  • Alaibe should first apologise to PDP, says party members

PEOPLES Democratic Party  (PDP) stakeholders in Bayelsa State, on Friday asked a former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Ndutimi Alaibe, to first tender unreserved public apology to loyal members of the party  before thinking of using the platform to run for any election.

The stakeholders under the auspices of the Bayelsa PDP Restoration Foot Soldiers (BPRFS) said Alaibe lacked the moral right to vie for the PDP ticket having serially betrayed the party especially at its trying times.

The group in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Ebi Lawson, said it was against the principles of natural justice, equity and good conscience for Alaibe to be making efforts to harvest in a farm he failed to cultivate.

The scribe further said it was an insult to loyal members of the party for Alaibe to have gone to obtain his nomination and  expression of interest forms at the PDP headquarters in Abuja in the company of persons, who had yet to vacate allegations of anti-party activities against them during the last elections in the state.

The group said: “Undoubtedly, Alaibe has the constitutional right to contest the forthcoming governorship election in Bayelsa, but Alaibe without publicly apologizing to all loyal members of the PDP in Nigeria and especially in Bayelsa is not qualified to be called a member of the PDP not to talk of contesting any election on the platform of the party.

“He lacks the moral right and the locus standii to be found among loyal party aspirants and he will continue to carry that moral burden until such a time he realizes the importance of loyalty and commitment to a political party.

“It is on record that Alaibe betrayed the PDP when the party needed men of character, will and purpose to survive the hurricane of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Immediately the APC emerged at the federal level, Alaibe abandoned the PDP, jumped to the APC and tried to become its governorship candidate in Bayelsa.

“At that moment and for the purpose of realizing his ambition only, he fought the PDP joining forces with the APC to uproot and dismantle the PDP in Bayelsa. He complicated the efforts of Governor Seriake Dickson and his dedicated restoration PDP members to fight for the survival of the PDP in Bayelsa. But Dickson and his team survived the volcano and nurtured PDP back to life.

“He came back last year and since then had done nothing but to scheme his way to grab the governorship ticket of our party. And on July 4th’ we saw him at the Wadatta Plaza obtaining the forms of our party. To us his journey to Wadatta plaza will end in fiasco because any aspiration of Alaibe in Bayelsa PDP is a failed project.

“We want to advise Alaibe to first and foremost apologize to the party for serially betraying it and joining forces with our detractors to end our existence. After the apology, Alaibe should exercise patience and show commitment in building a political party before thinking of using the party to run for an election. Alaibe must know that there are consequences for disloyalty”.

  • Osun: Jubilation as Supreme Court upholds Oyetola’s election

    • Why court dismissed Adeleke’s appeal

    • APC, Buhari, Tinubu, others congratulate governor

    • It’s time to move forward, says Oyetola

    • Adeleke: my ambition was never a do or die affair

The streets of Osogbo and other communities in Osun State erupted in excitement on Friday as the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Gboyega Oyetola as the governor of the state.

The apex court’s endorsement of Oyetola’s mandate followed its dismissal of the four appeals filed by Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election.

The appeals by Adeleke and his party were against the May 9, 2019 judgments of the Court of Appeal, Abuja which voided the majority judgment of the election tribunal and affirmed the election of Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Osun State.

The four appeals were marked: SC/553/2019; SC/554/2019; SC/555/2019 and SC/556/2019.

The Supreme Court, in a majority decision of five-to-two, read by Justice Olabode Rodes-Vivour, held that the majority judgment given by the election tribunal in favour of Adeleke and the PDP was a nullity.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour held that the tribunal was not properly constituted when it gave its decision in view of the non-participation of one of the tribunal members in one of the sittings where trial was conducted and vital documents admitted in evidence.

The judge, in the lead majority judgment, agreed with lawyer to Oyetola, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) that the failure of a member of the election tribunal, Justice Peter Obiora, to sit on February 6, 2019 rendered the entire proceedings and the judgment given by the tribunal a nullity.

