Ajimobi urges Nigerians to pray for peace in North East

The Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the return of peace in the county, especially the  North Eastern part of the country.

He said Nigerians must strive to live devotedly like the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), even as they beseech the Almighty to bestow His mercies upon the nation in this month and the others to come.

Ajimobi, who stated this in his Eid-el-Fitr message, implored the people of the state to pray for the people at the helms in the state.

“As we mark the completion of one of the most important tenets of Islam, the holy month of Ramadan, I pray that our lives will continue to reflect the devotion of the past month and we will continue to aspire to pure living.

“The lessons you have learnt during the Holy month are not to be discarded only to be re-learnt next year. We must strive to live devotedly like the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), even as we beseech the Almighty to bestow His mercies upon us in this month and the others to come.

“Since the celebration of the last Eid-el-Fitr, our country Nigeria, and indeed our state, Oyo, have gone through a political season. For the first time in many years, the election season was peaceful and hitch-free. I want to encourage you all to continue to live in that spirit of peace, and I hope that the period of Ramadan has granted you the spiritual strength to do so.

“Even as we rejoice, I remember our brothers and sisters in the Northern part of the country. The past few weeks have witnessed insecurity in some of those states, as a result of the evil acts perpetrated by insurgents. We must all pray for the safety of our fellow country-men and for an end to the insecurity,” he said.

Ajimobi called on the people to look out for the less-privileged in the society and extend the hand of generosity to them.

“My dear people,  please look out for those who are less privileged amongst us. Beyond praying for them, extend a hand of generosity to your neighbour. The Prophet (SAAW) made it a habit to be even more generous than usual in the Holy month. This is a practice we must all imbibe.

“The spirit of community that we have all embraced in the past month should become a part of our lives. Sacrificing for one another is one of the quickest ways through which we can individually contribute to the growth of our society.

“The spirit of contributing to the growth of society, I implore you all to make it a habit to pray for your leaders. Pray for those of us in Oyo State upon whom you bestowed your mandate again in 2015. Pray for the leaders at the centre, even as we all work together to bring the change that you overwhelmingly voted for months ago.”

  • I use comedy to preach peace

I use comedy to preach peace

Chukwudi Asonye, a 300-Level student of Science Education at the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT MINNA), is carving a niche for himself in the comedy world. Known as Asobaba De VC on campus, his nickname draws laughter from students. Chukwudi, who wants to be a professional comedian, speaks with DAVID OSU (500-Level Urban and Regional Planning) on his aspiration and other issues.

How did you discover your talent in public speaking and comedy?

It was during my childhood that I discovered that people laughed whenever I spoke about anything. Initially, I thought they were mocking me but I later found out that my words were funny. I tried to hone the skill, and professionally, I ‘ve been into comedy for five years.

Do you have a mission for taking to comedy?

Yes. My comedy is beyond fun. I am using my talent to preach peace to my listeners, especially the young. I want to make a positive impact on the lives of youths.

Have you ever been short of jokes in any of the shows you have done?

No, I cannot recall anytime I paused to think of what to say. I have always had more than enough jokes for my audience. Although sometimes I get stage fright, I confront such situation whenever it happens even without the audience noticing any slight change in my conduct.

Do you think comedy has a role in social integration?

Yes, it does. We cannot separate laughter from our daily life. Everybody likes comedy in one way or the other. And like football, comedy brings people together. Comedy preaches societal cohesion and human unity.

The social life on the campus is relatively low compared to other schools. How do you keep your comedy relevant?

It is true there are not many social activities in FUT Minna and we don’t have many social clubs that can organise big social events. But, I still manage to keep my comedy going through shows I do off-campus. But to keep the campus on social pedestal, I established a team called “Voices of Campuses”. We act comedies and make funny clips that can be downloaded on mobile phones, computers and iPads. We also broadcast the clips on social media networks.

How do you balance your comedy talent and academic pursuit?

I have always acknowledged the fact that my primary aim in school is to study. So, I face my studies squarely and I don’t want anything to affect it. But, comedy is what makes me happy and it is Plan B for me after leaving school.

Do you have a role model?

I have three successful comedians I look up to as role models. They are Basketmouth, Bovi and AY. I want to be as confident as Basketmouth, as natural and original as Bovi, and as creative as AY.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I see myself at the top of the comedy game. I want to be seen as a comedian with national and international recognition.

What is your advice for students who may wish to be comedians?

