  • Akwa Ibom PDP gives automatic ticket to Emmanuel

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State may have shut out other intended aspirants in the party from contesting the 2019 governorship election.

The development followed the automatic ticket by the party to Governor Udom Emmanuel.

State publicity secretary of the party, Comrade Iniobong Ememobong, disclosed this at the weekend while fielding questions from members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council.

“Apart from the governor, whom we have already given automatic ticket, every aspirant from the House of Assembly to the National Assembly must follow the due process,” the party’s spokesman said.

Ememobong also debunked the allegation that the State PDP Chairman, Obong Paul Ekpo, was bribed with N2 million to endorse former Commissioner for Information Aniekan Umanah for the Abak Federal Constituency seat at a public forum in Abak.

Angry youths under the aegis of the Abak Federal Constituency Assembly (AFCA), led by Comrade Emayak Williams, worried by the allegation had impressed it on the party Chairman “to clear his name of the allegation”, pointing out that “so far, we have about five persons who have indicated interest for the post including Umanah”.

But the party scribe dismissed the allegation, explaining that “Aniekan Umanah was the Chairman of the Planning Committee of the event held at Abak to honour the governor and the wife”, explaining that Ekop only lifted his hand after organising a successful ceremony”.

Emmanuel, he stressed, remains the only person with automatic ticket to again fly the party’s flag in 2019, adding that the party arrived at such decision in view of the governor’s achievements in the last three years.

According to him,  Emmanuel has acquitted himself creditably well with the mandate entrusted in his care since 2015, noting that he has substantially delivered on the five-point agenda of his administration.

He added that the foundation of industrialisation laid by the administration would ensure the largely civil service state becomes an industrialised economy soon.

Besides, Ememobong explained that under the current administration, more jobs have been created for the youths through agricultural interventions, interest-free loans for market unions, free basic education for the young ones, scholarships for higher education students and N600million earmarks every year as WAEC fees for final year secondary schools’ pupils.

He warned against unfounded rumour that has the capacity to overheat the polity ahead of the polls.

  • PDP should repent of its sins, says Bafarawa

•Why Nigerians should return us to power in 2019- Secondus

Former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, wants members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to intensify prayers and repent of their sins.

“It is the sins that the PDP members committed that God is punishing them for,” Bafarawa said yesterday at the PDP Northwest zonal rally in Katsina.

“Almighty Allah does not make mistakes and that was the reason why when the PDP offended him, he snatched the power and handed it to APC,’’ he said.

Also addressing the rally, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus said Nigerians should return  PDP back to power next year as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in his opinion, has failed the generality of Nigerians.

The APC, according to him, has no business returning to power.

The National Women leader of the party, Hajia Maria Umar Waziri said the turnout of party supporters despite the fact that the President is spending the weekend in his Daura hometown is a clear indication that the party is waxing stronger in the state despite APC’s claim of a one party state

She said, “If we lose the next election here, it is pure rigging; we must win the next election.’’

Immediate past Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema rejected the blame game and accusations of corruption levelled against him by the incumbent governor, Aminu Bello Masari

He said: “Democracy is a matter of choices; you have chosen a party before. Now it’s our turn to be chosen in the coming elections. I left behind N14.5b in the account but they said it is false, I improved education and infrastructure, they discredited it saying I borrowed money and am challenging anybody with proof to come forward with evidence.’’

In his remarks, former governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, advised PDP members to close ranks and work towards the success of the party in 2019.

Aliyu said without unity, the PDP would not return to  the power.

  • PDP to Nigerians: Don’t re-elect Buhari in 2019

The People Democratic Party (PDP) has warned Nigerians the nation would face dire consequences if President Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected in 2019.

The National Chairman of the Party, Prince Uche Secondus, who stated this during the North West Zonal rally of the party held in Katsina on Saturday, maintained that Nigeria cannot endure another difficult four years under Buhari

Also speaking at the rally, a PDP presidential aspirant, Sule lamido, said the President has not performed creditably well in his first term.

He said: ‘’Buhari’s destruction of the economy is unprecedented. His government sees every one as corrupt except him. What is it that is not happening here in Nigeria under Buhari, we must join hands and root him out come 2019? if he returns, Nigeria will be the worst for it.”

The National Women leader of the party, Hajia Maria Umar Waziri, said the turnout of party supporters despite the fact that the President is spending the weekend in his Daura hometown is a clear indication that the party is waxing stronger in the state despite the All Progressive Congress (APC)’s claim of a one party state.

  • Omisore’s men dump PDP ahead of poll

    •Yet to decide alternative platform

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to ex-Osun State Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore yesterday resolved to dump the party for another platform.

