  • Kashamu holds Mega rally, rejects expulsion by PDP

… Says he remains full – fledge PDP member

Senator Buruji Kashamu on Thursday insisted that he remained a full – fledge member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying his alleged expulsion by the Party’s National Leadership cannot stand.

Kashamu, representing, Ogun East Senatorial District at the Senate  was expelled two weeks ago for alleged anti-party activities but addressing thousands of party supporters at a mega rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, he assured his cheering supporters a subsisting court order robustly protects his membership of PDP.

The mega rally was organised at the State Secretariat of the party on IBB Boulevard, Oke – Mosan, Abeokuta, as unity gathering where aspirants for various positions in the 2019 elections and placards bearing supporters besieged the venue.

Kashamu who is a major fianacier of the party since 2011, wondered how a committed member could be expelled, dismissing his alleged expulsion as a ruse and illegality that would not stand.

“How can somebody expel you when you are committed to the party, the party is not for an individual.

“I want to state authoritatively that I, Senator Buruji Kashamu remain PDP member up till today.

Any attempt to expel me will be an effort in futility because, I have an order that protects me from being expelled by anybody,” he said.

According to him, his battle with the “National leadership of the party is to liberate the masses from the oppressed.”

Also, the state factional Chairman, Bayo Dayo, who was also expelled by the Party Leadership said a Lagos High Court has recognised his executive as the authentic one and needed not be bothered by action that were in contempt of the court order.

To him, the Party’s leadership acted illegally hence their decision is null and void. Adding that INEC has recognized us as the authentic PDP in Ogun State and we are dealing directly with INEC.

  • ‘Those jumping from one party to another are butterfly politicians’

Labour leader and General Secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, Comrade Isa Aremu has said that those decamping from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) were butterfly politicians pursuing their personal ambition rather than the interest of the Nigerian people.

Aremu who formally declared his interest to contest the governorship seat in Kwara State on the platform of the Labour Party said that the statement by the Senate President that he was not given any juicy appointment out of the over 200 given by the federal government as one of the reasons for leaving the APC is a clear indication that he was pursuing personal interest.

He said those politicians crossing from one party to the other lack the required political ideology to be referred to as politicians, pointing out that during the second republic, politicians could not decamp from one party to the other without being ostracized.

He said what Kwara State need was not just electoral victory, but liberation, adding that despite being one of the oldest states in the country today, the stage has nothing to show and could not even successfully celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2017 when other states like Kano, Lagos and Rivers did same with fanfare.

He said: “We will not be butterfly politicians, but politicians in the real sense of it. We are not going to be moonlight politicians who move from one place to the other. My idea is to transform Kwara.

“I read Senator Saraki’s statement and one of the reasons he gave foe decamping was that the federal government gave 200 juicy appointments during this dispensation he said the government gave Katsina, Lagos and others, but never gave him. He spoke about himself and not Kwara.

“You said the government gave Katsina and that is Katsina even though you might say it is nepotism, but he said he was not given and not the state. The constitution says anybody in office should talk about welfare and security of the people. We will promote personal ethics and dignity of Labour.

“We have watched the decampment of the big political actors in Kwara State to the PDP. They have a right to that Democratic decision in choosing what they want to do. But what is worrisome to me is the ease with which politicians have become so insensitive to the plight of others.

“First, you left a party. With all the challenges, some people sat down there to build the party when you moved on to another party. All of a sudden, you have returned to edge them out.

“If you can do that within a party that gives you an idea of how they run the polity. I am making a pronouncement here that under us, we will be real politicians in the line of the politicians of old, politicians who had principles.

“What is important is that there was once a Nigeria where moving from one party to the other was a shame. You could not have left NPN and Move to UPN because that was a period of ideas.

“NPN stood for building houses and they were actually building those houses whether the opposition loved it or not. UPN stood for free education for all. PRP stood for redemption of the poor and they did that. The late Waziri Ibrahim stood for what he called politics without bitterness and he stood by it. I am sure he will be alarmed in his grave now to realize that where he comes from is now a theatre of war and violence.

“We are coming out of that angle where we will never violate the rights of our people and Labour Party is the only way to go. The Labour Party is the only party that carry human beings in its logo. People should be at the Centre of democracy and the end of development.”

Speaking on while he was joining the governorship race, Aremu said “My state needs liberation, not just electoral victory because we are disappearing from the map. Our state was created in 1967by Gen. Yakubu Gowon and was Infact the first to be created. There are about four of the, now that still retain their identity. Lagos state, Rivers, Kano and Kwara states.

