JUST IN: Rivers PDP NASS caucus endorses Tinubu’s re-election in 2027

Members of the Rivers Caucus in the National Assembly have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The caucus, which comprises two senators and seven House of Representatives members, all of whom are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged other aspirants to shelve their ambitions, stating that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda remains “the surest path to Nigeria’s prosperity and progress.”

In a statement read by Senator Barry Mpigi on Saturday in Port Harcourt signed by all members, the Rivers NASS Caucus said their decision was informed by the visible successes of the Tinubu administration, which they described as “working and on course.”

The lawmakers praised Tinubu’s economic policies, saying they are targeted at repositioning the nation’s struggling economy.

The statement reads:“We, the members of the National Assembly from Rivers State, comprising Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his trust and confidence in our leader, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, following his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. We are gladdened by the President’s public acknowledgement and commendation of the exceptional performance of the Minister of FCT, whom he described as the ‘Master of Infrastructure.’”

Reflecting on the economic situation Tinubu inherited, they noted: “Now, having carefully reviewed the President’s economic policies which are targeted at repositioning our once moribund economy through his Renewed Hope Agenda, and taking into account the massive rot and decadence he inherited on the 29th of May, 2023—including our unenviable debt profile and the terrible inflationary figures occasioned by the printing of N22.7 trillion by the Central Bank of Nigeria through Ways and Means overdraft for the Federal Government between 2015 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“And the near-absence of critical infrastructure to support food production; we have come to the conclusion that the President’s economic plan is the surest way out of our country’s social and economic morass. Further, our assessment is firm that the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda is very much on track with already visible results and a credible basis that offers greater improvement in the economic wellbeing of Nigerians if given the necessary time. Still, we are convinced that the declining inflation figures, the substantial reduction in our foreign debt profile, and an IMF-backed promising growth figure all bode well for the economy in the years ahead.”

The lawmakers also commended Tinubu’s swift intervention in the political crisis that rocked Rivers State, describing it as a move that “has set the process of peace in motion, even as we pray and hope to see a clear path to an enduring peace built on sincerity of purpose.”

“We worked assiduously under the leadership of Nyesom Wike for the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And we were victorious in that assignment.”

Reaffirming their commitment ahead of the next general election, they said:

“As members of the National Assembly from Rivers State, we declare unequivocally our unconditional resolve to work again for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027.

“As legislators who are closest to the people, we shall begin the mother of all mobilizations of our people to repeat in greater measure what we did in 2023 in order to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Finally, we call on all Nigerians to support the consolidation of the Renewed Hope Agenda as the surest panacea for the prosperity and progress of Nigeria. And, in this connection, we appeal to would-be presidential candidates, especially those with desperate and never-ending presidential ambitions, to jettison such ambition and rally round our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) in 2027.”

The nine caucus members are Senator Barry Mpigi, Senator Allwell Onyesoh, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, Solomon Bob, Hon. Felix Nwaeke, Hon. Kelechi Nwogu, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, and Blessing Amadi.

Damagum: Delta defections shocking, painful to PDP

    • More governors to join APC, says Ganduje
    • Party chair receives NNPP senator, others

The defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other key Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is shocking and painful, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum said yesterday.

Acknowledging the decimation of the chapter, he said the PDP’s fate is in God’s hands.

Damagum said to fill the vacuum, the PDP leadership would immediately set up a caretaker committee to steer the affairs of the Delta chapter.

He spoke on the defection at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, shortly before the presentation of Certificate of Return to Jude Ezenwafor, the party’s candidate for the November 8 Anambra State governorship election.

Apart from Oborevwori, key PDP leaders who defected to APC in Delta include Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Senator James Manager, House of Assembly Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, other state and federal lawmakers, commissioners, local government chairmen and councillors.

Yesterday, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who welcomed Oborevwori to APC, hinted that more PDP governors would defect to the ruling party.

Also, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inclusive and engaging style attracts more people to the APC.

But, former Senate President Bukola Saraki said there was no cause for alarm. He rallied members to reposition the PDP as a credible alternative platform.

Lamenting the defections, Damagum said: “It’s a decision takn by them, but the pains will remain with us, not because of anything, but because we have given Delta State all our support, from the emergence of the governor to the support for his predecessor, who also doubled as our Vice presidential candidate.

