  • We will monitor Edo LG polls – PDP

Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has said it would monitor the local government elections scheduled to hold on April 20.

It said its candidates were poised to bring transformation agenda to the grassroots.

The state Secretary of the party, Mr. Felix Utubor who stated this in a chat with journalists said they would ensure that the results of the election are declared at the polling units and not at a “collation” centre in Benin City.

Utubor noted that the party believed that Governor Adams Oshiomhole would stand by the one man one vote mantra.

He said, “We are prepared for the elections. We have candidates in all the 192 wards and 18 local government chairmen’s seat.”

“We are going to tell the people to vote for transformation. We want to bring the transformation agenda to them.”

  • ‘PDP not afraid of APC’

    ‘PDP not afraid of APC’

The chairman of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Capt. Tunji Shelle (rtd) has said that the party is not afraid of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He described the merger of the four political parties as a gang-up, adding that it may fizzle out before 2015.

Shelle told our correspondent that the choice of the presidential candidate and running mate will divide the party and make the partners in the alliance to opt out of the merger.

He also said that the proposed party may not be able to resolve the differences that may arive over the adoption of a logo, symbol, party constitution and ideology. Shelle said: “The merger is welcome, if the purpose is to develop Nigeria. But, if the purpose is to hijack power, it will fail. Nigeria is a big country. It is not when a party wins election that will make Nigeria great.

“ACN, CPC, ANPP, and APGA are out for mischieve. PDP is a strong party that cannot be dislodged It is a national party with grassroots appeal. These are regional parties coming together. It is a gang-up that will collapse. It will be very tough for them. They cannot defeat PDP. We are not afraid of the merger”.

The party leader also predicted leadership tussles in the new party, which he said, would result from personality differences.

He said PDP would win more states in 2015, urging the APC leaders to set goals that can be achieved.

Shelle added: “PDP has 23 states now. Others will join the fold. There are moles in the APC. Now, APGA is saying that it is not part of the new party. Many people will desert the party, ahead of 2015. Instead, PDP will continue to wax stronger and swallow the APC”.

  • Why APC will succeed – Shekarau

Why APC will succeed – Shekarau

Former presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Friday said the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last 15 years has helped to strengthen peoples’ faith in the new party – the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Shekarau, who spoke in a chat with journalists in Benin City, said they are waiting for whatever moles the PDP would plant in the merger.

The former Kano State governor said leaders of the various political parties that formed the APC have decided to sacrifice their personal wish for the interest of the nation.

He said the merger was not about any individual or personality but about the Nigeria people and giving the people an alternative.

Shekarau said, “I think to the best of my knowledge and understanding all the people you may think have ambition in all the political parties involved are all ready to sacrifice and play the game of give and take.

“We are waiting for the unexpected and we are planning for it. There is no way you can stop peoples’ ambition in any political party.”

  • PDP greets opposition parties on merger

PDP greets opposition parties on merger

The Peoples Democratic Party has congratulated the opposition political parties for their successful merger and the formation of All Progressives Congress.

In a statement in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, said that PDP as a ruling party and the biggest in West Africa welcomed the development.

Metuh said the action was an indication that the nation’s democracy had come of age and was deepening.

He said that with the formation of the APC, the PDP and Nigerians expected to see robust debates on the economy and other issues of governance in the general interest of the country.

The publicity secretary advised the opposition parties to use the vehicle of their new party to challenge its elected and appointed officers to debate on government projects and achievements.

He said that such debates would benefit Nigerians and enhance the political development of the nation on the long run.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that four major opposition parties – the Congress for Progressive Change, Action Congress of Nigeria, All Progressive Grand Alliance and All Nigeria Peoples Party on Tuesday merged to form the APC.

The PDP spokesman said the party was ready at anytime to debate on the nation’s economy and other issues that would move the nation forward.

He said, “We charge the opposition to use the new party to challenge our elected and appointed officers on debates on issues of governance.

“We are ready, willing and able at any time to debate on any issue pertaining to the economy and any other issue of governance.

“We want useful and constructive debates so that at the end of the day, Nigerians will be the utmost beneficiaries.”