They should keep making people laugh. They should be creative and not allow anybody to discourage them. With focus and hard work, we will get to our promised land.

  • Youths walk for peace in Lagos

Youths walk for peace in Lagos

Trumpets blared amid loud drums and songs along Ikorodu Road when The African Lads Brigade, under the Universal Communion of the Anglican Church, walked for peace in Lagos.

The walk, it was gathered, was part of the activities to mark the movement’s 90th anniversary.

Before 7 am, many of the youths were at St Paul African Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, where the walk began. They were in branded white T-shirts; some carried the banner of the brigade and flags to create more awareness for the walk.

The walk, which started around 8am ended around 11.20 am. Both the old and the young participated.

The hot sun of that day meant nothing to the participants who trooped out in hundreds. They danced, played the brigade drums, trumpet and clapped in the fun-filled exercise.

The huge crowd moved through the Association Avenue in Ilupeju, down to Obanikoro Bus Stop and finally to African Church Cathedral Selem on Freeman Street in Ebute Meta on Lagos Mainland.

Security officials were on hand to control vehicular movement and the crowd. They caused a stir for all residents and road users along the routes they plied.

When the crowd got to African Church Cathedral Selem, around 11 am amid jubilation, little Tonade Okiki, 8, Oreofe Shoda, 11, were full of life after the walk. The crowd were later served refreshments.

According to the Brigadia General/Chief Executive Officer of the joint movement, Folarin Olusanya, an engineer, the walk was to encourage children to do exercises to remain healthy.

He added that the walk was also part of the 90th anniversary of the Brigade. “It is our way of thanking God for his preservation and growth of the movement which has spread to virtually all the states of the federation. The walk is also our way to thank God for the successful and peaceful transition in the country, especially in Lagos State, during the last elections. We thank God that the elections did not result in any form of problem or warfare that could cause commotion in the country.”

He added; “The walk is our way of using our strength, as youths to praise God and walk for the progress of the country. We want people to rejoice with us and Nigerians should be happy,” he said.

Secretary of the 90th anniversary committee, Oluwaseyilayo Otegbada noted that the walk was to proclaim Christ, bring back the glory of the movement for them to unite again and have something in common to do together.

Chairman of the 90th anniversary committee, Yemi Martins said the walk was to keep them fit and to let the world know what the Brigade is doing.

  • Can Lalong restore peace in Plateau?

Can Lalong restore peace in Plateau?

Correspondent YUSUFU IDEGU examines the challenges before the new All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Plateau State and how Governor Simon Lalong intends to tackle them.

For almost a decade, Plateau State has not known peace. Thus, elections in the state have always been rough. When the All Progressive Congress (APC) was introduced to states across the country, it was laughable to predict that the relatively unknown political party will form the government in a state like Plateau. Even soothsayers were not ready to stake a fortune on this. As a matter of fact, no one gave the ruling party a chance; it was unthinkable that the new party will form the government in the state two years after it was formed.

“The APC came to Plateau like a notorious armed robber to snatch the state out of the grips of the PDP,” said a political analyst, Mr. Cletus Matawal. “Plateau State has been in the firm grips of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 1999. Until April 11, 2015, the PDP had made it difficult for any party to make inroads into Plateau political terrain.” When the APC was introduced into Plateau during the build- up to the general elections, many were reluctant to join the party. One of the founding fathers of the party, Ambassador Yahaya Kwande, said: “A lot of our people never gave the party a chance when we started. During the state congresses of the party for the election of its state officials, I was begging people to come and contest.” However, the rejected party has become the ruling party at the federal and the state level, to the consternation of many PDP chieftains.

Also, the emergence of Simon Lalong as the governor was a surprise. However, the emergence of Lalong as the governor on the platform of the APC signified three major political realities in Plateau State: The emergence of two main political blocs led by Senator Joshua Dariye and Senator Jonah Jonah. When Dariye was governor, Jang was the leader of the opposition that made Dariye uncomfortable in  Government House for eight years, with his style of opposition.

When Jang emerged as the governor in 2007, he pushed Dariye out of the PDP. Jang also made futile attempts to probe Dariye. During the rivalry, Dariye defected to the Labour Party (LP) and became a senator in 2011. In the build- up to the 2015 governorship election, Dariye led the crusade for the defeat of the Jang- anointed governorship candidate, Senator Gyang Pwajok of the PDP. Efforts by Dariye and other opposition politicians paved the way for the emergence of Lalong as the governor. The emergence of the APC-led government also means that Jang has been pushed back into the opposition again as he was in 1999.

