  • PDP wins Oyo bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adebo Ogundoyin, as the winner of the bye-election to fill the vacant seat of Ibarapa East State constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The seat became vacant following the demise of the late Speaker of the House, Michael Adeyemo, who represented the constituency until his death on April 27, 2018.

According to Mutiu Agboke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, seven political parties were cleared to participate in the Ibarapa State Constituency bye- election. The parties are Accord Party, Peoples Democratic Party, All Progressives Congress and Fresh Democratic Party, Hope Democratic Party, Nigerian Peoples Congress and Mega Party of Nigeria.

Ogundoyin polled a total of 6277 votes to beat the candidate of the APC, Kunle Adeyemo, who polled 4619 votes. Accord Party scored 2859 in the election.

Adeyemo is the younger brother of the late speaker.

Ogundoyin, 31, won six wards in Eruwa while Adeyemo won in the four wards in Lanlate. The Accord Party did not win in any ward.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) described the election as peaceful.

A tweet by INEC reads: “The exercise has been adjudged peaceful as there was no reported cases of any violence recorded from any quarter during the exercise.”

The commission shared photos of its officials and commissioners who monitored the election. They include the National Commissioner representing Oyo, Osun and Ekiti States, Prince Adedeji Soyebi, and the host REC, Mutiu Agboke and REC Edo State.

Announcing the result, the  returning officer,  Dr Ayodeji Omole of the  University of Ibadan, said Ogundoyin polled 6,277 votes to defeat Mr Olukunle Adeyemo of the All Progressives  Party (APC), who came  second with 4,619 votes.

Omole said Adebodun Adepoju of  Accord Party scored 2,859 votes while  Rasheedat Oyewumi of Fresh  Democratic Party garnered  33 votes.

Others were Adekemi Raheem of Hope Democratic Party,  14 votes;  Grace Olarinde of  Nigerian Peoples Congress,  60 votes   and Matins Adeyemo of Mega Party of Nigeria,  9  votes.

He stated that 14,332 voters were accredited and voted out of  the 44,077 registered.

“ Total votes cast are 14,179 while valid votes are 13,871 and 308 votes were rejected,’’ he said.

He declared Ogundoyin as the winner  “ having scored the highest votes as stipulated in the electoral law.”

The by-election that was held in 140 polling units in all of the 10 wards across the constituency was necessitated by  the death of Michael Adeyemo, the occupant of the seat in the State House of Assembly, on April 27.

Mr Adedeji Soyebi, the National  Electoral Commissioner for Oyo, Osun and Ekiti, said the election was successful and  commended  the people of the constituency for conducting themselves peacefully.

“  We had  little issue with card readers unlike previous elections because we used enhanced smart card readers now, ” Soyebi said.

He also commended security personnel deployed to the area for their efforts in ensuring a  peaceful and violence-free exercise.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN),  who monitored the  election in Eruwa and Lanlate, reports that there was heavy presence of security operatives led by Mr Abiodun Odude, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police.

Polling officials and election materials had arrived early in all polling units while accreditation and voting started on schedule in  all the polling units visited.

Only the three agents of Accord, APC and PDP were present at  polling units  visited in Lanlate and Eruwa, although seven political parties participated in the exercise.

The turnout of voters, however, was low in  Ward 6, polling units 001 – 005, Sango area, LA Primary school , Ward 05, polling units 001-006 as well as  other polling units visited.

Mr Hamza Adamu, the presiding officer  in Ward 09, polling unit 002, Lanlate, said the exercise  was peaceful and hitch-free.

Mrs Abigael Folorunsho, the PDP agent at Ward 05, unit 002, Eruwa, Mrs Abigael Folorusho, attributed the low turnout to the perceived likelihood  of  violence as being speculated.

Folorunsho, however, commended INEC for providing a  level playing ground for all participating political parties.(NAN)

  • APC, PDP in verbal war over Not-too-young-to-run law

The Not-too-young-to-run bill that has just been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked a fresh row between the ruling All Progressives  Congress (APC) and the  opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The opposition party yesterday faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s joke that  youths should not contest next year’s presidential election with him, but wait till 2023.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Mr.Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement in Abuja accused Buhari and the APC of  frustrating the active participation of youths and women in active politics and governance.