“I think we have done it all for them in Delta State, and we least expected this action from them.”

Damagum, who was accompanied by the acting National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, the National Legal Adviser, Alhaji Kamaldeen Ajibade, and the National Organising Secretary, Captain Bature Umar (rtd), said APC has started deploying its tactics.

He said: “You may have your own tactics, but you cannot outplay God. We leave our faith in the hands of God, and we believe He will help us out of this great situation.”

Damagum urged party members to guard their loins against threats to the 2027 general elections.

He said: “I know that Nigerians are eager to hear from us about what happened to the PDP in Delta state.

“It is very sad and unfortunate because, to me, if there is any state that should think that way, it should not have been Delta, because the party has been very magnanimous to them.

“But I thank God that they have not said that the party did anything wrong to them other than good.

“This is a party that has seen more than that, but it is still standing, and I want to use this opportunity to say, we’ll take over our structures immediately by setting up a caretaker team. We are still taking stock, and we will do that immediately.”

Damagum added: “I want to remind us about what happened in 2023: the PDP can still make it.

“Peter Obi had no governor, but he muscled those votes that he muscled.

“So, this election in 2027 will not be about how many governors you have or how many leaders; it’s about Tinubu versus Nigerians and they will give him the result before noon on voting day because you can coerce, persuade, and intimidate our members to support you, but the ordinary man is feeling the pinch and the decision is his.

“I want to urge all of us to close ranks and rescue ourselves from this hardship that is inflicted on us by design, not by any coincidence.

“Policies are meant for people, not animals. But they made policies that are not yielding good results for the ordinary people.”

PDP will win Anambra, says Ezenwafor

Ezenwafor, accompanied by his wife, members of the Anambra State Working Committee and his campaign team, said he would return home to consolidate and win the governorship election.

He said governors from other states would soon be coming to learn governance strategies from his exemplary leadership in Anambra.

Ezenwafor said: “After my election, all other governors will come and take lessons, especially on security. As a former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, I will not take things for granted.”

More governors will defect, says Ganduje

Ganduje said more PDP governors would defect to the APC, adding that the 2027 general election is a done deal for the ruling party.

He spoke at his residence in Abuja, where he received some Kano State New Nigeria Peoples Party  (NNPP) chieftains, led by Senator Kawu Sumaila and former Secretary to Kano State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, who defected to the APC.

Ganduje said: “In APC, we believe in President Tinubu. We believe in his economic reforms and his Renewed Hope, part of which is trying to canvass for more followership in the party.

“We started by democratically electing governors, especially in Edo State, which was under the PDP. We contested, and we succeeded in winning the election. The state is now under the APC.

“Now, there is another channel that has been opened through advocacy, through dialogue, through convincing some highly-placed and even elected governors to come into the party. And you can see what has happened.

“The governor of Delta is now in APC, including his cabinet, all the members of the state Assembly and House of Representatives, and the timber and calibre of PDP, even the former vice presidential candidate.

“So, you can see that we are expanding. I don’t want to reveal our secret, but what I’m telling you is that for APC,  2027 is a done deal.”

He insisted that more PDP governors would switch to APC, adding that the ruling party would win the proposed off-season elections.

Sumaila said the defectors have pledged to work for the success of the APC in Kano and at the national level.

Other defectors are Kabiru Alhasan Rurmum (Rano/Kibiya), Abdullahi Sani Rogo, Zubairu Massu,  Mohd Digol, Abbas S. Abbas, Sha’aban Lawal, Badamasi Danbatta, and Idris Dankuwa.

Tinubu’s style attracting defectors, says Sule

Sule, who hailed the gale of defections, attributed it to President Tinubu’s inclusive and engaging style.

The governor, who spoke on television, said the APC has more appeal because of the reform agenda of the administration.

He said: “You have a lot of people who have shown interest, even among the governors, who are coming into the APC.”

Sule stressed that the ongoing shift is not merely borne out of a political calculation, but a response to Tinubu’s leadership approach, which has created a sense of belonging among Nigerians.

He said: “When we are meeting with the president, you see the excitement among them. They feel accepted by this president, and they like him.”

