Anger over disqualification of PDP candidate from Ebonyi South by-election

The Federal High Court ruling of Friday, which sacked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for tomorrow’s Senatorial bye Election for Ebonyi South has generated condemnations.

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, in a statement described the judgment as procured and aimed at stopping the PDP candidate from participating in the election.

The court presided by Justice Hyeladziya Nganjiwa, held that the PDP gave less than 21 days notice for parties to conduct congresses for the by-election in line with the Electoral Act.

Ngajiwa ruled that the congresses of the PDP for the primary that produced Onu for the by-election felt short of the Electoral Act and thereby disqualified him for the election.

The Court ordered the immediate removal of Mr Onu’s name from the list of candidates for the election.

The Court further mandated Onu to pay N1m to each of the plaintiffs for leading the party astray.

Mr Odinkalu in a statement posted on his official social media handle lampooned the Judge for the judgement.

Reacting, Silas Onu, faulted the ruling adding that that the party will immediately file a Notice of Appeal to ensure that the party’s participate in the forthcoming election was not jeopardised.

He said: “While we acknowledge that the judgment is contrived and deliberately done for political reasons, we are filing our notice of appeal immediately to ensure that we legally continue our participation in the election.

“Our supporters are called on to come out in their numbers and vote for PDP on Saturday 3rd February, 2024.

“Today, we received a contrived judgment from Justice Ngajiwa of the FHC Abakaliki that PDP did not give INEC 21 days Notice of Congresses for the By-Election.

“It is interesting that INEC Abakaliki were the ones arguing about none issuance of 21 days Notice to them. The REC, who is an active APC agent, deliberately refused to attend our activities even with notices given to them.

“They monitored our primary election and asserted so. Yet, Justice Ngajiwa chose to ignore plethora of superior Court decisions on internal party affairs, even the recent Supreme Court’s decision on Plateau State. He pretended not to know that this is a by-election and also that he doesn’t understand internal party affairs.

“I have always been of the opinion that a judge only gives bad judgment for one of two reasons – either he is manifestly incompetent or unashamedly corrupt. Whichever the reason, a bad judge has no place on the bench.

“The obvious design of the judgment given 2 days to election is to create confusion in the process and ensure that our teaming supporters are discouraged from voting – it is sad that a judge will make himself available for such a hatchet job.

“The conduct of the judge is beneath the hallowed chamber he sits in and a disgrace to the entire judicial community and legal profession.

“The FHC is not the final court in pre-election matters and as such our participation is sacrosanct and our votes will count. God bless the PDP and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

He also stressed the need for the PDP to have a reward system for loyal members who had been with it regardless of the storm.

“For instance, I founded the PDP Governor’s forum, so what is my reward and how will you compensate me for holding down the party.

“Will I just sit down and allow people who don’t know the meaning of PDP to come and rule? People who do not know what the PDP stands for?

“We must build our party; we have been in opposition since 2015 because we always import people into our party.

“People who are using PDP as a vehicle to get to their destination, as soon as they get there, they forget the vehicle,’’ he said.
He added: “So, we are preaching let them start to build the party through faithful party members.

“Nobody should control the party, but we need faithful party members to go to the senate, become governors and even the president.”

‘Why PDP will lose Edo governorship election’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Edo Central Senatorial District, Archbishop Anthony Okosun, has said without reconciliation between the two PDP’s factions in Edo State, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the party’s National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Chief Dan Orbih, PDP’s eventual governorship candidate will lose the September 21, 2024 election.

He insisted that the two factions in Edo PDP must work together, in order to present a formidable force for the election, for the party not to labour in vain, especially for the victory of the candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) or Labour Party (LP) at the poll.

Okosun spoke over the weekend at PDP’s Edo Central Senatorial District’s secretariat in Uromi, Esan Northeast Local Government, when he led other leaders from the district to receive one of the party’s governorship aspirants, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a former member of the House of Representatives.

The PDP chieftain (Okosun) noted that without unity in the party, neither the faction led by Obaseki nor Orbih, the immediate Edo Chairman of PDP, would win the governorship election in Edo.

He said: “I want to beg you (Ogbeide-Ihama), our labour shall not be in vain. So that at the end of the day, we do not labour for the APC or LP to enjoy. You (Ogbeide-Ihama) are fully aware of the factions in PDP, as you are not a stranger in the party.

The senatorial chairman hailed Ogbeide-Ihama for being a true party man, despite the issues of the past, while assuring him that his message would be taken to the people, and admonished him to have the interest of PDP at heart.

The former member of the House of Representatives had earlier told the Edo Central senatorial leaders that his visit was to formally inform them of his 2024 governorship aspiration on PDP’s platform, and to solicit their support during the February 22 primary election of the party.

    • Ogun police rescue eight other abductees

Efforts by the Ogun State Police Command to rescue the Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Philip Aivoji, and other targets of abduction by gunmen on Thursday turned tragic with the loss of one of the targets.

The victim, identified as 37 year old Bilikisu Kazeem, was hit by bullets in an exchange of gunfire between the security personnel deployed to rescue them and the bandits who ambushed them on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Four other targets were injured but their condition was said to be non-life threatening yesterday.

    The search for Aivoji continues.

Spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, in an update on the rescue effort said the gunmen unexpectedly took over the Bamboo area of the expressway at about 7pm on the fateful day, barricaded the road with articulated vehicles and started shooting indiscriminately.

This sparked commotion with motorists abandoning their vehicles and running into the bush.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “The Divisional Police Officer of Isara Division in his strong commitment has successfully rescued nine out of ten persons from suspected kidnappers.

“Following a report received on the 25th of January 2024 at about 1900hrs that suspected hoodlums emerged from the bush near Bamboo area of Ogun State inward Lagos State, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The yet to be identified gunmen barricaded the highway with articulated vehicles, blocking oncoming motorists and started firing indiscriminately, causing a state of commotion and panic which made motorists to abandon their vehicles and fled for safety into the bush.

“Based on the information, the Divisional Police Officer and his team swiftly raced to the scene together with an Army patrol team on transit, rapidly returned gunfire which aided the escape of nine kidnapped victims who later rejoined their vehicles and continued their journey.

“A White Mazda Bus registered as LSR 288 XE was slightly damaged while Eunice Afolake Osalusi “f”, Erinfolami Samuel “m”, Obafemi Da Altantra “m” and Adeyinka Mathew sustained non-life threatening bullet injuries in their escape attempts. They are recuperating and stable in hospital.

“Sadly, one Bilikisu Kazeem “f” aged 37years, gave up the ghost before getting to the hospital. Her remains were immediately collected by her relatives who were conveying her to the hospital, declining any autopsy examination from the police.

“One Philip Aivoji “m” whose identity was later given by those earlier rescued revealed he is the Lagos State PDP Chairman and is still held captive, but covert operations are in place to ensure his release.

“Exhibits recovered include one AK47 Magazine containing 28 live ammunitions believed to belong to the hoodlums, handsets and car key. The items were handed over to their owners.’

The police spokesperson said Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations had mobilised Tactical Commanders on joint operations with other security agencies on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun on tracking mission, to rescue Aivoji.

A former acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Hillard Etta, said the PDP was wrong to blame Tinubu for Aivoji’s abduction.

“I think PDP is just like a struggling shadow with ineffectual movements that make no impact. It has become very clear that PDP does not have the capacity to play the role of a viral, constructive opposition party, so they are clutching at all straws like a drowning person,” Etta said in reaction to the PDP statement.

He added: “Rather than making wild goose chases and lame statements, they should pull themselves together so that they can be taken seriously by Nigerians.”
