  • Pellegrini rues West Ham’s misses

Manuel Pellegrini was left frustrated with the poor finishing that prevented West Ham from reaping the full rewards of his plan to overcome Chelsea.

In the absence of Marko Arnautovic, Michail Antonio and Andriy Yarmolenko squandered golden opportunities to turn one point into three in the 0-0 draw at London Stadium.

Chelsea was dominant for long periods between those scares, commanding over 70 per cent of possession.

Pellegrini commended his team’s work ethic in defence but lamented the lack of composure that cost them successive victories.

“When you have such clear chances against a big team, you must score at least one of them. You must score,” the Hammers’ boss said.

“Chelsea had much possession because we allowed them to have the ball.

“We forced them to play most of the game from the right side, not the left side where Marcos Alonso and Eden Hazard are so dangerous.

“The first half was very clear, the way I wanted to play. The second we, maybe lost too many balls. But against these teams, a draw is not a bad point.”

Yarmolenko, twice on target in last weekend’s 3-1 win at Everton, was especially culpable for failing to break the deadlock, planting a free header wide with less than 15 minutes remaining.

“Maybe it seemed easier to score than miss. Maybe he relaxed a bit more,” Pellegrini said of the chance.

“But there were two very clear chances in the first half. [Chelsea] had one clear chance where Lukasz Fabianski saved from [Alvaro] Morata. It’s always difficult to score.”

  • Pellegrini dismisses suggestions Perez refused to play

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini denied suggestions Lucas Perez refused to come on as a substitute in yesterday’s 3-1 win at Everton.

The victory was West Ham’s first in the Premier League under the Chilean, but it also saw Marko Arnautovic suffer an injury and Perez attract attention on the bench.

Shortly after scoring West Ham’s third goal, Arnautovic was forced off with a knee problem and Michail Antonio took his place.

Television cameras then picked up an angry-looking Perez engaging in what appeared to be a heated debate with a member of Pellegrini’s coaching staff, leading to speculation the Spaniard refused to come on.

But Pellegrini explained that while he planned to bring Perez on, he changed his mind once he saw Antonio standing ready to enter.

“It is very simple; when Marko had a problem with his knee, I wanted to put Lucas on,” said Pellegrini.

“I thought he was ready to come on, but he was sitting on the bench. Antonio was ready so we were not delayed, so I put Antonio on.

“I didn’t have to [explain the situation to Perez], I don’t have to explain anyway, especially during the game, I can do that during the week.

“Antonio had to come in to help us win the game and he was the change.”

Arnautovic’s admission that he was in “a lot” of pain following his knee injury will have worried West Ham supporters, and Pellegrini was unable to reassure them.

“We’ll see, I can’t tell you to know if it is [serious] or it’s not,” Pellegrini, who turned 65 on Sunday, added.

“It’s behind his left knee, he felt something. Tomorrow [Monday] we have a recovery day and we will see what happens after that.”

  • Pellegrini predicts big future for Iheanacho

Pellegrini predicts big future for Iheanacho

Outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has predicted that Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho will be an important part of the Citizens under his successor Pep Guardiola.

The 19-year-old was in spectacular form yesterday for the Manuel Pellegrini led side as he excelled in attack playing alongside Sergio Aguero. He scored a brace and forced a penalty as City hammered Stoke City 4-0 at the Etihad to move into third on the premier league log.

Pellegrini, who will be leaving the Manchester City for Pep Guardiola at the end of the season, said after the game: “A big team must always be focused on both competitions. Premier League and Champions League. Every big team must do it every year.

“Stoke is fighting for nothing but nobody wants to lose games. It was important to score the first goal.

“Kelechi Iheanacho is an important young player with a lot of future. He scores lots of goals but he is not just a penalty box player. I am sure that his role in this team will be very important.”

Also, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart praised the ‘brilliant’ youngster for his performances in his breakthrough season with the club.

“We’ve got our job done and we look forward to Tuesday now,” Hart said.

“Kelechi’s been brilliant, he turned up last pre-season somewhat unknown it’s fair to say and he has really worked hard and got stuck in. The manager has had a lot of faith in him. He shows what a good squad we have got now.

“Since the international break we have done well. We just need to keep that going until the end of the season.”

An absolutely delighted Kelechi Iheanacho thanked the fans for their support and pledged to continue to improve.