Sule said the defection is an acknowledgement of the reforms and the kind of leadership being offered by the Tinubu-led administration.

Lukman: Governors’ defection won’t affect coalition talks

A former APC-NWC member, Salihu Lukman, said the gale of defections to the ruling party will not affect the coalition talks.

He said the beauty of democracy is about competition, adding that the purpose of the coalition is to ensure that in 2027, Nigerians are presented with options.

Lukman told reporters in Abuja: “We have gone far, and what has happened in terms of some governors and some leaders moving into APC is not going to distract us at all.

“Not long from now, the full details of the coalition will be unveiled to Nigerians. And the structure and the strategy in terms of how the election will be contested will be clarified.

“When the PDP governors issued a statement against the coalition, our response was that many of them are working for Asiwaju, and shortly after that, you saw the statement from the Akwa Ibom State governor, and of course, the Delta governor.

“Many more are expected to join the APC. People who genuinely worry for the country are expressing fear about a one-party state.”

He added: “We are not going to produce a new political structure that will be blind or ignorant of the character of politicians. Anybody coming in will be related to, based on their past trajectory.

“So, if truly we want to rescue the country, we are not talking of rescuing the country as just defeating Asiwaju and APC.”

    Saraki: we’ll reposition PDP

Saraki, who said he was inundated with calls from members, urged those who wish to leave the PDP to do so now so those who want to stay can concentrate on rebuilding the party.

Warning against a one-party state, he said: “It is in the interest of Nigeria and the survival of our democracy for the opposition to be vibrant and strong enough with the capacity to replace the ruling party at any point.

“Thus, my charge to our party members is that the PDP is merely experiencing a rebirth.

“Those who want to leave the party should go and let those of us remaining have a clear view of who we are talking to and where their political loyalty lies.

“All we need is for those who want to stay back in PDP to show commitment, and we can all work to rebuild the party…

“It is our responsibility as party members to ignore their antics and seize the moment and momentum to make our party stronger and better.”

Saraki, who said it was shocking for the running mate to the standard bearer of a leading party to abandon ship to join the ruling party, added: “Our party members should not lose focus, hope, or the determination to win.

“We should see the current development as a challenge to rebuild and refocus the party. Tomorrow is very bright.”

  • Humpty Dumpty PDP

    Humpty Dumpty PDP

To laugh or to cry — the Titanic PDP sink in Delta?  No shred of doubt: nothing like it before in Nigeria: a state ruling party of 26 years, uprooting itself and throwing itself at the federal ruling party!

The APC is, of course, upbeat and happy.  The PDP, miserable — and rightly so, though many of its bitter members, in coming days, would gripe with sour grapes.

But the political party system?  Not so upbeat. Defections — into any side — is the partisan equivalent of rubbing Peter to pay Paul.  Such hardly powers organic growth, talk less of development, the only way the party system can deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

PDP current Delta debacle!  What past crimes might the PDP have committed to bring such upon itself?

As usual, no tears from Hardball — but just a grim lesson, from history, to the APC too.  During the PDP halcyon days of power, President Olusegun Obasanjo did not blink how he subverted opposition parties.

He suborned the All People’s Party (APP) national chairman as political adviser, at a time APP was the leading opposition party in numbers, if not in sheer dynamism.  That was clearly the forte of the smaller but much more vibrant Alliance for Democracy (AD).  In no time APP ended in PDP’s great tummy!

For daring to make such a row, AD’s fate was corporate death.  After 2003, with PDP poaching some of its National and state assembly legislators, and sending five out of its six South West governors to political Golgotha, AD progressively could not even win sole council chair elections anywhere!

Is that the putative fate now staring PDP in the face?  Not the best of times!  Still, it’s Karma serving the former federal ruling party the cold breakfast it had, with cold relish, served others!

Which is why the APC itself — now all flush with new flesh — must learn from PDP’s pitfall.  Crowing over opposition flank come to swell its ranks is no wiser than the old folly of excited screeches, while PDP subverted others.  Karma’s gate is ever wide open!

The only way to slam shut that gate, and cut the cycle of Karma, is the present ruling party committing  itself anew to the wellbeing of the people.  In truth, mortar for mortar, it has chalked off more accomplishments in 10 years than PDP did in 16.  But such are the present challenges it must work overtime to lift the people.