Lalong was the Speaker of the Plateau State House of assembly when Dariye was the governor between 1999-2007 and they never fell apart since then. The government of Lalong is therefore seen as the return of Dariye government. So, political developments in the state have been a rotation of power between the Dariye camp and the Jang political camp.

Jang had the opportunity of becoming the political godfather. He, however, abused the opportunity by refusing to implement the zoning agreement. He insisted on handing over power to his Berom kinsman, Senator Pwajok. With that single attempt, Jang lost grip of the state and paved the way for the APC to take over power. With this political development, Plateau is today without a formidable political leader as it was when its first civilian governor, late Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, was alive. Lar was the political icon who was a rallying point. But, since his demise, the vacuum created created by his absence has not been filled. It was widely expected that Jang will step into the shoes of the late Lar. But, it’s now obvious that the shoes are too big for him.  So, the state now revolves between two political figures; Dariye and Jang.

Dariye has an overwhelming influence on the government of Lalong. This has prompted the return of all former commissioners and special advisers who served in Dariye administration; they are now surrounding the new governor as political jobbers.

Gov Lalong has many challenges to tackle. One of the challenges is restoring unity. The state with its multi-lingual and multi-ethnic disposition need to do more to unite the people. The diversity of the people obviously played out during the build-up to the 2015 general elections. The three geo-political zones of the state made claims to the number one seat in the state. The original zoning arrangement ended with the tenure of Jonah Jang. It started in 1979 with the late Chief Solomon Lar and Sir Fidelis Tapgun from Plateau South. After that, Plateau Central had their turn during Dariye’s tenure. The final slot was that of Jonah Jang, which represented the turn of Plateau North.

So, if the zoning arrangement was to commence again, the slot rightly belonged to Plateau South. But, the three zones were fighting over the governorship. This was why the All Progressives Congress (APC) gave the governorship ticket to Lalong from that zone. On the contrary, the PDP picked their own governorship candidate from Plateau North.

Hence a lot of differences were created among the people during the build-up to the election, especially among the political class. So, Gov. Lalong has a duty to bring the people back as one so to ensure political stability within the next four years of his administration.

How Gov. Lalong hopes to go about this will be seen in his policies and programmes. but, at the moment, no one expects him to take off soon even though he has taken over the reins of power. The delay in the take-off of the new administration can be seen in the kind of state handed over to the administration. First, there is the issue of empty treasury. Gov. Lalong has announced to citizens of the state that he inherited empty treasury from his predecessor. The governor said: “I inherited empty treasury and a debt of N104b.” Gov Lalong while addressing judiciary workers led by the chief Judge of the state Justice Pius Damulak at the Presidential Lodge, old Government House, Rayfield,  Jos, said: “I found no kobo in the state treasury; I only received a total debt of 104billion, including the non-payment seven month workers salaries, as well as unpaid pension arrears. This debt profile is contained in the handing over note I received.

“I want the judiciary to know that the past administration left 104billion naira documented in the handing over note to me and there is also no kobo left in the treasury of the state and we will have to battle again with the seven months unpaid salaries of workers, including pensioners in the state.”

The implication can only be imagined, said Mr. Santos Ayuba Larab of the History Department a University of Jos. He said: “For such a new government you can’t expect it will take off smoothly. As a matter of fact, the debt profile of the state could be far more that quoted in the handing over note, with a careful investigation, more hidden debt will be discovered. So, whoever expect too much from Gov. Lalong so soon may be ignorant of the rotten state of our dear state at the moment”

With or without fund, the APC-led government cannot overlook some immediate challenges which requires immediate attention. One of such is the poor condition of the state workforce. No doubt, Gov. Lalong inherited a demoralised civil service. As at May 29, 2015  when he took over mantle of leadership, the state civil servants were on strike; they were owed salaries for upward of five months. It took a written agreement between Gov Lalong administration and the labor union for the workers to suspend the strike. Gov Lalong promised to seek credit facilities from bank to settle his workers so as to ginger them up.

Another issue that requires immediate attention is the prolonged insecurity in some parts of the state, especially in Plateau North and Plateau South. The insecurity predates the Jonah Jang administration, but it was not effectively managed. It has been handed over to the new government and everyone expect a different approach by Gov. Lalong to bring the violence to an end.

