‘Ondo PDP exco has not resigned’

The Ebenezer Alabi-led Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State said yesterday that it has not resigned.

A statement by the PDP Publicity Director, Ayo Fadaka, said: “It has come to our notice that there is a rumour that the PDP State Executive in Ondo State under the chairmanship of Ebenezer Alabi has resigned.

“This is not true and indeed a mischief calculated to embarrass and destroy the party. Therefore, we want to reiterate most emphatically that the executive is still in office and not in any manner whatsoever contemplating to resign.

“Indeed there is no reason, compelling or otherwise, that will dictate that course of action either now or in the immediate future.

“We continue to remain focus in our commitment to the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan and also to reinforce internal democracy in the Ondo State chapter, it is an ideal we are ready to pursue to logical conclusion.

“We equally want to advise the media to be wary of false news that emanate from our state; it is a game being played by a desperate group.”

    Niger governor meets women aspirant

No fewer than 14 women are vying for the tickets of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State for various elective offices in next year’s election.

This issue was highlighted recently when the female aspirants visited Governor Mu’azu Babanagida Aliyu in Minna, the state capital.

They are contesting for legislative offices at the national and state assemblies.

In response, the governor commended the bravery of the women for seeking for elective offices in the face of all odds.

Aliyu who was happy at the turn out of women for elective offices in the next general elections stressed that the involvement of more women in politics and governance would help to promote girl child education, ensure gender balance and reduce negative impression against women in the society generally.

He noted that women have done very well in his administration since

2007 and that those who have served as ministers since he assumed office as governor have made the state proud.

He also lauded the achievements of women in his cabinet.

The governor then expressed optimism that the 14 women will compete favourably well in the primaries and at the polls, saying they are qualified academically and administratively to occupy elective positions of their choice.

The leader of the female aspirants, Hajiya Hauwa Usman thanked the governor for assisting women in the state actualize their ambitions.

She said the present administration has recorded the highest number of women in sensitive positions since the state was created.

  • Tension in Bayelsa as Brass insists on PDP Rep’s ticket

Tension in Bayelsa as Brass insists on PDP Rep’s ticket

There was confusion yesterday among Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

They insisted on producing the Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency’ candidate of the party in the National Assembly primaries.

It was learnt that their agitation for the party’s ticket created panic among other PDP stakeholders in the Bayelsa East Senatorial District.

The senatorial district comprises Nembe, Brass and Ogbia local government areas.

But the stakeholders, under the aegis of Peoples Front for Good Governance (PFGG), said they had been marginalised in the distribution of political offices.

According to them, they will no longer allow the dominance of the Nembe.

The President of the stakeholders, Ebiegberi Edwards, argued that the Nembe Bassambiri had held the House of Representatives slot for 12 years.

He said a charter of equity among members of PDP in the district stipulated that the political position should rotate among Twon Brass and Ogbolomabiri Nembe; Akassa, Okpoama, Okoroma/Tereke; Odioama and Oluasiri Minikesi.

The spokesman said the position had somewhat become “the birthright” of the people of Nembe Bassambiri.

Edwards said the occupant of the seat, Fonigha Jephthah, who hails from Nembe, should allow their candidate, Ateki Joseph, from Brass.

The spokesman said Joseph had promised to bring articulate, focused, competent and intelligent representation to the people.

He said: “The selfish interest of individual members of the party is about to destroy the good work of Governor Dickson in the federal constituency.

“We won’t allow any attempt to impose a candidate on us in the forthcoming National Assembly elections. We are calling on the leadership of the PDP at the national level and in Bayelsa State to address the imbalance in the political equation of the area.

“This is the only way justice and fairness can be guaranteed during the 2015 Assembly elections in the state.

“It is illogical and ill-conceived to ask Brass Local Government Area to relinquish its rights – politically – in this present dispensation, having supported other areas in the constituency since 1999.

“Those who want Brass to be marginalised are bias towards Brass, especially after they have benefitted from the same supposed zoning arrangement to become members of either the Senate or House of Representatives over the years.