No sympathy for PDP for ending up in own dug pit.  But APC must avoid such a future pit too.  Let the people be the exclusive kings and queens of its policies and programmes.

Meanwhile, can all of the king’s horses and all the king’s men put the PDP Humpty Dumpty together again?

Delta APC begins registration of new members amid mass PDP defections

The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the distribution of registration booklets to facilitate the formal onboarding of new members into the party.

This move came in response to a recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, highlighted by the high-profile defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire Delta State PDP structure on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

In an official announcement, the APC directed all Local Government Chairmen to collect the registration booklets—a strategic step towards integrating the influx of defectors.

The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo Esq., underscored the significance of the registration exercise in strengthening the party’s grassroots structure and accommodating the growing number of new entrants.

It reads, “The registration of new members is a crucial step towards ensuring they are fully integrated into the party structure. We encourage all new members to visit their local ward chairmen and complete the registration formalities to formalize their membership.”

The APC leadership also said that the integration of these new members is a key part of the party’s vision for a “brighter future” for Delta state.

With an increasing number of former PDP members joining its ranks, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State is gearing up to consolidate its growing influence ahead of upcoming elections.

APC State Chairman, Omeni Sobotie, has instructed all local government chairmen to report to the APC State Secretariat in Asaba on April 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. to collect registration booklets.

These will be distributed to ward chairmen, who are responsible for issuing official membership cards to the new entrants.

“The surge in membership reflects the rising confidence in our leadership and our message of unity and progress,” the party stated. “These new members will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the APC in Delta State.”

The party further noted that the influx of new members is essential to achieving its vision of “Renewed Hope” for the people of Delta as it positions itself for future political contests.

FULL LIST: Seven sitting Govs who defected from PDP to APC

Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Wednesday, April 23, officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Over the years, several Governors have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while still in office.

Here are seven sitting Governors who defected from PDP to APC

    1. Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta State)

Sheriff Oborevwori shocked many by dumping the PDP for the APC on Wednesday. His defection marks a significant political shift in Delta, a core PDP state since 1999.

    2. Dave Umahi (Ebonyi State)

Umahi defected to APC in November 2020 during his second term as Governor. He cited marginalisation of the Southeast by the PDP and praised APC’s infrastructure focus under President Buhari.

    3. Ben Ayade (Cross River State)

Governor Ayade left PDP for APC in May 2021. He said his decision was driven by a desire to align with the federal government to attract more development projects to Cross River State.

    4. Bello Matawalle (Zamfara State)

Matawalle defected to APC in June 2021. His move followed political turbulence in Zamfara and was seen as a strategic alliance to maintain stability and control.

    5. Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State)

Tambuwal switched from PDP to APC ahead of the 2015 elections, returned to PDP in 2018 and was later linked with a fresh move back to APC while still in office, reflecting his dynamic political positioning.

    6. Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State)

Wamakko joined the APC in 2014 during his tenure as Governor. He was among the early defectors whose moves helped shape the APC’s victory in the 2015 general elections.

    7. Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State)

Ahmed, Governor from 2011 to 2019, defected to APC in 2014 with Bukola Saraki during the famous “political tsunami” in Kwara. Though he returned to PDP later, the defection during his tenure was pivotal.

PDP lawmaker defects to Labour Party in Abia

The ambition of the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to maintain its position as the main opposition suffered a blow on Wednesday, following the resignation of Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, the lawmaker representing Bende North State Constituency.

Bende, located in Abia North Senatorial District, has traditionally been a stronghold for both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2019.

However, the zone is gradually shifting allegiance toward the Labour Party (LP).

Hon. Ibekwe’s defection had been anticipated for days, following reports that he held meetings with Governor Alex Otti, Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, and other lawmakers over a possible move to the LP.

His departure follows similar exits by his colleagues representing Osisioma, Isiala Ngwa North, and South State Constituencies, who also joined the Labour Party in recent weeks.

In a letter to the PDP Ward Chairman in Igbere, Elder Eme Onyekazi, Ibekwe cited internal party crises as his reason for quitting—echoing the same sentiment expressed by other defectors.

Political observers linked the recent wave of defections to Labour Party’s strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, aiming to consolidate its hold on the state assembly and assert legislative dominance.

