  • PDP to National Assembly: probe Nigeria’s N24.3tr debt profile

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised questions over Federal Government’s “unwholesome” borrowings amounting to N24.38 trillion debts as the end of last year.

Debt Management Office (DMO) Director-General Ms. Patience Oniha said last week that the figure comprised of debts owed by the federal and states governments as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

She explained that the figure was N2.66 trillion higher than the N21.7 trillion recorded as at December 31, 2017, and represents a year-on-year growth of 12.25 per cent.

The PDP yesterday called on the National Assembly to investigate how the funds were disbursed.

In a statement by its spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP blamed the government for what it described as saddening and devastating debt overhang on the nation.

According to the party, the rising debt profile was a product of the government’s failure to stimulate and run a productive economy.

The DMO boss had explained that the funds were borrowed to finance projects, fund budget deficit and meet maturing obligations, noting that 68.18 per cent of the debt are domestic.

Ms. Oniha said some foreign debts were borrowed so as to refinance treasury bills because of the short tenor of the bills.

But the PDP blamed the administration for its reliance on heavy borrowings and unbearable tax regimes, which the party said have crippled productivity, caused untold hardship and mortgaged the economic future of the nation.

The PDP said there has been a culture of unexplained borrowings leading to a steep rise in the debt stock from N17.5 trillion in 2016 to N21.72 trillion 2017, rising to N24.387 trillion in 2018.

The PDP said: “It is shocking and completely insupportable that our nation’s debt had risen from N21.72 trillion in December 2017 to N24.387 trillion in December 2018, showing an accumulation of a whopping N2.66 trillion in a space of one year.

“President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration therefore has a huge explanation to make to Nigerians…”

The party called on the National Assembly to commence a system-wide investigation into the borrowings by the administration, particularly the terms of the borrowing and the handling of the funds.

  • PDP Rep to INEC: obey court order, declare me winner now

The House of Representatives candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Rita Orji has urged the National Electoral Commission (INEC) to obey the pronouncement of an Abuja High Court and declare her the winner of the election.

The serving member, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora Matters said her prayers was hinged on the pronouncement of Justice Bello Kawo of Federal High court, Abuja on Thursday that the electoral body should go ahead and release the result of the election with immediate effect.

The court said result should be based on the original results of the election polling booth by polling booth.

While commending the judiciary for standing up for the common man and in defense of the nation’s democracy, the lawmaker also praised INEC for not allowing some individuals in its employ to perpetrate fraud.

She said: “INEC should now do the needful by going ahead to announce the  original results of the poll by polling booth by polling booth, if this is done and corrections of the noticed shortcomings carefully done, we will accept the outcome and then the Commission will be left to take necessary disciplinary against its officials.

“However, if the Commission still go ahead to announce the results of the poll based on the mutilated and doctored figures, we will have no option left  than to head for the Electoral Tribunal to seek redress.

“The Electoral officers will have to account for all the electoral materials they collected for the conduct of the poll in the Constituency, the Presiding Officer who suddenly assumed the supper power to cancel results or change results at will will tell the tribunal how and where he got those powers”.

While she expressed confidence of victory at the end of the day, the lawmaker commended the people of the Constituency for their support, while urging them to remain calm and law abiding.

  • PDP opponent to Ndume: you are not fit to be Senate President

The senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Borno South senatorial district in the 2019 general elections, Kudla Satumari popularly called Haskey has asked one of the candidates for the position of Senate President in the 9th Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume to forget his ambition.

Satumari said Ndume is not the right candidate for such a high leadership position, describing him as a self- centred person who has contributed nothing to the development of his constituents.

He accused Ndume of working against his party in favour of Senate President Bukola Saraki and the PDP in 015

Speaking in an interview in Abuja, Satumari also warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to nominate Ali Ndume as Senate President because he will reclaim his mandate at the Election Tribunal.

He alleged his victory at the polling units was upturned between the polling stations and collation centre where the results were rewritten in favour of Ndume.

He said: “What people don’t know is that I have worked assiduously for him to become the senator in 2011.

“I was among those that worked hard to ensure that he won the election. I even named a primary school I built in area after him. The fight is not personal but we should not reinforce failure”.

On whether he will consider the option of an out- of- court settlement, he said: “Never. Out of court settlement is never an option.

