    Kashamu cautions PDP on convention

The Senator representation Ogun East senatorial district, Senator Buruji Kashamu, has said that the proposed national convention slated for August 17 will not resolve the leadership crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement he circulated in Abuja Tuesday, Kashamu pleaded with elders in the party to find ways of uniting the Caretaker Committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi with the Ali Modu Sheriff faction.

According to him, it would be better for the party to unite the two factions before going ahead with the proposed convention, warning that doing otherwise could worsen the crisis situation.

The Makarfi committee, backed by the key organs of the party, including the PDP Governors, has resolved to go ahead with the convention in spite of the various conflicting court judgments and orders against both factions.

Makarfi and Sheriff have continued to lay claim to the leadership of the party shortly after the botched May 21 Port Harcourt convention where Sheriff was replaced with Makarfi.

Kashamu further warned that unless issues of the various conflicting court injunctions are fully addressed with the two factions in agreement, the outcome of the proposed convention may also become a subject of fresh litigation.

The senator said, “Going to Port Harcourt for another national convention on August 17, without addressing the issues that have stuck out like a sore thumb might turn out to be an exercise in futility.

“I appeal to all our leaders to wade into the crisis and resolve the issues. If we gloss over the issues and facts and go ahead to hold the proposed convention without resolving them, the perception of PDP as a lawless organisation will sink deeper and ultimately public opinion will be against us.

“An air of palpable confusion pervades our party and the land, with one division of the court saying Makarfi’s appointment is right while another division of the same court says Sheriff is the authentic national chairman of our party.

“We cannot continue like this. Already, the nomination (governorship) processes in Edo and Ondo States are being endangered by the current crisis.

“It is incumbent on all well-meaning leaders and elders of the party to court Senators Sheriff and  Makarfi and look for a political solution to this crisis and resolve it, once and for all. Nothing is too much to give, if we truly love the party”.

Kashamu noted that although there was no court injunction stopping the proposed August 17 convention, the reality of a pronouncement by a court in Abuja to the effect that the Makarfi committee cannot lawfully take actions on behalf of the PDP remained a source of grave worry.

Besides the resources that might be wasted on the exercise, Kashamu said going ahead with the convention could also constitute contempt of some of the court injunctions on the part of the organisers.

The lawmaker said these loopholes could easily be exploited by groups and individuals who are bent on frustration the efforts of the party to their own advantage.

Said he, “They wait on the sidelines to analyse situations and then go to court when you least expected to procure orders and judgments that they use to exploit the system.

Stressing the need for the party to guard against such pitfalls, Kashamu appealed to the party leaders to help put an end to the culture of impunity which has continued to plague the PDP.

He stated that for peace to reign, party leaders and members should stop seeing themselves to be above the law

“Thus, it is crucial for us to find a political solution to the leadership crisis, unite our people and resolve the issues so that the various court cases can be withdrawn. An assortment of court orders, rulings and judgments will only deepen the crisis and make it intractable,” he added.

Kashamu enjoined party stakeholders to do the right thing so that when they are called to account for their actions, they will be found on the right side of history and the law.

  • Jonathan, PDP underdeveloped Bayelsa – APC

Jonathan, PDP underdeveloped Bayelsa – APC

The Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday, challenged the state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to show the people of the state the federal presence Bayelsa  has attracted throughout the 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government and six years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The party said Jonathan, Dickson and his party have underdeveloped the state and squandered golden opportunities to attract development to Bayelsa.

The party was reacting to a statement by Dickson that leaders of the APC should use their contacts and connections to attract federal presence to the state.

But APC in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Panebi Fortune described the governor’s remarks as “mischievous and loose”.

The statement described the immediate past president and his party, the PDP as liabilities to the people of the state.

APC said: ”Our attention was today drawn to a mischievous and loose statement credited to the Bayelsa state governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, apparently in clear exhibition of arrogance and shallowness that APC leaders from Bayelsa state were yet to attract development to the state.

”From the statement, it was clear that the governor was either being misled by his own imagination or ‎was merely merely expressing another misguided view of our party, the APC.

