    Anambra PDP crisis worsens

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State yesterday dismissed as a nullity, last weekend’s congress that produced Prince Ken Emeakayi as state Chairman.

The Ejike Oguebego faction claimed the existence of a court order given in 2013 by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt , declaring that status quo antebellum be maintained pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter.

Oguebego, at a press conference in Awka, brandished a copy of the court order and an October 23, 2014 letter, purportedly written by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the PDP   national chairman recognising Oguebego and his group.

Oguebego,  who is backed by Chief Chris Uba, told reporters that last weekend’s  congress  in the state was an exercise in nullity, as his tenure subsists until it ends on March 17,2016.

He said it is only then that the PDP can hold fresh ward, local government and state congresses in Anambra.

  • Tribunal grants Isiaka access to INEC’s documents

Tribunal grants Isiaka access to INEC’s documents

The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal yesterday rejected bids by Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gboyega Isiaka, from accessing the materials used in the April 11 election.

The tribunal granted Isiaka’s prayer to have unfettered access to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) documents used during the election.

Tribunal Chairman, Justice Henry Olusiyi said Isiaka’s prayer succeeded and was granted because it has considerable merit.

According to Justice Olusiyi, Amosun’s counsel Olumide Ayeni was unable to convince the court how the granting of Isiaka’s prayer would be prejudice.

Isiaka’s counsel Funminiyi Adeleke argued that INEC’s documents would assist in the determination of the substantive petition before the tribunal.

Adeleke argued that granting the application would be in line with the applicant’s right to fair hearing as well as strengthening justice.

But, in opposing the application at the time, Ayeni argued that it was grossly incompetent and that the tribunal also lacked the jurisdiction to entertain it

The counsel also reckoned that the application sought to embark upon a fishing expedition for evidence, thus rendering it an utter and complete ruse calculated to mislead the tribunal.

He explained that all documents being sought by the applicant have been in his custody as demonstrated by the available information before the court.

In granting the application, Justice Olusiyi said the issue for determination was resolved in the affirmative in support of the applicant.

“Counsel to the first respondent failed to show how granting the application would prejudice him.

“There’s considerable merit in the application, it succeeds and is hereby granted,” he ruled.

The tribunal, however, directed that Amosun’s and APC’s representatives should be available during the inspection, which should be concluded in seven days.

  • Fresh crisis hits PDP in Anambra

Fresh crisis hits PDP in Anambra

A fresh crisis has hit the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, despite the congresses conducted by the party last week in the state that produced a new chairman in Prince Ken Emeakayi.

The Chief Ejike Oguebego faction came up with a subsisting court order Friday, given by the federal High court in Portharcourt in 2013, declaring that status quo antebellum be maintained pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter.

Also, the faction presented a copy of the letter written by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by one Musa Adamu (the secretary to the commission, to (PDP) national chairman, dated 23rd October, 2014 recognising Oguebego and his group as a result of letters of court orders, rulings and consent judgments in which INEC was not a party.

The letter by INEC was entitled “RE: current status of the leadership of the people’s Democratic Party in Anambra state” which was made available to reporters yesterday in Awka.

The federal High case was between Ejike Oguebego, chief Gilbert Okoye as PDP chairman and secretary respectively and Hon Chuks Okoye, as legal adviser as plaintiffs, against PDP, Anambra state chapter, INEC, Ogonna .O. Ogonna and Osy Nsugbe (youth leader) as defendants.

It was in suit no: FHC/PH/CS/213/2013 before Justice I. L Ojukwu, declivered on 31st day of May 2013 and Justice S A Aliyu delivered his own on 22nd day of August, 2013.

The plaintiffs had prayed the court for interlocutory injunction restraining the 1stdefendant whether by itself, privies, agents, servants assigns or whatever name they may be called from holding out, recognizing, announcing the name of, dealing with or doing anything whatsoever through Ken Emeakayi as he was expelled from the party as the chairman of PDP, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive originating summons.

Also, an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the 2nd defendant (INEC) from doing anything with Emeakayi pending the hearing and determination of the substantive originating summons.