He said the President’s statement underscored APC’s policy of not allowing young people aspire to top positions in the country.

But the APC, in a swift reaction by its chief spokesman, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the PDP should stop playing divisive politics over the sponsorship of the bill.

PDP’s statement had said: “It is unimaginable that a President can sign a law and immediately seek to suspend it.

“President Buhari’s attempt to talk down on and intimidate the youths from contesting against him in 2019 shows that he is not in support of the Not Too Young To Run law and only assented to it because he had no other option under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“We therefore urge Nigerians to be alert and wary of booby traps as well as land mines that the APC and the Presidency will set on the way to scuttle the quest for our youths to fully participate and aspire in our democratic process.”

Also reacting to the President’s message, the National Youth Leader of the PDP, Mr. Sunday Ude-Okoye, said the  party would continue to champion the cause of young persons in the country.

Ude-Okoye told reporters in Abuja that the party appointed many young persons into sensitive positions during its 16-year reign.

Stop playing divisive politics, APC warns PDP

APC’s spokesman Abdullahi, however, said the signing of the bill into law is  “indeed another promise kept by the President during his 2018 Democracy Day address and in our 2015 APC election manifesto in which we promised to provide the opportunities for youths to realise, harness, and develop their full potential and to facilitate the emergence of a new generation of citizens committed to the sustenance of good governance and service to the people and the country.”

He hailed Senate President  Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker  Yakubu Dogara under whose leadership the Bill was passed in the National Assembly .

He said the massive support the Bill received, particularly from APC members in the National Assembly,  “speaks volume of the progressive ideals the party continues to identify with and champion, irrespective of partisan considerations and interests.

“This is indeed a major milestone in advocacy efforts to ensure increased participation and inclusion of marginalised groups, in this case the youth in Nigerian politics.

“The youth comprise roughly half of the Nigerian population. It is only right that they take their rightful place within party leadership structures and elective positions at all levels.

“We are confident that the new law will inspire a new thinking among many Nigerian youths pertaining to their roles in elections and politics.

“Youths should not be used as disruptive elements, thugs and social media mobs. It is possible for young people to lead politically and occupy elective positions.”

  • Buhari has become unpopular – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Thursday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement on Tuesday that Nigerian should vote for candidates of their choice in the 2019 general elections, was an indication that the President has admitted his loss of popularity among Nigerian voters.

The PDP noted that the President made the declaration after he must have thoroughly assessed his diminished popularity among Nigerians due to his poor performance in the last three years.

A statement issued on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said although Nigerians on their own, have since reached a consensus not to support the President’s re-election bid, it is good that the President himself has admitted this fact.

The statement said: “President Buhari has seen the flow of our nation’s political tides and the PDP urges him to show statesmanship by reining-in his cronies to shed their desperation and lust for power, which will, in any case, be firmly resisted by Nigerians.

“The PDP also charges the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly the blood relatives of President Buhari in INEC, as well as security agencies to note the determination of Nigerians, their desire for another President, come 2019 and as such desist from any act that will pitch them against the people.

“It is imperative to note that the APC is already stuck with an unpopular candidate and PDP remains open as the only credible democratic platform for all Nigerians across board to rally and produce that truly Nigerian President of their choice.

“The PDP therefore urges all democrats, in all political formations and alignments across the country to come together on the repositioned PDP to actualize the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians for a President that genuinely cares and truly have the capacity and competence to restore our nation to the path of good governance, peace, national cohesion, equity and economic prosperity.”

  • Osinbajo lauds Dangote over 150 vehicle donation to Police

The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof.  Yemi Osinbajo has praised the Chairman of Aliko Dangote Foundation over the donation of 150 operational vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force.

The Vice President said the vehicles donated would help combat the spate of crime in the country.

Osinbajo while expressing  Federal Government’s appreciation to Dangote described him as a rare entrepreneur who has done so much to grow the economy of Nigeria.