“Last year, Kwara state was fifty years old. Lagos state celebrated with fanfare with Governor Ambrose lunching signature projects. Rivers state also celebrated in a big way, the same thing with Kano state. But my state which used to be the gateway to the north and south marked that anniversary as if they were celebrating funeral.

“This is a state where the political leaders celebrate wedding of their children for almost two months. In sha allahu, under us, we will celebrate state hood every year with Kwara day and bring back the sisterhood of the old state which include Kogi and Niger.

“I was a member of the national conference; Kwara is the only state without any document in terms of its vision for the state and the country. Other states did that. Under my leadership, there will be voice for Kwara. We will return development back to our people. We will return commonwealth back to our people.

“It does not make sense that you take stage resources to service few Zimbabwean farmers who produce products that are not available on our menu. Kwara resources will be for Kwara farmers so that they can feed all of us very well. We will stop the elitist projects.

“How can you be talking of building an aviation college when your people cannot move on the road? Even at that, i5 is cheaper for our children to go and study in South Africa than to go to that aviation college. You don’t fly on the air when your people are using meme NAPEP and Okada.

“By the grace of God, Kwara under our leadership will be part of the unity of Nigeria. It will not be part of the obstacle to development. We will redefine politics, not in terms of juicy appointments.”

  • 2019: PDP will field only popular candidate, says Dickson

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson on Thursday said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would field only popular candidates in 2019 general elections.

The governor called members of the party to work together in building a cohesive and united PDP ahead of the elections.

He warned party faithful against engaging in anti-party activities that could undermine PDP’s fortunes at the poll.

Dickson according to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) spoke at a consultative meeting with stakeholders of the PDP in Government House, Yenagoa.

Dickson warned that anti-party activities were capable of affecting the chances of the PDP adversely.

He said if the PDP must win all elective positions from the state to the national levels, members must learn to build consensus with the party’s leadership in the state.

Describing the meeting as a family affair, Dickson maintained that the party remained supreme and called on all to place the PDP’s interest above personal ambitions to enable them succeed in the forthcoming elections.

The governor also pointed out that the party should take great care in selecting candidates that could win elections at all levels.

He said the way of politicking by members of the PDP should change to reflect the opposition status of the party.

He insisted that the party’s success or failure depended largely on their actions and comments about their government back home.

He said: “In the last two and half years, things have not been the way we have known them to be. In 2015, your party and your state have been in opposition, with the kind of government that you all know is at the centre.

“Yet, we have all managed to do what we have done in very trying circumstances and in an uncharted territory.

“There is no other governor of this state that has that experience of leading a party to a battle when you are in opposition. And managing stability in the party, state and the government.

“I thank you all for the support and the prayers of all of you that have enabled me to lead the government of our party and also thank the state PDP chairman and Executive members for the stability in the party coordinated by experienced party leaders that have kept our party alive.

“For the first time since inception, our party is in opposition and that means that within the party, our way of politicking has to change to reflect the fact that you are in the opposition.

“And we need to know that our party’s chances of success or failure depend on your actions and comments publicly about your government back home.

“In the end, it is not you that is bigger than a system or government so you should proudly own the achievements of your government. In the end, it is not you that is bigger than a system or government so you should proudly own the achievements of your government.

“You want to spoil your own government even more than the opposition. That kind of evil politics has to stop. What they don’t know, is that, whatever they want to be and when we meet at the primary level, it is the strength of the party and government here led by me that you are going to battle with. That’s the reality.

“So it is amateurish for you to start politicking by attacking your own government and a government that everyone is celebrating. In what area have we not tried our best? You can’t solve all the problems of a people and of a state or a nation in 8 years though.

” In the last two and half years, we have been concentrating on working even when they bring issues, we brush it aside and concentrate on the work and that’s why you have these showings in all sectors.

“At the end of the day, people will judge us not by what other people didn’t do but what we have done. We are now getting to the stage of politicking where from the other side, they will see that there is a government and a party that is ready for them.

“From now on,  I will be interacting on how to build consensus in the local government areas for the various elective offices. I want you to take charge of the processes.

“I prefer the situation where the people themselves take ownership of our candidates. I frown against personal sentiments that will rob us of good candidates; we will overrule and override that. We want to support people that can win elections freely and fairly and such candidates should be able to understand and respond to challenges”.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the Party, Mr Moses Cleopas expressed optimism about PDP’s victory in the 2019 general elections and urged political appointees, who are prospective aspirants to resign on or before 15th August, 2018.

According to Mr Cleopas, 4th to 24th August is slated for the sale of forms for state and national assembly elections, while screening of aspirants would hold on the 27th of this month.