The judgment by Rhodes-Vivour was on the appeal marked SC/553/2019, which was directed at the Court of Appeal’s judgment in the appeal filed by Oyetola against the majority decision of the election tribunal.

The court noted that Justice Obiora was absent on February 6, 2019 when the respondents’ witnesses (RWs) 12 and 13 – Ayoola Soji and Oladejo Kazeem – testified and tendered exhibits, which the tribunal admitted in evidence.

The apex court held that having not attended the tribunal’s siting on February 6, 2019, Justice Obiora did not see the two witnesses and was unable to examine their demeanour, as required, and therefore, it was wrong for the judge to have authored a judgment in which he reviewed the evidence given by the witnesses.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour added: “As rightly pointed out by the learned senior counsel for the first respondent, Chief Wole Olenipekun (SAN), learned counsel for the appellant, O. Ikpeazu (SAN) also held the view that Obiora J did not sit on the 6th of February 2019.

“At no time did Ikpeazu dispute the proceedings of the 6th of February2019. It was observed that at the election tribunal, Obiora J signed the record of proceedings at the end of every proceeding, except on the 6th of February 2019 when he did not sign at the end of the proceedings.”

Justice Rhodes-Vivour said after examining the submissions of counsel and the record of appeal, “I hold the position that Obiora J did not sit on the said day.

“What then is the implication of that on the proceedings conducted and the judgment delivered by the tribunal?

“The Supreme Court has always set aside the judgments of the trial courts where the panels have been irregular and inconsistent.

“An examination of the record of appeal reveals that well over 90 persons gave evidence, and at the end of each day’s proceedings, three judges, who included Obiora J, signed. It was only the proceedings of the 6th of February 2009 that was not signed by Obiora J.

“That was the day when the testimonies of RW12 and RW13 were taken. They were cross examined and vital documents admitted in evidence, which counsel agreed, at the Court of Appeal, that Obiora J did not sit on the 6th of February 2019 and so, he could not have signed the proceedings of that day.

“The failure of Oboira J to sit on the 6th of February 2019 renders the proceedings of that day worthless and the entire judgment a nullity.

“The correct order to make in this circumstance is to declare the entire judgment of the tribunal a nullity as a result of the fact that one of the members of the panel did not sit on a day proceedings were held.

“The learned counsel to the appellants ought to have advised his clients that the failure of Obiora J to sit on the 6th of February, 2019, but prepared the majority judgment, is a fundamental flaw.

“The tribunal was not properly constituted as regard the number of its members on the 6th of February 2019.

“The absence of Obiora J from the proceedings of the 6th of February 2019 affected the competence of the tribunal to deliver the judgement in any form.”

Justice Rhodes-Vivour proceeded to set aside the entire proceedings of the tribunal and its judgement delivered in favour of Adeleke and the PDP.

He upheld the majority judgement of the Court of Appeal, which earlier voided the tribunal’s judgement and affirmed the victory of Governor Oyetola.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour added: “I affirm the majority judgment of the Court of Appeal.

“The majority judgment of the tribunal is a nullity.

    “The preliminary objection is overruled.

    “The appeal is dismissed.”

The judge also dismissed two other similar appeals filed by Adeleke, marked: SC/554/2019 and SC/555/2019.

Both appeals were against the Court of Appeal judgments in the appeals by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC against the majority judgment of the tribunal.

Justices Ibrahim Muhammad (Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria), Kudirat Kekerere-Ekun, Amiru Sanusi and Uwani Abba-Aji agreed with the lead majority judgment as delivered by Justice Rhodes-Vivour.

Justice Abba-Aji read the lead majority judgment in the second appeal marked: SC/556/2019, which challenged the legality of the supplementary election conducted in Osun after INEC declared the first election inconclusive.

Justice Abba-Aji said in view of the court’s position in the earlier judgment, to the effect that the majority judgment of the tribunal was a nullity, it was unnecessary to consider other issues raised in the appeal.

Justices Kumai Akaahs and Paul Galumje gave the dissenting judgments in both cases in which they allowed the two appeals.