”In our view, the statement was reckless even as it was a shameless show of brazen arrogance by a man whose party, the PDP had an ample opportunity to develop Bayelsa state that looked the other way.

”Does it not show much of political liability that while Jonathan,a son of Bayelsa state held sway for six years, the state is yet to take off on? What template of development did the former president lay before he was voted out of office? For us in the APC and indeed the generality of Bayelsans, both Jonathan and his party, the PDP were liabilities than they were assets to the people of the state. They underdeveloped Bayelsa state.”

It added: ”May we use this medium to remind Governor Dickson that rather than chasing shadows and engaging in blackmail, he should consider the plight of Bayelsa workers and pay their salaries. The level of hunger, despair and insecurity occasioned by poverty we thought, could ‎be of paramount interest to him.

”It is a shame that despite the God-given opportunity, Jonathan and his party decided to impoverish the people of Bayelsa state just as Governor Dickson, like an emperor, has taken solace in a conquest-like squeeze of the people.

”We use this medium to advise Governor Dickson to face governance during this period of judicial reprieve as the days of justice are not too far away. It can only be preposterous that development which had eluded our dear state over the years under a PDP national government can be hurriedly canvassed to wrestled to Bayelsa within 15 months of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

”For our teeming supporters, we enjoin you to remain steadfast and ignore provocative moves orchestrated by the state government and its agents to trigger unease. We will win at the end of the battle.”

  • Edo: PDP chairman defects to APC

Edo: PDP chairman defects to APC

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in ward 11, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo state, Chief Sunday Edehor, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chief Edehor said he led his supporters to the APC because he does not want to be stoned by his people for showing ingratitude owing to what the people of the area have benefited from the APC led government.

Edehor said he has been in the PDP since 1998 but recently observed he and his supporters have been deceiving themselves by remaining in the party.

“The truth is that I found out that some of us have been deceiving ourselves in PDP for a long time. This is the first time Etsako man will be governor in the person of Adams Oshiomhole and now the same APC is giving us Deputy governor so how do you expect us to remain in PDP.

“We have been managing over the years abusing Oshiomhole despite the fact that he is our son but we are in PDP, but it has come to a stage when we decided to think about what is good for our people. PDP since 1999 never gave Edo North governorship not to think of giving it to Etsako. One leader is always moving it to wherever he feels while our people suffer here.

“Just take a drive around Etsako area you, you will see the roads, schools Oshiomhole has built for us, so don’t you think our people will stone some of us if we continue to remain in PDP? I don’t want to risk my life because they will say I am an enemy of progress.

“So I will be a mad man to remain in PDP. And let me tell you, there is no more PDP in the entire three Local Governments in Etsako. It will not make sense to remain at all, because both the people and God will even punish us so that is why we decided to leave for APC. It makes more sense for us to join APC so that the developmental projects Oshiomhole that has started in Etsako land will continue.

“People are supposed to play politics for good life, development and not selfish interest. I will be considered a selfish man if I remain in PDP. Today in Etsako, I am proud that we have seen development and I want that development to continue when Shuaibu becomes Deputy Governor” he stated.

  • PDP can win Lagos – Dokpesi

PDP can win Lagos – Dokpesi

Chief Raymond Dokpesi on Friday urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state to unite and forge a common ground in a bid to win the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mogul made this known when his campaign team berth in the commercial centre to canvass the support of delegates from the state ahead of the national convention billed for Port Harcourt, Rivers on August 17.
“I appeal to you to bury your differences and unite so that PDP can win this state. Since 1999,  we have presented a divided house at every election and it is always our undoing at the polls. Your leaders can attest to the fact that I have made several efforts to unite the various groups in the past. If you support my aspiration and I emerge  as the chairman, we will unite the party and win the state,” he said.
He told delegates that there is no rancour  between him and Chief Olabode George, who is also aspiring to the same position.
Lagos state PDP chairman and a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Moshood Salvador, described Dokpesi as a pride of PDP, noting that he is a respected Nigerian who is capable of leading the party.
“The PDP is proud to have High Chief Raymond Dokpesi in its rank. He is capable to lead the party but let me say we will also accompany our own, Chief Olabode George to Edo state to canvass for votes from delegates,” he said.
The Edo state PDP organizing secretary, Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe appealed to the Lagos delegates to accord Dokpesi their support during the national convention, stressing that he is a bridge builder and a detribalised leader.
Other speakers including the former chairman of PDP Kaduna, Chief Abubakar Gaiya Haruna and his Nasarawa counterpart, Chief Yunaha Iliya also called for support for Dokpesi, stressing that he is capable of reinventing and rebuilding the party.
  • ‘PDP didn’t pay to use public schools for campaign’