“I am very pleased and happy to score goals today. I thank my team mates, the manager and the fans. I am improving a lot but I need to work even harder to show my qualities.”

PELLEGRINI’S QUEST FOR NIGERIAN: Man City stop Iheanacho

    • To give ex-Eaglet improved contract

Manchester City would now hand Kelechi Iheanacho an improved contract after news emerged that outgoing boss Manuel Pellegrini wants to take the young Nigeria striker with him when he departs the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The Citizens, who had been comfortable about Iheanacho being forced to wait on an improved contract, according to SiaS sources, however, have no intention of letting the starlet leave and are confident they can quickly agree a vastly-improved five-year deal with the player.

The 19-year-old has three years remaining on his present £20,000 a week deal, but is currently in the middle of an ongoing dispute between two rival agencies who are both claiming to represent him.

Iheanacho has scored eight goals in 19 matches this season and recently scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 FA Cup victory at Aston Villa.

Sources said Pellegrini is expected to snub an offer to return as Chile national team coach in favour of managing a Premier League side and has been linked with the Chelsea and Manchester United jobs.

The South American took a gamble when he promoted Kelechi Iheanacho to City’s first team just before the start of this season, and the Nigerian has repaid his faith by netting eight goals from 19 matches across all competitions.

  • Pellegrini: I told Kelechi to take penalty

Manuel Pellegrini  praised Kelechi Iheanacho’s hat-trick performance at Villa Park on Saturday and explained why he insisted the young Nigerian took City’s early penalty.

City were already 1-0 up through Iheanacho’s first of the day when Raheem Sterling was felled by Aston Villa right back, Leandro Bacuna in the 23rd minute.

Sterling dusted himself down and took the ball before Bacary Sagna gave the instruction that Iheanacho was to step up to send the Blues on their way to the 4-0 victory.

Pellegrini explained the decision, stating: “I told Bacary to tell Kelechi to shoot the penalty because he was in charge of them today. It’s unbelievable the way he takes penalties and I’ve seen him do it every day. That’s why he was the right option.

The Chilean didn’t limit his praise just to Man of the Match Iheanacho as he moved on to praise the team’s performance as a whole.

“I’m very happy with the performance of the team because we made some important changes. We’re playing so many important games that I think we needed to rotate the squad,” he said.

“Secondly we were a very solid and consistent team. It’s very important to have different ways to play. We can’t press high every game because we have so many games it’s impossible,”he said.

Pellegrini Reveals: Iheanacho will play again

•Promises to give Nigerian more chances
•Tips him as good replacement for Dzeko
•Says injury stopped him last season

Manchester City manager has revealed how he inspired Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho in Saturday’s English Premier League 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The 18-year-old striker pounced in stoppage-time to give the Citizens a narrow 1-0 win at Selhurst Park, which maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.

Iheanacho had only been brought on for Wilfried Bony moments before bagging the match winner and it was just his second appearance for City. Pellegrini has high hopes for the Nigeria under-20 international and admits the player’s development persuaded him not to bring in a replacement after Edin Dzeko left for Roma.

Pellegrini, who plucked him from Nigeria last year, said: “I told him to go and score a goal. I was going to make the substitution before, because Bony had only worked the last few days with the team, but he told me he was okay. That’s why I kept him on, but he deserved more minutes. It was important he took that chance.

“He is a very important player for us. He’s just 18 and started working with our squad last season, but he was unlucky and had a big injury in the last three months of the season.

“This year he started pre-season with the squad and will be a very important player for the future. He’s one of the reasons I didn’t bring another striker when we sold Edin Dzeko. He deserves that chance,” said Pellegrini.

    Pellegrini heaps praises on Iheanacho

Man City coach Manuel Pellegrini has hailed the performance of Kelechi Iheanacho in Tuesday’s win (via penalties) over Roma  at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Flying Eagles midfielder got off the mark in pre-season with a goal in the 50th minute and was involved in Raheem Sterling’s debut goal in the third minute.

In his post match comments, Pellegrini reserved special praise for Iheanacho and Spain youth – teamer Garcia.

The Chilean manager said: “The big positive for me in this game was to see young players Kelechi Iheanacho and Manu Garcia – both of them just teenagers – have really good performances. ”

Iheanacho has now scored 3 goals for the first team of Manchester City in unofficial games.