Members had gathered at their secretariat on Gbongan Road, Osogbo, to chart the way after leaving the congress of March 25, where Soji Adagunodo became chairman.

Dr. Bayo Faforiji, who led members to burn PDP flags and tear their cards at the party secretariat, said they were yet to decide which party to join.

The Nation learnt that the group is consulting on the alternative platform for its leader, Omisore, to contest the governorship election.

It was gathered that leaders of the group met in Gbongan, headquarters of Ayedade Local Government, last weekend, where they considered Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Omisore group was not happy that the national secretariat of PDP abandoned it in favour of the Adagunodo group during the congress.

Faforiji said: “…it is clear to everybody that the national secretariat has pitched its tent with the Adagunodo group, hence the need for us to move on and mobilise our people for the election slated for September 22.

“Omisore is a household name in the political landscape of Osun. He is not a greenhorn in the power play. He understands the terrain better than anyone. As it is, we are consulting to find a better and credible platform to achieve our leader’s governorship ambition.”

A leader in the Adagunodo group, Bamidele Salam, regretted the move by the Omisore group to dump PDP, saying the party had assisted the senator to achieve so much lately.

He hoped PDP leaders would move to convince Omisore and his loyalists not to dump the party.

  • PDP chief Filani dies at 71

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart from Ekiti State Chie Ishola Filani is dead.

Filani, a former Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the aborted third republic, dies at 71. He would have been 72 in September.

Former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George said:  “The sudden, unexpected and very painful transition of Chief Filani indeed diminishes all of us who knew him well and associated with him far beyond the political landscape.

“He was a man of warmth, full of devotion, enveloped within whatever cause he pursued with vigour and sheer honesty. He resonated with settled intelligence and far reaching determined articulation. He could be combative in debate, but without malice.”

Lagos PPD Chairman Moshood Salvador described him as “a perfect gentleman who never shied away from what he believed in.”

His friend Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said:  “I have been pained since I heard of his death. I have known Ishola for many years, I have known his family in Ikole Ekiti and we have been in the same political party together. He was in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and later he was the Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Babagana Kingibe. He later came to the PDP and he became the chairman of the PDP in the Southwest. Nigeria has lost someone put contributed to the political development of the country.”

  • Mustapha, others dump PDP for APC

A former lawmaker representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Senator Lekan Mustapha and ex-Deputy Speaker Ogun State House of Assembly Remi Hassan have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abeokuta.

The politicians led thousands of PDP members from the district to APC.

They said they were motivated by the developmental strides of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

  • I’m not aware of alleged Cambridge Analytica fraud, Jonathan insists

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday insisted that he was not aware of the alleged electoral fraud raised against Cambridge Analytica.

The current administration is said to be scrutinizing the reports of the data mining firm Cambridge Analytica, which swiped the data of more than 50 million Facebook users to sway elections in many country including Nigeria.

It was said to have waged a campaign to perpetuate discord and hack into personal records of the then leading opposition Candidate, Muhammadu Buhari in 2007.

To get to the bottom of the issue, the Federal Government is said to have set up an in-house committee to investigate whether Cambridge Analytica’s work for the then ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in 2007 and 2015 general elections campaigns to break the laws of this country or infringed on the rights of other parties and their candidates.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, a special investigator may be appointed and possibly, criminal prosecutions by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

But a statement on Thursday by Jonathan’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, entitled “Re: ‘Jonathan unaware PDP used Cambridge Analytica, spokesman claims’” reads “My attention has been drawn to a trending story entitled ‘Jonathan unaware PDP used Cambridge Analytica, spokesman claims’.

“I write to clarify that there is an element of mischief in the story, with the reporter disingenuously seeking to drag the People’s Democratic Party into the report, and make the party look like an accomplice, in a case it was not even mentioned.

“The truth is that in my reaction to a question from an AFP reporter in a telephone chat on whether the former President knew about the alleged involvement of Cambridge Analytica in the 2015 elections, I had simply responded thus: “All the stories written about the subject
so far had all clarified that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was not aware of such attempt, if there were any.”

“Although I was correctly quoted, to the effect that “former President Jonathan was not aware of it”, I consider the attempt to link my response with an orchestrated PDP involvement in the allegation as simply preposterous. This is because the PDP was neither mentioned in
the scandal nor came up in my chat with the reporter. It is instructive that the whistleblower who originated the allegation has been consistent in associating it to an unnamed businessman, who was neither linked to the party nor to the Jonathan campaign.

“It is therefore deceitful for any pundit to blame the allegation on the PDP or anybody close to the former President, even before investigations were concluded,” he stated.