He said that PDP, as a ruling party was committed to the stability and development of the country, and would not dwell on the shortcomings of the merger arrangement.

  • ‘Kalu has not returned to PDP’

‘Kalu has not returned to PDP’

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and Special Adviser to Abia State Governor on Public Relations Mr. James Okpara spoke on the controversial return of the former governor, Orji Kalu, to the party and other issues. AUGUSTINE AVWODE met him.

Former Governor Orji Kalu of Abia State said he has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The state government said he has not returned. Who should the public believe?

The PDP chairman in Abia State, the chairman of PDP in Bende Local Government Area and other party leaders and stakeholders have addressed this matter. Former Governor Orji Kalu is not a bonafide member of the PDP. The party card he is brandishing is fake. It is not genuine. The reasons are very simple and I will enumerate them. First, every ward has its own serial number and the number of Orji Kalu’s purported card is different from the number series allocated to his ward by the party. Second, there is a register of PDP members and Orji Kalu’s name is not in this register. Can you validly be a member of an association without your membership being registered in the register of members?

But the ward chairman of the party and other executive members issued the card. How then can it be fake?

The ward chairman and other executive members who purportedly gave him the card were no longer members of the PDP on the date they gave him the card. Can you give out what you don’t have? In a resolution of November 14, 2012 by members of the Bende PDP, it was unanimously agreed that Orji Kalu shall not be readmitted into the party. The Igbere ward chairman, who purportedly gave him the membership card, attended the meeting and signed the resolution. I should ask you, can you be a member of two different political parties at the same time? Kalu is the founder and owner of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA). Can he be a member of PPA and that of PDP at the same time? The answer is no.

As a lawyer, don’t you think that, by rejecting Kalu’s readmission into PDP, the state government is infringing on his fundamental right or freedom of association?

It is wrong to imply that the rejection of his purported readmission back to PDP is being driven by the state government. It is his own people, those who belong to the same constituency with him that vehemently said no way when rumours were strong that he was planning to come back to PDP. The The stakeholders of the party from Bende have, in at least, two separate occasions, unanimously stated that they do not want Orji Kalu in their party.

We are talking of the freedom of association…

Don’t you think that the freedom of association of 99.9 per cent of PDP members in Bende council area will be breached by the readmission of Orji Kalu into their party? Have you read the resolution of Bende stakeholders on the matter? The Bende PDP members, in their resolution of November 14, 2012, stated that “the constitution and the extant laws of Nigeria recognizes freedom of association. That friendship or association is by choice and not by compulsion, fiat or coercion”. In order words, you cannot force me to be your friend or associate with you. You have the right to say that you want to associate with me, but in the spirit of freedom of association, I have the right to say sorry, I do not want to be your friend or associate with you. Friendship or association should not be by force. And we can say that political association or political friendship shouldn’t be by force.

But why this opposition to a former governor’s desire to return to the party, on which platform he ruled the state for eight years?

During his administration, there was no development in Abia State. Government affairs became a family business. Let Orji Kalu take you round Abia State and point out one thing that he did in his eight years in power. Our people are tired of quarrels and distractions.

But many people will say the present administration has not fared better in terms of developing the state. The refrain is that nothing is happening in Abia.

No, that is not true. Honestly, I am not saying this because I work for Governor Theodore Orji. The governor is doing an excellent work in Abia State . This is one of the distractions we are talking about. Some people have been specifically instructed to run down the governor and his government. Let those who are alleging non-performance by the present administration come to Abia and see things for themselves.

  • Who succeeds Akpabio in 2015?

    Who succeeds Akpabio in 2015?

Politics of succession is in the air in Akwa Ibom State. Who succeeds Governor Godswill Akpabio  in 2015? Correspondent Kazeem Ibrahym writes on the intrigues and underground moves by the governorship aspirants

The political parties are on the track. But the contest for the governorship is actually between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Will PDP maintain its hold on power? Will the ACN displace the party Akwa Ibom State sin 2015?

