PDP regrets fielding Atiku in 2023 – Sen. Abba Moro

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regrets fielding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro has said.

He described the move as an error that cost the party dearly.

Moro, who spoke in a televised interview, revealed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) made a bold decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region, a move he insists is rooted in fairness, equity, and justice.

“Zoning the ticket to the south was a strategic correction of past mistakes. To people who have been somewhat pessimistic about the resilience of the PDP, it could be shocking,” he stated, addressing the surprise that greeted the NEC’s announcement.

“You will recall that I have told you here that a lot of activities have been put in place by the PDP towards resolving some of the conflicts within the party. And that out of the ashes of the storm, we’re going to bounce back.”

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Moro admitted that fielding a northern candidate like Atiku was a miscalculation.

“Majority of us, virtually all of us, agreed that a mistake was made in 2023, fielding a northern candidate,” he said.

“And this time around, in the spirit of unity, in the spirit of fairness and justice, PDP leaders decided to swallow their saliva and say, look, let’s take this thing to the south, where majority of the people expected that it would have been.”

The Senate Minority Leader acknowledged the party’s regret over the 2023 outcome, stating, “To lose a very monumental election in that disastrous manner, as it were, certainly is something for regrets.”

He explained the decision to open the ticket in 2023, allowing a northern candidate to succeed a northern president, “backfired” as Nigerians resisted the move, contributing to the PDP’s electoral loss.

On the possibility of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi returning to the PDP, Moro revealed ongoing efforts to woo him back.

“In the run-up to 2027, I’m aware that certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, saying, hey, come back home.

“This is what we are likely going to do. And if you come, you stand a chance of being a candidate,” he said.

He added that Obi’s potential return could bolster the PDP’s chances, noting, “If Peter Obi comes back and is the most favoured candidate, the most supported candidate, and becomes a candidate, the PDP will make an impact in the 2027 election.”

Moro also addressed speculations about former President Goodluck Jonathan as a potential candidate.

He dismissed concerns about constitutional barriers, citing judicial precedents.

“In 2015, when President Jonathan and GCFR wanted to run, there were hews and cries all over the place about the constitutionality of his candidature,” he said.

“But eventually, it was settled, even by the court, that he was qualified to run, and that is why he ran.”

He argued that Jonathan’s prior tenure, including the period he completed late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s term, does not disqualify him from contesting again.

BREAKING: Anambra Assembly suspends PDP lawmaker over social media post

The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Bernard Udemezue, for three months over what it described as a “damaging” social media post.

Udemezue, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, had alleged on his social media handles that his constituency was being marginalised in the disbursement of constituency allowances.

The matter first came up at plenary last Tuesday after Tony Muobike, representing Aguata 2 Constituency, raised it under the matter of urgent public importance, with Chief Whip Jude Ngobili (Ihiala 1) seconding the motion.

  • PDP zoned presidency in error against constitution, says group

PDP zoned presidency in error against constitution, says group

…vows to continue supporting Gbenga Hashim for presidency in 2027

The Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement (GHSM) has faulted the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the south, describing it as a constitutional and strategic blunder.

The GHSM declared that it will continue to advocate for Dr. Gbenga Hashim’s presidential candidacy in 2027, despite what it described as the strategic and constitutional error committed by the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC).

The group warned that such action may not only jeopardize the party’s chances in 2027, but could also expose its candidate to possible disqualification by the courts.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the movement argued that the PDP NEC, despite acting on a resolution that may enjoy majority support, lacks the legal authority to restrict elective offices to any region, saying, “this violates both the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended) and the PDP’s own constitution.”

The group cited Section 42(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which forbids any form of discrimination against citizens on grounds of ethnic group, place of origin, religion, sex, or political opinion, adding that shutting out aspirants based on “zoning” runs contrary to this provision.

He further referenced Section 7(2)(c) of the PDP Constitution, which affirms that the party shall “conform to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” stressing that zoning elective offices amounts to a direct violation.

The movement reminded Nigerians that in 1999, despite the overwhelming sentiment of the June 12 annulment, the PDP did not zone its presidential ticket.

It stated that aspirants from across the country contested freely, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (South West), Dr. Alex Ekwueme (South East), Chief Jim Nwobodo (South East), Alhaji Abubakar Rimi (North West) and Dr Francis Ellah (South South).

“In that election, every aspirant exercised their democratic rights, and Nigerians expressed their sentiments through legitimate votes, not through exclusion,” Hamzat recalled.

Similarly, in 2003, despite being the sitting president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was not handed an automatic ticket.

