Former Ondo guber candidate Jegede’s loyalists dump PDP for ADC

    • …As Akinwunmi joins House of Rep race

Scores of supporters and loyalists of former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a significant political watershed in the state.

The loyalists, led by Balarabe Abiodun Akinwunmi, a known associate of Jegede, formally announced their defection at the weekend in Akure, aligning with the Atiku Abubakar led coalition-backed ADC.

Jegede, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice under ex-Governor Olusegun Mimiko, was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2016 and 2020 elections, where he contested against the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

Speaking during the event, Akinwunmi attributed their decision to the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP at both the state and national levels, saying the move was based on principle rather than political convenience.

“Today, I, Balarabe Abiodun Akinwunmi, have chosen to stand with the people and, by the grace of God, I have joined the ADC. From today, we shall mobilise house-to-house, street-to-street, unit-to-unit, and ward-by-ward to demonstrate our strength.

“We will show them on election day, the power of the people, and I believe God is with us, and we shall triumph,” he said.

Akinwunmi, who is aspiring to represent Akure North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also pledged continued engagement with the grassroots and assured supporters of his commitment to their welfare.

He expressed confidence that the ADC would provide credible leadership and help rescue the state and the country from what he described as the grip of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Welcoming the defectors at the party’s Ijomu/Obanla Council Ward, the ADC Chairman Mukaila Ajiboye commended Akinwunmi and his supporters for their bold and courageous decision to join the ADC.

Ajiboye said the defection is a blooster and would also strengthen the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He, however, promised that the defectors would be fully integrated and treated equally within the party structure.

Edo PDP faction hails judgement nullifying party’s convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State loyal to the faction of Minister of the Federal Capital territory, Nyesom Wike has hailed last Friday’s Federal High Court judgment which nullified the National Convention of the party held in Ibadan.

Factional chairman of the party, Barr. Nosakhare Ogieva-Okunbor, in a statement, said the judgment marked a new dawn for unity and progress of the party.

Barr. Ogieva-Okunbor urged party loyalists to support Alhaji Abdulraman Mohammed as National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary of the party.

According to him, “This ruling provides much needed clarity and judicial endorsement, reinforcing the principles of internal order, constitutional due process, and unity within our great party. It represents a timely and decisive intervention that strengthens our foundation, restores confidence among members and enhances our collective capacity to rebuild and reposition for future victories.

“We extend our warm congratulations to Alhaji Abdulraman Mohammed on this well-deserved affirmation of his leadership. His steady hand, commitment to broad-based reconciliation, and focused efforts to rebuild party structures nationwide have earned him the trust and respect of members across all zones. Similarly, the confirmation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary solidifies the administrative framework necessary for effective coordination and renewed organisational vigour.

“At this pivotal moment, we call on all members, supporters, and stakeholders of the PDP to unite behind the affirmed National Caretaker Committee. Unity of purpose is indispensable to our mission of repositioning the party, strengthening internal democracy, and restoring our widespread national appeal.

“This judgment opens a new chapter of collective renewal. We urge every committed member to embrace this opportunity, uphold party discipline, and work collaboratively for the greater good of the PDP.”

PDP State chairmen back Turaki-led faction

The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee(NWC) of the party elected at the National convention in November.

In a statement in Abuja, the Forum drawn from 30 States of the Federation, said despite the judgement of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, the Turaki led Executive remains the legal leadership of the party, pointing out that the judgement was only one of several distractions the party is facing and will soon overcome.

The statement was signed by the

Chairman of Forum of PDP State Chairmen &

Chairman, PDP in  Edo State, Tony Aziegbemi and the Secretary of the Forum and Chairman of Kaduna State Chairman, Chief Edward Masha

The statement reads: “The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), comprising the Chairmen of the Party in 30 States of the Federation, has carefully reviewed the judgment delivered today by the Federal High Court, Ibadan, as well as the official position of our great Party as articulated by the National Chairman, His Excellency, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

“We wish to unequivocally express our total solidarity and unflinching support for the National Chairman and the entire National Working Committee (NWC) as constituted by the Ibadan National Convention.

“The Forum notes with concern that the judgment in question declined the relief of mandamus sought by the Party, while proceeding to grant reliefs that were neither prayed for nor canvassed by any of the parties before the court.

“We further note that the said judgment stands in material conflict with subsisting judgments and orders of courts of coordinate jurisdiction on the same subject matter.