Attempts to reach the PDP state chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, for comment were unsuccessful.

However, a party member who spoke anonymously claimed the defections were not unexpected.

He described the exits as part of an ongoing internal cleansing aimed at restoring the party’s integrity, stating that those undermining the PDP were choosing to leave.

He maintained that the party remains strong and united.

The source further revealed that some members of the LP and APC have expressed interest in joining the PDP, and would be officially welcomed into the fold in due course.

BREAKING: Delta Governor Oborevwori dumps PDP, defects to APC

Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement came on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba.

Confirming the move, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, said the decision came after “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.”

Governor Oborevwori, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2023, was officially received into the APC by senior party officials.

Political observers have described the move as a major realignment that could reshape the political landscape of Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While Governor Oborevwori has yet to make a public statement on the defection, sources say further details on the rationale behind the move may emerge in the coming days.

  • Coalition: Governors’ resolution divides PDP

    Coalition: Governors’ resolution divides PDP

There is division in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the position of the governors on mergers and coalition.

Instead of weakening their resolve, unfavourable resolutions at the latest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan have only strengthened the tenacity of both Wike and Atiku loyalists towards achieving their aims regarding the PDP National Secretary position and actualisation of a political coalition respectively.

In the PDP Governors’ communiqué, they had sought to derail Atiku loyalists’ move towards an anti-APC coalition by stating that “the Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger” while loyalists of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike whose strength over the PDP National secretariat appeared to be threatened by a resolution that “the PDP Governors Forum resolved to recommend that the Deputy National Secretary acts as National Secretary, pending the nomination and ratification of a Substantive Secretary from the South East Zone and NEC respectively at its next meeting.”

While many groups and individuals supporting the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu have commenced strong mobilization against Anyanwu’s removal, a member of PDP’s National Working Committee, Comrade Timothy Osadolor told The Nation that while he is not a fan of Wike, he believes that at present, his removal on the basis of PDP Governors’ resolution would a serious uphill task.

Osadolor who is also PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader stated that even though he is not a fan of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, while the Supreme Court has taken a stand on the issue of PDP’s National Secretary, all those involved must now realize that anything done in breach of the PDP’s constitution over such an issue cannot stand at all.

“As we speak, the law is clear and the PDP’s constitutional provisions regarding the position of national secretary is also very clear; so, if anyone wants to try remove Senator Sam Anyanwu from the position of National Secretary, I am not his fan but it must be stated that to remove Sam Anyanwu who was elected at a national convention, it is only the PDP’s NEC that can sanction such or give powers to any committee to look into such.

Read Also: JUST IN: PDP sacks Diri-backed Bayelsa SWC

“This is because the constitution of the PDP is very clear – only the NEC can sanction a member of NEC; only the PDP NEC can take disciplinary actions against a NEC member; thus, no power bloc, no forum, no pressure group can override the powers of NEC or the PDP NWC to exercise the powers of NEC.

“If the PDP Governors want Sam Anyanwu removed, I am sure that they know the procedures that must be taken but as we speak, for anybody to be taken out of such position, it has to be done constitutionally,” Osadolor told The Nation.

He also explained that while PDP Governors have taken a stand on the issue of a 2027 political coalition, the prevalent concern of party members is to ensure that PDP – as Nigeria’s largest opposition party – plays the leading or central role-playing in such arrangements without subsuming its identity or having its name altered.

“Firstly, the PDP is not averse to the idea of a political coalition; what we are saying and what we are insisting on is that we are the bigger partner for any such thing and therefore, our brand name must remain intact; so any party or parties that wishes to work with the PDP in a coalition can chose to either keep their identity or subsume it under that of the PDP but clearly, the PDP must take the lead role in any such coalition arrangement.

“We will not say that because we are doing coalition, PD will now allow itself to be turned into PDSP or PDRC; what we are asserting is that we will take the superior position, the pride of place in any coalition talk – that is our position,” Osadolor stated.

However, in response to The Nation’s enquiries from the Atiku camp, the spokesman of Atiku Media Office, Mr. Paul Ibe emphasized that the on-going moves towards actualising a political coalition is a moving train that goes way beyond any political party of individual.