Governor Godswill Akpabio will leave the State House, Uyo, on May 29, following the expiration of his second term. Ahead of the general elections, alignments and realignments among the politicians have started.

Akwa Ibom State has three senatorial districts; Uyo, Ikot Ekpene and Eket. The late Chief Akpan Isemin, an Etinan, had ruled the state between 1991-1993. But his tenure was aborted by the military intervention in politics. Preceeding his administration was that of Wing Commander Idongesit Nkanga, an Nsit Ibom man, who ruled between 1990 –1991. Both the late Isemin and Nkanga are from Uyo Senatorial District.

Former Governor Victor Attah, who hails from Ibesikpo Asutan, ruled the state from 1999 to 2003. It was during Attah’s time that it was agreed that power should shift to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in the interest of peace, equity and social justice. That was how Akpabio, who hails from Ikot Ekpene, became the governor.

The people of Eket Senatorial District are of the opinion that it is the turn of the zone to produce Akpabio’s successor. But this does not go down well with the people of Uyo Senatorial District, who are of the view that the governorship has never been zoned to any senatorial district in the history of the state. They argued that it has always been an open contest.

Those supporting zoning and those against it are locked in scheming. The Elders Council’ of Uyo Senatorial District led by Otuekong Sunny Udoh is believed to be promoting the governorship ambition of the Secretary to Government, Mr. Umana Umana. It is not clear, if the ambition of the politician has the blessing of the governor.

The elders are relying on historical facts as they forge ahead in their consultations on behalf of Umana. Udoh argued that Isemin contested against the candidates from the three senatorial districts in the Third Republic. He also recalled that, after his emergence as governor, other positions were zoned to the three senatorial districts.

The elders said in a statement: “Former Governor Attah, who was the governor between 1999 and 2003, contested against the candidates from the three senatorial districts. That there was no zoning for the governorship was underscored by the fact that, even within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aspirants from the three senatorial districts were screened and cleared to contest the primaries for the position in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011.

“The current governor, His Excellency, Governor Godswill Akpabio, won the primaries in 2006 and 2011 on his merit, after contesting against the aspirants from the three senatorial districts who were duly cleared by the PDP. Governor Akpabio won the two primaries deservedly and not because the position was zoned to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District. After the emergence of Chief Godswill Akpabio as governor, other positions; Deputy Governor, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Party Chairman;` were zoned, in line with the practice in 1993, 1999 and 2003, to the three senatorial districts. Against the above background, the Elders Council takes serious exception to the statements made by some anti-democratic elements that the governorship in Akwa Ibom State in 2015 will be exclusively zoned to a particular senatorial district.”

But former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Nduese Essien, who is from Eket, disagreed with the elders. He said it is foolhardy for anyone to argue that there are no credible candidates in Eket Senatorial District to run the affairs of the state in 2015.

Essien condemned the anti-zoning elements in the state, stressing that zoning has always characterised PDP’s electoral calculations in the state.

“The zoning arrangement has become a characteristic of PDP. In Akwa Ibom State, the first governor in the democratic dispensation emerged from Uyo Senatorial District. At the end of his second term in office, it was agreed that Uyo Senatorial District was no longer contesting the governorship; that it should go to either Ikot Ekpene or Eket Senatorial District. It was also expected that which ever senatorial district emerged in the 2007 election will stand eliminated from the race in the next round of elections for governor. As it is now, Uyo and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom have had their two terms in office. It automatically stands to reason that only Eket Senatorial District should present a credible candidate for the next round of elections.

“May be, after the forth-coming elections, the best candidate, the best material and the highest bidder may emerge in the subsequent elections in 2015. But for now, the three senatorial districts have to be allowed to have their turns.” Essien said.

In his letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, the National Chairman of Ibom Mandate Assembly, Mr. Iniobong John, who is from Uyo, disagreed with the Uyo Senatorial District’s Elders Council. He said Eket Senatorial District is the only zone that has not produced a governor, since the creation of the state. He explained that the other two zones have enjoyed the slot for 20 years in 2015.

