiative of its formation was aimed at checkmating vote rigging across the nation in the 2019 presidential elections, further claimed that President Buhari’s main challenger, Atiku Abubakar will not win even in his State, Adamawa.

Also asked about how many votes the group intends to garner for the incumbent president, Ajulo had this to say:
“We intend to give Buhari maximum votes, what distinguishes us is that as an Independent Campaign Group, our members cut across the various parties and interest groups and with the coordination of the Governors as inspired by Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state, we have penetrated all the 36 States, 774 Local Governments, 8, 809 Wards, and the entire 119, 973 polling units in Nigeria.
Our formulae are solid, the governors, political and community leaders hold the ace in this election and we will back them to make the re-election a success.

“We have also found out too, although I won’t like to reveal most of our strategies, as only a retard Army General that doesn’t understand his commission would reveal his strategy. We want to ensure that those who have not been voting are encouraged to vote, and in that way discourage voters apathy. “In most of the previous general election only 30-35 per cent of the registered voters who have permanent voters cards voted. “Where are the other 70 per cent or there about? It is our duty to look for them, go for them and ensure that they vote.”
The astute legal practitioner who was criticized in some quarters for rooting for President Buhari also clarified his status in the ruling party and his main objectives for supporting Mr. President in the forthcoming polls.
“Moreover, Like, I (Kayode Ajulo) speaking, I am not a card carry member of APC till today. I am not in APC. “As you know, I voluntarily resigned as National Secretary of Labour Party and I’m yet to declare for APC, this I can’t do alone, I can’t join any party under the table and anytime I’m ready, I won’t be alone but with all those that believe in me. It would be done with pomp and pageantry such occasion deserves.
“But when it comes to this Project to re-elect Buhari, I consider myself as No. 1 of those behind him. That really raises one fundamental revelation, and that is for you to know that the number of people rooting and agitating that Buhari should be re-elected as President are more than the members of APC. Please do your research,” Ajulo said.
“Forward With Buhari is a deliberate composition of professionals, Politicians, unionists, civil societies and dynamic young people, I’m from Labour background, it’s solidarity themed, hence Forward With Buhari as we use to say, Forward For Ever!
Our name is to show our determination.”
  • How APC can defeat PDP in Delta, by chieftain

Otunba Princewill Ejogharado is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State. In this interview with OKUNGBOWA AIWERIE, he speaks on the post-primary crisis and how to end the strife and rancour.

The Delta APC is in crisis but the national leadership of the party has set up a reconciliation committee  headed by former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. What is your reaction?

You see some of the approaches to the resolution of this near intractable problem in the APC are mostly exercises in self-deception. You see it isvery obvious that we don’t seem to be ready with the way we are going and it is very unfortunate. We read it on paper that there were some reconciliation committee and from the composition of the reconciliation committee those guys were not really ready for reconciliation so it’s an exercise in self deception, so there is nothing on ground now that can sincerely show that we are ready to reconcile with each other as it is, it is very very hard on the Fortune of the party APC in Delta State.

Don’t you think that this crisis will impact negatively on your party during the poll?