In his contribution, Akaahs said: “I wish to say that INEC is supposed to be an umpire and not an interested party.

“In this particular case, INEC used its manual to cancel an election in some polling units and declared the election inconclusive when the appellant had scored the highest number of votes and got the required spread of two-thirds of the votes in the 25 per cent of the Local Government Areas.

“‎They ought to have declared the appellant the winner, but INEC had something up its sleeves and it was able to achieve that by the rerun, whereby the 2nd respondent (Oyetola) had ‎400 plus votes as against the 1st appellant (Adeleke), who had 300 plus.

“Whereas in the election of September 22, 2018, after the illegal cancellation of some results, the 1st appellant had scored the majority votes of 300,000 plus votes‎.

“INEC has always used the rerun election to do what it likes. This should not continue.

“On that basis, I hold that the 1st appellant, having scored the highest number of lawful votes and had the spread, he ought to be declared the winner, and I so declare.”

    Jubilation in Osogbo, other communities

Residents of Osun State on Friday trooped out in solidarity with the State governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, following the Supreme Court judgement which affirmed him as the winner of the September 22, 2018 governorship election.

Residents of the state went into wild jubilation, moving in groups from one location to another and singing victory songs.

The popular Olaiya junction and Nelson Mandela Freedom Park were among the places where residents converged to sing and dance to Oyetola’s victory.

Addressing his supporters at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Oyetola said since the matters of the last governorship election had been laid to rest by the courts, all stakeholders should come together to move the state forward.

Oyetola said: “It is time to move forward. I extend hands of friendship to the opposition. We are all Omoluabi. I will focus on security, peoples’ welfare, especially women.”

My ambition was never a do or die affair, says Adeleke

The PDP candidate in the election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on Friday congratulated Governor Oyetola on his victory at the Supreme Court.

Adeleke, in a statement issued by his media aide, Olawale Rasheed, said his ambition to become the governor of Osun State was never a do or die affair.

Adeleke said the judgement of the Supreme Court, being the apex court in the land, “regardless of my disagreement and disappointment, remains final.”

He said: “As a democrat and law abiding citizen, I accept the ruling no matter my misgiving. I wish Governor Oyetola well in the governance of Osun state.”

He expressed gratitude to his teeming supporters, leaders and members of the PDP for their “massive support throughout the duration of the case,” lauding “our high spirit and commitment to the cause of democracy, which we championed from last year till date.”

He continued: “In all circumstances, we must thank God Almighty. We gallantly fought a good fight in pursuit of a democratic cause. The ideals we fought for live on.

“Our ambition was never a do or die affair. We aspired to serve and deliver democratic dividends to the people of Osun State.

“Our ambition was altruistic. We wish Governor Oyetola the best in governance of the state.”

PDP shocked at judgment, calls for calm, unity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday expressed shock at the judgement of the Supreme Court which affirmed Mr Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Osun State.

In a statement issued by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said the fact that the Supreme Court had a split judgment also spoke volumes on its verdict in this matter.

The statement said: “Our study of the judgment however shows that the Supreme Court did not negate the position of the PDP and millions of Nigerians that our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, won the election, but based its verdict on reservations over issues of technicalities arising at the election petition tribunal.

“Nevertheless, our party stands with overwhelming majority of Nigerians on that undeniable fact that the people of Osun State, by the votes cast at the poll, preferred Senator Adeleke as their governor.

“The PDP, as a law-abiding party, however, urges the people of Osun State to remain united, calm and not lose hope in our democratic process and the quest for a government that truly represents their wishes and aspirations.”

  • Atiku sues Buhari’s aide Lauretta Onnochie for N2.5bn

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has sued the Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari,  Lauretta Onochie, for her alleged libelous tweet via her twitter handle on May 7, 2019.

In the suit filed on June 26, 2019 before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Atiku claimed Onochie alleged in her post, that he was on the watch list of security operatives in the United Arab Emirates and had travelled to shop for terrorists in the Middle East.