“It is not about me but my people because the level of insecurity in my area has gotten to alarming stage. I doubt if we still have men to stand for the people.”

He went on: “Our problem is that nobody is bringing the issue to the centre stage. My over 80 year-old mother slept in the bush last week.

“It pains when the federal government claims Boko Haram has been degraded yet the kind of insecurity we are experiencing on daily basis before, during and after the general elections has never been so under Goodluck Jonathan.

“It was better under him because they can take control over a Local Government but the kind of hit- and- run we are having now and the seeming lack of concern or tangible effort made by the appropriate authority to curtail the attacks, make us to wonder if we are still part of this country.

“That is why I will never accept any out of court settlement. Let the court decide and confirm his victory.

“I will appeal and if the Appeal Court still gives it to him, I will accept and leave for God.

“My life has been threatened and there has been nothing that has not been done.

“There is nobody on this earth, including my mother, I cherish and respect so much that can prevail on me to step down for whatever consideration.

“I will never concede and even if lawyers refused to defend me, I will defend myself”.

  • Rivers: Let the will of the people prevail – Obi

Mr Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the will of people prevail as it resumes collation of results in Rivers.

Obi, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP in the last Presidential Election gave the advice in a statement issued by his Media Office on Monday in Abuja.

INEC has fixed between April 2 and April 5 for the collation of results for March 9 Rivers’ Governorship Election, which was earlier suspended due to disruption and violence.

Obi said that the needless stretch of Rivers people could only be compensated if peoples will was allowed to prevail in all elective positions in the state.

He advised INEC to see the collation of results in the state as a huge opportunity to project its image.

Obi said that the people of Rivers should not have been subjected to the agony of waiting for more than 20 days before hearing their results, if not for those who were desperate for power.

He said that Rivers state was so critical to the economic and political development of the country that a serious government should not contribute to its destabilization.

The former Anambra Governor said that the militarization of the election in Rivers and other South South states remained the sour side of 2019 general elections.

Obi said that aside the fact that Rivers state was a traditional PDP state, the performance of its gubernatorial flag bearer, Nyesom Wike in the last four years made imperative that no party would be able to compete effectively in the state.

He commended the resilience of the Rivers people and urged them to remain resolute until their will prevailed.

  • Struggle for Cross River Central’s seat rages

Nicholas Kalu in Calabar in this report captures the ongoing battle in Cross River over the Central Senatorial District

CROSS River State is made up of three senatorial districts: The southern, the central and the northern districts. In the history of the politics of the state, at least since the beginning of the present democratic dispensation, the central district of the state has always been noted as the hotbed. Whenever the political season comes around as the recent one that just finished, interest in what happens in this area always seems to be higher than in other parts of the state.

In the just concluded 2019 elections, again most of the attention was on the contest for the Senatorial seat of the Central District. It may be argued that here intrigues played out the most. Maybe this time due to the pedigree of those who sought to represent the district in the red chamber. The two main contenders in this category were the candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba and Dr. Sandy Onor respectively. The district is made up six local government areas which are Abi, Yakurr, Obubra, Ikom, Etung and Boki. Onor is from Etung while Ndoma-Egba is from Ikom.

Both have had great political careers and are grassroots politicians and stalwarts in their own rights. Onor, a former local government chairman and former Commissioner in the state, had even earned a name for himself in the political sphere. He is called the ‘Original Caterpillar.’ According to supporters, this name is due to his ability to bulldoze and get his way politically. Ndoma-Egba himself had served in the Senate for three consecutive terms since 2003 and had risen to the position of Senate Leader. Known for his visibility and eloquence in the red chamber, he was seen as the guy who got things done, and expectations seemed to be high in anticipation of his return.

It was like a battle of gladiators to say the least.

The seat they were aiming to get had been declared vacant by the incumbent, Senator John Owan-Enoh of the APC, who had declared his intention to run for the governorship of the state.

It is pertinent to point out that Ndoma-Egba lost out in the senatorial primary elections to Owan-Enoh in 2015, in a manner, which at the time, the former    considered controversial. Both of them were in the PDP then. The issues which arose at the time had led to Ndoma-Egba’s withdrawal from political activities for a while and a subsequent withdrawal from the PDP soon after. He often claimed he was ostracized by the party and given that he still had political life in him, had to look somewhere else to live it out. He joined the APC and the rest is history.