The letter reads in part: “ Eket Senatorial District is the hub of the oil wealth upon which Akwa Ibom and Nigeria is fed and sustained. In spite of the fact that, with 12 local government areas, the largest among the senatorial districts compared to Ikot Ekpene (10) and Uyo (9), Eket Senatorial Discrict and her diverse ethnic groups of Oro, Ibibio, Ekid, Ijaw and others, the zone is systematically subjected to political marginalisation and economic exploitation.”

John quoted Article 7 Section 2, Sub-Section C of the PDP Constitution to support his claim on why Eket must produce the next governor. The section of the PDP Constitution reads: “In pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness, the party shall adhere to the policy of zoning and rotation of party and public elective offices and it shall be enforced by appropriate Executive Committees of the party at all levels.”

“Mr. President, it may interest you to know that, following the recently concluded public hearing on the constitution review held across the country, the overwhelming vote of the people for zoning and power rotation in Akwa Ibom reverberated in all the 10 federal constituencies, the three senatorial districts and even at the state level, where Governor Godswill Akpabio lent his voice in support of rotation of power, publicly acknowledging that, himself is a product of zoning.” John added.

In Akwa Ibom State, 2013 is a mirror of 2015. The various groups are coming up as campaign platforms drawing attention to the aspirations of their sponsors. Observers are of the view that the preparation for the 2015 contest led to the resignation of the former deputy governor, Nsima Ekere, who is believed to be a strong contender for the number one seat. Ekere, who hails from Mkpat Enin, the Ibibio axis of Eket Senatorial District, is banking on zoning to succeed Akpabio.

But Governor Akpabio recently told The Nation that the resignation of Ekere has nothing to do with the governorship tussle. “I don’t think the resignation of the deputy governor has anything to do with 2015. That is my personal opinion. I think it has a lot to do with the personal decision of a public servant who decides to face other things. It really depends on what make you fulfilled as a person. So, I don’t think it has got anything to do with 2015, but there is nothing wrong in reading political connotations into anything that occurs in any political atmosphere. So, I believe strongly that in 2015, Akwa Ibom people are most likely to say let Godswill continue to be done,” he said.

Asked if he is interested in who succeeds him, Akpabio said: “As a citizen of the state, I am definitely interested in ensuring that the tempo of development is not relaxed and I will be very glad, if we can have somebody who will be as passionate and dedicated as the current governor of Akwa Ibom State.”

The governor’s explanation notwithstanding, many people believed that Ekere was almost evicted out of Akpabio’s government before he resigned to avoid any embarrassment.

However, many also believe that the loyalty of Umana to Akpabio would play a key role in deciding who succeeds the governor in 2015. Umana will need to contend with strong forces from Eket Senatorial District, which are shaping the preparations for the battle.

These include Senator Helen Esuene from Eket Senatorial District, Effiong Abia, an Oron man, who is serving as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Okpolupn Etteh from Ibeno, who is the Majority Leader of the House of Assembly; Ambassador Assam Assam, former Attorney General of the state and the Ambassador of Nigeria to Russia, and Jerome Isangiedighi, a member of the House of Assembly representing Oron/Orung Uko.

Observers believe that urgent steps are required by the PDP to address its zoning arrangement and the controversy it has generated to prevent internal chaos that could result in the break down of law and order in the state.

  • ‘PDP will remain in wilderness in Lagos’

‘PDP will remain in wilderness in Lagos’

Lagos State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain Hon. Kayode Tinubu has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will remain in the wilderness in the state beyond the 2015 elections.

He said the threat by the party to capture Lagos is an ampty threat, adding that there is a disconnect between Lagosians and the conservative party.

Tinubu, who spoke with our correspondent, said the poor performance of the PDP federal government has sealed its chance in the Centre of Excellence.

He said: “Their leader has lamented that Lagos PDP is in the wilderness. The party cannot get it right because its foundation is falsehood. PDP is not a party of ideas. They have secured power at the centre, but they don’t know how to use it. Instead of using power for the advancement of the country, it is power that is using them. Democracy seems to have no meaning in Nigeria because PDP has misruled the country”.

Tinubu, a lawyer, lauded the ACN government in the state for fulfilling its promises to the people. He said Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has brought honour and pride to ACN as a model governor in the country.