“It is therefore reassuring that the Party has already exercised its constitutional right of appeal and filed the appropriate motions for stay of execution, in line with established legal principles and democratic norms.

“We align fully with the position of the National Working Committee under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) that this judgment represents only one step in an ongoing judicial process, especially as the substantive issues are already before the Court of Appeal for determination.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Forum of PDP State Chairmen affirms that the National Working Committee produced by the Ibadan Convention remains the lawful, recognised, and operational leadership of our Party, and continues to enjoy the confidence and loyalty of PDP structures across the 30 states of the Federation.

“We urge all party members, supporters, and stakeholders nationwide to remain calm, focused, and united. There is no vacuum in the leadership of our Party, and there is absolutely no cause for panic.

“The PDP has weathered difficult moments in the past and has always emerged stronger. This moment is no exception. What we are witnessing is merely one of the judicial turns in our democratic journey — not the destination itself.

“The Forum remains fully committed to the REBIRTH and rebuilding of the Peoples Democratic Party, and we reaffirm our collective resolve to strengthen party unity, deepen internal democracy, and reposition the PDP as the credible alternative capable of rescuing Nigeria.

“As we have always known, facts may be distorted, but truth is constant- and it will surely prevail. We stand firmly with the National Chairman, the National Working Committee, and the millions of Nigerians who continue to believe in the ideals of our great Party”.

PDP factions dig in as court nullifies Ibadan convention

    • We remain in charge of party, Turaki faction boasts

    • It’s victory for democracy – Wike-Anyanwu wing

The nullification of the  November 2025 Ibadan national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the  Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan yesterday seems to have set the stage for a fresh round of acrimony in the party.

Not only did Justice Uche Agomoh nullify  the convention,he also barred Taminu Turaki (SAN) and others who emerged as National Working Committee (NWC) members at the convention from parading themselves as national officers of the PDP.

The court similarly declared   the Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed  and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the only recognised NWC of the PDP pending the conduct of a valid National Convention.

Turaki and his faction of the party immediately rejected the verdict  and said they were proceeding on appeal

Turaki claimed that the court turned itself into a charitable organisation by granting relief not sought by the other faction.

But the Abdulrahman Mohammed faction hailed the judgement as  victory for democracy and a reaffirmation of the long-standing position that legitimacy can only be derived from strict compliance with the constitution of the party, extant laws, and valid court orders as against seeking self-help through impersonation or unlawful assertions of authority.

The Turaki faction had filed suit Number FHC/IB/CS/121/2025,to  seek recognition of the convention held in Ibadan on November 15, 2025, and validation of the NWC that emerged at the convention

However, Justice Agomoh, held that the convention was conducted in flagrant disobedience of two judgments of the same court, adding that returning to seek judicial approval for actions taken in defiance of court orders was an exercise in futility.

He  described the suit as a brazen attempt by the  applicants  to legitimize illegalities done in violation of subsisting court orders.

He declared that  he would not allow that or sit on appeal over those judgments.

Consequently, he set aside all decisions taken at the convention.

He said:”I hold that the caretaker committee is the only lawful governing body of PDP that INEC should recognize and relate with.

“This suit is a brazen attempt of the applicant  to legitimize its illegalities done in violation of subsisting court orders. I cannot allow that or sit on appeal over those judgments.

“The application fails and is dismissed.”

Reacting to the judgment, counsel to the PDP Caretaker Committee, Chief Ferdinand Oshioke Orbih, (SAN) called it a boost for Nigeria’s democracy.

He said the judgment affirmed that the rule of law must prevail over political expediency, stressing that all actions and structures arising from the convention had been completely nullified.

Orbih added that the court’s decision underscored the inevitability of the caretaker committee taking charge of the party’s affairs until a valid convention is conducted in line with the law.

Turaki faction: No cause for alarm; we remain in charge of PDP

National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki faction, Comrade Ini Ememobong insisted that they remain the only legal leadership of the party despite the judgement.

He said the faction had  briefed its lawyers on the development  and would await the decision of the appellate court.

It asked its supporters to remain resolute in the efforts  to rebuild the PDP.

His words: “We are aware of the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, delivered this morning, which essentially declined to grant the order of mandamus sought on the ground that doing so would, in the court’s view, amount to sitting on appeal over judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

“We have accordingly briefed our lawyers to immediately file an appeal and to take all further legal steps necessary to advance our arguments and firmly protect our position on this matter.

“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken, as we await the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts.

“We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The REBIRTH movement remains firmly on course.”