The PDP Chairman, who called on would be aspirants to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship before, during and after the elections, announced the 15th and 19thof September this year, as dates for the primaries for the state and national assembly elections.

  • We’ve started impeachment moves against Ortom – Hon. Ikyange

It’s illegal and unconstitutional – Governor

The impeached speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Terkimbir Ikyange said on Monday that the assembly has initiated impeachment moves against Governor Samuel Ortom.

This is coming at a time when another faction of the lawmakers under the new speaker Hon. Titus Uba said they have suspended the entire Ikyange led members for six (6) months.

Speaking to newsmen at his official residence after plenary, Ikyange stated that the house would communicate the notice of impeachment to the governor in seven (7) days.

Ikyange led twelve (12) lawmakers to plenary Monday under tight security.

He accused Ortom of embezzling state funds amounting to N55 Billion.

He stated that Ortom embezzled N33 billion through reduction of Local Government funds and used another N22 billion to shop for political platform before he decamped to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

According to Ikyange, as a result of the financial recklessness of Ortom civil servants in Benue state are being owned seven (7) months salaries, while local government are owned eleven (11) month and pensioners fourteen (14) months .

He said the impeachment moves against Ortom also has to do with his non-performance in office.

But reacting, Ortom dismissed the allegations of fraud and non – performance as blatant lies.

The Governor said he has worked with the Speaker for three (3) years but he did not raise the issue of fraud and wondered why the issue is coming now after he defected to the PDP.

“The only crime against me is I enacted “anti – Open grazing prohibition law which is the product of the People of Benue State.”

Ortom pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Inspector – General of Police (IGP) and DSS to order, as according to him “democracy is about rule of law.”

He said eight (8) members of the House cannot over rule twenty two (22) members.

“All that they are trying to do is to change the narratives against me and demobilized me.”

  • Tackle inflated contracts, budgets – Presidential aspirant tells Buhari

A presidential aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed has identified the bogus annual budgets and inflation of government contracts by civil servants and politicians as the main bane of the unbridled corruption ravaging the country’s economy.

Datti who stated this while speaking to reporters in Kano on how he intended to rule the country, said if elected, his administration would utilize billions of Naira saved from blockages to increase salary of workers, particularly teachers.

According to him, “if this trend is not checked, the issue of fighting corruption by the Buhari administration will be a nullity because most of the people in this government are reaping tremendously from such anomalies.

“This is what a responsible leader should be able to do. The President should announce to the world that he has banned the practice of inflating government contracts. I must emphasize that inflating government contracts give rise to poverty and laziness.”

If elected Senator Datti said he would use, “the excess money generated from blocking inflated government contracts to double minimum wage of lowest paid civil servants such as teachers and security personnel

“Any society in which the minimum wage of junior staff will not take him to the last day of the month, that society has a problem.”

He also regretted that, “ninety nine per cent of Nigeria’s budgets are expended on inflated government contracts, as we are only getting about ten percent out of it, adding that, “most of the vices of insecurity, bad governance and poverty was as a result of the over five decades of inflating government contracts.”

He also faulted Buhari’s government policy on foreign exchange, noting that, “if there is anything that is capable of tearing Nigeria apart, it is non-stability of the Naira. Every Naira that falls against the dollar is a threat to our living standard.

“It is so unfortunate that we have have seen Naira falls from one hundred and eighty five to one dollar during Jonathan’s regime to five hundred and twenty in the beginning of this administration.

“Because only family and friends of those in power recieve FOREX from CBN, and they are making two hundred Naira per every dollar sold. My fear is if Buhari return in 2019 the Naira may likely fall to seven hundred and fifty to a Dollar.”

Senator Baba-Ahmed said he is aspiring to become president to save Nigeria from catastrophe, pledging that, “if elected, I will stabilize Naira through liberalizing foreign exchange and develop a strategic policy that will attract investors and Nigerians in Diaspora to send and invest more money into the Nigeria’s economy.”

  • PDP alleges plot to impeach Fayose

The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged plots by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to impeach Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.

A statement on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, cautioned the sponsors of the alleged plot to desist or attract “dire consequences”.

The PDP further alleged that the impeachment plot was being arranged in connivance with the Police, warning the development was a recipe for crisis in the state.

The statement said, “The PDP is aware that the plot is a desperate bid by the APC to rush into the Ekiti Government House to remove and tamper with documents and evidence confirming the rigging of the July 14 governorship election, ahead of the sitting of the election tribunal.

“Having realised that there is no way their daylight robbery at the poll can stand in the court, the APC is now employing all desperate means to subvert the course of Justice.