  • Pellegrini: Iheanacho is future of Nigerian football

Pellegrini: Iheanacho is future of Nigerian football

Kelechi Iheanacho is the future of Nigerian football. It is as simple and straightforward as that. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has shown beyond any reasonable doubt the sort of talent he is. Blessed with an eye for a pass, packs a powerful shot and full of trickery. The 2015/2016 season is expected to be his breakout season and he has the pre--season tour of Australia to prove himself, not just with Manchester City, but also with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

‘Nacho’s’ talent has never been in doubt. He was always set for great things and it is only a matter of time before he fulfils that big potential of his. A product of Nigeria’s U17 class of 2013, he was very instrumental in Nigeria winning that year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and it was no surprise he ended up as the tournament’s best player. He is touted to be the long term replacement for Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha in the Nigeria set--up but first he has to prove he can be the player everybody believes he can be.

He is presently in Australia with City and started in their 2--0 win over Adelaide in their first pre-- season game of the 2015/2016 season. Work permit and injuries delayed his introduction to the first team last season after an impressive pre--season in the United States, but is expected to feature in Manuel Pellegrini’s plans for the new season.

“Manchester City will not send him on loan. Plan A, B and C is for him to remain with the club next season,” a City official told the Manchester Evening News in June.

Even Pellegrini himself acknowledges how good the 18--year old is, and spoke of how good he can be in the future.

“A very important player for us in the future,” Pellegrini was quoted in the Manchester Evening News.

Pellegrini added: “It depends on the way he takes this profession, but I think he’s a good talent.”

    Key Strengths

Iheanacho is a rare breed. Not the fastest of players, but he is blessed with a perfect close control. Besides being a traditional attacking midfielder, he can also play in a variety of positions in the attack. He has featured severally for the City youth teams as a wide attacker, a centre forward and as a second striker. Naturally a left-footer, he is quite comfortable with the ball on his right, and scores quite an awful lot of goals for a player who isn’t a natural centre forward.

    Statistics

He has played nine games in FIFA competitions – the U17 and U20 World Cups and has scored six goals in those games an incredible average of 1.5 goals per game in those competitions!

Due to injuries, he only featured five times for the Manchester City youth teams last season, and scored three goals, including a wonderful solo effort against rivals Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup – which is an average of 1.6 goals a game – and he also made two assists.

    Interested Clubs

According to transfermarkt.com, Iheanacho has a contract with Manchester City until the summer of 2016, but no clubs have really made serious efforts to get him since he joined the former English champions. He was linked with Portuguese giants, FC Porto, before opting for City and he was almost sent on loan to MLS side, Columbus Crew, but injuries meant that didn’t happen.

    Quote:

“I am working hard to keep myself fit and also to break into the first team. It is not going to be easy because there are a lot of international players in the first team so I just have to be patient and keep working hard,” he told Chris Oguguo for sl10.ng in June, 2014.

  • Pellegrini insists beating Man Utd will be motivating factor

Pellegrini insists beating Man Utd will be motivating factor

Manchester United host Manchester City in a huge derby game at Old Trafford on Sunday. With just a point separating the sides, small margins could decide this one and that means winning personal battles…

Can Wayne Rooney get the better of Manchester City defenders? Could Sergio Aguero have too much for Marcos Rojo? And will it be Michael Carrick or David Silva pulling the strings in midfield?

Sky Sports pick out three key battles that could decide the Manchester derby…

The respective captains have enjoyed and endured a long-running battle for supremacy in this fixture that dates back years. It’s not always been friendly either with Rooney criticised for brandishing an imaginary card when angling for Kompany’s dismissal in 2012.

Rooney has certainly had his moments of glory too. Kompany could do nothing to prevent the Manchester United forward’s stunning overhead winner in 2011 and Rooney also scored braces away to Manchester City in each of the following two seasons – games in which the defender was sent off after 12 minutes in the first then substituted due to injury after 21 minutes in the second.

Kompany has had his highs as well. Plenty of them, in fact. He scored the only goal of the game in what turned out to be a decisive win in the title race in April 2012 and has played every single minute of City’s victories at Old Trafford in each of the past three seasons. The concern, however, is that the Belgian’s form is not what it was.

“Vincent Kompany has turned into Mr Rash,” said Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville last month. “I don’t know what’s happened to him. He needs to settle his game down.” Rooney does not appear in the mood to let his opponent off the hook either. He’s scored six goals in his last eight appearances for United and is revelling in his forward role.