He contested alongside other heavyweights such as Chief Barnabas Gemade (North Central) and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi (North West), while aspirants from other regions were also cleared to participate.

The group further recalled that the PDP’s loss of power in 2015 was largely a consequence of the party’s deviation from this tradition.

By granting President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic ticket and shutting out northern aspirants, the party provoked a major rebellion that saw five northern governors and several key stakeholders walk out of the convention in protest.

“History has shown us that whenever the PDP abandons its democratic tradition of open contests, it pays a heavy price,” Hamzat stated. “The zoning of the 2027 presidential ticket is, therefore, not just an error but a dangerous miscalculation.”

Hamzat maintained that no political party in the history of Nigeria has ever zoned its presidential ticket to a particular region, stressing that the PDP NEC’s action sets a negative precedent that could deepen regional divisions and make national unity more elusive.

The movement reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for a level playing field within the PDP and vowed to sustain its support for Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim in the 2027 presidential race.

“We believe Dr. Gbenga Hashim represents the true spirit of unity, inclusivity, and visionary leadership that Nigeria desperately needs. No amount of unconstitutional zoning will deter our movement. We will continue to push for the reversal of this error before the November convention,” the statement concluded.

    • Wike: zoning to South vindicates me
    • Jonathan, Makinde, Obi on the radar

Yesterday’s zoning of the Presidential ticket to the South has effectively ended the ambition of former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The decision was taken at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the former ruling party in Abuja, after a review of the report submitted by the Convention Committee, led by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri,  and the Zoning Panel, headed by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.

Conversely, the option, due to be ratified at the November convention in Ibadan, will bolster the aspirations of potential contenders from the South.

Some of those linked with Presidential ambition in the party are Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and those being wooed to join the race on the party’s ticket like former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

Another presidential hopeful, Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, said the zoning to the South was wrongly done, declaring that nevertheless, he will still seek the party’s ticket.

Jonathan, who was president on the platform of the main opposition party between 2011 and 2015, has been asked to join the race by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and Diri.

Party sources said his ambition may be attractive to PDP leaders from the North because of the belief that he can spend only one term, if elected in 2027.

Although it has been alleged that Makinde was interested in the race, there is neither confirmation nor denial from the governor.

However, Obi, the 2019 PDP presidential running mate, is also being persuaded to retrace his steps to the party due to the surprise impact he made during the 2023 poll.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who hailed the decision on zoning, said it would foster equity, fairness and justice in the party.

Members of the PDP NEC were in one accord as they adopted the zoning resolution at the meeting where the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, was elevated to substantive national chairman.

He was sworn in by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Alhaji Kamaldeen Ajibade.

Other highlights of the meeting were the deliberation on the report of the Convention Committee, led by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and the Zoning Committee, headed by Diri.

Noting the gale of defections that hit the party, Damagum, who said it would not affect PDP, said the defectors are in a ‘one chance vehicle.”

Hailing the resolution on zoning, the House of Representatives Caucus vowed to ensure the victory of the party in future polls.

According to the communique read by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba,  all the national positions held by chieftains from the North were retained in the region.

Also, all the national offices currently held by chieftains from the South were retained in the region.

NEC also directed that the positions should be micro-zoned within the regions.

However, Ologunagba said:  “Having retained the position of the national chairman in the North, the presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 election is hereby zoned to the South.”

He added: “NEC expressed satisfaction on the level of preparedness of the party at its various organs, chapters and structures for the 2025 Elective National Convention scheduled for Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on November 15 and 16.

“NEC acknowledged with satisfaction the efforts and commitment of PDP Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees (BoT), National Working Committee (NWC), National Assembly Caucus and other relevant bodies of the party towards success of the forthcoming 2025 National Convention at Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

“NEC also received update from the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee and directed the committee to circulate the Draft Constitution Amendment to various organs and chapters of the party for further inputs.”

Wike: I am vindicated over zoning

Wike hailed the decision to retain the national chairman in the North and zone the president to the South.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said the decisions would correct past mistakes.

He said: “Now that the party has realised its mistake of not listening to Wike and the G-5 in 2022, and have chosen to do what they said three years after, have they not been vindicated now?

“The FCT minister and the G-5 had insisted that the presidential candidate of the PDP and its national chairman must not remain in the same zone, insisting that since Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, from the North had emerged as the presidential candidate, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, also from the North, must resign to pave the way for a national chairman from the South.

“Ayu, however, insisted on not resigning, with Atiku and his group backing him. Aftermath of this was the electoral misfortune the party suffered in 2023, followed by instability after the elections.

“But today, the NEC resolved that since the national chairman of the party is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 presidential ticket be zoned to the South.