He said the Government needs people like Aliko to join hands with it to grow the economy and also provide jobs for the Youth.

He said: “There have been a lot of talks on private-public partnership, but as we can see Alhaji Dangote is walking the talk.

“Government’s role is to provide the enabling environment while the private sector should take advantage of the opportunities that abounds in the country to grow and develop the economy.

“The donation of 150 cars to the Nigerian Police Force is laudable and we thank Aliko Dangote Foundation for this rare gesture, that is characteristic of the person of Aliko Dangote.

“He has shown over the years to be an entrepreneur with a difference, a man that gives so much to the poor”

Describing the donation as the single largest donation of cars by any private individual in the country, Osibanjo urged other Nigerians to join hands with the Federal Government to effectively secure the country as well as develop the economy.

Speaking during the formal handover, the Chairman of the Foundation,  Aliko Dangote explained that the donation was imperative considering how essential security was to the economy.

He also said the donation was aimed at strengthening the Nigeria Police.

He said: “We are gathered here today to mark the formal handover of a total number of 150 GAC saloon cars to the Nigeria Police Force in order to help boost their operational efficiency.

“I am told that today marks the single biggest number of operational vehicles ever donated to the law enforcement agency by a private organisation.

“Considering the challenges government faces in meeting the entire needs of the populace for necessities like health, education and security, various Public Private Partnerships (PPP) initiatives have been developed.”

The Foundation, according to Dangote has been active in the four areas of health, education, economic empowerment and disaster relief, adding that it has  expended upwards to N10 billion annually.

While calling on other corporate organizations to rise up to the challenge of helping the security agencies in the country, Dangote stated that his Foundation made a N50 million donation to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, and built the Police Intelligence Hostel Complex in Kwara State, all of which are part of the collaborations by the Foundation.

“Today, we are deepening our intervention in security with the donation of these 150 fully kitted operational vehicles to the Police Force. These vehicles will support the Nigeria Police Force in surveillance, crime prevention and promote law and order.”

Dangote promised that his foundation may consider donating another batch of vehicles to the Force depending on how well the ones donated are maintained.

Also commenting, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim  Idris promised that the cars will be well utilized for the purpose for which they were donated.

He urged Nigerians to go about their business lawfully, noting that the Police Force is well equipped more than ever before to fight crime across the country.

He also assured that the Police Force will not disappoint Nigerians in the provision of adequate security across the country.

  • Breaking: Dino Melaye ‘defects’ to PDP

There was drama on Wednesday in the Senate as the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, announced his tactical defection from All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

APC and PDP senators appeared to have been caught unawares by Melaye’s announcement.

Although Melaye did not mention ‘defection’, he requested Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to quickly assign him a seat on the side of the minority PDP.

The embattled Kogi West senator who appeared in Senate chamber clutching a walking stick and wearing neck brace claimed that he was no longer comfortable sitting on the side of APC senators.

Melaye said, “Mr. President I want to seek your indulgence, you will call in the sergeant-at-arms to look for a comfortable sit for me on the other side of the divide.”

“Mr. President, because of the trauma I went through and I am still going through, I want to seek your indulgence that you will call on the sergeant-at-arm to look for a comfortable seat for me on this side (pointing at PDP row) of the divide because I am no longer comfortable sitting here.

“So I want to ask Mr. President that you mandate the sergeant-at-arms tomorrow to look for a seat for me on this other divide of the chamber. And that before you do that today, through help of my walking stick, I will take a comfortable seat close to Papa General Senator David Mark, pending when you get me a comfortable seat on this side.

“I want to thank you very much and say no retreat, no surrender.”

Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan and Chief Whip, Olusola Adeyeye struggled to ensure that Melaye did not cross the Isle to the PDP side.

Lawan went the extra mile to even offer his seat to Melaye if that would make him comfortable.

Adeyeye said  allowing Melaye to move to the PDP side the way the Kogi Senator wanted it would plant disorder in the chamber.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said that what Melaye was looking for was welfare and comfort.

Ekweremadu who read relevant sections of the constitution noted that Melaye should be allowed to sit where he would be comfortable as doing otherwise would not be in his interest.

Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, cited privileges of senators and declared that PDP senators were not complaing.

He welcomed Melaye to the PDP side and assured him of his absolute comfort.

Other PDP senators who joined the fray rushed to the APC side to escort Melaye to their side.

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki in his ruling said, “As he said, we all thank God for his life. Let me on his behalf and on behalf of all of us thank those that gave all the supports during the difficult times and travails he has been through.

“We as members of the National Assembly have always shown that whatever happens to one happens to all.

“I appreciate you all for all the supports and we would continue to speak with one voice and be there for each other.

“The last point I just want to comment, Senator Dino, you made a request which I can’t see the reasons why you now want to sit elsewhere.

“Is it due to your injury or what? As far as I am concerned Senator Dino, I still know you with that seat. I take note of your request and I take note of your comments.”

Melaye also recounted his ordeal in the hand of the police while he was detained over alleged gun running.

He claimed that the police attempted to kill him “through the application of a chemical substance and secondly by injection.”

“They actually came with an injection to inject me but God intervened. And to Him alone be the glory forever and ever,” he said.

Melaye said, “Mr. President, my very respected colleagues, I am in your midst today alive by the grace of God. I am a manifestation of the declaration that there is God.

“I want to start by appreciating God, the Supreme controller of the universe for manifesting that though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil.

“I want to specially acknowledge the Nigerian Senate under the capable leadership of the irremovable President of the Nigerian Senate. I want to thank you for your love, concern for speaking for me and for defending the cause of democracy.

“My President, my respected colleagues, I doff my hat.

“Mr. President, I will not also conclude my appreciation without appreciating the indefatigable and indomitable Speaker of the House of Representatives and indeed the House of Representatives members. I thank them immensely and sincerely for showing that an injury to one is an injury to all.

“I particularly thank my constituents, men of honour of Kogi West Senatorial District not only for showing love, praying for me, but for defending my mandate that when I couldn’t fight for myself, when I couldn’t speak for myself, they fought for me, they spoke for me and they stood for me, especially during the failed recall exercise orchestrated by the Governor of Kogi State.

“I thank them immensely and I appreciate them and I pray the almighty God will continue to protect everyone from that senatorial district.

“I indeed I thank Kogites and specially also appreciate the Peoples Democratic Party for making statements during my recall exercise and asking everyone to stay back. Politics have been shown not to be individualistic but to be about issues and purpose.

“So, to the National Chairman of PDP, and indeed the Executive of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi State, I salute you! I salute you!! I salute you!!!

“I want to thank Nigerians in general for showing me uncommon love, for showing me that they can stand by the truth at all times. I think Nigerians! I thank Nigerians!! I thank Nigerians!!! And I cannot stop thanking Nigerians.

“When I went through the social media, when I saw the kind of support I got from Nigerians, then I am propelled, encouraged to continue to do only those things that will promote the integrity and prosperity of this country.

“I want to say I am alive because God defended me. But I want to say that the Nigerian police attempted to kill me twice. One, through the application of a chemical substance and the second time through injection.

“They actually came with an injection to inject me but God intervened. And to Him alone be the glory forever and ever.

“And that is why I quote this part of the Holy Book that “He who sits in the sacred place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the almighty.

“I thank the Almighty God for being alive and I want to promise Nigerians that because of the love I have seen, I will not derail. I will stand by the truth. No amount of intimidation, harassment, arrest, name-calling, blackmail planted will detract my attention from championing this cause.

“The battle to salvage this country from financial scavengers and economic cankerworm is a battle of no retreat, no surrender.

“We must salvage this country together. We have no other country to call our own but this country. So, I want to say as I get better, my voice gets better, it will become better. And I shall not cease to continue to ask questions where necessary.

“Mr. President, once again, I thank you. I thank you for your show of love, show of comradeship, I thank you for everything you have done and say in your own life and that of my colleagues, afflictions shall not arise the second time.

“But I want to conclude that by saying that we must not allow this to discourage us or get us disenchanted. We must be emboldened to ask questions.