There were lots of other elections in the state, but everyone seemed to be talking about this particular one. It may be argued that even the governorship election did not generate as much interest as this one.

The elections eventually held on February 23, 2019 after being shifted from February 16. At the end of the day, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Onor was winner of the polls. According to the results announced by returning officer, Prof Ubana Eyong, Onor scored 80, 126 votes to beat Ndoma-Egba who got 60, 298.

However, even with the announcement of the results the intrigues seem not to be over yet, especially given allegations of rigging, violence, and the collusion of INEC and security agencies to work for the PDP, that trailed the exercise. It may not yet be Uhuru for the Caterpillar. Who knows?

It appears they may have been some sentiment in wanting Ndoma-Egba back in that he had acquired the ranking in his previous time in the Senate, which affords certain privileges a first timer would not get, and would have been advantageous to clinching the Presidency of the Senate. It was believed that given his legislative prowess and experience in tackling conflict situations, the Presidency may have wanted him to head the Red Chamber thereby making for smooth executive-legislature relation. But this cannot be verified.

What can be verified however is that Ndoma-Egba has already sent his petition to the tribunal in the state. The Election Petition Tribunal in Cross River State has so far received eleven petitions challenging the outcome of the last general elections in the state. The petitions received so far are only for the National Assembly elections held on February 23rd, 2019.

In his petition, Ndoma-Egba said among others: “In the late hours of 22nd February 2019, the eve of the elections, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Cross River State, Dr. Frankland Briyai announced to the world through the mass media that the All Progressives Congress had no candidates for the elections of the 23rd February, 2019 and 9thMarch, 2019… At the time of the announcement, there was a valid order of the Court of Appeal, Calabar, made on the 20th of February, 2019 that the status quo be maintained. Clearly the statement was premeditated and malafide,” he said.

Notwithstanding the petitions and protests against the REC, Dr. Briyai, he has said consistently that he was impartial in the elections and did not work for any political party.

So, as the battle shifts to the court, stakeholders are only holding their breath.

  • Stop whipping up primordial sentiments, group urges Atiku

The Buhari Media Organisation has asked former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to come to terms with his loss at the presidential election and stop whipping up what it described as primordial sentiments.

In a statement by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, BMO said Atiku’s latest meeting with some sectional leaders from southern Nigeria who backed his failed presidential bid “shows that Atiku is still in denial over his loss in the election”, saying it is part of a ploy to further widen the country’s fault-lines at a time the former Vice President is claiming to have a national mandate.

The statement said: “Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared President Muhammadu Buhari duly elected for a second term, the losing candidate had been laying claims to what he described as a stolen national mandate, but surprisingly he has been holding clandestine meetings with sectional heads.

“It is clearly a ploy by Atiku Abubakar to instigate political disaffection in a section of the country that gave him a large chunk of the votes he got on February 23, at a time he is also expressing optimism at getting a favourable response at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

“We at BMO see the move as unbecoming of a former Vice President who, in spite of losing by almost four million votes to a more popular President Buhari, still managed to get reasonable votes even from other parts of the country where he did not perform creditably.

“Even after an overwhelming majority of registered voters across the country turned their backs on Atiku Abubakar and his party, he believes that he could still use ‘restructuring’ as a gambit to poison the minds of people.

“But the former Vice President should realise, as an elder statesman, that now that elections are over and he has opted to exercise his democratic right to seek redress in court, he should not be seen in a gathering where comments like: ‘No restructuring, no Nigeria’ are made.

“We are convinced that Atiku’s loss shows that more Nigerians were not interested in the type of restructuring that Edwin Clark and the rump of Afenifere are mouthing.

“The nation’s unity should be paramount at this time and if there are wounds that needed to be healed after a bitter political campaign, this is the time for it, not for sabre-rattling.

“They have a right to support Atiku Abubakar to press on with his election petition, but they should also respect the right of the majority of Nigerians who are satisfied with the progress the country is making under President Buhari and who voted for continuity.”

  • Jonathan has no reason to quit PDP, says aide

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has no reason to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze said on Sunday.

Eze spoke while denying reports suggesting that Jonathan had resigned from the PDP and retired from active politics.