The truth of the matter is I will say it is rather most unfortunate the way  Adams Oshiomhole handled the Delta State issue, Delta State. This was a state that was prepared for a take over, just go to Asaba the state capital and do a covert investigation and talk with people along the streets including civil servants and all of them if they know that you are an APC member they will remonstrate with you angrily asking why we behaving like this? Asking, “Do you want to allow this people to continue for another four years”? You can see the anger in them, you can even see now that the electorates are more bothered than the stakeholders in APC, they want a change, a change that is very very clear and possible but here we are. Sometimes, I take my analysis from the local government elections, when the last Local Government election that took place on the 5th of January there was this divide between Omo Agege/ Ogboru vs Emerhor but it was very evident that APC was ready to take over, the difference was not a problem at the local polls. We are all aware of the flaws the local government electoral law but we came together and we made the sitting government to take note, but at the APC national convention we expected that as a party chairman , Oshiomhole should have done some intelligence gathering about the peculiarities of Delta State, whether you like it or not Delta State is a very peculiar state in Nigeria. I will find it very funny if there is a any government in power at the centre who  ignores Delta State and doesn’t pull Delta State along, so with this we were very ready, some of us left the PDP with high hopes and we felt the APC was an alternative for us to achieve our purposes, actually when we came in we were really ready to provide the politics that will help us take over but alas when we got there we saw something different especially the handling of the congress issue. Oshiomhole messed everything up so that even now you can see that the PDP in the state are quietly walking into success because we are more engaged with ourselves in the APC and nobody is even talking about the PDP and the election we are talking about how I will outdo you and how you will outdo me. You can see that we are having factions on the eve of an election. O’tega Emerhor who was the original leader of the party in the state  has been shoved aside. Suddenly Ogboru came and I can’t understand what is happening. I wouldn’t say that the O’tega is a perfect person but this man is the man who has been holding the party together you cannot just come and push him away like that but Oshiomhole for God knows why just came and he doesn’t want to have anything to do with Otega, if the truth must be said I have always said that Oshiomhole took personal vendetta into human administration and it is very very wrong that is the problem in Delta state, Oshiomhole brought in personal vendetta to bear on the problem of Delta State if not Oshiomhole knows very well that Cyril Ogodo is the Chairman of the party but for the singular mistake he made, there . We were made to understand that in the countdown to the National Convention , Oshiomhole called a meeting to the Government House in Edo State and Prophet Jones Erue , unilaterally , attended but Cyril challenged Jones for attending Oshiomhole’s campaign meeting, that is what has brought problem to the Delta State APC,but you don’t carry your personal vendetta to party administrstion so it has helped in no small way to reduce the party’s chances at the gubernatorial polls in 2019 to the barest minimum, PDP is coasting to victory quietly with no stress.

You have just said that Oshiomhole  brought personal vendetta into the party. Can you really substantiate that because it appears Prophet Jones Erue emerged from a parallel congress conducted by another  faction?

You see, let us take it from this angle there was a national chairman Oyegun who conducted all the congresses from the ward to the national level. It was Oyegun that produced Oshiomhole, if the making of Ogodo that Oyegun  made is not good, then Oshiomhole is not good too.Oshiomhole will always say that we are all Bendelites, we are all Bendelites so he sees Delta State as his own. The Oyegun that conducted the elections that was transparent. Oyegun and his  National Working Committee to send the Electoral panel to all the states which they did ,but along the line I think we were made to understand that there was some compromise somewhere there, it remains the right of Oyegun the national chairman and his Excos to correct the anomalies if there was any and that he did immediately, it is not the right of Oshiomhole to correct that because he was not the Chairman then, he came out with the mindset that he was coming to deal with the O’tega tendencies and that is what he has embarked on not minding the negative impact it will have to bear on the party in the state, that is where we are now.

The national leadership of APC has urged aggrieved party men to withdraw their cases from the court but gubernatorial aspirants Victor Ochie and Prof Pat Utomi   have gone ahead. Why?

Like I told you I was a party Chairman and I was a Local Government Chairman and if you critically look at the constitution of the party structure they all have the same function whether as State Chairman, National Chairman and Local Government Chairman and even the ward Chairman our functions are almost duplicated. So you see sometimes you take some decisions that are belated, you can do the right thing in the wrong way, trying to tell those who are already in court to withdraw their cases is doing the right thing in the wrong way and at the wrong time. It’s belated. Everybody knows that Oshiomhole has taken sides how would I know that and still come to him for justice. In Delta State Oshiomhole has clearly taken sides with Omo-Agege/Ogboru. It is very clear the extent of damage that Oshiomhole has caused our party that was already prepared to take over. I was thinking that Oshiomhole was going to look beyond his personal vendetta and look at the party and the fortune of the party but this he hasn’t done, but he has allowed his personal vendetta to becloud his sense of judgement, that is the problem we are having in Delta state. How can Rt Hon.Victor Ochei whom I see as the only candidate that the PDP doesn’t want at all because they know that he is a candidate that will give victory to the APC, be treated with disdain? I am personally thinking that whatever Ochei is going through today is being sponsored by the opposition party because they know his emergence as the candidate of the party will throw them off balance. If Ochei had emerged as the candidate the party I am telling you that there would have been a tsunami in Delta state and lots of high ranking persons in the PDP will have decamped from the PDP. Some times I wonder if our National Chairman is consciously or unconsciously trading off the state from the APC because he is too close to Delta not to know. That is why every reasonable member of APC in Delta State should support Victor Ochei, we know where Utomi belongs to and I like him as a person, he is very intelligent man but politically he cannot give APC victory in Delta state, but Ochei has the name he belongs to them, he knows them, he was the speaker of the state, he was a member of Delta state caucus and not just being a member he has a very influential personality he usually dominates every environment, there is no way Ogboru can win this state for APC so we need a candidate that will win this state, whether you like it or not, we have a unwritten political agreement in Delta state, in 1999 the PDP did their 8 years through James Ibori and Delta South through Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan comprising Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko did their 8 years and now it is the turn of Delta North. The candidacy of Ogboru is unnecessary troubleshooting we the practical politicians solved this problem and we started seeking for somebody who we know and we can use to deal with the PDP and get our victory that is why some of us who knows the potency of Ochei’s candidacy aligned ourselves with Ochei , Ochei is the former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly had a legacy that had not been matched since he left there, go there you can see the tenure of Ochei as the speaker should he be the Governor of this state Asaba will become a different story, Delta State the richest state with one of the poorest and dirtiest state capital.

