Herdsmen attacked Benue community during peace meeting, say police

The Police gave yesterday a graphic account of how last weekend’s killings in a Benue community were carried out.

No fewer than 24 people were killed in Omusu, Okpokwu Local Government Area.

They are to be given mass burial tomorrow.

Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said some herdsmen invaded a peace meeting organised by the Okpokwu  Local Government Chairman between the community and the Fulani leader following complaints of an attack, killing people indiscriminately.

The police were alerted to a crisis situation in the community when some youths attacked some herdsmen, before what turned out to be a reprisal, Owoseni said

The police chief said the four herdsmen arrested in connection with the killings were assisting in investigation and would be charged to court.

Following the deployment of more security, normalcy has returned to Omusu community, it was learnt.

Owoseni said the police had also arrested 44 persons for violating the anti-open grazing law

He said the suspects were undergoing trial.

The commissioner of police who reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring peace in the state, promised  that nobody would be spared for violating the law.

He said one herdsman was recently arrested in Katsina-Ala when  some herdsmen led their cattle into a block making factory during which an altercation ensued.

Owoseni said 10 out of 14 persons who rustled herdsmen’s cattle in Guma Local Government Area were arrested while sharing the meat.

“The police are also involved in confidence-building patrols in Chille, Mbalagh, Makurdi Local Government Area where over 5,000 people were displaced by herdsmen.

“As a preventive measure, we are engaging chairmen of the affected areas, relevant state government agencies and the herdsmen to  find lasting solution to the crisis. We want to urge the residents to alert security operatives of any strange movement and activities.”

The police chief said 12 suspects were arrested for armed robbery and cultism. Weapons, including one locally fabricated pistol, one English pistol, one AK47 rifle, two AK47 Magazines, 29 rounds of live ammunition, two live cartridges, two motorbikes and one motorcycle with gadgets were recovered from them.

Former Senate President David Mark bemoaned the renewed killings and expressed regrets that the attacks were carried out despite peace initiatives.

In a statement  by his media aide Paul Mumeh, the senator described the development as sad and frustrating, saying that the killings had continued in spite of repeated peace moves between the indigenes and the Fulani herdsmen in the area.

“Twenty-six persons, mainly innocent women and children, were gruesomely murdered in cold blood by assailants believed to be Fulani herdsmen”.

Condemning the attacks, Mark said the crisis is degenerating to something akin to “war without end”, defying all peaceful approaches.

“I am aware of various peace initiatives over the incessant clashes resulting to loss of lives and property. That the killings continues unabated is something beyond the ordinary.

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday gave an insight into how the herders/farmers problem  could be curtailed.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the 26th Convocation Lecture of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) in Ikorodu, Oshiomhole said a crime committed should be treated as a crime.

“In every part of Nigeria and most communities, you will always have an area domiciled by the herdsmen and they move about their lawful business, here and there.

“ In my house, I have a herdsman who is managing my cattle and I’m sure there are a lot of other people too who have them.

“ But, like every other aspect of Nigeria, a couple of things might have deteriorated, including environmental and security issues among others,” Oshiomhole said.

  • Monarchs ratify leader at peace meeting

Monarchs ratify leader at peace meeting

After a long period of bickering and leadership challenges, the Council of Southeast Traditional Rulers has found peace. On October 23, the region’s monarchs ratified their leader who was elected earlier.

The body of traditional rulers had been hit with leadership crisis following the alleged inability of its former chairman and one-time chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Eze Cletus Ilomuanya to vacate the seat at the end of his tenure.

The council has now come together to put its house in order in Umuahia by ratifying the election of the Abia State chairman of traditional rulers, HRM Eze Eberechi Dick as its chairman for the next three years.

The body had at a meeting on October 19 elected Eze Dick as its chairman and has now ratified the election. The kings also presented their new leader to the state governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu who is expected to inform his counterparts in the region.