In a supporting affidavit, Atiku, a former Vice President, denied the allegation contained in the said tweet and stated that the tweet was “politically orchestrated” “solely to cause maximum damage” to his “high reputation.”

Atiku stated that: “To say that the claimant is shopping for terrorists knowing same to be untrue and without any foundation is not only dishonest and reckless, but is calculated and politically designed to instigate security agents against him not only in the UAE, but across the world,” he stated in his statement of claim accompanying the suit.

In a statement of claim, Atiku said he had in a May 14, 2019 letter, demanded an apology, retraction and payment of N500m compensation from Onochie “to assuage” the damage allegedly caused him by her social media post.

Atiku stated that even when he threatened to sue her should she fail to accede to the demand within 48 hours, Onochie was unmoved by his demand letter, Atiku noted that rather than show “remorse by retracting her earlier publication”, she further, on May 20, made “another derogatory publication and also published same globally online in the social and other print media” against his person.

He said sometimes in May this year, he had  embarked on a foreign trip to the UAE as he had done over the years, and while on the said trip, Onochie on  May 7, 2019, wrote, through her twitter handle:

“Atiku on UAE watchlist- Security sources Security operatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are keeping a close tab on a former Nigerian Vice Pres Atiku Abubakar who has been in the Middle East nation for several weeks now What is he doing there? Me: Shopping for Terrorists?”

The claimant said “the defamatory publication” was also published by several newspapers nationwide and on several social media news.

He denied the allegations contained in the said publication which he described as “a figment of the imagination of the defendant”, but said it portrayed him “as an evil man, mentor of terrorists, someone who has links with terrorists, and a person who is interested in destabilising the peace and unity of Nigeria.

“The publication also portrayed the claimant as a security threat and terrorist to right thinking members of the public and the society at large.

“The odious publication has clearly rubbished the claimant’s image and reputation. It has caused him national and international backlash and embarrassment and has done incalculable damage to him.

“He has thereby been subjected to the shame and infamy of being viewed by members of the public as not only corrupt, but as a terrorist and sponsor of terrorism.”

Atiku claimed that following the publication, he received numerous telephone calls, emails, visits, letters and private social media chats by his family members, friends, political and business associates, and international statesmen and women, confirming “the alarm and serious concerns generated by the defendant’s false publication.”

The claimant said he would tender the call logs showing the text messages, and calls received by him in the aftermath of Onochie’s post.

He described “the entire opprobrious and denigrating story” as “most misleading, baseless, false, malicious and totally bereft of any foundation howsoever”.

He noted that the “inference and grave conclusions” contained in the postwere “politically orchestrated” and “invented by the defendant and others of her ilk, solely to cause maximum damage to the high reputation of the claimant, who is currently before the Election Petition Tribunal against her employer and boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, challenging the latter’s purported victory in the last presidential election.”

The claimant said contrary to the said “derogatory, disparaging, mendacious and unrestrained defamatory statement, as published in various print, electronic and online media platforms” he had “never been on the security watch list of the UAE, or any other country, for that matter.

“He has neither ever been denied entry into, interrogated, nor been declared wanted by the UAE Authorities, or any of its security agencies.

“That Claimant was at the time of the said publication in the UAE and was never accosted by any security agencies over the said frivolous and baseless allegations.”

Atiku is praying for among others, a declaration that the publications made by Onochie via her social media accounts on May 7, and May 20, 2019, concerning and touching on his “are utterly false, baseless, unfounded and defamatory of the Claimant, and injurious to his reputation.”

He wants the court to direct the defendant to pay him N2,500,000,000,000 “representing general, aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages over the untold embarrassment, derision, public ridicule, odium, obloquy, marital disharmony,  mental agony and psychological trauma which the defendant’s publications have caused the claimant.”

Atiku wants the court to compel the defendant to retract the publication and offer an apology to him “for the said offensive twitter and facebook publications on the same platforms, also to be published in three national newspapers with wide circulation within the country and also broadcast on AIT, Channels and NTA television stations.”