  • Why I defected to PDP – Ortom

Gov Samuel Ortom has said that he chose to pursue his governorship ambition on the platform of the PDP because it was a more credible alternative for him to achieve his policies.

Ortom stated this on Monday in Makurdi, during the flag-off of his governorship campaign.

The governor, who won his election on the platform of the APC where he defected to, after losing the PDP governorship ticket in 2014, returned to the PDP some months ago.

“We had to abandon that platform in search of one that offers more accommodation and support for our policies, especially the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017,” he said.

He regretted that highly paced officials in the APC-led Federal Government made various attempts to frustrate an imperative legislation aimed at finding lasting peace between farmers and herders in the state.

“Such frustrating efforts by highly placed members of the federal government necessitated my exit from the party to one that will not compromise our stance on a matter so key to the Benue people.

“This is the platform on which we seek the renewal of our mandate. No one will bend us as far as the Ranching Law is concerned because we draw consent and sustained support from the Benue people,” he said.

Ortom, while reacting to critics’ allegation that he had not performed, declared that he had done well “given the circumstances of our economy and unwarranted aggression and attacks on Benue”.

“I may not be a genius, but I perfectly know what I wanted as a governor. I cannot lie to the people that trust me. Take this truth from me; my government has done well, and statistics don’t lie.”

Commenting on the issue of nonpayment of salaries, the governor said that funds were being sourced to pay outstanding arrears of salaries, gratuities, and pensions.

Also speaking, the former Senate President, David Mark, appealed to the Benue electorate to vote massively for all candidates seeking elections on the party’s platform to secure a better future for the state.

The immediate former governor of the state and a senatorial candidate of the party, Mr Gabriel Suswam, accused the APC of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

He, therefore, urged the people to vote for the PDP and reject the APC.

Earlier, in his remarks, former Minister of Interior, Mr Abba Moro, also a senatorial candidate, assured Ortom that the people from Benue South Senatorial zone would vote for the PDP.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that dignitaries at the event included the National Deputy Secretary of the party, Mr Emmanuel Agbo, an ex senate president, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, PDP board member, Mrs. Margaret Icheen, and Ortom’s appointees.(NAN)

  • PDP hits Buhari for not attending Shagari’s burial

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has knocked President Muhammadu Buhari for not attending the burial of former President Shehu Shagari in Sokoto on Saturday.

The main opposition party said Buhari’s absence at the funeral, particularly regarding Shagari’s status, as the first Executive President of the country, was unpardonable and a very wrong precedence in national protocol.

A statement on Monday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Buhari’s absence at the burial has also sent a wrong signal to the international community on the country’s national values and respect for its patriots.

The PDP noted Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was also absent at Shagari’s burial and that the Federal Government has taken no concrete steps to give a state honour to the late former President.

The party described the directive by President Buhari for the nation’s flag to fly half-mast for just three days in honour of Shagari as belated.

It also knocked the President for visiting the Shagari family in Sokoto after the burial.

“Sadly, while our beloved President Shagari was at the National Hospital Abuja, passing through his last moments on this realm, President Buhari was busy at his campaign rally in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, boasting of how he, as military head of state, sacked the Second Republic, arrested and locked up President Shehu Shagari and his officials, in clear violation of our nation’s constitution.

“Such disdain on our respected national figure by President Buhari is completely unpresidential.