“He’s proving now that he is Manchester United’s best striker, enjoying the role and scoring goals,” said Neville on Monday Night Football. Although Robin van Persie has confirmed his fitness ahead of the derby, it seems unlikely that United boss Louis van Gaal will want to change too much with Rooney in this form. How this battle shapes up could go a long way to deciding the outcome.

    Rojo v Aguero

At the other end of the field, an Argentine duel could be critical for both teams and it seems that there might be a little animosity between these international team-mates. The pair reportedly fell out during last summer’s World Cup and when Aguero pulled out of a community event in the build-up to the November derby between the teams, Rojo jokingly suggested that the City striker might be scared of him.

Events at the Etihad Stadium proved that to be nonsense. Aguero had the better of it even before Rojo went off with a shoulder injury in the early stages of the second half, having run away from his marker once only to be hacked down and eluded him a second time before being denied by David de Gea. Aguero scored the winner – and only goal of the game – just seven minutes after Rojo departed.

United are better organised now and Rojo knows he’ll need to be vigilant. “In the penalty area he is a very quick mover and gets into position very quickly,” said the United defender. “He can be controlled, but it is up to us to keep an eye on where he at all times and get into him with a degree of firmness. You have to stick close to him, that’s for sure. Be very attentive.” Easier said than done.

    Carrick v Silva

Silva excelled in the No.10 role the last time that City played at Old Trafford. Operating behind Edin Dzeko, the Spaniard had a role to play in the striker’s first-minute goal when he burst through the centre and might have doubled the lead inside 10 minutes when he found vast space between Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones. The little magician controlled the play for much of the first half with Marouane Fellaini summing up United’s frustration in a 3-0 defeat when taking a sly kick at him.

The question on Sunday will be whether Manuel Pellegrini keeps that performance in mind and opts to utilise Silva in the same position. City’s penchant for playing with two forwards has meant Silva has had to drift in from the flanks and the playmaker was out with a knee injury when the teams met in November so Pellegrini’s thinking on the matter is unclear. Given that City were not entirely convincing that day, even once United were down to 10 men, it could see Silva return as a No.10.

Not least because the make-up of the Manchester United midfield will be ostensibly similar to how it looked a little over 12 months ago. Van Gaal has made fundamental changes to the team since replacing David Moyes, but the Scot’s midfield that day featured a trio of Carrick, Fellaini and Tom Cleverley. Two of those seem certain to feature in a midfield trio with Ander Herrera asked to knit the play instead of Cleverley.

Of course, Van Gaal has worked hard to bring more cohesion to United than Moyes ever achieved and he’s unlikely to spend too much time thinking about a game that happened before he’d even arrived at the club. But Carrick struggled to get to grips with Silva that afternoon and the job of tracking the City star when he moves into those pockets of space will be a crucial one. Indeed, it’s just one of a host of battles that could decide which team finishes on top in Manchester this season.

  • Pellegrini rates Iheanacho high

    Pellegrini rates Iheanacho high

Manchester City are confident Nigeria youth international Kelechi Iheanacho will be issued a work permit.

And the English Premier League moneybags have stressed that the highly rated starlet is part of coach Manuel Pellegrini’s plans.

Kelechi Iheanacho is highly regarded by Pellegrini, so much so that he was allowed to train with the Argentina National Team before the friendly with Portugal last month.

“Kelechi has been in England training with the first team of Manchester City,” a source told SL10.ng.

“When Argentina met Portugal in November, the Argentina national team trained with a shadow 11, not the regulars you see on television, and Iheanacho was among those selected.”

With no caps for the Super Eagles, the 18-year-old’s future at the Etihad Stadium is hanging in the balance due to red tape, but the Citizens are hoping to invoke the Premier League special talent clause to complete the transfer.

“We are optimistic that Iheanacho will get a work permit, that is what everyone is looking forward to. He should be able to prove his mettle and break into the first team,” added the source.

“Manuel Pellegrini wants him which is important. He has to be considered as a special talent to get a work permit. Man City are not prepared to loan him to another team.

“They don’t have a Plan A, B or C for Iheanacho.  The club want him.”

Iheanacho, who has been called up to the Nigeria Under 23s, has been linked with New York City and KV Mechelen in the last few months.