“Nembe Bassambiri has held the House of Representatives’ seat cumulatively for 12 years of three tenures with different people for a position that is supposed to rotate among Twon Brass and Ogbolomabiri Nembe, Akassa, Okpoama, Okoroma Tereke, Odioama, Oluasiri Minikesi, among others.

“We are crying to our governor and imploring him to intervene to avert a looming crisis in the area.

“Nembe Bassambiri has had the Representatives’ seat for four tenures, with each person serving one term while Brass has had it for one single term through Akassa.

“Therefore, it is only natural that the House of Representatives seat, which ordinarily should rotate between Nembe and Brass, should come to Brass this time round.

“In the midst of the controversies, one person, who has kept calm and focused on building on the good work of the present administration, is Ateki Joseph. He has promised to bring articulate, focused, competent and intelligent representation to the people.

“He has successfully been cleared to contest the PDP primaries against the incumbent Foingha Jephthah. Joseph is a young, brilliant London-trained lawyer.

He is well informed, visionary and focused. He has not been tainted in all the political imbroglios happening in the state.

“He is close to the youths and all the stakeholders seem to prefer him over and above the incumbent who they say has not done anything for them in all these years.”

  • I’ll transform Rivers, says Wike

    I’ll transform Rivers, says Wike

Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has promised to transform the state and improve the living conditions of the people, if he wins next year’s election.

The former Minister of State for Education spoke yesterday in Bonny when he met PDP delegates, inaugurated the New Rivers Vision office and addressed party stakeholders at an open forum.

He promised to redefine development in the state by diligently ensuring infrastructural development of the 23 local government areas, by pursuing human capital development and enhancing mass participation in governance.

Wike urged Bonny residents to demand accountability from their children serving in the present administration.

He said: “We must begin to ask those serving with the present administration what they have done with the enormous resources at their disposal.

“I urge Bonny delegates to vote me on December 8 during the PDP governorship primary and vote me during the governorship election. We have to change the fortunes of Rivers State. The people of Bonny know my pedigree as a performer. I intend to build on my wonderful performance in the past.”

The former minister of state reminded the Bonny Kingdom that when he was serving the Federal Government, he facilitated the setting up of Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas in the area, following the approval of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Wike added that several other projects were attracted to the basic education sector in the kingdom when he was in officce.

Bonny Local Government Area PDP Chairman Simon Hart said the party’s delegates would vote for Wike on December 8.

A former Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Prof Ndi Okereke-Onyuike, who is the leader of Bonny PDP delegates, said the delegates would vote for Wike.

A former Bonny Local Government Area Chairman Brodaford Long-John said the decision to support Wike stemmed from the need to further develop the state and enhance the integration of the people.

  • Court grants PDP permission to move against Tambuwal

Court grants PDP permission to move against Tambuwal

A Federal High Court in Abuja has given permission to the People’s Democratic Party to apply for a mandatory order compelling either the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives to declare vacant the Kebbe/Tambuwal seat being held by Aminu Tambuwal following his defection to the All Progressive Congress.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in an ex-parte ruling on Monday granted the PDP “leave to apply, by way of judicial review, for an order of mandamus compelling the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives to give effect to the provisions of Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution by declaring the Kebbe/Tambuwal federal Constituency seat vacant.”

The ruling was on one of two ex-parte motions filed by the PDP pursuant to order 34 Rule 3 of the Federal High Court (Civil procedure) Rules 2009. By the leave granted it, the PDP is now required to file a formal suit to achieve its aim.

Named as respondents in the motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/901/2014 are – Tambuwal and Emeka Ihedioha, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

On Monday, PDP’s lawyer, Mike Ahamba (SAN), while moving the motion for leave to apply for an order of mandamus, said by its action, his client only wants whoever occupies the seat of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps to perform his/her responsibility under the Constitution.