At an earlier meeting, the body resolved that the tenure of Eze Cletus Ilomuanya had expired as both the chairman of Imo state council of traditional rulers and South East council of traditional rulers. They also dissolved the executive committee headed by Eze Ilomuanya, who has been deposed in Imo State.

The Southeast traditional rulers decided that any traditional ruler who is not recognised by his state government or who maybe recognised but not nominated as a delegate to the zonal body by his state council of traditional rulers, should not be accredited as a member of the council, which means that Eze Ilomuanya ceases to be their member.

Eze Dick described the job of leading the entire traditional rulers of the zone as a daunting one which requires the prayers of all and sundry from the zone for him to succeed.

The new Southeast traditional rulers chairman said that from now on wards that the people of the zone will be speaking with one voice and that the era of crisis in the council is over, while they will be attending all meetings required of traditional rulers in the country as united body.

He explained that the executive council headed by Eze Ilomuanya had been dissolved on August 7 during their meeting in Umuahia, adding that the attempt by the former chairman to disrupt the election was foiled since he had no right to lay claim to a body he is no longer a member.

Eze Dick said that at the end of his tenure in the next three years that the seat will move to Anambra state which is what their constitution said which Eze Ilomuanya refused to follow for nine years, adding that the seat had always been rotated among the five Southeast states.

The new Southeast traditional rulers council chairman urged his colleagues to give him their support so that his best will come out for the benefit of all and the entire zone, stressing that together they can achieve a lot while alone nothing will be achieved.

He said that he expects challenges during his tenure but that he has strong believe that with God on his side that he will surmount the challenges and forger ahead in the task of leading the body to greater heights.

Fayose, APC, PDP lawmakers hold peace meeting tomorrow

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers and seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers are to meet tomorrow to resolve the raging impeachment crisis rocking the state.

The meeting is at the instance of the state’s elders led by an eminent lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola.

The peace meeting is scheduled to hold at ABUAD and will bring the warring factions together in a face-to-face interactive session for the first time since the crisis erupted last November.

Fayose, in a statement he signed on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, has pledged his readiness to be committed to peace moves.

The governor said he was committed to the peace move to end the crisis and restore the state to the path of peace, prosperity and development.

He said the peace of Ekiti State is far above all interests and therefore everyone should support the elders’ peace efforts.

His words: “Ekiti elders, under the leadership of our highly respected legal icon Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), called a meeting between the two factions of the House of Assembly to resolve political crisis and I  have no objection because the peace of Ekiti is far and above all other interests.

“The meeting is scheduled to hold at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti at 11am tomorrow.

“I, therefore, call on everybody to support this peace move and no one should do anything to undermine it.

“Knowing how agitated and concern the people of Ekiti have been on this crisis, I wish to urge our people to give this peace effort a chance.

“I urge security agencies to see to it that adequate security is provided before, during and after the meeting.

“I thank Ekiti people for their unflinching support for the government and appeal to them to continue to maintain peace, bearing in mind that no society can progress in an atmosphere of rancour.”

16 governors shun PDP’s Abuja peace meeting

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were yesterday absent at the grand finale of the ruling party’s reconciliation meetings.

Yesterday’s meeting in Abuja was the climax of the parleys held in the six geo-political zones.

The zonal meetings were equally boycotted by governors in most of the zones. The governors are party leaders in their states, just like the President is the overall party leader, according to the PDP’s constitution.

President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, also did not attend. It was not immediately clear if they sent apologies.

Senate President David Mark and House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal were, also, not there.

Mark is away in Ecuador for the inter-parliamentary union meeting. Tambuwal is in the country.

Of the 23 governors elected on the platform of the PDP, only two – Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio and Kogi State Governor Idris Wada — attended. Five sent their deputies.

Organisers of the event offered no explanations for the absence of the party big wigs at the function, even though they were all listed in the programme of events.

Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Abdulafatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe)sent their deputies.

A speech by PDP national chairman Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, obviously did not envisage the low turnout.

Tukur expressed profound appreciation to the President and “so many of our party members at occasion”.