The plaintiffs were represented byJ.T.U Nnodum SAN, while PDP was represented by chief Tagbo Ike and INEC team of lawyers was led by Onyechi Ikpeazu SAN in opposing the application,

But the court ordered as follows “that parties are hereby ordered to maintain “status quo antebellum” pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter”

“That the parties especially the 1st and 2nd defendants are hereby ordered to comply and obey the orders of the court delivered on 31st day of May, 2013 by Hon justice I. L Ojukwu and 22nd day of August, 2013 by Hon justice S A Aliyu, forth with”

“That the 1st and 2nd defendants are hereby ordered to recognize and deal with the plaintiffs in all election matters in Anambra state, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter”

However, speaking further, Oguebego told reporters that the congress was a nullity, adding that their tenure was still subsisting until the order was vacated.

Oguebego, further said that their tenure would end in 17th March, 2016, adding that until then, the PDP in the state would start thinking of a fresh ward, local government and state congresses in Anambra state.

  • Edo 2016: Dokpesi heads PDP reconciliation committee

Edo 2016: Dokpesi heads PDP reconciliation committee

Towards ensuring victory in next year’s governorship election in Edo State, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has inaugurated a 17-man Reconciliation and Mobilization committee headed by Chairman of Daar Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

The committee was to among other things reach out to aggrieve PDP members and preach message of hope to the people of the state.

Inaugurating the committee, Thursday, State Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, said the PDP was ready to occupy Osadebey Avenue, Edo seat of power.

Chief Orbih noted that members of the committee were carefully selected because of their track record and wondered why Governor Adams Oshiomhole took the lead to accusing the PDP of corruption.

Orbih queried why the Oshiomhole should collect over N42bn since 2008 as security votes when there was no serious security threat in the state.

According to him, “Who is Oshiomhole to be talking about $6 billion taken by somebody to the US? Since when did he become the conscience of the nation? Who is he to be informed by an official of the US government?

“We, however, understand that all the noise he has been making is coming as a result of the realization of the potent force of the PDP in Edo State. He is doing this in an attempt to divert attention from the unprecedented primitive looting that is ongoing in Edo State under his watch.

Chief Dokpesi in his acceptance speech described the APC as a party that lacked democratic credentials.

Dokpesi said the responsibilities of the committee were critical to the political fortunes of the party in next year’s Governorship elections.

He said the current opposition status of the PDP in the state was caused by the PDP members penchant for undermining well known democratic practices, ‘lack of internal democracy, the crave for personal interest to override the general good of the party and the determined posturing of self before others, are to mention a few the root cause of our political dilemma in state.’

“The answer is inevitably that we are guilty as charged. What we have to do to regain power and disband the situation where a minority currently governs the majority is very simple.

“A sizeable majority of the people of Edo State are PDP in heart, soul and mind. Their current frustration stems from how certain things have been done in the past. We have failed to deliver on the letters and spirit of equity, fairness and justice. Ironically, our own sing-song for pushing minority rights at the centre.”

Other members of the reconciliation and mobilisation committee as announced by the
Edo State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, are Hon Abass Braimah, Senator Odion Ugbesia, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, Chief Solomon Edebiri, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Mr Matthew Uduoyekewmen, Hon John Yakubu and others.

PDP seeks DSS boss removal over partisanship

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the removal of the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Daura, over alleged partisanship.

According to the party, Daura was the chairman of the Intelligence Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the last presidential election campaign.

Addressing journalists shortly after the party’s National Working Committee meeting on Wednesday, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, accused the DSS under Daura of harassing, arresting and detaining members of the PDP.

Secondus cited instances of arrest and detention of PDP members and electoral officials in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States where the party’s victories in the last governorship election were being challenged by the APC at the tribunals.

The party chairman said, “We wish to bring to the attention of Nigerians and the international community the activities of the APC government. We have observed the government of the APC, especially the DSS in the past few months.

“The DSS has continued to harass, arrest and detain PDP members as well as officials over election petitions pending before tribunals in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.

“There is no reason for the harassment because it is against all known laws. We call on President Buhari to call the DSS to order because the nation is gradually tending towards anarchy.

“Daura was the chairman of APC’s Intelligence Committee during the last presidential election campaign. As a member of the APC, he is partial and partisan. He cannot be fair to the opposition. We call on President Buhari to review his appointment.”

  • APC, PDP give Buhari nod to go after looters

APC, PDP give Buhari nod to go after looters

President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to fight corruption got a major boost yesterday.