“This explains why a detachment of the Police can be hurriedly deployed to besiege the Ekiti State Assembly Complex last night without a formal request by the Speaker, the Clerk or the Sergeant-at-Arms, who is the chief security officer of the complex.

“The PDP states that any resort to underhand measures to impeach Fayose, without the constitutionally required 2/3 of the members of the House, particularly at this time, when the lawmakers are currently on their annual recess, will surely be resisted by our members”

Accusing the APC of plotting crisis all over the nation and resorting to the use of harassment, intimidation and brute force against the people and democratic institutions, the PDP warned that the development portends grave danger for the nation.

“Now that the political and parliamentary establishment of the Ekiti House of Assembly has loudly declared that they do not require the services of the detachment of policemen, PDP charges the APC to immediately withdraw their armed agents from the premises of the House of Assembly.

“Finally, the PDP urges the judiciary to be firm in standing by the truth on the Ekiti election and not be cowed or intimidated by the threats and pressure coming from the APC.

“Nigerians know the truth regarding the rigging of the Ekiti guber election by the APC and are now looking up to the judiciary for justice in the matter”, the statement added.

  • Former APC Senators, Reps to work for Buhari – Presidency

The last may not have been heard about the Tuesday’s defection of 13 Senators and 37 House of Representatives members from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The Presidency Thursday said that it has received the commitment of the defectors to work for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 election.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Affairs, Senator Ita Enang, made the stunning clarification at a press briefing in Abuja.

Enang noted that most of the defectors expressed intention to work for and with President Buhari to ensure his re-election in 2019.

Read Also:Buhari: defection a seasonal occurrence

He said that the defectors came to the conclusion to work for Buhari’s re-election because they were convinced that their problems were domestic and internal to the political structure of their respective states which had nothing to do with President Buhari.

Asked to name defectors who gave the assurance to work for Buhari in 2019 Enang parried the question.

He simply said, “It will be improper and breach of confidentiality for me and for the persons to be named but I have had discussions with them. Most of them are coming back and most of them are defecting to political parties that are not challenging the APC.”

Asked whether Senate President, Bukola Saraki was invited to the meeting President Buhari held with APC senators at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, Enang said that the senators were led by Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan.

The presidential aide said that National Assembly members should bear in mind important pending issues even as they go on vacation.

Enang said, “These senators by virtue of their procedure have not yet fully and effectually deflected but have expressed intention to defect by the procedure.

As a political party interacting with the leadership of the APC and other parties there is a lot of room left “for conciliation and reconciliation.

Again all the grievances expressed by the Distinguished Senators and Honourable members non is attributed or directed to  President Muhammadu Buhari nor his actions or any action or commission or omission  of the President or the Federal Government.

“In my interaction pre and post expression of intent to defect by the Distinguished Senators and members,  all the dramatis personae, the Distinguished Senators and Honourable members expressed their solidarity and support for Mr. President and  expressed categorically that their grievances and consequent actions are not directed against President Buhari nor his reelection in 2019 but domestic actors in their constituencies political fields such as the governors, state party leaders or frustration over zoning or indeed calculations for a return ticket or platform  for 2019 elections.

“Indeed a great number of them have indicated that even if they pursue their bid on different platforms, they will still campaign for President Buhari in 2019 on the platform of the APC.

“What have been done by the Distinguished Senators and Honourable members are group notice to switch camp.  It is inchoate and lives windows, doors and rooms for further consultations and resolutions because our party, the APC minds and cares for all members in or out of office.

“Like the Holy Bible enjoins, if you loss one sheep out of hundred, preserve 99 and go and search for the lost one sheep.

“ I believe that all if you saw perhaps this morning that at the interactive between the distinguished Senators of APC and M. President which lasted till the early hours of this morning, some of the Distinguished Senators who expressed defection to other parties or intended defection have returned to the fold of the APC.

They were with Mr. President and those who were not there, because the notice was short some of them could not return and most of them will still be joining further interaction within the weekend with the leadership of the party.

“There has been a lot of return and a lot of calm on the family of the APC.

“The executive, president and ministers will keep working with the legislature with respect due their offices and person and keep working with them as legislators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who make laws for the executive to execute irrespective of their individual political decisions while leaving all options open for conciliation.

We will be praying the legislature, the leadership, membership to consider that there are many matters of very urgent nature which are pending before the legislature and unless considered, the functioning of certain institutions of the government will be hampered. If you recall a lot of the funding for the 2018 budget was budgeted to come from some external sources.

The request for approval to raise funds from these external sources is before the legislature and unless considered it may hamper the level of implementation.

Again, before the legislature proceeded on vacation, Mr. President also laid before them the request for virement, this also will be affected.