He said the report, which went viral on social media, was first published by an unknown website saying it was borne out of mischief.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a fake story published by an unknown website, alleging that former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan has quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Obviously, this is a fabrication  borne out of mischief as the publishers of the fake story claimed that the former President  made the statement while being  interviewed by Nigeria News Agency (NAN).

“There is absolutely no way the former President could have spoken to a non-existent news agency, as none in the country goes by that name.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Jonathan has no reason at this time to resign his membership of PDP, the party under which platform he became Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and President.

“Those who derive pleasure in spreading fake information had better occupy themselves with more productive endeavours that are obviously more relevant to nation building”.

  • No nation can grow with election rigging – Peter Obi

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23, 2019 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi has said that no nation can grow nation can grow with election rigging.

In a statement Sunday by his media office, Obi described election rigging as the worst form of vices, as he decried the “rigging” recorded in the 2019 general elections.

The former Anambra State Governor said that the process through which people come into office is far more important than what they do thereafter, adding that the process forms the basis of their integrity.

According to him, election rigging is the root of corruption, as it goes to impact negatively on the political and economic growth of the country.

The PDP vice presidential candidate noted that the “fraud” that characterised the 2019 elections has greatly undermined the country’s democracy.

He added that it has significantly damaged the future of the country, ridiculed the fight against vices and tainted the integrity of those responsible.

Obi further observed that the enormity of damage done to the collective psyche of the nation by electoral fraud cannot be quantified.

The opposition chieftain submitted that negative acts like election manipulation were part of the reasons the country is not growing and or tackle the existing myriads of problems like unemployment and its attendant vices.

“The only thing rigging does to a country is that it continues to keep incompetent people in office, and as a result, rather than put energy in creating jobs to engage its teeming youths, it instead channels it trying to contain all sorts of vices and brigandage”, Obi said.

He blamed the sustenance of incompetent persons in political offices on election rigging, saying that the trend has continued to cause harm to the society.

Mr. Obi charged leaders at all levels to be more concerned and strive to create jobs and engage millions of Nigerian youths roaming the streets doing nothing at their prime productive ages.

  • Rivers Guber: PDP urges INEC to declare Wike winner

Following the results of the fact finding committee set up by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the manifest disruption of the collation of the results of the 9th March 2019 Governorship and House of Assembly general elections, the state PDP has called on INEC to announce its candidate as winner of the election.

This is contained in the statement by the Rivers State PDP Chairman, Bro Felix Obuah, and made available to the Nation on Saturday.

The Rivers State PDP said it has accepted the pronouncements INEC made, after receiving the report of the fact finding committee, as substantial representation of the true state of the electoral process before the suspension.

According to the statement, “After a thorough and holistic review of the report and findings of its Committee, INEC has in a release on the night of Friday 15th March 2019 made three fundamental verdictson the elections in Rivers State, as follows:

    “It has the complete collated results of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in 17 local Government Areas of the State in safe custody;

“21 out of 32 State constituency results of the State had already been declared and returned as elected prior to when it suspended the electoral process in the State; and it would on 20th March 2019 issue detailed timelines and activities for the completion of the election in the State.”

The Rivers State PDP, however, wished to draw the INEC’s attention to the fact that in addition to the 17 Local Government Areas with fully collated results, the elections also successfully held and results declared at the unit and ward levels in five of the six other Local Government Areas where full collation of results is still pending.

The Rivers PDP therefore urged the INEC to follow its guidelines to fill the missing gap, if any, in the collation process for the remaining five Local Government Areas by generating the full results from the unit results already in its custody and declare our candidates the clear and unassailable winners of the 9th March 2019 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State.

“We commend the INEC for standing by the truth and for its courage and principled determination to ensure that the votes of the people of Rivers State as freely and overwhelmingly expressed on the 9th of March 2019 in favour of the PDP effectively count.

“We also commend the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Yusuf Tukur Buratai for inaugurating the Major-General TA Gagariga’s led Committee to probe the allegations of misconduct, including the assassination attempt on our Governor, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike by soldiers during the 2019 general elections,” the statement added.

The party also called on the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed Adamu to institute a similar panel to probe the brazen involvement of the Rivers State Commander of F-SARS, Mr. Akin Fakorode and his gang of police operatives in the organized invasion of polling units, collation centers, abduction of electoral officers and the shooting and killing of innocent persons during the general elections at Khana, Gokana, Ikwerre, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo and Ogu/Bolo Local Governments of the State.