“Finally, the PDP once again condoles with the Shagari family, the government and people of Sokoto state, the National Council of State and the entire nation for this very huge national loss”.

  • ‘PDP will win Rivers in 2019’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State is sure it will win the 2019 elections.

A statement yesterday by the Director of Information and Communications, Emma Okah, said the PDP has worked hard, fulfilled promises made, and served the people well.

The statement reads: “In 2015, Governor Nyesom Wike, in his convictions, went round the state and saw the plight of his people, felt their pulse, shared their pain and promised to turn things around for good.

“Today, the state is more developed than what he met. Because of this, the 2019 election will be between a governor who has earned the people’s trust and others who have no traceable signature.

“Sentiments are running high as to what the people should expect, and the responses show a good measure of appreciation and gratitude for lifting the state higher.

“There was recession, but Wike ran a divine economy, prudently managed resources and provided infrastructure where those who had money failed to. He unchained the judiciary, proclaimed autonomy to the judiciary and granted access to justice.

“Those who bore the pain of a caged legislature, unpaid salary arrears, failed secondary and tertiary medical facilities, anomalies of the last government, can attest today that there is a new breeze blowing across the state since 2015.”

Okah noted that the 2019 elections will be a jamboree and a walk over as there is no credible alternative to the towering political height of Wike as a governor and candidate.              He urged the people to be bold, vote the PDP and resist the return of those “who plundered our common wealth and sold our patrimony to strangers”.

  • 2019: APC, PDP face cash crunch for campaigns

    • Agency places 24-hour surveillance on bank transactions
    • Commission warns bureau de change operators
    • Presidency: Dangote not member of APC Campaign Council

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democra-tic Party (PDP) may be facing an uphill task raising sufficient funds for their campaigns ahead of next year’s elections, an investigation by The Nation has revealed.

Large scale individual and corporate donors have not been forthcoming with cash to assist the parties as it used to be in the past, it was gathered.

They are said to be scared of getting trapped by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other security agencies some of which are already mounting a strict surveillance on transactions in the financial sector as the elections draws nearer.

The anti-graft agency is understood to have put a special team of detectives on standby to monitor banking transactions round the clock.

Other detectives of the EFCC have been deployed at airports and seaports to prevent importation of slush funds into the country while the agency has warned Bureau De Change operators against serving as couriers for slush cash for election purpose.

On its part, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is focusing on e-transactions than cash flow which is preferred by many politicians.

The move is to make it difficult for politicians to buy votes before, during and after elections.

Unlike what happened in the build-up to the 2015 general elections when banks were hauling cash in bullion vans and chartered planes across the country for politicians, some   banks are said to be currently undergoing a cash squeeze.

It is now difficult for a bank to pay between N50million and N100million in a single transaction to any customer, individual or corporate.

The banks will rather transfer such huge amounts electronically which can be monitored by appropriate agencies like the EFCC.

Investigation also revealed that the EFCC action is a fall out of the collaboration between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and EFCC to check money influence on the elections.

It was learnt that the scope of collaboration covers measures to stop vote buying.

Apart from monitoring movement of stolen funds kept in some private vaults, the EFCC is focusing on transactions by banks.

A well placed source said: “The campaign for 2019 general elections will be run on tight budgets because of a deliberate policy to limit cash influence and make the process credible.

“The campaign expenses of all parties and contestants are being monitored to make sure that they are in line with statutory limits.

“EFCC detectives have also been deployed in airports, border posts and seaports to checkmate the inflow of illicit funds into the country. Those who want to repatriate looted funds will go through hell this time around.

“There is pressure on the banks to make their transaction records as comprehensive and transparent as possible. There is a special team of EFCC detectives working with some sister agencies conducting 24-hour surveillance on bank transactions.

“Some of these detectives have just acquired new skills on how to track transactions even to suspected corrupt sponsors of parties and candidates.

“Any cash in transit movement by banks through companies or by bullion vans will be scrutinized henceforth to ensure that the process is legitimate to serve innocent customers and not Politically Exposed Persons. All these steps apply to all parties and office holders.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “Our target is also against vote buying. With the measures put in place so far, cash will not be available to parties for sharing at polling units. This is our ultimate goal.

“Politicians can resort to e-transactions to buy votes but we can intercept this process easily.”

On Bureau De Change operators, the source added: “The EFCC has met with them and warned against being used as couriers for illicit funds by politicians.

