  • Atiku wins in Akwa Ibom

•Akpabio loses re-election bid  •APC alleges vote buying, manipulation

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubabar has won 28 of the 30 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State.

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took two councils, namely Mbo and Essien Udim, where Senator Godswill Akpabio hails from.

Elections in Udung Uko were cancelled due to alleged violence and irregularities arising from snatching of ballot boxes, result sheets and card readers.

This is as a strong indication emerged last night that Akpabio had finally lost his re-election bid to the Senate to the PDP candidate, Chris Ekpenyong.

Results from eight of the 10 local government areas that make up Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District favoured the PDP candidate. Akpabio won in Ikot Ekpene with a slight margin.

The INEC finally rejected the result from Essien Udim, Akpabio’s local government after it confirmed through the card reader that votes earlier allocated to Senator Akpabio were much more than the total number of accredited voters in the council area.

On the elections, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, said the elections in the state was generally peaceful despite pockets of violence as shown in the destruction of INEC materials and attacks on the commission’s staff by thugs working for politicians.

“Those who are threatening our staff should stop it. The intimidation is getting too much. I am here to preside over the affairs of elections in this state. For the first time, to ensure credibility of the elections. Materials were deployed and they were destroyed and at a great loss to our country. The time to snatch ballot boxes and write results is over. If you can win, you will win,” he said.

But, the APC kicked against the result of the presidential election, calling for its cancellation over alleged electoral fraud.

Addressing a news conference after the collation of the results, presidential agent for APC, Bishop Samuel Akpan, alleged that the polls was fraught with irregularities and completely short of democratic norms.

State Party Agent Umana Umana said: “The position of our party is well-documented. The whole process of collation is not satisfactory to our party. Vote buying was experienced all over the state. We hope that the umpire will take note of the grievances in our petition. We are talking about the integrity of the process. We are saying that the umpire to be seen to be fair to all concerned.

Similarly, Akpan also alleged vote buying and manipulation by PDP in connivance with INEC.

“Long before now, our party has been agitating that we do not have confident in the process. In addition, the outcome has proved now that there has been compromise arising from money that had changed hands. Akwa Ibom is an APC State and the people that made the PDP are now in the APC.

“The results we are getting do not reflect the votes that we have. This is not the type of democracy that we want. We urge the Federal Government to rise and protect our democracy,” he said.

  • Don’t let PDP take you for a ride, Presidency tells international media, observers

The Presidency on Monday urged the international media and observers not to let the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) take them for a ride.

The warning was contained in a statement issued by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (Official Spokesperson) and Director, Strategic Communications, Festus Keyamo.

According to him, the PDP is bent on discrediting and destabilizing the process that would lead to conclusion of last Saturday’s Presidential election.

He said “It has become imperative to issue this statement against the backdrop of the dangerous extent to which the main Opposition Party (PDP) is taking the machinations to discredit and destabilize the process that would lead to a logical completion of February 23, 2019, Presidential Elections by way of announcement of results in line with the established procedure in the Electoral Law.

“Overall and from reports received in the Situation Room of the Election Planning and Monitoring Directorate of the All Progressives Congress from across our country, at this point it is safe to conclude that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done a good job despite the challenges and the delays experienced in some cases.

“With over 84 million Permanent Voters Cards (71 m collected), mobilising the citizenry to exercise their democratic right to vote has been a massive undertaking but, thankfully, it was conducted largely peacefully and on schedule. We wish to acknowledge and thank all the regional, continental and global observer groups that have acknowledged the peaceful, transparent process in their various preliminary reports issued earlier today.

“Against this backdrop, the plethora of unconstitutional acts by the main opposition (PDP) and its sympathizers like urging a premature declaration of its candidate as winner and filling the social media space with fake results transcend all boundaries of descent conduct.

“However, we urge our international friends, observers and patriotic Nigerians not to be deceived. Very early in the build-up to the Elections, the Peoples Democratic Party and its Presidential candidate embarked on a cynical plan to discredit INEC as a backup plan in the likely event of them losing the election.

“You would recall, in this respect, unsubstantiated and wild claims made by Candidate Atiku and his cohorts that were all designed to put a question mark around INEC and damage the faith of the electorate in the democratic process.”

This, he said, is an assault on Nigeria’s democracy and an affront to millions of Nigerians who trooped out to exercise their civic duty by voting in the elections.

“The PDP  is, in essence and most, unfortunately,  saying that if they don’t win fairly then they are willing to tear down the walls to get their way by hook or by crook.

“In spite of this unjustifiable and provocative stance, we are confident that the results by INEC are free and fair. Our elections have progressed over the years and we ask that the PDP does not derail us to the dark past with its childish antics.

“The announcements by INEC which has gotten underway will be concluded in due course. Let us all be patient and let this credible process take its course.” he stated .

  • PDP lost 300,000 votes to card reader failure, says Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi on Monday stated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lost over 300, 000 votes to the operational failure of Card Readers during the conduct last weekend’s presidential election in the state.

The governor stated this while speaking to reporters in Abakaliki, the state capital on arrival from his hometown Uburu.

On the success recorded by the party in last presidential election, Umahi described election as a game in which there is no permanent enemy and friend but permanent interest within a political arena.