“The Executive cannot cow the legislature. We must be bold at all times and speak truth. Like I have always said, ‘if you speak the truth, you die; If you lie, you die. It is better to speak the truth and die,” Melaye stated.

Akpabio’s attempt to ask Saraki to compel Senator Hope Uzodinma (Imo West) to move to APC side failed.

Akpabio said that Uzodinma who participated actively in APC congresses should move to APC.

    Saraki overruled him.

Insiders said that Melaye’s defection to PDP might have opened the floodgate of defections in the Senate.

  • Buhari’s address hollow, says PDP

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the Democracy Day address by President Muhammadu Buhari as uninspiring and hollow.

The President also failed to address issues agitating the minds of Nigerians, a statement yesterday by PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan said.

According to the opposition party, the address was the worst since Buhari took office in 2015.

It added that it was garnished with a list of phantom projects and executive regurgitations, designed by his handlers to sway Nigerians and divert attention from the many failures of the administration.

The statement said: “The few Nigerians who bordered to listen to the address were miffed that in the most insensitive manner, Mr. President failed to show the littlest empathy to millions of citizens groaning under the worst form of poverty, starvation and economic hardship occasioned by his misrule.”

The party observed that the President’s aloofness to the plight of Nigerians was manifest in all the lines of the speech.

The PDP said: “In fact, no line in the supposed Democracy Day address had any inclination towards justice for victims of abuse of human rights, reported executive high-handedness, illegal arrests and detentions, extra-judicial executions as well as victims of killings and daily bloodletting in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, Kaduna, Plateau, Borno, Kogi, Yobe and other parts of the country, by insurgents and marauders.

“Mr. President, on Democracy Day, had no words of assurance on the unrelenting violation of our constitution; assault on the National Assembly and erosion of personal freedom of citizens.”

The PDP similarly faulted the president address for failing to make any commitment towards the conduct of free, fair and credible general elections in 2019. It added that Buhari was apparently overwhelmed by the avalanche of his public rejection ahead of the polls.

  • No basis to compare APC with PDP, says Osinbajo

There is no basis to compare the administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the previous ones ran by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said yesterday.

He said comparing APC’s three years with the PDP’s 16 years in power meant that the APC is doing well.

He spoke during the 2018 Democracy Day Dinner / Gala Night at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

Osinbajo said: “We are thankful to God for the way He has worked with us in the past three years and ensured that we recorded great successes.

“I was reminding somebody two months ago that we are not yet three years old and we are being compared with some of our friends who are here and have been in government for 16 years.

“To compare themselves to us, even when we were two years, shows that we must be doing very well.” he stated

The dinner was also used as reception for the Team Nigeria that participated in the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The presentation of the Super Eagles Team to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, earlier scheduled for the same ceremony, was shifted till today before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

At the dinner were National Assembly leaders, former Chiefs of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and Gen. Oladipo Diya.

Also in attendance were National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) John Odigie-Oyegun, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha and members of the diplomatic corps.

  • Adeyeye’s defection to APC won’t affect PDP’s fortune – Fayose

Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti says the defection of former Minister of State for Works, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye from the PDP to APC will not affect the party’s fortune.

The governor made the disclosure in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, Mr Lere Olayinka in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.

Fayose said that Adeyeye’s defection to the All Progressives Congress had merely confirmed his earlier position that he was never a loyal and committed member of the People’s democratic Party.

Read Also:Fayose is very abusive, lacks decorum, says Oyegun

According to him, I am not bothered by the action taken by the former aspirant in the just concluded PDP governorship primary election in the state.

“His move to APC will not in any way affect us. This is because majority of those he thought were behind him did not defect with him.

“In fact, one of his two party agents for the last primary is still with us in PDP and you know what that means.

“If somebody is your party agent and could not go with you to another party it tells a lot and even as he is moving from PDP, many others from APC are coming to us, so we have nothing to lose with his defection,” he said.

The governor said that he held no grudge against him because he had the right to move from one political party to the other adding that he wished him well in his new party.

“While he was the PDP national spokesman, he had spoken terrible things against the APC and he has now gone to join the same party,” Fayose said.