The chieftain also applauded other ACN governors in the Southwest. He said, despite the financial constraints, they have justified the confidence reposed in them.

Tinubu advised the PDP leaders in the region to forget the idea of bouncing back through rigging, stressing that the people are wiser.

He added: “Lagosians will always vote for the progressive party that has cared for them since the advent of this dispensation. PDP is an abberation in the Southwest and Lagos will always reject the party at the polls”.

  • PDP is afraid of ACN/CPC merger

PDP is afraid of ACN/CPC merger

Senator Domingo Obende represents Edo North District in the Senate. The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain spoke with Musa Odoshimokhe on the ACN/CPC merger and other isues.

The Senate in 2012 was vibrant. What should Nigerians expect from the Upper Chamber this year?

I agree that 2012 was vibrant and every lawmaker was actually involved in whatever we achieved. The reason for the vibrancy was informed by the challenges. As a lawmaker, you should understand what the challenges of this country are. It is only when you have a grasp of this that you will explore avenues of resolving them. This is what we have been doing in the Senate. I believe that the reason for the vibrancy has to do with the fact that I was able to identify problems, even before I became a Senator.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and other parties are involved in merger talks. Do you think this will work?

I believe it is going to work because we are committed to its workability. This is certainly going to succeed because our hopes are high. We would not be distracted by the comments of these people whose past-time is politics of mudslinging. They are agents of provocation and they are scared. They are afraid of the merger. They are worried because they least expect us to be going this far. It is what Nigerians want, they are eager for a change and our union will definitely give Nigerians a new lease of life. We are at the stage of picking a new name and when that is done, there may be fusion. With the new union, we are going to battle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The people are really in high spirits and my party leadership is fully committed to this auspicious relationship. The country has suffered a lot and the people have bled so much. We are going to set agenda for the country and put it back on course. The rudderless direction the country has wandered will end and the people would see a progressive Nigeria when the changes happen. We are concerned about the country. This is the only country we have and we must rescue it from the chagrin of docile party that is short of what to do for the people. Our party and those we are discussing with have the capacity to effect these changes, which the people so urgently desire. I can assure you that we are leaving no stone unturned to achieve this. The talks have advanced and the commitment is equally very high and, by the special grace of God, we are going to win.

The Petroleum Industry Bill has generated controversy. What is the way out?

There is no bill that is sectionalised than the Petroleum Industry Bill. There is no bill brought to the House that will not be deliberated upon and the general interest and the objectives of such bills are the focal points of the deliberations. No narrow interest or sectional interest is entertained when we discuss issues that affect the country. Nigeria is bigger than any individual or any section of the country and the interest of the country is germane to the national survival. This is what provides the lead to every discussion or deliberation that takes place at the House. There is no bill that will be passed without public hearing. Basically, nobody sectionalising any bill. If people have issues, of course, we look at term and make a rationale conclusion. The PIB is very important to the industry and I don’t see any problem in treating it on its merits and serving the purpose for which it is meant to advance. The PIB is in the overall interest of the country and it will surely be done without sentiment.

How are you relating with your constituency?

Edo North people are exceptionally law abiding people. They should expect more development laws that will be in their interest and the over interest of Edo State. To whom much is given, much is expected. The people of Edo North Senatorial District are being carried along and we have ensured that they are not relegated in the scheme of things in this country. My party is a progressive party and it has touched the lives the people. The government in Edo has made tremendous progress. The people of my state are out of Egypt. The promise land is in sight. I am very confident that Governor Adams Oshiomhole will lead them there. The ACN has pointed the way forward; it has brought to the fore the essence of government. The basic necessities of life are within reach and that is the spirit behind a progressive government of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

  • Kalu’s desperation to return to PDP

Kalu’s desperation to return to PDP

Who says leopard can change her colours anymore than a snake can give birth to anything short? The aphorism best describes and captures the recent cowboy show by former governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu when he arranged his allies at his home in Igbere to present to him what he claimed was a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card.