  • Society sees women involved in politics as loose – PDP Women Leader

Most Nigerian women stay away from politics because society views those involved in the game as loose, Mrs. Martina Dakup, PDP Women Leader in Plateau, has said.

“A lot of women want to participate in politics; many of them want to be part of the decision making processes, but they are discouraged by society’s view of women who participate in politics,’’ Dakup told the News men on Thursday in Jos.

According to her, the Nigerian society still believes that women are supposed to remain at home and cater for their families and children.

“When you stray outside, the wrong impression will be created; people will assassinate your character and call you names.

“Only very bold women can openly participate in politics because there are so many negative cultural and traditional beliefs to contend with,’’ She said.

She identified other reasons for the poor participation of women in politics to include the lack of finance to support their ambitions.

“Seeking elective political positions involve a lot of money which most women do not have.

“Money is required for campaigns, rallies, mobilization of delegates for primary elections, allowances to agents during all stages of elections, and other logistics.

“So much money is also required for publicity, entertainment and other activities before, during and after elections,’’ she noted.

Dakup also decried the prevalence of violence during elections, saying that the vice had always discouraged women from seeking elective offices.

“Most politicians sponsor thugs to disrupt elections and cause confusion. In most cases, people get injured or even killed. Such situations scare women,’’ she explained.

The women leader also said that most husbands were not willing to allow their wives to keep late nights which were usually inevitable during political meetings.

“Most political meetings hold in the night and drag to the early hours of the next day. Husbands hardly accept situations where their wives will spend such long moments away from home.

“If a woman is allowed to stay that long in one night, she is not likely to be allowed a second chance, no matter what the meeting is all about.

“Many women have lost their marriages because of their participation in politics. Clearly, it is not easy, especially for us on the Plateau,” she said.

Dakup, however, said that some women had braved the odds to be active in politics, and urged Nigerians to be more positive and supportive of such women.

“It is certainly not easy for women in politics, but those in it are making the sacrifices so that the society will be better for it,’’ she said.

Dakup said that the PDP was issuing free nomination forms to women to encourage them to seek elective positions, adding that women were also being mobilised to see politics more positively.

She said that women groups were also mobilising resources to support their colleagues to seek elective positions, and advised women interested in elective positions to venture out and benefit from such efforts.

Dakup said that the women wing of the PDP was organising workshops, symposia, seminars and occasional visits to rural areas to sensitise women on the need to be active in politics.

“What we have told them is that being appointed into positions is not enough. We have told them that women must seek elective positions and win seats that will empower them to be assertive,’’ she said.

  • Imposition: Former Ekiti deputy governor Lawal quits PDP

Former Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal, has joined the ever-increasing list of prominent politicians dumping the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The Nation learnt on Wednesday that Lawal’s exit was triggered by the decision of Governor Ayo Fayose to impose his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola as “the sole candidate” for the July 14 governorship poll.

Lawal said the decision to quit the PDP was hinged on “the available fact that the list of delegates to vote at the primary has been doctored in favour of Olusola.”

However, the ex-deputy governor did not reveal the political party he would join with his supporters ahead of the governorship poll.

He has also resigned as non-Executive Director representing Ekiti State on the board of Odu’a Investment Limited, a business conglomerate owned by the six Southwest states.

Lawal served as Deputy Governor between May 29, 2007 and October 15, 2010 under former Governor Segun Oni.

The Ado-Ekiti born politician is the third deputy governor to leave PDP in the last one year over alleged autocracy, subversion of party constitution and imposition of candidates by Fayose.

Former deputy governors who had left PDP are Chief Abiodun Aluko and Chief Adebisi Omoyeni, who had joined Mega Party of Nigeria and Social Democratic Party (SDP) to pursue their governorship ambition.

In a letter dated April 3, 2018 and addressed to the PDP Chairman in Ward 9, Ado Ekiti, Mr. Tope Makanjuola , Lawal said his resignation took effect from the date he communicated same to the party.

The letter entitled: ‘Withdrawal of Membership’ reads: “Reference to above, I wish to inform you that I, Sikiru Tae Lawal with membership number 2620001 registered at Ward 9, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State wish to withdraw my membership of your party, PDP effective from today, Tuesday, 3rd April 2018.”

In the letter to the Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Limited, a copy of which was sent to Governor Fayose, Lawal said: “I wish to notify you of my intention to resign my appointment as a non-executive Director representing Ekiti State on the board of Odu’a investment Company Limited with effect from 1st May, 2018.