‘PDP didn’t pay to use public schools for campaign’

Edo State Government has described as untrue allegations by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that it refunded money paid by the People’s Democratic Party for the use of public school fields and other public places for electioneering campaigns.

It also said no school head was summoned by Governor Adams Oshiomhole for allowing the PDP to use Okpujie primary school in Uromi for its campaigns in Edo Central Senatorial district.

State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, had accused the state government of denying them the use public property for its campaigns.

But State Commissioner for Education, Gideon Obhakhan, in a chat with newsmen said it is difficult to refund any money paid into the state Internally Generated Revenue account.

Obhakhan challenged the PDP to show evidence of its application and payment for the use of school field and other public places across the state.

He said the APC led administration believed in equity and fairness and as such gives equal opportunity to everybody in the state to use public facilities.

The Education Commissioner said there was no evidence to show that the PDP paid for the use of any school field and was denied access.

According to him, “As far as they apply, they pay and it is approved, they are allowed to use it. There is no evidence from our record to show that the PDP paid and they were denied. There was no request from them to use any primary school and there was nothing that was denied. They have used other primary schools and there was no denial.

“To say a school head was sanctioned is the figments of their own imagination because there is no record to show that anybody has been sanctioned or queried for allowing use of Okpujie Primary school because there is no reason for denying them the use of the school.

“Their allegation is not going to prevent APC from winning the election. They are free to use any school as far as they follow due process. I heard they said they paid and somebody refunded the money. How do you get money from the IGR account as if it is one man’s business. Raising sentiment in the public will not help their course because their past government was a failed one. They think the only way to gather support was to create media hype and sentiments from the public.”

  • Dokpesi to Sherrif: You can’t stop PDP convention

Dokpesi to Sherrif: You can’t stop PDP convention

A chieftain of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Raymond Dokpesi Thursday boasted that neither the former National Chairman of the party Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff

Sheriff, the National Publicity Secretary of the party Olisah Metu, nor any other member of the Sheriff faction can stop the forthcoming Port Harcourt National Convention of the party.

Sheriff, Wale Oladapo (National Secretary), Dennis Alonge-Niyi (Deputy National Youth Leader), Alhaji Bashir Maidugu (Deputy National Legal Adviser), Mrs. Hanatu Ulam (Deputy National Women Leader), Alhaji Lawa Dutsima Anchi (Deputy National Auditor), Chief Okey
Nnadozie (Deputy National Organising Secretary) and Chief Olisa Metuh (National Publicity Secretary) had gone to the federal high in Abuja seeking for injunction to stop the National Convention.

But an Aspirant for the Chairmanship position of the party in the August 17 National Convention, accused Sheriff and members of his faction of manipulating the system with impunity and disrespect for the party rules and regulations.

He said this Thursday at Ebonyi State PDP Secretariat along Abakaliki/Enugu Expressway, shortly after meeting with the state’s delegates to the proposed National Convention.

Dokpesi who is on campaign tour of the 36 states of the federation and the FCT also said there is no crisis in the PDP.

His words: “I don’t think there is any crisis in PDP and I don’t know of any faction in the party. A group of persons think they can manipulate the system.

“In the past, there was a lot of impunity, a lot of disrespect for party rules and regulations and some people in the party are still living in that era and think they will disturb and distort the
position of the party but the party is united. 99.9% of the party faithful and party members are solidly behind the organization of the convention.