Kalu’s recent show appeared to be the last of his political gimmicks, a desperation to force his way back to PDP, a party he has criticised and destroyed before now, when he was in control of the state resources. Before now, Kalu had made two failed attempts to return to PDP. First was when Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo assumed office as the national chairman of the party and Kalu was losing grip of the government of his state with Governor Theodore Orji’s exit from Progressive Peoples’ Alliance (PPA) which was Kalu’s political party. What Kalu adduced as his reason then was that his return to PDP was in fulfilment of the promise he made to Nwodo that he would return to the party if Nwodo emerged national chairman of the party. After his unsolicited visit to Nwodo at the party national headquarters in Abuja in 2010, the party leadership shut the door against Kalu and his allies. That was how he went and contested the Abia North senatorial election on PPA platform and lost woefully to Senator Uche Chukwumerije of PDP. After the election, Kalu said that he was no longer interested in active politics. It did not take him long to resurface again with another trick under the guise of Njiko Igbo. He shouted to whosoever cared to listen to him that Njiko Igbo is a non-political platform to unite the Igbos ahead 2015 general election, so that Igbo presidency would be actualised. He pretended as if he was not interested in joining any political platform, while it is an open secret that he was busy nurturing his dead empire called PPA.

While the Igbos are keenly waiting to see how far Kalu can unite the Igbos through his Njiko Igbo platform for the actualisation of the Igbo Presidency in 2015, the news of yet another of Kalu’s secret plot to return to PDP through the backdoor broke. Protests by the party major stakeholders in the state to the national leadership of the party nipped the plot in bud and the door was shut against him again. Kalu’s hatchet writers took on the party stakeholders in the state especially Governor Theodore Orji for questioning the plot to re-admit Kalu into the party through the backdoor without consulting them. Some of them in their write-ups in defence of Kalu suggested that he has not told anybody that he wanted to return to PDP; but rather that he was busy with his Njiko Igbo for the unity of the Igbos.

Known for inconsistency, it did not take long for Kalu and his allies to come up with another subterfuge of registering him as PDP member in his house in Igbere. Even the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose was not re-admitted into PDP by being registered in his house, rather he was transparently re-admitted by the national leadership of the party. But the question is why Kalu’s desperation to return to PDP by all means and at the same nurturing PPA for dirty jobs?

It is obvious that he has some tricks up his sleeves that might be detrimental to the party successes in 2015. That is why the party must apply caution and look deep into Kalu’s antics.

Kalu and his allies have been trying to rewrite the PDP history in order to justify his recent moves. This is even when most of the 18 founders of the party who are automatic members of Board of Trustees of the party are still alive. Kalu said that his action was prompted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s resignation as (BoT) Chairman of the party and that his other co-founders of the party have been calling him to return to the party.

Every Nigerian who is a good student of political history knows that Kalu was not among the founders of PDP. He was brought into the party alongside some of his colleagues who were governors between 1999-2007 by the retired military oligarchy led former President Ibrahim Babangida and General Theophilus Danjuma who hijacked the party from the original founders to ensure that Chief Obasanjo, who was just released from prison, emerged the presidential candidate of the party at the party’s national convention in Jos. This was against the popular choice of Chief Alex Ekwueme, one of the founders of the party. Kalu and some of his colleagues were the foot soldiers of the retired generals in the party. So it is wrong for Kalu to claim that he is a founding member of the party. The records are there for Kalu to factually dispute, and failure to do so amounts to deceit.

Most times, what matters most or challenging is not the building of a house, but the maintenance of such house. Imagine how PDP would have been today if some people have not stayed back in the party to rebuild it for better. If most members had toed the line of Kalu, only to force their way back into the party after their selfish ventures have failed them, the party would have gone into extinction by now. Shutting Kalu permanently out of the party will not only instil discipline in the party, it will serve as deterrent to other members who might contemplate toeing Kalu’s line. Readmitting Kalu into the party under any disguise will do more harm to the party than good, especially in Abia State because Kalu as at today has no political value or structure to bring into the party.