According to him: “I want to thank Ebonyi people for coming out to cast their votes.

“I want to thank politicians and political parties that participated in the election. Election is a game. It comes and goes. No permanent enemy.

“I want to congratulate all those that won. Everybody has destiny. I want to commend the security agencies in the country. They refused to be induced.

“I also commend the officials of INEC. I want to console the families of electoral officials who died in active service. My prayer is that God will grant them eternal rest.

“Buhari still remains my friend whether is losing or passing. I can’t castigate him and I can’t cajole him.

“Over 300, 000 votes were discarded in Ebonyi because of the hiccups of the card readers.

“We have issue between constitution and guidelines. We have given 260, 000 votes to PDP. The rest is what INEC announces. PDP has done well.”

He added: “The truth is that I can’t speak for all the state. If you were declared winner and you didn’t use card readers, you may lose.

“I call for improvement and electronics voting. Card readers may not have been used in other parts of the country.

“The issue of the card readers was a problem. Every responsible Governor must respect the President. He is the boss of all the Governors.

“You can’t get anything by castigating him. If you make your leader happy, he can assist you in making progress. I am in a hurry to change the narrative of Ebonyi.”

  • PDP demands release of Buba Galadima

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the immediate release of one of the spokespersons of its Presidential Campaign Council, Alhaji Buba Galadima.

The national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, in a statement he personally signed on Sunday, said Galadima was Sunday evening, arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The statement said, “We as a party condemn this arrest in the strongest possible terms. Buba Galadima is a patriot. His patriotism has been previously and strongly highlighted by various Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari.

“What crime has he committed? I answer my own question and say none. Mr. Galadima is constitutionally guaranteed a right of freedom of speech and freedom after the speech.

“The nation is currently boiling with the deaths caused by thugs of the All Progressives Congress. Not one of these thugs has been arrested by the DSS.

“The nation was embarrassed by drone images of bullion vans laden with cash driving into the home of the National Leader of the APC and no action has been taken by the law enforcement authorities. Yet a patriot and pro-democracy activist is arrested.

“We cannot be hoodwinked by the puppeteering of the DSS by the APC. It is obviously no coincidence that the APC Presidential Campaign Council called for the arrest of Mr. Galadima at 12 noon today (Sunday the 24th of February, 2019) and the arrest was duly effected by the DSS an hour later.

“This arrest is only the latest in a pattern of anti democratic actions by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“Nigeria will not be cowed. We have voted for democracy and as a nation, we will not be taken back to Egypt by the discredited blame centred anti democratic forces who have turned a once thriving economy into the world headquarters for extreme poverty.

“I call for the immediate release of Mr. Buba Galadima by the Department of State Services, even as I remind the DSS and other security agencies, that their oath of allegiance was sworn to Nigeria and not to the All Progressive Congress or President Muhammadu Buhari”.

  • PDP insists on results from polling units

…alleges plots to alter election results

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted on the official release of results already delivered at the various polling units for its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

A statement last night by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, cautioned that Nigerians will not accept any figures except what was declared and collated from the polling units.

The PDP further alleged that the Buhari Presidency has been mounting pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and dispatching officials to change results in Rivers, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, Bauchi, Cross River, Borno, Yobe and Edo states among others, in a frenzy to allocate fictitious figures for President Buhari.

“Pathetically, the Buhari Presidency is also threatening the South-East state governors to change results and carve a 25% for Mr. President, a scheme that has already failed.

“In Bauchi state, we are aware of the plots to move thump-printed ballot papers and fabricated results from Bauchi to Dass Local Government Area to upturn PDP’s victory in the results already delivered and announced at the polling units in the area.

“This is why the electoral officials have been delaying moving the results for final collation and announcement. If this plot fails, the APC plans to void the results for Dass.

“In spite of all these, our party assures Nigerians that the hope for a new government led by Atiku Abubakar, is already manifest.

“Our agents and indeed, Nigerians, already have the results as delivered at the polling units and are not ready to accept anything to the contrary. President Buhari and the APC should therefore quietly come to terms with the fact that they have been defeated.

“The PDP therefore cautions INEC to respect the laws and electoral guidelines by upholding and declaring results from the polling units as expressed by Nigerians on Saturday”.

  • Group tips 32-year-old activist as Audu Ogbeh’s replacement

In his reaction, Mr Agbese thanked God for the opportunity and the group for the recognition.
He said: “It has been our lifestyle to do it the way we do, sometimes we are appreciated and times without number we are rejected by the same people we are trying to protect in the society.”
He recalled his days on campus as an activist when while fighting for the rights of students in the area of hikes in fees when some will betray the cause and back out.
“it is normal for people to do things and not appreciated in the society but it is also normal for people to do things and be appreciated I think something in particular makes this one very unique.
“The fact that the Benue Elite Development network is a group of intellectuals and professionals from diverse backgrounds”
He said the award is not just well deserved but coming from the right group.
“I am totally flabbergasted to fit into the shoes of this award consideration ihave honoured people but this is the first time am being honoured in my life and it will remain a memory in my existence for a very long time”
Mr Agbese further dedicated the award to his family, the staff of TheNigerian News Group who have been steadfast with him for the growth and stability of the organisation.