His party – the All Progressives Congress (APC)  – and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had a rare agreement – that Buhari should go after corruption suspects.

But the PDP cautioned him “not to victimise innocent citizens”.

Some prominent citizens have been arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Others are being investigated.

To the APC, the investigation of those who plundered the nation’s commonwealth and prosecution is necessary to remind future officials that “holding a public office is a call to service”.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC noted that the unfolding revelations, especially in the oil sector, were too serious to be ignored by a forward-looking administration like Buhari’s.

The statement reads: “Some people have insinuated that the Buhari Administration should ignore the massive looting of our patrimony and move on. We say no responsible government can afford to do that, because it will amount to endorsing corruption and impunity.”

“In the oil sector alone, billions of dollars have been skimmed off by pathologically-corrupt public officials,” the party said, wondering how the government can meet its obligations to the citizens if it refuses to recover the huge funds stolen by officials.

The APC went on: “It is an irony that those who are suggesting that the Buhari administration should turn a blind eye to the incomprehensible looting are the same ones accusing the government of not doing anything.

“It is even a cruel irony that the same party that presided over what is fast emerging as the worst governance in the history of our country is the same one that is daily bad-mouthing an Administration that is cleaning up its mess.

“Even if all the acts of corruption that were perpetrated during the tenure of the last administration are limited to what is now in the public domain, it is still absolutely exigent for the Buhari Administration to do all it can to bring the perpetrators to book and recover the looted funds.

“Where does one start from? Is it the fact that the NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) failed to remit N3.8 trillion to the Federation Account or the mind-blowing stealing of 250,000 barrels of crude oil per day?

“Is it the fact that the NNPC itself does not know how many bank accounts it had or into which ones the payments for Nigerian crude are made? Could anyone have imagined that a government minister would steal the unprecedentedly huge amount of $6 billion of public funds as being alleged?

“How does any sane person rationalise the fact that one billion dollars was unilaterally and illegally withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account just because, as the immediate past minister of Finance has disclosed, the President ordered the withdrawal? What about the billions of naira waivers recklessly approved to dubious importers by the Jonathan administration?

“Is it not clear now that the stealing and the profligacy – more than anything else, including the fall in oil price – helped to drastically reduce the monthly allocation from the Federation Account from about N800 billion to about N400 billion, thus pauperising the states and the local governments and, by extension, the citizenry?

“Against the background of the stunning revelations, what message will any government be sending to its citizens and indeed the global community by looking the other way, when it could still recover some of the looted funds for the benefit of the people? This is why we are supporting the Buhari administration’s probe decision, and calling on all Nigerians to support ongoing efforts to get to the root of the matter.”

The ruling party noted that the refusal of the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration to pass its handover note to the then president-in-waiting was deliberate.

“The Jonathan administration cleverly delayed giving the then incoming Buhari government the handover note so as to avoid being asked critical questions pertaining to the unprecedented looting under its watch,” the party said.

  • PDP backs Buhari’s anti graft campaign

PDP backs Buhari’s anti graft campaign

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti corruption campaign, but stated however that due process must be followed in the fight against corruption.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the party warned against using the campaign as a guise to victimise innocent citizens and curtail the freedom of Nigerians.

The PDP said the clarification became necessary in order to remove any misconception that the party was against Buhari’s decision to probe some past government officials, who are mainly members of the PDP.

The statement said, “The PDP supports the decision of the Federal Government to fight corruption in our country. However, we make bold to state that it should not be used as a guise to victimise innocent citizens.

“Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria and no citizen, irrespective of political, religious or ethnic affiliation should be denied access to due process and the rule of law in the process.

“In the same vein, we want to state categorically that the anti-corruption war, whilst targeted at the immediate past administration, should not by any means be blind to the impunity of the present leaders of the country either in terms of borrowing and spending without recourse to the statutory arms and organs of government and dictates of transparency and accountability, or in terms of nepotism in appointments in key institutions such as INEC and the DSS.

“The anti-corruption effort must not be blind to the corrupting of the security system resulting in the intrusion by over-zealous operatives on issues bordering purely on politics, the hounding, arrest and detention of Resident Electoral Officers and members of election tribunals in Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and other PDP states.”