The claimant antsan order of perpetual injunction restraining her whether by herself, her servants, agents, privies, assigns, friends and /or  representatives, or otherwise howsoever, from further posting such “offensive and libelous material or any other form of defamatory statements against his person.

  • PDP urges Buhari, Osinbajo to make public their assets

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to publicly declare their assets.

The party made the call in a statement issued by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr Diran Odeyemi, on Friday in Abuja.

Odeyemi also urged the President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to also make public their assets.

He said that the call is important as the Code of Conduct Bureau is insisting that it could not release details of assets of the President and other top officials without their consent.

Odeyemi said that public declaration of the assets would go along way  to convince Nigerians that the national leaders are  indeed partners in the fight against corruption.

“The party therefore called on all high- ranking political office holders to waive the caveat placed on the Code of Conduct Bureau and make their asset known to Nigerians,” he said.

He recalled that former Chief Justice of the Federation, Walter Onnoghen was prosecuted for not declaring in full his asset.

He advised that other top government officials should submit themselves for public scrutiny through public declaration of what they own as asset.

“We are of the opinion that Buhari,  Osinbajo, Lawan and Gbajabiamila should declare openly their assets to allow Nigerians to further see how much wealth they have acquired since joining government,” he said.

Odeyemi urged  Buhari and other top government officials to be more coordinated and exhibit transparency not only in fighting graft but in their dealings with Nigerians.

  • PDP knocks INEC, group over server

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) knocked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for allegedly sponsoring an “amorphous” group to support the denial by the Commission of existence of a central server.

The group, under the aegis of Forum of Presidential Candidates of the 2019 Elections and National Party Chairmen, had, at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, hailed the denial by INEC of the existence of the server.

Recall that the presidential election petition tribunal had on Monday, rejected the request by the candidate of the PDP in the February 23 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP to allow them access to INEC server.

But in a statement Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party said its investigation revealed that the group was hurriedly “conjured” by the leadership of INEC and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Ologbondiyan, the main objective of the group was  to assist INEC in distorting facts and making misrepresentations on a matter that are already subjudice.

This, the spokesman added, was an attempt to help clean up INEC’s blunders on the existence of the server, sway judicial pronouncements and influence public opinion on extant matters in court.

Read Also: PDP, Atiku lose battle to access INEC’s server

The statement said, “The PDP invites Nigerians to note that the press release by this nebulous group emerged after INEC’s several blunders while the Presidency has already admitted that the claim by the PDP and millions of Nigerians that INEC had a server wherein it stored results of the 2019 elections, constitutes the fulcrum of contention in the Presidential election.

“Nigerians are already aware of the existence of the server, which was duly budgeted for, set up in various INEC offices and in which data from the elections, including results, were stored. Moreover, the ruling of the Court of Appeal preventing the PDP from inspecting the server does not in any way obviate the existence of the said server.

“Furthermore, PDP counsels that instead of engaging in this unnecessary media trial, INEC should have listed its nebulous group as witness in the election tribunal.

“We also challenge INEC to confront the indictment contained in the reports of the European Union and other international agencies which showed evidence that the 2019 general elections were marred by irregularities and violation of rules by the Commission.

“It is therefore unfortunate that at a time when the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ought to be apologizing to Nigerians for the failure of the commission he leads to conduct a credible, free and fair election, a mass electoral failure consequent upon which the nation has over 766 election cases across the country, his commission is now contracting faceless groups to launder its sinking image and pass a confidence vote on Yakubu.

“The PDP therefore counsels INEC to own up to its failures put an end to its consistent denials on the existence of the server as justice will be served at the end of the day”.

  • Groups, PDP stalwart to Oshiomhole: stay away from Bauchi Assembly’s crisis

Two groups – Bauchi State Concern Citizens and Coalition for Progressive Political Parties (PPP) –  have urged All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to stop interfering in the crisis that greeted the inauguration of the 9th Bauchi Assembly, where two Speakers were elected.