“At our session with these operators, they admitted that 70 per cent of them are unregistered. They alleged that most of these illegal BDCs were used during the 2015 poll. For instance, out of about 1,000 BDC operators in Abuja alone, less than 30 per cent are legally licensed.

“We are going to discuss with the CBN on how to deal with these illegal BDCs in accordance with the laws of the land.”

A top bank official said: “We are really having less cash in banks now because the CBN is encouraging e-transactions.  And with electronic banking, transactions by parties, politicians, agents and sponsors can be monitored.

“When we find out, it appears the cash squeeze might be between December and till after the general elections in 2019.”

When contacted, the Acting Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Tony Orilade said: “We have started monitoring campaign funds and putting measures in place to check vote buying.

“We have our men, who have undergone special training, in charge of surveillance of banks for suspicious transactions. So, movement of funds is strictly being monitored.

“We have met with officials of Bureau De Change. Their lamentation is that most of the operators are illegal. We demanded that they should compile the list of registered members. Illegal operators can be shut down by the appropriate government agencies.”

An APC chieftain told The Nation that it is no longer business as usual for the parties mobilizing funds ahead of elections.

He said:”Campaigning for and winning a presidential election in our clime requires a lot of money. Take a large rally for example, it requires a huge amount of money to stage and we will have to stage a number of this as we continue with the campaign we just flagged off.

“Although we are the ruling party, it has not been easy mobilizing funds for the party to spend. But we are forging on largely with the support of individual Nigerians.”

Speaking in a similar vein, a source in  the campaign structure of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, said:  “most of the things you see some of us doing, we are doing with personal finance and unsolicited supports we get from friends and well-wishers. We are still waiting for the party and the candidate to come forward with needed funds.”

The cash crunch is said to be slowing down the campaign activities of the parties.

Consequently, supporters of the PDP candidate across the country are urging the handlers of his campaign to focus more on small public events and door to door drives across the country until the problem of cash drought can be resolved.

One source said:”We have been advised to plan the big rallies for the later part of the campaigns. Given the reality on ground as we speak, we may be focusing more on the less elaborate electioneering drives that are equally very effective but less expensive. Don’t forget that the PDP has been out of government for nearly four years and we have fewer numbers of governors than we had in 2015.

“The current administration too is intentionally stiffening the noose around our neck by threatening anybody who is willing to support the PDP financially with EFCC and frivolous allegations. This has made it very difficult for our party to receive the usual election time financial support we enjoyed in the past. But I can assure you that all these will not save the APC from defeat.”

It was also gathered that some Atiku support groups may resort to launching a nationwide campaign to invite donors to make financial contributions.

Bala Halilu, convener of the Atikulated Nigeria Movement (ANM), said it is not proper for anybody to expect the candidate to solely fund the election.

“If they say there is cash crunch, then it means PDP chieftains didn’t keep money away as being alleged. We truly need fun to push the campaign,” he said.

“On our own as support groups, we are seeking permission to approach the general public as regards funding. This is important because the party may not be able to raise the needed fund and we want to win this election for Nigerians. So, Nigerians must be allowed to invest into the process by helping to raise the fund we will be needing to stop the APC from continuing in office beyond 2019,” he said.

For APC, the presidential campaign committee is yet to make funds available for any major electioneering effort.

“Most of the activities you see been done across the country to propagate the re-election bid of Mr. President are being done through private initiatives,” a source said.

“It is either the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) doing it or individual state chapters, especially in the southern part of the country, taking the initiative to do the needful. Talks are currently on about how to fund the campaigns better. But I can tell you that it is not true that the presidency or the APC has a huge war-chest in place to prosecute this election.

“This is a season when gift items and branded campaign materials are usually in the surplus. But look around you and you will agree with me that something is unusual in the way the big parties are carrying on with their campaigns this time around.

“Visit the campaign secretariats across the state and you will not see the usual hordes of rams and chickens associated with yuletide in an election year.

“Even party leaders like me  are wondering why we didn’t get the usual yuletide hampers and envelopes now that  electioneering campaigns are ongoing. But what we hear is that money is yet to be released for the coordinators to use. That is strange as we are barely two months to the election proper. If they are yet to fund the campaigns now, when will that be done? Or is it true that funds are not easily sourced as being alleged? This is unusual,” a chieftain of the PDP in Ogun State said.