  • PDP denies authorship of petition against Saraki’s wife

PDP denies authorship of petition against Saraki’s wife

Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday denied the authorship of a petition purportedly sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which warranted the invitation of Senate President’s wife, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, by the anti-graft agency.

Mrs. Saraki is billed to appear before the investigative body today.

Last week, similar development occurred after a statement purportedly issued by the party accusing the state government of not releasing its share of the bailout money to workers.

The party’s spokesperson, Rex Olawoye, whose name was appended on the statement, had disowned it and warned reporters against falling victims of those he claimed were using the party for selfish reasons.

Again, the media was awash yesterday with a statement credited to Olawoye with PDP claiming responsibility for the invitation based on a petition the party had purportedly written against the former Kwara State First Lady.

But a statement jointly by the state party chairman, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo, and Olawoye dissociated themselves and the party from the statement.

They said the party had not written any petition against Mrs. Saraki to the EFCC.

The statement reads: “The attention of our party, PDP, Kwara State chapter, has been drawn to a report by an online medium and newspapers titled: ‘PDP claims responsibility for Toyin Saraki’s EFCC ordeal’, and credited to our spokesman, Chief Rex Olawoye.”First, Kwara State PDP dissociates itself from the said publications. The publication is the handiwork of dubious, desperate, faceless and spineless individuals or groups, who are always in the mass and social media to malign characters and damage their superiors in order to gain cheap popularity.

“We want  to put it on record that Kwara PDP has never, at any time, written any petition against anybody in the state as far as the party is concerned. Kwara PDP has no hand in the imbroglio that is going on between the EFCC and Mrs. Toyin Saraki. We therefore emphatically state that all the statements credited to Kwara PDP are products/mechnisations of people who are disgruntled as well as spineless cowards.

“Kwara PDP views the publication credited to the party as being politically motivated and emanating from those who have issues with the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and his immediate family.”

  • Kogi: Wada, a significant risk for PDP

Since 1999, for many citizens of Kogi State, stasis has been a constant denominator in most actions of all its past leaders in government.  From Governor Audu Abubakar to Ibrahim Idris and now, Idris Wada, nothing seems to have changed.  The leadership of the state have been clouded by allegations of corruption and poor performance.

The November governorship election therefore presents a fresh opportunity and high possibility for the revival of the fortunes of the state provided a set of quality leadership is introduced into Kogi politics.

Luckily, for Kogi citizens, the problem and pains of having an Audu Abubakar as their next governor seems delightfully settled. This is so because the present political power tussle in the Kogi APC makes it very unlikely that an Audu Abubakar will emerge victorious against the wishes of many party heavy weights that are assumed to have already taken their case to the ears of President Muhammadu Buhari, a no nonsense man on corruption.

Presently, the expectation is that President Buhari will neither be too deaf nor blind to the long list of Audu Abubakar’s alleged past atrocities. Already, the red signals from the National leadership of APC are pointing towards Audu Abubakar’s direction in line with President Buhari’s recent declaration to the world that his fight against corruption is not a respecter of political affiliation.

On the other side of the political divide, is the incommodious intention of the incumbent governor, Idris Wada to seek a second tenure under the PDP. The reality on ground reveals that Wada’s desperation for a second term in office has already given rise to a revolt within the PDP as witnessed by the cancellation of the conducted state PDP ward congress which he was accused of manipulating and most recently, the imposition of his ‘men’ in the rescheduled election under the watchful eyes of Olisa Metuh – the National Publicity secretary of the PDP.

Within the PDP party and in general, the Kogi electorate, Governor Idris Wada seems to have lost on both fronts. Recently, he has come under intense criticism from majority of Kogi citizens due to his compromised credibility and underperformance rating in governance. All these negative attributes have combined to be huge minus for his aspiration and the desires of Kogi people. Even though Wada and his inner circle have made various efforts to project him as a viable candidate in the elections, unfortunately, scandals being churned out on him appear endless and attempts by his lean supporters in the PDP to protect him from criticisms have not been  successful because  the voices of his critics appear to have grown too loud to be subdued and the facts in their hands on Wada’s inappropriateness cum mismanagement are enough to send even a strong politician to the gulag or political oblivion.