“I wish to thank the Ekiti State governor and the good people of Ekiti State for the opportunity given me to serve on the board. I also appreciate the cooperation of my colleagues and staff of Odu’a during my stay”, he stated.

Lawal said he decided to take such a far reaching decision to afford him the opportunity to be able to defend his political interest and that of his people in another party.

He added: “Whatever you do in politics, you do it for yourself and your people. It seems PDP no longer needs us, because the processes leading to our primary have been badly manipulated in favour of an aspirant.

“The message was clear that there is no level playing ground again in our party and there is no point wasting time in a party that has lost its bearing, because the PDP is no longer the people’s choice, it has lost its goodwill due to pervasive impunity in the system.

“The PDP supposed to be a democratic party, but this is not the case. I am not over ambitious but I have no choice than to leave when someone has said your services are no longer needed.”

When asked the party he would adopt to contest for the election, Lawal said: “I am consulting with my people. I consulted them before taking this action and I believe we must come together to agree on the platform to be adopted.”

  • How PDP looted Nigeria, by Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke with reporters in Lagos on why he released the names of suspected looters, following the challenge by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Federal Government to substantiate its allegations of corruption against the opposition party.  Group  Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU was there.

Was it panic that made you to release the list of alleged looters?

We were challenged to do so. Don’t forget that on their own, the PDP said that they apologised to Nigerians for the way they ran Nigeria aground and we said, yes, apology is accepted, but, please return the funds. One of them challenged us to name those who had stolen money.

I think gradually, it is becoming fashionable when you remind PDP that they brought us to this sorry path, they will say stop talking about what we did, please, continue with your own. But, we cannot move. It is important that Nigerians remember how we got here and the same people who have made no atonement say that they want to come back in 2019 to power.

So, it is important for us to remind them. Let me tell you, this government is not in any panic. We are so proud of our acheivements that, in less than three years, I can stand up and say this is what we have achieved in the area of insecurity, this is what we have achieved in the economy, in the area of ease of doing business. There is no area we have not made our mark.

We lifted Nigeria from number 165 in the ease of doing business to 145. It is not a mean feat. And we exited recession at a time when the price of crude was low. We were in recession when we implemented the diversification of the economy.

It is on record that, despite all these challenges that we have not retrenched one person. So, why should we be afraid? Why should we panic?

I don’t see any reason why we should panic. I think it is the imagination of people that the government is panicky. No.

Do you intend releasing the list of alleged looters in the APC?

There is a difference between allegations and established cases. All the cases I have mentioned (alleged PDP looters) are already in court. You see, how many times have people written that Lai Mohammed has billions of dollars. But, these are allegations that are just ridiculous. I can assure you that if there is any allegation against any member of this government, this government will investigate it.

Nigerians are saying that there is no difference between PDP and APC that it is because those people who left PDP for APC are being protected?

That is what you are saying. It would be unfair to say that everybody that joined APC from PDP is a looter; it would be unfair. I am saying that, whether you are of ACN stock or PDP stock or CPC stock and you are found to be corrupt, you will be investigated.

Are you not overreaching yourself by pronouncing them guilty while they are still in court?

They have said, name the looters, and we said these people took money

But the courts can find otherwise.

That is the business of the court. I am saying that on the 24th of February, Secondus took N100 million in cash. The then National Financial Secretary took N700 million. These are facts.

They said name, and I said these are the people that were reported to have stolen money. So, what is prejudicial about it? Let them go and solve their matters in court, but if you challenge us to name names, we will name names!

You cite your achievement of taking this country out of recession, but by the time the PDP handed over, this country was not in recession….

Recession is when a country’s GDP slows in two consecutive quarters consecutively. It is a technical term.

But, this happened under your government…

Yes, no doubt. But, for a recession to happen, you look at what preceded those two quarters. Number one, we came in May 2015 by which time the major revenue for the country, petroleum had dropped in price by almost 50 percent. We came in and met virtually no savings at all.

What we inherited was $23 billion, we came at a time when, at least, 20 states could not pay salaries. We came in at a time when infrastructure was almost zero.

The vice-president gave an example that, in 2015, the ministries of transport, power, works and housing combined had less than N100 billion released for that year. Whereas the year we came in, we had N565 billion invested in that same infrastructural sector.

It is a measure of the rightness of our approach that, if you want to boost the economy, you must diversify the economy. So, we went into agriculture, went into mining, went into services and what actually brought us out of recession was agriculture, mining and the rest.

That we were able to come out of recession and continue to consolidate means that our Economic and Growth Plan is working.