‘’There is no nothing they cannot do to stop the National Convention. There is nothing that those that are trying to stop the convention will not try but by the special grace of God, the wishes of the 99.9% members will definitely prevail and convention will hold, no man can stop the Port Harcourt August 17 National Convention of our great party, PDP.

‘’There is no crisis in the PDP. What we need to do is to rebrand the party, re-energize the party, re-build the party, and put the party on the proper pedestal in the proper path to be able to face the challenges of the present and the future.

‘’The APC has shown very clearly that they are incapable of handling the problems of Nigeria; they have no experience, they are not prepared for governance and they came to power by accident,’’he said.

He said he was in the state to identify with delegates to the National Convention.

“Am an aspirant for the office of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and am currently on a nationwide tour to the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory meeting the National Delegates to the proposed August 17 2016 National Convention of the party and am soliciting for the support  and the delegates to the convention because in them actually the powers of the party reside. So am here soliciting their votes and support for the
    convention’’.

  • Edo 2016: PDP leaders are dishonest – Edebiri

Edo 2016: PDP leaders are dishonest – Edebiri

Former governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Solomon Edebiri, has finally disclosed why he resigned as a member of the party.

Chief Edebiri attributed his decision to what he termed “dishonesty of the party leadership’’.

Speaking to Journalists at Obayanton village in Ikpoba-Okha local government, Chief Edebiri said the events of the June 20 PDP primaries were awful and ‘a complete negation of what democratic tenet is all about.

Chief Edebiri said he refused to join either the Modu Sherrif faction or any other party.

He stated that he refused honour the invitation to the Abuja residence of former PDP BOT chairman, Chief Tony Anenih because of what happened in 2012.

“In 2012, he offered me money to dump my aspiration and join the PDP but I declined. But in 2016, he still referred to that episode, accusing me of joining forces with Oshiomhole to fight the party.

“Even after swearing with my father’s grave, he still didn’t believe me. I am a man of integrity and do not take money from one person to fight against another man.

“Not knowing what he might also say after meeting  with him and to keep my sanctity and integrity, I thought the best decision was to avoid meeting with him or any other leader of the party,” he said.

“My resignation followed the dishonesty of the party leadership who reneged on its pledge to provide a level playing field for all aspirants at the primary.

“And we had all also pledged to move with the party beyond the primary provided the primary was free, fair and just.

“There were reports that the party institution gave a specific instruction to party chairmen at the Local government level for members to vote for a particular aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

“ So my understanding is that the primary was not free, fair and just,’’ he said adding that; “I will not blame Ize-Iyamu but the party leadership.

“And i neither  want to fight anyone nor remain in the party,’’ he said.

  • PDP chieftain hail Edo lawmakers over Speaker’s seat

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, Okharedia Ihimekpen has hailed lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly for returning the Speakership seat to Esanland.

Ihimekpen said the lawmakers did the right thing by picking a lawmaker from the Okpehbo axis in Esanland.

The PDP chieftain said the Okpehbho axis has been marginalized over the years by Chief Tony Anenih who is from Agbazilo axis.

Mrs. Elisabeth Ativie stepped down for Justus Okonoboh to emerge as Speaker following criticism that the APC had marginalized the Esanland.

Ihimekpen said the crisis about Edo Central marginalization started with the PDP in 1999.

He said the APC should be commended for looking at Okpehbo people and that such move would serve as a good omen for the party.

His words: “If it were some PDP leaders in the past, they will prefer it is zoned to Uromi or Agbazilo. In 1999 they conspired to zone the governorship to Edo South at the detriment of Edo Central. In 2003, the same leaders came up with a formula that they was no vacancy at government House still at the detriment of Edo Central.

“In 2007, when an Edo Central man became governor, the conspired to remove him just for three commissioners. Still at the detriment of Edo Central. In 2012, they zoned it to Edo South to the detriment of Edo Central, in 2016 again, they zoned it to Edo South at the detriment of Edo Central. Then the question is who is fooling who? And who has marginalized Edo Central?”

A chieftain of the APC, Comrade Mathew Emiohe, said the move would guarantee victory for APC in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Comrade Emiohe said the APC was now positioned to break the PDP grip in Edo Central with the return of  the speakership to Esanland.