To many analysts, Wada has not succeeded in providing appropriate leadership in both government and his party. Specifically, at the party level, under Wada the PDP has been fractured. In fact, since the elections of 2011which ushered him into office, a lot of PDP members have left the party because they felt aggrieved by his imposition on them and many more are still questioning whether they should leave the party if Wada gets the PDP ticket for the November poll. Indeed, if this happens, it will be a very deep dilemma for the PDP. As such, with Wada, it has become obvious that PDP has a very scary prospect in the forthcoming governorship election. Furthermore, the ousting of major PDP members from their seats at the National Assembly in the last 2015 general elections has been the lowest point and stark moment of failure for the PDP under Wada. Again, at the state level, in many respects, Governor Wada has failed and his inability to sustain the confidence of the

Kogi people has also become a major problem for his leadership of the state. Thus, Wada’s continued stay in office will be akin to keeping a Captain that is taking its passengers to a crash destination. This is where many focused analysts believe that the eyes of the national leadership of PDP must be opened to the retrogressive purported decision of making Wada its candidate in the November election, otherwise, the party will be doomed.

Contrastingly, in the past few months, Wada’s priority in the state has been on his political survival through the use of the state PDP structure and enforcers to manipulate the upcoming primaries rather than focusing on the implementation of projects that will reverse his unpopularity in the state. At the party level he seems to have made considerable inroad by installing his cronies in various party leadership positions. However, with a bad record card of governance under the PDP, the ready question herein is of what worth will another PDP governorship ticket be in hands Wada? For many sympathizers of the Kogi PDP, removing Wada on the contenders list is the most credible option because the governorship contest in Kogi State is beyond just producing a candidate from a party but more about projecting the candidate of choice.

A quick recall of history shows that in the past three years, Idris Wada has made headlines in the media for all the negative reasons and there is no indication that his continued occupancy of the highest political position in Kogi State will restore normalcy, hope and appropriate life for Kogi citizens. Any other choice aside asking Wada to step down will spell doom for the PDP because it will be a mountainous task to convince the majority of Kogi voters that PDP means well for them with Wada on the ballot.  Simply put, politics of party destruction leaves the individual with no platform and the PDP cannot afford to hang on to any form of mediocrity that will give room to chances of losing such an important election. Wada has shown that he neither understands politics properly nor does he have capacity for proper governance. So where lies his potentials for good governance? A PDP governorship ticket to Idris Wada will further split the party and guarantee a bleak future as it will have a very long grim journey to comeback as a viable political party after a highly predictable electoral loss.

For the greater good of the Kogi people, the best advice for the PDP is to pressure Wada to relinquish power and allow someone else that is competent and popular to take over in order to rebuild a united and peaceful party. This may even provide a very good soft landing for Governor Idris Wada as he will still be accorded a leadership status in the party and by extension in the state.  In all, the selection of a next Kogi State governor will depend more on voters’ choice than party sentiments and impunity. Nevertheless, the final decider remains God.

‘Any other choice aside asking Wada to step down will spell doom for the PDP because it will be a mountainous task to convince the majority of Kogi voters that PDP means well for them with Wada on the ballot’

‘PDP, APC spent N3.23b on adverts for presidential poll’

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Party (APC) spent N3.23 billion on political campaign advertisements for this year’s general elections, according to a report at the weekend.

According to the report by Compliance and Content Monitoring Ltd (CCM), the PDP accounted for about N2.5 billion (77 per cent of the total spending) and APC spent N728 million (23 per cent).

CCM said the media advertisements were placed on radio, television, press and billboards for the PDP and the APC presidential campaigns between December 2014 and March.

The report was unveiled after a thorough analysis of over 260 broadcast media (radio and television), 48 print (newspapers and magazines) media and over 1,000 outdoor billboards across the country.

The firm focused on the two main parties, taking into cognisance the nation’s geographical zones, the advertising campaigns of the different political parties, individuals and groups in support of the presidential candidates.

The Managing Director of CCM Limited, Mr. Tunde Onadele, who spoke at the unveiling of the report, said about 253 creative materials were deployed across radio and television channels in all the 260+ stations monitored by CCM, with PDP utilising 145 materials. APC deployed 107 materials.

The split across media platforms showed that the two parties utilised mostly television and press platforms for over 85 per cent of total campaign spending.

The report highlighted that gross media rates were used in CCM’s calculations and the data across the monitored stations account for about 85 per cent of the national coverage.