“Has PDP not come back to eat its own vomit?

“Sadly, they know the truth. Wike simply said, take the chairmanship to the South if you want to gain the presidency, but they said no, they must take the two, and the PDP lost!

“They have realised the mistake they made in 2022 and are correcting it in 2025. But is it not too late already, bearing in mind that the only way the zoning can be justified is for the South to conclude its eight years, while the presidency returns to the North in 2031.”

    Zoning illegal, says Olawepo-Hashim

Olawepo-Hashim said zoning cannot stand because it has no basis in the PDP constitution.

During the NEC meeting, his supporters stormed the party secretariat, urging him to declare his presidential ambition.

The rally was coordinated by three major support groups: Hashim Unity Group, led by Musa Makanda, former Speaker of Bwari Area Council; The Hashims, led by Mr. Sunday Tsado; and Hashim Advocates, led by Mallam Abba, former PDP youth leader in the FCT in 1999.

The group leaders said Dr. Hashim embodies the finest qualities of leadership, adding that he has demonstrated vision and integrity in his advocacy for democracy and good governance.

Olawepo-Hashim, who reacted to the decision on zoning, insisted that it was done in error.

Damagum, Wabara: Road to 2027 not easy

The Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, urged the party to embrace reconciliation and confront future electoral challenges in an atmosphere of unity.

He said: “The road to 2027 will not be easy, but if we unite, if we embrace sacrifice, if we open our doors to reconciliation, there is no doubt in my mind that the PDP will again rise as the hope of Nigerians.

“We must be honest with ourselves. Reclaiming victory in 2027 will demand more than rhetoric; it will demand sacrifice in exchange for the collective interest of the party and more importantly, the Nigerian people.”

Damagum called for unity, sacrifice and inclusion ahead of the national convention and 2027 polls.

He spoke on women’s representation, noting that the PDP, which has already adopted the 35 per cent affirmative action for women in its constitution, should implement it.

Damagum said zoning would ensure unity, cohesion, fairness and inclusivity in the party.

Some of those who attended the meeting are: Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Duoye Diri; Bala Mohammed Bauchi; Ademola Adeleke (Osun); Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Chief Jim Nwobodo; Prof Jerry Gana; Samuel Anyanwu; Alhaji Adamu Muazu; Chief Olabode George; Senator Babangida Aliyu; Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo; Chief Mike Ogiadomhe; Philip Salawu; Hajia Zainab Maina, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja; Samuel Ortom; Hajia Ina Ciroma; Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; Mr. Kingsley Chinda and Senator Bello Gwarzo.

Alleging that the ruling APC has an agenda to ‘to turn our country into a totalitarian one-party state’, the PDP NEC gave a r3reassurance that the party will work harder towards repositioning itself, to regain power in 2027 while its next (103rd) meeting is to hold on Wednesday, 15th October, 2025

During the PDP NEC meeting at Wadata Plaza on Monday, about one thousand supporters of the former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, stormed the venue, with placards expressing their demand that he declares interest in the 2027 presidential election.

The jubilant crowd, clad in colorful vests and face caps, carried bold banners and sang solidarity songs in support of the business mogul and politician, describing him as “a credible alternative and a unifier the nation urgently needs at this critical time.”

Damagum echoed the call for solidarity, stressing the importance of inclusion, particularly for women and youth, as the party heads towards its national convention in Ibadan this November.

He noted that the PDP constitution already provides 35% affirmative action for women and urged its full implementation in leadership positions.

The National Convention holds in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, in November.

Ahead of the meeting, four organs of the party – the Governors’ Forum, National Caucus, National Working Committee  (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) – held pre-NEC meeting for the purpose of ironing out differences and achieving consensus on issues germane to the National Convention.

PDP governors, who adjourned their meeting in Gausau, Zamfara State, at the weekend, re-converged on the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja to brainstorm on knotty issues that could further polarise the party.

According to the pre-convention time-table released by the party, the sales of nomination and expression of interest forms for national offices would take place between September 3 and 22.

Last week, the Southern PDP Zoning Summit convened by Diri resolved to table its micro-zoning proposals to the NEC today, despite the objection by the pro-Nyesom Wike group, which alleged lack of wide consultation and exclusion of many stakeholders.

Sources said some aggrieved party chieftains may submit petitions to the NEC on allegations of anti-party activities against the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, who has started drumming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Wike, who has given conditions for peace in the party, insisted that the zonal congress that produced Chief Dan Orbih as National Vice Chairman (South) should be upheld by the national leadership.

He has also said that Chief Ali Odefa should not be recognised as National Vice Chairman (East) because the court had invalidate his claim to the position.