  • Much ado over Kalu’s return to PDP

Much ado over Kalu’s return to PDP

The return of former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has generated a lot of heat in the politics of the state. In this report, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, traces the genesis of the controversy and reveals a deepening power game in the state

In Abia State today, the political theatre seems wired with live electric cables. Hooked to a towering pole of unending controversy with the naked wires left unattended to, there is fear that except something is done fast, the long suppressed political fire in the state may soon be lighted.

    The controversy

Since the former governor of the state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, announced his return to the Peoples Democratic Party, last week, red hot tension has gripped the political atmosphere. This is because the news has sparked off  verbal exchanges, as Abia State Government and the state chapter of the party have officially rejected the alleged return.

Kalu, whose return to the party has remained an issue for years, had explained that he concluded his return process on January 16, 2013, when he was issued a membership card, bearing number 9787945 in his Igbere Ward.

Before observers could react to the development, the state chairman of the party, Chief Emma Nwaka, came out and rejected Kalu’s claims, insisting that the former governor had not been readmitted into the PDP in the state.

Nwaka also alleged that the card issued to  Kalu was  fake, since, according to him, “Igbere cards bear numbers which begin in the series of 95…, not 97…” He added that the entire executive of the party’s Ward A and B in Igbere, who allegedly issued the card to Kalu, had resigned on January 10.

This pronouncement was followed by published statements from some leaders of PDP in Igbere, Kalu’s home community, Item, Alayi and other neighbouring towns in Bende Local Government Area, in which they stated that the elders of the party and leaders in the local government area had not changed their earlier position on Kalu, asserting that he has, therefore, not been readmitted into the party.

But Kalu was not impressed or moved by all these. He said his return conformed to the constitution of the party, adding, “ I am back to PDP and there is no going back. I said that I will not come back to the party if Chief Obasanjo is the BOT chairman. Now he is out, I am back and other founding members of the party are coming back. We founded the party in 1998. And all the founding members have met and decided to come back and take over the party, and there is nothing holding us back.”

On the claim that he got the said membership card from executive members who had left office, Kalu asked: “ How can the whole executive of two wards resign? What was the reason they gave for resigning. They are deceiving the people and that deceit must stop. You cannot dissolve the ward executives and say they resigned. Emma Nwaka should take time. He is not the owner of PDP. We have come back to take over our party.”

But the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Theodore Orji, Mr. Ugochukwu Emezuo, speaking for his boss told The Nation in a telephone chat during the week that the former governor, Kalu, can’t come back to PDP.

Asked to state the position of the state government over the controversy surrounding Kalu’s return to PDP and why the governor, the state government and state leadership of PDP are against his return, Emezuo said: “The fact remains that Kalu is not a member of PDP and he can’t return to the party. You will recall that the last time he tried to return to the party, even before Governor Theodore Orji’s return to the party, he (Kalu) was rejected by the elders of PDP. He has again been rejected because everybody knows him well enough to see that he would not add value to the fortunes of the party. Instead, he will, in his usual style, continue to cause distractions. That is not what PDP and Abians need today.”

Emezuo added that “the elders of PDP in Abia, led by Governor Orji, openly demonstrated their stand when they went to Abuja, two weeks ago, and explained to the national leadership of PDP that Kalu is not a member of PDP in Abia State and that he would not be readmitted because all he wants to do is to cause confusion in the state and in the nation at large. This is a man who still runs his PPA, alleging that he has returned to PDP.

“As the state chairman of PDP has said already,  Kalu’s name is not in the party register. He is not a member of the ruling party here and nobody is impressed by the fact that he is now brandishing a fake PDP membership card. He cannot return to the party through the back door. That is not acceptable to PDP leadership and elders in the state,” he said.

But Prince Emeka Obasi, Kalu’s media adviser, told The Nation in a telephone chat that Kalu’s return went through the due process. “So, after that process, a few selfish individuals cannot nullify the process. No!”

According to Obasi, Kalu was required to go through his ward, and this is what he did. Obasi, therefore, said, ‘Can’t you see that somebody is trying to be smart?  PDP is the people’s party, as the name indicates, and not an organisation  for a few rich but misguided elements, who call themselves leaders.”