One of the immediate challenges before the new government is the issue of uncompleted projects. One could count up to 50 of them. But, the most challenging among them all is the intra-city road project in Jos, the Plateau state capital. At the moment, the situation of Jos city is pathetic. The uncompleted state of the road is causing pains to residents. The new government is battling tooth and nail to get the contractors back to site to ensure the roads are completed. The governor is at the moment appealing to residents of the city to bear the situation with promises to get the contractors back soon.

Besides, some close associates of Gov. Lalong believed that the new administration has a lot to do to unbundle it from groups of political jobbers that are already suffocating the new governor. One of Gov. Lalong’s close aides who will prefer to remain anonymous said: “The governor is already overburdened with pressure from people seeking political appointments; some are looking for appointments as commissioners, while other are seeking to become Special Advisers etc. I have noticed that the pressure on the governor was becoming unbearable.”

Governor Lalong is being by pressure from those who served in Dariye’s administration eight years ago. They see the emergence of Lalong as a golden opportunity to return to powerand they are doing everything possible to lobby their way in.

Above all, Gov. Lalong has an immediate task to dispense the litigation over his election at the tribunal. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is challenging the election of Gov. Lalong and until the case is successfully dispensed with, the governor will remain distracted.

Against tgis background, it remains to be seen how Gov. Lalong will tackle the immediate challenges facing the state. Are the people ready to exercise patience and for how long? The APC is new in the state and needs to make impact fast, if it must retain power in the state beyond a single term.

    Oyo PDP begins peace moves

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ms Jumoke Akinjide and the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, have backed moves by a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adebisi Olopoenia, to reform the party.

The duo showed their support at the second meeting of some party leaders in Olopoenia’s Ibadan home yesterday.

Akinjide sent a representative to the meeting; Makinde reportedly addressed the gathering through a telephone call from his South Africa base.

Olopoenia began championing the reformation of the party after its woeful outing in the last general elections.

Aside losing in the presidential and governorship poll, the party produced only one member of the House of Representatives.

The PDP chieftain assured that there was no going back on the effort to reform the party.

Akinjide’s personal assistant Kehinde Isiaka expressed his principal’s support for the move.

“Being a member of the Federal Executive Council, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, despite her commitment in the last election, is ready to even do more to ensure that PDP regains its rightful place in 2019.”

Makinde said he was ready to return to the party, if what orchestrated his exit was properly addressed.

  • Tuface pledges more support for peace among youths

Tuface pledges more support for peace among youths

Hip hop star, Tuface Idibia has pledged to continue promote the values of peace and love among young people through his music.

Idibia made this commitment at the Vote Not Fight review and media roundtable organised yesterday by the Tuface Foundation and Youngster Foundation with support from National Democratic Institute in Ikeja, Lagos.

Vote Not Fight is a youth non-violence voter education campaign that promoted peaceful participation by Nigerian youth in the 2015 elections. The campaign encouraged youths to make a commitment to shun violence and embrace peace. It is hoped that Nigerians from all walks of life will commit to peaceful elections by signing a non-violence pledge.

Idibia, who expressed his satisfaction at the Vote Not Fight campaign initiatives that reached over 68 million Nigerians during the just concluded elections said, “I have resolved to continue to work for peace, particularly among young people in Nigeria.”

He said, “Vote Not Fight campaign has done a lot to contribute to the peaceful outcome of the election and am so happy. It is driven by the Nigeria people who are tired of violence.”

Idibia noted that young people are always the tools used by politicians to foment trouble during and after any election in Nigeria.

Although, he was not seen to be campaigning for any politicians like his colleaguesin the entertainment industry, Idibia said, “if there was no peace after the 2015 election, nobody will enjoy the money.”

While he noted that entertainers who were seen campaigning for politicians during the campaign has the fundamental right to do so, said “The Vote Not Fight is a non-partisan initiative and I had to show a worthy example by talking to everyone on the table to vote and not fight, no matter their party affiliation, to keep the dream alive.

“I had to pay the price. I try to keep myself in a position to do the right thing and not mislead people. I am for one love for all Nigerians, no matter their tribe, religion, language or culture,” he said.

The Programme Officer of National Democratic Institute,  AnnabelUgwoke said that the institute will continue to support of the campaign by leverage on the skills, passion and commitments of all Nigerians especially the youth until we have a violence free election.