Courts are not charitable institutions, should not grant reliefs not sought by litigants, says Turaki

Turaki said separately yesterday that the  Federal High Court that adjudicated on the case turned itself into a charitable organisation by granting relief not sought in by the other faction.

He told reporters in Abuja that courts are not charitable organisations and are not supposed to   grant reliefs not sought and when such reliefs are sought, must be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

He said :”For clarity, we approached the court seeking an order of mandamus to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the National Convention and to facilitate official party communications with the Commission.

“In the course of the proceedings, some former members of our party, who had either been expelled or had resigned, applied to be joined in the matter and were so joined by order of the court. They filed processes urging the court not to grant our prayers.

“However, it is important to note, respectfully, that the court went beyond the reliefs sought and granted orders that were neither prayed for nor canvassed by any of the parties before it.

“More importantly, the judgment is materially inconsistent with existing orders and previous judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction, all of which are already subjects of appeal before the Court of Appeal.

“Consequently, we have filed a notice of appeal as well as a motion for stay of execution of the judgment, and we are determined to pursue this matter diligently and logically, in accordance with the law.

“For the benefit of members of the press, this is our notice of appeal. And this is our application for stay of execution of the same judgment delivered this morning (displaying the documents). As you can see, we have already appealed and applied for a stay.

“Until that application is heard and determined one way or the other, the judgment is in abeyance.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this judgment is only one among several decisions of the Federal High Court on this same subject matter. The core issues arising from them are already before the Court of Appeal. In that sense, this particular judgment is, technically speaking, academic, pending the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate court.

“Let me assure all members of our great party that, notwithstanding this judgment, the National Working Committee produced by the Convention remains legally intact, firmly in place, and fully committed to the ongoing rebirth of the People’s Democratic Party.

“I therefore urge all our members and supporters across the country to remain calm and resolute. There is absolutely no cause for alarm. The rebirth movement is steadily on course.

“This judgment represents nothing more than the navigation of one judicial bend along our journey. The destination remains clear, and as history has consistently shown, it is the final outcome that ultimately matters.”

Responding to questions on pending appeals, Turaki said “there are actually more than two matters pending. There is the judgment of Justice Omotosho, another judgment, and a further judgment delivered by Justice Abdulmalik. In all these cases, the party was sued and we are defending those actions. We appealed against the orders made against the party in those cases.

“However, in the matter decided this morning in Ibadan, we were the ones who approached the court seeking an order of mandamus, as I have explained. Some parties applied to be joined and were joined, but there was no counterclaim and no other prayers before the court. Yet the court went beyond the issues placed before it and granted reliefs that were not claimed.

“It is a fundamental principle of law that courts are not charitable institutions. They do not grant reliefs not sought by litigants. Even when a relief is sought, it must be proved before it can be granted. We have therefore appealed.

“I am concerned that the appeals have not yet been heard? No, I am not concerned as a lawyer. There are established processes that must be completed before an appeal is ripe for hearing. Parties must file their briefs within stipulated timelines, and replies may also be necessary.”

Ibadan FHC judgement in abeyance pending appeal court decision, says PDP BoT

The Board of Trustees of the Tanimu Turaki led PDP said it was shocking that a court that refused to grant an order of mandamus went beyond its boundaries to issue orders that were not prayed for by parties in the case.

Chairman of the BoT and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara said in a statement last night that the judgement of the court was in abeyance pending the determination of the appeal filed by the party.

The statement reads: “The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been made aware of the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, regarding the National Convention of our great Party held on November 15 and 16, 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

“The BoT notes that the judgment is technically of no effect and at best, academic as the central and fundamental issues in the matter are already before the Court of Appeal.

“It is however a matter of concern that the court, in declining the order of mandamus sought by our party on the ground that such would amount to sitting on appeal over the judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction, went beyond the boundaries  to grant reliefs that were not prayed by any of the parties in the case.

“In any case, the BoT notes that our party has already filed an appeal and a Motion for Stay of Execution. This puts the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan in abeyance and retains the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee which was duly elected at the Ibadan Convention legally and firmly on the saddle.

“The BoT as the conscience and second highest Organ of the party assures all members of the PDP, our teeming supporters and indeed the general public that the Turaki-led NWC is securely in place and there is no cause for alarm.

“The Board reaffirms its commitment and support for the Turaki-led NWC in its efforts to stabilize and strengthen the party on the path of victory ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

It’s victory for democracy, says Abdulrahman faction

In its own reaction, the Abdulrahman Mohammed faction commended the judiciary for “once again rising to its constitutional responsibility as the impartial arbiter in political and constitutional disputes.”