As he puts it, “the real people, the masses in Abia State, are not complaining. In fact, the people are happy and have been celebrating the return of their leader. It is only a few misguided elements that are erecting roadblocks here and there to defend their selfish interests. It is disheartening because these elements were not there in 1998 when Dr. Kalu and other patriots founded PDP. It is, therefore, difficult to understand why these people are so desperate today to pursue a man from a house he built. They will not succeed because the former governor has returned home. The lion has returned home and there is nothing they can do to stop him,” he said.

Reminded that the state chairman of the party has openly faulted the alleged return to the party and has described the membership card given to Kalu as fake, and that leaders of the wards in Igbere and neighbouring towns, like Item and Alayi in Bende Local Government Area, in a paid newspaper advertorial during the week corroborated the state chairman’s position, Obasi said, “They are playing politics the Nigerian way. The way desperate politicians operate in this country, anybody could have signed those advertorials. Don’t forget that the ward executive members who perfected Dr. Kalu’s return and issued him his membership card have been living under threat since then. In fact, as we speak, they have been hiding and could not sleep in their homes. So, we know what is happening. Even if those people actually signed that advertorial, we know that in their heart of hearts, they do not believe what they were made to sign. They have been pressured to say what they said and sign what they signed,” he said.

Asked who was issuing the alleged threat and piling up the said pressure on the ward executives,  Obasi said, “They know themselves but the point really is that the former governor is back to his party and the people currently troubled by the return cannot stop him.”

Kalu’s return and politics of Abia PDP

Given the current disposition of Governor Theodore Orji- led Abia State Government, which is outrightly against Kalu’s return to the PDP, there is the fear that if Kalu’s return is finally approved by the national leadership, the party would ultimately be factionalised in the state between Orji’s loyalists and Kalu’s and the opposition parties may take advantage of the development to win future elections in the state.

This calculation is anchored on the belief that Kalu, who said his return was informed by an agreement he had with other founding fathers of the party, enjoys the support of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led National leadership of PDP and some other very powerful  members of the party outside the state, who contend that his return will boost the fortunes of the party not only in the state but also in the South-East zone, ahead 2015.

A source close to the Umuahia Government House, however, told The Nation that Kalu’s alleged return to PDP is a ploy to destroy the party in the state. “Abia State Government is not oblivious of the plot to use the ludicrous return to PDP as a tool to destroy the party here. We know the game and that is why we cannot allow them to succeed,” the source, who pleaded anonymity, said, adding, “the game plan is to split the party.’

Reacting, however, Obasi said Kalu and his supporters do not believe his return will lead to the alleged split. “There will be no split in Abia PDP as a result of Dr. Kalu’s return. Instead, his return will only help to strengthen the party and take it to a higher level. This development will help the party because all the sycophants, who have been unable to guide the leadership in the state, will no longer thrive when the real leader is back,” he said.

    The larger picture

As the exchange of verbal arsenal between the opposing camps in Abia State continues, insiders have explained that the problem may not be easily resolved because of what some of them described as the “larger picture,” or the “2015 power game.” A source close to the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja told The Nation that the “national leadership had hoped that the return of founding members like Kalu will help the party ahead 2015 instead of creating divisions. So, the leaders consider this development as unfortunate and in my personal opinion, I think there would be need to carefully study the situation before coming out with a position.”

Another source, an aide to a leader of PDP, said, most of the leaders of the party in Abuja are worried ‘since they know that Orji can no longer contest in 2015. They would prefer full reconciliation than the current scenario. But the situation is dicey and everybody is being careful because the real issue is 2015 and nobody wants to misread the power game,” he said.

Explaining the dilemma of the national leadership of the party, the source said, “For PDP, it seems equally risky to antagonise either Kalu or Orji ahead 2015. That is why Abuja must tread with caution,” he said.

For now, the naked live wires that litter the bare floor of Abia State’s political theatre remains visible. So, both the field actors and behind-the-scene directors and stakeholders in PDP, besides verbal attacks, are still treading with caution. But as the game lingers on, the opposition groups are watching with keen interest.