The Bauchi State Concern Citizens said since the state was not an APC controlled state,  any further attempt  to cause chaos  by any person or group would not be tolerated.

A statement signed  by the group’s secretary, Aliyu Ladan and Public Relations Officer (PRO) yesterday, said: “The recent attempt by some unscrupulous, unpatriotic and unprogressive politicians to cause chaos and confusion during the inauguration of the 9th Assembly members is really unfortunate and such similar attitude could not be tolerated in future, for the overall interest of peace, progress and stability in the state.

“The successful inauguration of the 9th Assembly and the peaceful conduct of the election of the leadership in the House was a clear testimony of a true democracy and good governance.

“The entire process of the inauguration of the House members and the conduct of election of their leadership was in accordance with the Standing Order of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Act of 2015, which enable the one-third members of the House to legislate freely and as well as to decide to elect their leaders.

“Therefore, one-third of the members have made quorum and, as such, their decision and resolution are valid upon all their members.”

“Comrade Oshiomhole should stay away from the affairs of Bauchi State, since the state is not an APC-controlled government. Any attempt to cause chaos or trouble in the state by any person or group of persons of whatever status or capacity will not be tolerated or condoned by our government.”

Also, PPP, which comprises of 30 political parties, said yesterday that the APC National Chairman was not  abreast of the full fact of what played out at the inauguration of the 9th Assembly last Thursday.

Addressing a news conference on Monday, the PPP Chairman, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Green Party of Nigeria, Bauchi State Chapter, Mohammed Burra,  called on the APC National Chairman to stop interfering in Bauchi State’s matters.

Burra said  a quorum was formed before the election of the Assembly Speaker.

He alleged that 13 out of the 31 members in the House participated in the election.

Burra said the Speaker, who was inaugurated is an APC member and the members that elected the Speaker are from all the political parties, including the APC.

Burra said after the election, another set of APC members came out from a hideout, parading another person as Speaker.

He hailed Commissioner of Police Habu Sani Ahmadu for dousing the tension in a professional manner.

A  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrin, also  queried  the APC National Chairman for calling out Governor  Bala Mohammed over alleged involvement  in the confusion that ensued after the Assembly’s inauguration.

He said the members of Assembly have decided by electing Abubakar Suleiman as their Speaker.

However, the state government insisted that Sueiman Abubakar, who is representing Ningi Constituency is the recognised Speaker, having been elected by 11 lawmakers in the House.

Reacting to the development, the governor’s spokesperson, Dr. Ladan Salihu,  said the governor never meddled in the Assembly’s election.

  • Cracks in PDP over probe of Senators, Reps

PLAN by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to probe its members for voting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the recent election of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President as well as the House of Representatives Speaker and Deputy Speaker is now causing ripples in the opposition party.

Although the PDP directed its members to back Alhaji  Ali Ndume for Senate President and Umar Bago for House of Reps Speaker, the result of the elections showed that many of the lawmakers ignored  their party’s directive.

Spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologondiyan, told reporters at the end of the  86th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party that a committee would soon be set up to unravel the roles played by PDP legislators in the election of the leadership of the National Assembly.

Ologbondiyan’s announcement is now causing disquiet within the party with members taking different positions.

Earlier during the meeting, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, had condemned what he called the disloyal attitude of PDP senators and Reps members who defied the directives of the opposition party and voted for Senator Ahmed Lawan and Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Shortly after Lawan and Gbajabiamila emerged winners the PDP had first said it would not sanction its senators and members of the House of Representatives for not heeding the directive of the party on the candidates to vote for during the election.

The party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, said, “There is nothing new in what happened and it is not unexpected… There is no reason to sanction anyone and come to think of it, it was an open secret balloting which does not leave room for identifying who voted for or against the party’s directive.”

Hours to the NASS leadership elections, the PDP had adopted Senator Ali Ndume and Hon. Umar Bago as its choices for Senate President and Speaker respectively. It thereafter directed its members in the upper and lower chambers to vote accordingly. However, many Senators and Reps elected on the platform of the party defied the directives and voted for other candidates.