Its spokesman, Jungude Haruna Mohammed said the judgement “represents a decisive victory for the rule of law, constitutionalism, and internal party democracy.”

It added: “It reaffirms the long-standing position of the PDP that legitimacy can only be derived from strict compliance with the Constitution of the Party, Extant Laws, and Valid Court Orders as against seeking for Self-Help through impersonation, or unlawful assertions of authority.

“The National Caretaker Working Committee therefore congratulates all its members and supporters for their patience, resilience, and unwavering faith in due process throughout this period, and further call on all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and united as we move forward in the spirit of reconciliation, progress, and renewed commitment to the ideals of our great Party.

“We appeal to all aggrieved members to sheath their swords as this victory belongs to the entire PDP family. Our doors remain open for genuine reconciliation and integration. This will strengthen unity, deepen internal cohesion, and refocus collective efforts toward building a stronger and more formidable PDP.”

    Imo PDP, too

Similar sentiments were expressed by the Imo State chapter of the party.

The Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state , Lancelot Obiaku, said the brains behind the now nullified Ibadan convention “ desecrated the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the country’s constitution.”

He said:”We are upbeat that the judgment will stabilize and strengthen our party, boost confidence, and pave the way for PDP to thrive as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.”

It reaffirmed its confidence in the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led committee and its leaders, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

PDP’s Gbenga Hashim slams ethnic rhetoric, warns against north–south divide

Presidential hopeful of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has condemned what he described as attempts by aides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stoke regional and ethnic divisions, warning that such actions undermine Nigeria’s unity.

Hashim said the renewed push for a North–South narrative by elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is a political distraction aimed at deflecting attention from economic challenges and governance concerns under the Tinubu administration.

Reacting to a statement attributed to the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Hashim described the approach as “reckless” and harmful to Nigeria’s national security interests.

“Dividing Nigeria along regional lines in order to evade accountability for governance failures is dangerous and unacceptable. It amounts to a betrayal of the oath to uphold the unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the PDP chieftain dismissed arguments based on rotational presidency, insisting that Nigerians are more concerned about competence, accountability, and effective governance than symbolic power-sharing arrangements.

“Nigerians are not asking for a Northern or Southern president. They are asking for a competent president, one who can revive the economy, secure lives and property, and unite the country around a shared future of Prosperity,” he stated.

Hashim reminded the APC that both regions have had substantial opportunities to govern Nigeria since 1999, noting that the South has produced presidents for approximately 17 years, while the North has governed for about 10 years within the same democratic period.

“Leadership failure cannot be blamed on geography. Both regions have governed. What matters now is performance, not origin,” he said.

He warned that resurrecting ethnic narratives at a time of deep economic distress, rising insecurity, and social fragmentation only exposes the ruling party’s lack of credible solutions.

“Using ethnicity and region to mask incompetence is not only lazy politics, it is also a direct insult to Nigerians who are struggling to survive,” Hashim added.

Calling on citizens across the country to reject divisive politics, Hashim stressed that the APC would not be able to hide behind regional sentiment in the next election cycle.

“Come 2027, Nigerians will vote for leadership, not tribal loyalty. The era of emotional blackmail is over,” he concluded.

Sen. Gada dumps ADC for PDP

A leading All Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition stalwart in Sokoto state, Sen. Abubakar Gada, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former senator who made announcement at the end of a consultative meeting in Sokoto, said his decision was driven by the need to “reclaim and rebuild” the PDP in the state.

Gada, who represented Sokoto East Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011 under the PDP, joined the ADC in 2025.

”I have played a leading and instrumental role in the conception, promotion, and stabilisation of the ADC coalition movement in Sokoto state.

”I also invested considerable time, energy, and political capital in building what was envisioned as a credible political alternative driven by the collective aspirations of the people.

” I leverage on modern communication tools and social media platforms to expand awareness and participation.

” It is in this spirit I brought the Northwest coalition representative Malam Nasiru El-Rufa’i to Sokoto state to engage with diverse political stakeholders in the state,” Gada said

Gada explained that events have unfolded, prevailing on political realities revealed significant structural and leadership challenges within the coalition.

These, he said, included issues of weak cohesion, absence of strategic clarity, and a noticeable lack of commitment at critical leadership levels.

Gada added that after extensive consultations with political allies, stakeholders and grassroots leaders, and after careful reflection, he decided withdraw from the ADC coalition membership.