  • N10m suit: court orders firm, landlord to maintain peace

Justice Olamide Akinkugbe of a  Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered a travels and tourism firm, Peacock Travels and Tours Limited  and its landlord, Jude Ekwenife to ensure that  they maintain peace between them.

Justice Akinkugbe last week  while adjourning  a suit between the parties for further hearing till May 19, 2015.

She also ordered the counsels for both parties to advise their clients not to take any action that would amount to treating the court with contempt.

The orders were issued after the applicant had told the court that the roof on its office was being removed thereby leaving  its properties opened up for destruction.

The respondent on the other hand claimed before the court that the applicant had sent police after him.

Peacock had dragged its landlord, Ekwenife, before the court  claiming N10million as damages over alleged harassment and damages of its properties.

Sued alongside Ekwenife was Mrs. Yinka Igandan, who was said  to be the former landlady to Peacock before she sold her property and transferred ownership to Ekwenife.

In the statement of claim, the applicant stated that after purchasing the property at No. 136, Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos, the new landlord, Ekwenife, had allegedly refused to recognise Peacock as his tenant and had therefore ordered the firm to pack out even while its annual rent paid to its former landlady, was still subsisting.

The firm alleged that on July 15, 2014, “suspected thugs and other hirelings in the company of the 1st respondents invaded the business premises of the applicant and proceeded to demolish parts of the structure and in the process destroyed the petitioner’s Internet connection hardware and water tanks.”

The firm claimed that in a bid to forcefully eject it, the first defendant caused a tipper load of gravel to be offloaded right at its office entrance, thus humiliating the firm before its clients and making  difficult its daily business conduct.

According to the firm’s Senior Human Resources Manager, Owoade Akinjide, efforts by the police to settle the matter failed after Ekwenife allegedly refused to cooperate with the police.

The applicant said its workers had been working under the fear of being picked up by policemen from the Terrorism and Heinous Crime Unit because Ekwenife had gone to lodge a complaint against them and had allegedly misrepresented facts of the dispute.

The travel agency is therefore  praying the court to restrain Ekwenife from ejecting it forcefully in addition to payment of  N10million as damages for its properties that were allegedly damaged by the first defendant.

It is also  is seeking a declaration that there is a tenant-landlord agreement between it and Ekwenife.

But Ekwenifin his response,  urged the court to decline jurisdiction over the matter and to declare that the applicant had no locus standi to institute the action.

In a counter-affidavit deposed to by himself, Ekwenife denied being the purchaser of the property, and insisted that one Chief Segun Phillip, rather than Peacock was the recognized tenant on the property.

  • Peace back in Ebonyi communities

The combatants have laid down their arms and residents of Ezza and Ezillo communities in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State now enjoy peace.

Hostilities broke out in the area at the weekend, and for three days human and vehicular movement was halted on the popular Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway which was sealed off by irate youths.

The situation forced motorists plying the route to take a detour in order to continue their journey.

The crisis, it was gathered, started when Ezza residents in prison custody for over one year were released last week.

They allegedly returned to the disputed land where they had lived for decades as settlers. But the disputed land had been declared a buffer zone by the state government.

Their action annoyed Ezzilo people who protested along the expressway leading to tension in the community.

As the tension lasted, the state government through the Deputy Governor and Governor-elect Chief Dave Umahi summoned stakeholders of both Ezza and Ezillo to an emergency meeting in his office at government house, Abakaliki.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the two-day meeting by leaders of the two parties and read by Secretary to the State Government, Chief Boniface Chima, the stakeholders ordered that status quo ante  be maintained in the disputed land.

They also directed that anyone staying on the disputed land should vacate within 24 hours, warning that defaulters will be treated as criminals.

The communiqué read: “Ezza and Ezillo leaders should review the government white paper on the crisis and submit a detailed opinion position on it and make suggestions for a way forward and pass it to the state government within six weeks”.

“A 27-man joint peace committee be immediately constituted to include eleven people on each side, one representative from the SSS, Civil Defence, Army and Police with the Permanent Secretary Office of the Deputy Governor as Chairman.

“Security agents must investigate the sponsors of the fresh hostilities and invasion in Ezillo and report same to the government within six weeks.

“On no account should any party take laws into their hands or barricade road again.”

The people of Ezza-Ezillo have been in serious crisis since 2008 with over 100 lives lost and properties worth billions of naira destroyed.

The crisis escalated when 67 persons were massacred on December 31, 2012