In the contest, Senator Lawan garnered 79 votes to beat PDP backed Ndume, who scored 28 votes. Also, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC defeated Senator Ike Ekweramadu of the PDP in the election of the Deputy Senate President, scoring 68 votes to his opponent’s 37 votes. Gbajabiamila floored PDP’s choice, Bago. The results confirmed that many PDP lawmakers gave their votes to the APC backed candidates contrary to PDP’s directives.

“This is easy to establish because both Ndume and Ekweremadu did not secure the entire 44 votes of the PDP senators. Bago’s total vote scored also fell extremely short of the numbers of members we have in the House of Representatives,” a party source told our correspondent while justifying the decision of the party to investigate the voting pattern of its members, and possibly punish erring members at the end of the investigations.

He expressed displeasure at what it called the embarrassed by the roles played by some PDP members in the National Assembly during the election. “Their personal interest clashed with party interest, and they failed to do what is expected of them by allowing personal interests to drown that of the party. The party is indeed embarrassed and our leaders have decided to ensure that henceforth, party discipline is taken seriously,” he added.

Sources told The Nation that many chieftains of the party are opposed to moves  to probe the matter.

According to very reliable party sources, Secondus’ decision to announce a committee that will probe the voting pattern of the lawmakers is at best a “personal opinion backed by a few aggrieved party leaders who suffered personal losses due to the outcome of the elections.”

A party leader from the southeastern part of the country confided in our correspondent that some PDP governors have expressed their dissatisfaction with the announcement ,and urged the party leadership to put the development behind it and concentrate on providing quality opposition to the ruling APC.

It was also learnt that many PDP Senators and Reps members have vowed not to appear before the committee if ever constituted.

“Take for example, the governor of my state who openly endorsed Gbajabiamila when the later visited him; will he allow federal lawmakers from his state to be ridiculed by the committee? A ranking Senator from a South-South state went round with Senator Lawan during the campaign for Senate Presidency, what will the party do about that? The senator has even vowed not to appear before the committee.

“Aside governors and Senators, many party chieftains were taken by surprise to hear the announcement by Secondus.

“He didn’t consult widely before saying what he said. Don’t also forget that when he was asked a few days after the election of Lawan and Gbajabiamila if the PDP would punish its members who voted for the duo, he said the party would  not do anything of such. That is exactly his personal opinion.

“We have it on good authority that the new decision to probe and punish is the idea of one of our governors in the South-south who felt personally insulted by the outcome of the elections. This governor, had also without consulting others, influenced the last minute directive given by Secondus to our legislators to vote Ndume and Bago. They think they own PDP. More shocks await them.”

The Nation gathered that some PDP governors, senators and other chieftains have formally protested to the National Chairman, expressing their objection to the decision to probe the outcome of the NASS leadership election. It was gathered that many of them warned the national leadership of the party to avoid any action capable of throwing  the party into a fresh crisis while urging it to rescind its decision to investigate ‘a dead issue that is of no significance to the growth of the party.’

  • Omo-Agege seeks re-organisation of Southsouth APC

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has called for the re-organisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-south.

According to him, the re-organisation will make the party work towards clinching some positions in 2023. He added that it would change the notion that the region is a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The senator spoke when the South-south APC members, led by the National Vice Chairman, Ntufam Eta, visited his Abuja residence to congratulate him on his election as deputy Senate president.

Omo-Agege attributed his victory to the support and endorsement by the president, party at the national and zonal level.

He said: “The party in the South-south needs to be reorganised. You provided leadership for us, we want you to continue to provide that leadership, but the difference now will be the support you are lacking, the support the party did not have then. With this platform given to us, as a party man, we will provide the support for you to have a vibrant party because some of us feel bad when we hear that South-south is a PDP zone.

“Some of us were in PDP, and we know what we need to do to wipe all those things away from the political space, but people need to understand that if you provide an enabling environment for our people, they will succeed; but if we just render ab-initio that that area is a PDP stronghold and leave