” I formally align with the PDP, a platform I consider more structured, credible, and people-oriented for advancing the collective aspirations of Sokoto state.

He pledged a stable and dependable political platform and remain resolute in working collectively toward unity, sustainable development, and shared prosperity.

PDP crisis deepens as ex-spokesman resigns in Ondo

The leadership crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State deepened on Thursday following the resignation of the party’s former Publicity Secretary, Ayo Fadaka.

Fadaka, who formerly served as the spokesman of the opposition party in the state, announced his resignation in a letter submitted to the chairman of Ward 8, Oke Aro, in Akure South Local Government Area and obtained by The Nation, in Akure.

In copies of the letter addressed to the state chairman and the National Vice Chairman (South-West) of the PDP, Fadaka said his decision was not taken lightly but was necessitated by what he described as persistent internal crises threatening the survival of the party.

“I am writing to notify you of my decision to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party forthwith,” he stated.

According to him, the PDP had become a victim of individuals who rose to prominence through the party but later turned against it.

“The PDP is a victim of ill-bred individuals who unfortunately rose to very lofty heights through it and eventually turned around to stab it mercilessly,” he said.

Fadaka further accused some party leaders in the state of lacking integrity and using the party purely for personal gain.

“Another thriving group of rent-seeking and privilege-taking individuals, to whom the party remains a meal ticket, are ever ready, without conscience, to compromise its interests,” he added.

The former spokesman said he had realised that his commitment to the party was no longer sustainable under the prevailing circumstances.

“In view of the above, I have since realised that my seemingly irrevocable commitment to the party can, after all, be revoked. Therefore, my membership in the PDP is hereby terminated. I wish the party well,” he stated.

Fadaka’s resignation is the latest in a series of developments highlighting the deepening internal wrangling within the PDP in the state.

We know those who won’t fly PDP flag in 2027 – Turaki

Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, said the party knows those who will not be allowed to fly its flag as presidential candidate in the 2027 Presidential election.

Turaki also reaffirmed the decision to zone to the presidential ticket of the party to the southern part of the country but was quick to say that “we don’t know who our candidate will be, but we know those who will not be”.

Turaki, who was speaking with newsmen after a meeting with former Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo at his Abuja residence on Tuesday evening, said the former number two citizen reaffirmed his membership of the PDP, saying “we are happy that those who keep the party to success are still with us”.

He said: “We came to introduce the newly elected members of the National Working Committee to him. Those that were elected in our last National Elective Convention that took place in Ibadan.

“Those who came with us also included members of the Board of Trustees and the chairman of the BOT himself. Founding fathers and mothers, members of the National Assembly, state chairmen, former ministers, former governors, former members of the National Assembly, and indeed other major party stakeholders across the country.

“We met with His Excellency and we’ve had a very, very useful discussion with him. We told him the prospects and the challenges we’ve been facing since our election in Ibadan and generously proffered advice and guidance on the way to forward as winning platform for Nigerians.

“But the most important thing for us this evening is the assurance that His Excellency gave us that he is and will continue to remain a member of the PDP and that very soon, he will become more active than he used to be.

“He assured us that should there be anything at any time that requires attention, that we should not hesitate to run to him and he will be up and doing and will be there for us. So, we are happy that our leaders, those who are behind the successes that PDP had achieved in this country, are with us and they are going to remain with us.

“We will continue to tell Nigerians and indeed members of the PDP that your party is the biggest and greatest party in Africa. Your party is on the move again. And very soon, we shall come back to our winning days. Very soon, we will position our party to win all elections that are going to be conducted in this country, beginning with the FCT area council elections, the Ekiti and Osun off-season elections. So I want to assure us that we are on course”.

Responding to questions on the party position regarding the Federal High Court Judgement dismissing the case filed by the immediate past National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Turaki said: “It is a vindication for us in the PDP family.

“We’ve said times and times again that the decision of the Supreme Court is sacrosanct. That our courts have no business meddling into matters that are purely political party matters.

“The judgment of Justice Umar today has vindicated us in PDP that, yes, we are the genuine leaders of PDP, that, yes, our convention was legitimately done, that people cannot just go in one corner and then begin to ascribe to themselves the leadership of a political party. This is not a market association, neither is it an association of shoe-shiners. This is a political party, and there must be discipline”.

On whether former President Jonathan will be contesting the 2027 elections, he said: “You see, like I’ve always said, we in PDP have taken a decision to zone our presidential ticket to southern part of this country.