But, the projects the president is commissioning were projects done by the states…

When the president visits a state, he visits to reconnect with the people of the state, but of course, the governors of the states would want to have the opportunity to have the president commission their projects. They are not doing it just because they want to humour or honour Mr. President. They do it also because they want the attention of Mr. President in certain areas. This morning I was with Mr. President at the Eko Atlantic City. It was an extremely successful visit because Mr. President saw the enormity of the work going on at the Eko Atlantic City and the state government knows that you need this rapport with the Federal Government in order to achieve a lot.

I was with the president to commission the Ikeja Bus Terminal and the governor revealed there that Mr. President approved a waiver of customs duties payable for about 400 buses that are coming. This is because the president saw how that terminal is going to impact on the city. You can imagine what that waiver means to the Lagos State Government. So, when Mr. President comes to commission projects in the states, it is not because the Federal Government has no project of its own to commission.

The APC Committee has submitted its report on true federalism. When is the president going to respond to the proposal?

It is a party matter. It is not a government matter. The party will still have to adopt it before they will make recommendations to government.

Has the administration been able to achieve its campaign promises?

It is not for me to score him; it is for me to reel out what we have achieved. It is for the pubic to now say this is 1 percent, this is 2 percent, this is 3 percent. Honestly, I can say without fear of equivocation that the government has done pretty well in the broad areas of economy, security and fighting corruption and the various social intervention.

I can start with the economy, for instance, and I will tell you that with less than half of the revenue available to the previous government, we have been able to start a revolution in infrastructure by devoting N1.3 trillion to capital projects, ranging from roads to railways to water ways to agriculture.

In the area of roads, we took a N100 billion sukkuk loan and with that loan we are undertaking 25 roads spread over the six geopolitical zones. Today, there is no area of government where you do not feel the impact of government on roads.

Railways, the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge will become operational I think at the end of 2018 or next year, meanwhile, the Calabar – Lagos has been awarded also. In the area of agriculture, which is one area I think we have done very well, we have been able to create more rice farmers all over the country. From 5 million farmers, we have today about 11 million rice farmers. For you to see the rightness of our approach, so far, less than N100 billion has been invested in the anchor borrowers programme and we have this result.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has paid more than N1.2 trillion as bailout. I can imagine if just 10 per cent of that were to have been invested in agriculture, probably today, we would be talking of self-sufficiency, not only in rice, but probably in cassava and probably in weath.

Our anchor borrowers programme has proven to be a success. In the area of the economy, you have heard me say that we inherited $23 billion in reserves, today we have $46 billion in foreign reserves.

Ease of doing business, we have moved from 165 to 145, in mining the activities in local mining, today we have created thousands of jobs for people mining limestone and the rest.

In the area of the economy whether in terms of figures about employment or in terms of social infrastructure, we have done what no government has done. I don’t know of any government in Nigeria that has either fed 7.5 million pupils in one day. To many people it is not important, but can you imagine if you are feeding seven million pupils and if it costs you just N70 to feed each pupil, it means in a day you are creating an economy of N490 million across the value chain of cooks, vendors and farmers. And this has led to an increase of school enrolment.

All these have been done under three years and I think we are going to embark on a road show to inspect roads that are being done in virtually every state of the federation.

We have been able to bring back many jobs by renewing these contracts and many of these contracts that this government is doing are contracts that were signed in 2007, 2009, 2012. We have hardly awarded any new contract.

In the area of power, we inherited 2,900 MWs of power, today we are generating more than 7,000 MW of power. Of course, we are unable to transmit all the power because of the state of the transmission line, and don’t forget that even that power had been largely privatised even before we came in and we had been able to give support. We guaranteed N702 billion revolving loan that if you produce, we pay and that is why you have seen this exponential increase in power supply.

So, I do not see any area where we cannot say we have not made progress.

But, what of security? When you came in, there was not as much violence as we have today. People were not dying like this…

I think you were not noticing. A week ago, I was in Zamfara, and I did not know that cattle rustling started since 2009 until then. Do you know that more lives have been lost in Zamfara than in Benue State? Of course, it is no consolation. I think thousands of lives have been lost there. I didn’t know that cattle rustling has been that dangerous. It didn’t start in 2015; neither did the farmers, herders clash start in 2015. The Agatu killings didn’t take place under this government. It did not. It is unfortunate that what is largely an environmental, economic, social issue, we have made it assume an ethnic and religious one.

Is it not because your government didn’t manage it well?

    How do you manage it?

The government has been saying that the former administration ran down the economy and that the former president doled out money ahead of the elections, so, why is the government not prosecuting him and others?

If you know how many cases are in court!

It is alleged that the government is using security agencies to intimidate bank officials and other institutions that are privy to the account of Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Why is the government doing this?