Mr. President had earlier on laid the request for the application of some security funds for the purchase of Tucano jets to fight insurgency that is still pending.

There is also the budget which is pending. You remember the president laid before the National Assembly some times in November last year the 2018 budget. It was the budget of the Federal Government and the budget of the government-owned corporations, what has been passed in 2018 is the budget of the Federal Government and the budget of the Federal Government corporations has not yet been passed.

“You know that these budgets also include provisions for employment, provisions for capital spending which will affect the run of the economy, functioning and a lot other economy unless the legislature considers this, the executive is very law abiding and will not do a thing which the law requires the legislature to do, to approve first before it is done unless it is done. We will be praying the legislature to consider the emergency implications of this and decide to come out of this and consider this within the period of the vacation.

“We accept that some exigencies may have caused the abridgment of the time within which they were to proceed on vacation.

“We will be working with them to ensure that we have few of these considered and passed within a time that it will still be reasonable to attain the purpose of the economy.

“All of them have said that they do not have a problem with the president.

“These persons have expressed intention to work for and with President Buhari; all these are domestic and internal to the political structure of the respective states and has to do with the 2019 electoral calculations.

“Some of them are questions that have to do with zoning. The president said that he is aware of the issues that they have. The questions that have arisen in this matter are party matters domestic to the different states. The national office of the party is handling the issues.”

Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), has called on Nigerians to support genuine efforts geared toward deepening democracy in the country.

Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties, made the call in Umuahia when he addressed the executive members and stakeholders of the party in Abia.

“We believe in the rule of law. We must do everything to ensure that this democracy is not derailed,” he said.

Turaki decried the spate of killings of innocent Nigerians across the country, ethnicity, maladministration and corruption, saying such activities had become the order of the day.

He said such activities were inimical to democracy and urged Nigerians to be vigilant and elect credible leaders in 2019.

“We have started a journey to reclaim our country and reclaim our future. Nigerians must rise to say that enough is enough.

“We must be vigilant; otherwise, we will repeat a mistake that was made in 2015. We must be prepared to change what we do not like.

“If we want to have peace, there must be justice. We must begin to talk to each other about certain critical national issues,” Turaki said.

He condemned the alleged harassment of the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, and his Deputy, Sen.  Ike Ekweremadu,  by security agencies.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to forestall a repeat of such development.

Turaki also spoke on the agitation for the restructuring of Nigeria, saying that restructuring could be addressed through regionalism, resource control and state police.

In his speech, the state Chairman of PDP, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, thanked Turaki for identifying with the people of Abia.

Onuigbo said that the 2019 general elections would offer Nigerians an opportunity to evolve a lasting solution to the challenges facing the nation.

  • Defection: We still retain majority seats in Senate- Lawan

The Senate caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that it still retains majority seats in the upper legislative chamber despite the defection on Tuesday of 14 of its members to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Briefing journalists after an emergency meeting held shortly after the plenary session, the senators said the defection did not in any relegate them to minority status in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader, Ahmed Lawan who spoke on behalf of his colleagues said the APC still has 52 members, while the PDP has 50.

Senator Joshua Dariye who is presently serving a 14-year jail term was counted among the 52 senators of the APC.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has three; the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has two. There are two vacant seats occasioned by the death of two senators from Bauchi and Katsina.

Lawan said the APC would win back the two vacant seats occupied by Senator Ali Wakili (Bauchi) and Mustapha Bukar (Katsina) until their death recently.

This, according to him, would raise the membership strength of the party to 54.

  • Defection: No cause for alarm, APC assures members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it respect the right of Nigerians to freely belong to any political association of their choice, saying in spite of the defection which has made the party a minority in the state, there was no cause for alarm.

APC said it will continue to work hard to reposition the party for greater efficiency.

Reacting to the defection of some members of the party to the opposition party the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi ask party members across the country to remain calm as the party still have control of about 25 states in the country.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) notes the development in the National Assembly with the defection of some of our members from the Party.

“In the last couple of weeks our Party leaders have worked to stave off this situation as responsible Party leaders would do. It would appear however that the individuals involved have different considerations beyond the grievances that they were willing to discuss and which our leaders were willing to address.

“As a truly democratic party, we respect the right of every citizen to political association. Therefore, we urge our members to remain calm as we continue to work hard to position our party strongly for the next general elections.  APC remains in firm control of 25 states of the 36 states of the federation and maintains a clear majority in the federal House of Representatives and state assemblies.

“We assure members and supporters that our great Party will continue to consolidate on our majority status in the build-up to the 2019 General Elections, even as our government continue to work hard to deliver on our promises to Nigerians.”