“Section 68(2) renders section 68(1) (g) non-self-operating. Where a person defects from his party, the person can defiantly stay in the House and maintain his seat until either the Speaker or the Senate President performs his responsibilities under Section 68(2).

“We are asking the Speaker to declare the seat of Kebbe/Tambuwal Constituency vacant following the defection of the 2nd respondent (Tambuwal),” Ahamba said.

He said the PDP will also apply for “an order of injunction restraining the 2nd defendant (Tambuwal) from performing or continuing to perform the functions of the 1st respondent in the House of Representatives, or sitting or continuing to sit in the House as a member consequent upon the order of mandamus.”

  • ‘Yobe PDP needs rescue operation’

    ‘Yobe PDP needs rescue operation’

Yobe State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have said that the chapter needs a rescue operation to survive.

They alleged that its arrowhead and Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Abdul Bulama, is not offering an effective leadership.

The youths warned that the fortunes of the party would nosedive, unless the state party leader emulate the steps taken by the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, on reconciliation.

The concerned youths, led by Abubakar Adamu, told reporters in Damaturu, the state capital, that Bulama’s attitude is making the ruling APC to garner more support as the fortunes of the PDP continues to diminish.

He said: “I think President Jonathan needs to know that the PDP in Yobe State is into another bad time again. We felt that our minister, who is the leader of the party in the state, will carry everybody along, especially considering the moves by our National Chairman, Adamu Mauzu, to salvage the party. Unfortunately, Dr. Bulama is not a politician and he is not ready to learn from people on ground.

“We want the minister to realise that the party is very important to us and we are committed to working for its success in 2015 with the right leadership. But, Dr. Bulama has so far failed to do this”

Yobe PDP has three factions, which revolve around Adamu Waziri and Yerima Nagama. The third faction comprises of leaders outside the two factions.

However, the minister’s media aide, Hassan Gimba Ahmed, said that his principal is working very hard for victory in next year’s elections.

Gimba said Bulama is forging unity and harmony and carrying all the stakeholders along

He said: “Those accusing Dr. Bulama are not fair to him. The minister is working very hard to ensure electoral victories for the party in Yobe state at all levels. For the first time in the history of the party, the minister hosted a successful stakeholders meeting in Damaturu with all the leaders in attendance.”

  • Rumpus in Bayelsa Assembly over loss of PDP tickets

Confusion has crept into the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, following the inability of many of its members to secure the tickets of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the primaries on Saturday.

It was learnt that so far, about 13 incumbent lawmakers lost their tickets after the primaries characterised by violence, disagreements and allegations of sharp practices.

The primary election, it was observed, was a supremacy fight between the camp of Governor Seriake Dickson and Abuja-based politicians, who attempted to give the party tickets to their loyalists.

It was discovered that most of Dickson’s candidates, who resigned their appointments in his cabinet to contest the primaries, emerged victorious.

It was, however, learnt  that conflicting results emanated from some of the constituencies where the governor’s candidates were declared winners, with others laying claim to the party tickets.

It was gathered that an altercation over an alleged alteration of the delegate list, led to a stalemate in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government.

The election, which was rescheduled for yesterday at the Sports Complex, Yenagoa, was held amid tight security.

    Controversy trails primaries in Imo

    •Aggrieved members to dump party

Hundreds of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Imo State are set to dump the party, following “the shoddy manner the House of Assembly primary election was conducted.”

The aspirants, who rejected the result of the primaries, said it was a deviation from what they were promised by the leaders.

They threatened that they would join forces with the other parties to stop the PDP.

The delegates said the results, which were announced, did not reflect the voting. They called for the cancellation of the exercise.

The primaries could not hold in some local governments, following disagreements among the aspirants and officials.

A delegate in Owerri West, who preferred anonymity, said most of the delegates left in annoyance after waiting for materials from the PDP secretariat.

When our reporter visited the secretariat on Okigwe Road about 5:30 pm, the materials were yet to leave the premises.

The primary election was postponed in Okigwe, Nwangele and Isiala Mbano council areas.