He said: “Let me begin by first expressing my sincere appreciation to His Excellency the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, and the Vice President, Mohammed Namadi Sambo, GCON, for finding time to grace this historic occasion…

“I must admit that I am overjoyed and greatly overwhelmed by the presence of so many of our party members at this occasion. This is how it should be, given that PDP is the only real political party in Nigeria. No wonder that PDP is called the greatest party in Africa”

Tukur identified the problems plaguing the party to include lack of respect for one another, respect for the party’s constitution and rules, funding and federalism.

He also listed openness, inclusivity, fairness, fair-play and internal democracy in the party’s processes; and transparent and sanitised membership, as well as enlargement of membership.

The party chair warned that unless these and other issues are properly addressed, the party would continue to face daunting challenges.

He added: “Unless we effectively address these issues and challenges and as well modernise our operations as an enlightened organisation, we cannot reposition our party and prime it for the tasks ahead.

“In addition, we must strive to restore the integrity of our programmes and policies as enunciated in our manifesto. We also need to urgently bring our ideas and policies as a party in line with the realities of a fast changing world”

Tukur said the PDP acknowledges the right and entitlement of all political parties to exist and compete for political power. He also recognised the right of the Nigerian people to vote out a non performing party in government.

“We want it to be on record, that our party acknowledges the right and entitlement of all political parties to exist and compete for political power.

“We acknowledge and respect the rule of electoral practices and recognise that a party that does not perform well can be voted out of power as easily as it was voted into power.

“In a democracy, political parties are not anti-system and anti-constitution in their mode of operation. National interest mediates all their engagements and actions.

“Let us, however, leave no shadow of doubt, that we are prepared to bear any burden, shoulder any hardship, support any friend, oppose any opponent in order to assure the survival and success of democracy in Nigeria”.

Tukur appealed for cooperation of governors and leaders of the party at all levels in the party’s quest for reconciliation, reform and rebuilding processes, based on equity and justice.

Sambo, who also spoke at the event only re-read the same speech he delivered at the party’s reconciliation meeting in Kaduna on Saturday.

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) yesterday warned Tukur to stop planning for war ahead the 2015 election.

National Publicity Secretary of the CNPP Osita Okechukwu in a ststement yesterday said: “Conference of Nigerian Political Parties {CNPP} is outraged with PDP’s drum of war as we approach the 2015 elections. The chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was quoted thus, ‘There is a heavy war ahead in 2015, a group has come up and wants to sweep the mat off our feet.

“We cannot allow that to happen,……what I’m saying here is what I told our supporters in the Southwest.’

“We are outraged because PDP is at it again, we are yet to recover from the drum of war earlier dished out by the desperate political party. We regrettably recall the post-electoral-violence which trailed Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s declaration of 2007 elections as a do-or-die-battle. Since then it has been violence, violence and violence after each election; which renders families hopeless, fouls our democracy, breeds electoral apathy and impugns on the character of politicians.

“We call on the security agencies as a matter of urgent national importance, to query Alhaji Bamanga Tukur for his unpatriotic, undemocratic and inciting statement; for the least we expect from an elder statesman at this critical junction of unmitigated national insurgency is peace, peace and nothing but peace.

“We challenge the PDP to release the Shiekh Lemu Report which gave vivid account of the PDP-stimulated post-2011 electoral violence.

“Alhaji Tukur must be reminded that the 2015 election will be a referendum on the performance of the PDP-Federal Government. Also in the history of elections in liberal democracy, no electorate ever rewards an inept, corrupt and clueless government with votes and the Nigerian electorate cannot be an exception.

Otherwise, can Nigerian voters be expected to reward PDP for squandering N48.40 trillion which accrued from oil revenue between 2000 and 2011? The outcome of which is dilapidated infrastructure, darkness and rickety social services.

“Can Nigerians vote for a regime that wants to impose Petroleum Tax without recovering looted Fuel Subsidy Funds.

“Alhaji Tukur should stop beating the drum of war and rather accept the inevitability of regime change.”