“I think it is a welcome development for my people, we actually felt marginalized but now with the Speaker position I can assure you that a lot of thing will change politically in the area, it was a good.”

  • Sylva to Dickson: Leave tribunal to do its work

Sylva to Dickson: Leave tribunal to do its work

Former Governor and Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, Friday, asked the incumbent governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to halt his dangerous campaign against the state’s election petition tribunal.

Sylva said Dickson and his co-travelers were patronizing a few online media to cast aspersions on tribunal members and browbeat the court as it prepared to deliver its judgement.

The former governor is challenging the outcome of the 2015 governorship election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Dickson, a candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the winner.

Sylva in the statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, reacted to series of verbal attacks launched by pro-Dickson’s groups ahead of the judgement.

He said that Dickson was frequently using bully-boy tactics involving a series of lies deliberately told to impugn the integrity of the tribunal in obvious fear of an unfavourable ruling.

Sylva said: “In one of the canards about a week ago, vended through a strange group, Good Governance Initiative (GGI), the Dickson group claimed that Sylva was lobbying the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, and other officials of the Federal Government to put pressure on the election tribunal to declare him governor via a “black market judgement”.’

“Another false report, an apparent follow-up to the intimidation campaign run, appeared on Thursday, 14 July. It claimed the existence of an imaginary tension in Yenagoa following alleged “confirmation” by APC leaders, including the national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu that the tribunal would rule in Sylva’s favour.

“According to the report, “Some key supporters of the Dickson-led PDP” have met to plan how to react in the event of an unfavourable judgement.

“Chief Sylva, who is the petitioner in the case sees this attempt by Dickson to second-guess the decision of the tribunal and, perhaps, try to intimidate it, as immoral and despicable. Sylva appeals to Dickson and his men to allow the tribunal to do its job”.

He said that Dickson successfully applied his familiar intimidation strategies in the past, before, during, and after the governorship election in the state last December and this January.

But Sylva said such tactics would not succeed with the judiciary adding that as a democrat, he took his case against the last election to the tribunal.

He said: “As a democrat and firm believer in the rule of law, Sylva had taken his misgivings about the outcome of the election to the election tribunal to see if the victory awarded to Dickson by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could stand up to judicial scrutiny.

“He, thus, urges that Dickson should for once control his predilections for falsehood and violent incitement and wait for the judicial process as it unfolds.

“Sylva’s expectation of justice from the election tribunal is hinged on his belief that the honourable judges would be guided by the letter and spirit of the law.

“Neither Bola Tinubu, nor Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawal or Aisha Buhari is a member of the election tribunal. Therefore, it is unfair for Dickson and his group to insinuate that the respected tribunal judges are poodles of any political party or individual.

“It is also unjust for Dickson to be spending the resources of the people of Bayelsa State on a desperate media campaign purposed to call into question the reputation of the country’s judiciary.

“It is even wicked, ungodly and uncaring that this wastage is happening at a time when workers in the state are being owed several months’ salaries.

“We are aware that huge amounts of money have been disbursed by Dickson to individuals and groups to do a hatchet job on the Bayelsa election tribunal as it prepares to deliver its judgement.

“We are also aware that certain groups have been procured by Dickson and his men to cause violence if the ruling does not go in his favour.

“This manifestation of politics of anxiety on the part of Dickson is despicable. It is uncalled for, especially, as he is well aware that whatever judgement the election tribunal would give is not final”.

Sylva added: “Finally, no date has been fixed for judgement by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Holden at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with Petition Number: EPT/BY/GOV/002/2016, involving:  Sylva and the APC Versus INEC, Dickson and PDP. Yet, one report was very categorical on “the date” for verdict. This is worrisome.

According to one online medium on Thursday: “Although the tribunal will deliver its judgement on his petition on July 29, sources told journalists that the ‘positive mood’ in the Sylva’s camp was sequel to alleged ‘confirmation’ received from some influential citizens within the APC that judgement will likely go the way of their candidate at the tribunal.

“Irrefutable evidence linking key media aides of Dickson to these irresponsible reports makes this even more worrisome.”