Said Paul Ibe: “We respect the position of PDP governors; governors are major stakeholders in any political party, not just the PDP but the biggest stakeholders in any political party are Nigerians, Nigerians are clear about the direction they want to go, they want to end this government, they want to rebuild this country and to do that, they have to reclaim it first.

“So, the coalition presents Nigerians with a vehicle and this is not just about Atiku Abubakar; he and other political leaders who are involved in this are just the tools towards achieving an end; this (coalition) is all about Nigeria; they have looked at it and seen that without it, we are on a journey to nowhere.

“It is still early but there would be alignments and realignments; twenty-four hours is a long time in politics and when the train gets going, some of the governors would probably meet it at one of the multiple stations.

“Alhaji Atiku has recently said it that when it comes to 2027 (elections), he has not made a determination; when the man himself has not gotten to that point, it would be mischievous of anyone to suggest such but the people who do that are those who want to truncate, to derail this train and its focus.

“The focus of Atiku Abubakar right now is to ensure the birth of the coalition, to join hands with men and women of goodwill – with patriots to nurture that coalition, to ensure that the coalition represents a robust platform for disengaging the APC administration,” Paul Ibe stated.

Southsouth PDP sacks Edo caretaker committee as Aziegbemi, others kick

The Chief Dan Orbih-led Southsouth Zonal Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissolved the Dr. Tony Aziegbemi-led PDP caretaker committee in Edo State, replacing Aziegbemi with Mr. Nosa Ogieva.

Chief Sunny Okomayin has been appointed as Vice Chairman, while Hillary Otsu will continue as Secretary. Bob-Manuel Umoru replaces Chris Nehikhare as the new Publicity Secretary.

Additionally, the PDP Southsouth leadership dissolved the state working committee in Bayelsa and appointed new replacements for both states for a three-month period.

The announcements were made by the PDP Southsouth Zonal Publicity Secretary, Prince Etim Isong, following a regular meeting held at the zonal secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Isong said: “The decision to set up caretaker committees for both states follows the dissolution of the State Working Committee of Bayelsa State and the Caretaker Committee in Edo State on account of various acts of gross misconduct by the dissolved executives, which are in clear breach of the party’s constitution, the poor performance and woeful outing by the party in Edo State at the last governorship election, and the poor handling of internal crisis rocking the party in both states.

“The zonal working committee took these decisions in the best interest of the party, after a careful review of the activities of the party in both states, in line with the Constitution of the party, as amended in 2017, particularly Articles 10(1),(f), (g),(k), and (4) as well as Articles 26(2), (a), 27(2)(a&b), 58(1),(a), (c), 0),(), and 59(1)(f).

“The zonal working committee hopes that this bold move will strengthen the party’s foundation and ensure effective leadership in both Bayelsa and Edo States.”

PDP’s National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Chief Dan Orbih, also called for unity and discipline within the party, while he advised the newly-appointed party leaders to pursue genuine reconciliation among members, so as to foster the cohesion necessary for repositioning the party for future political successes in both states.

Edo PDP caretaker committee publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, however, dismissed the claim by Orbih and his “illegal” zonal executive that Edo caretaker committee had been dissolved, while insisting that the Dr. Tony Aziegbemi-led caretaker committee was still in charge of the party’s affairs in Edo.

Nehikhare, who is Edo state’s immediate Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, while addressing reporters in Benin, declared that Orbih, a former Edo chairman of PDP, had no authority to sack any executive, with his statement having no validation, while alleging that the zonal chairman was running the All Progressives Congress (APC) arm of PDP.

Edo PDP caretaker committee publicity secretary said: “Only the national body of our party has the authority and constitutional power to set up caretaker committees.

“It is the National Working Committee/the National Executive Committee that organises congresses from the ward to the state and local government to the zonal and the national convention.”

Nehikhare also stated that PDP’s congress had not been held in the Southsouth zone to unveil the new party executive.

He said: “What we have in the Southsouth zone is a caretaker committee, headed by Emmanuel Ogidi and not Dan Orbih.

“Orbih is now in the APC, following his unsolicited praises for the APC-led government in Edo State.”

Edo PDP caretaker committee publicity secretary also urged the teeming members of the party in the state to remain calm and law-abiding.
