Demand good governance, PDP South Africa tells Nigerians

The Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South African chapter, Hon Ekos Akpokabayen have called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to resist every intimidation aimed at silencing their democratic voice by the present APC led government and demand their rights with regards to administrative responsibility.

Akpokabayen made this known in a statement issued to The Nation, said that Nigerians should not be cowed to continue believing that the high-level incompetence, corruption and the military democracy they are witnessing today under Buhari and the APC almost 3 years down the line is still about the said errors of the PDP as they were made to believe from the beginning.

He noted that the recent corruption and counter corruption revelations under the present Buhari and APC-led government should serve as an eye opener for Nigerians all over the world. A lot has been covered and most of them swept under the carpet because the Nigerian masses are intimidated not to ask questions, we are slowly and tactically returning back to the era of military regimes which we all collectively vomited out over a decade ago.

Akpokabayen, who have consistently lend his voice against ill governance in Nigeria said “It is time for every Nigerian who can see clearly to rise and ask questions and demand for accountability, we must refer President Buhari and his APC back to the 81 point bogus campaign promises which one very prominent among them is that “all public office holders under the APC led government must be barred from seeking Medicare overseas” which he the president himself has violated over and over again”, he said.

Akpokabayen noted that the discovery a few days ago by the wife of the president, Hajia Aisha Buhari on the total emptiness of the state house clinic in Aso Rock, is very revealing, “I had to go back to those campaign promises because if Buhari and the APC made such promissory vow to Nigerians as part of their joker to deceive them into getting them to power, then it is the time to ask them to give account.”

He added that the same president who made bold with the above promissory vow allotted billions of taxpayers’ money from the 2016 and 2017 and even beginning from 2015 national budgets respectively for the running of the same clinic which is solely meant for him but which he never visited even in his times of medical needs, instead he left the country for the United Kingdom in breach of his avowed campaign promises where another bunch of hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ money were wasted on different medical visits/vacations which ran into several months.

He asked how many of our hospitals are being maintained and functional today? If only the same state house clinic under review received over N11 billion yearly budgetary allocations and yet the sole beneficiary never visited it for once then it is time for Nigerians to redefine “corruption”,

Akpokabayen said: “it should baffle Nigerians that given all the billions that have gone down the drains so far, it was only few days ago that the wife of the president could discover the monumental rot under her husband’s administrative nose yet he has been chasing shadows outside in the name of trying to kill corruption, non-accountability to me is the worst kind of corruption, followed by nepotism which is the order of the day here as it is now”.

He further stated that Nigerians under the new administration were deceived into accepting the unnecessary increment of the prices of petroleum products especially the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with yet another bogus promise of using the proceeds to develop infrastructures and better the lives of the masses, almost 2 years have gone, nothing, not one thing to show for it, and Nigerians have once more learnt and resolved to live with it without no questions.

On the issue of the most recent $25 billion frivolous contracts scandal at the NNPC as exposed by a first line insider, the minister of state for petroleum Dr. Ibe Kachikwu which has been greeted with conflicting narratives as to what and how it happened, said that it is another memorable act of corruption that should not go away so quickly from our hearts unquestioned.

This, he stated that calls for serious concern by Nigerians, such revelation coming from an NNPC front-liner and the very minister of state for petroleum is over-weighty for us to allow it to be settled and come out to display some fraudulent coloration of facial smiles and handshakes on national television stations, it will be an error of the century for Nigeria and Nigerians”, it amounts to yet setting the worst precedence for our great nation,” he said.

He called on members of the PDP across the world to reposition themselves for the grand take overcome 2019.

“We must do all it takes and use every instrument of truth to enlighten Nigerians on the foundational defects, lies, propaganda, calumny, misrule, dictatorial military democracy, high level and very tactical corruptions, disrespect to the rules of law, Human Rights abuses all over the nation”, he said.

He continued: “I plead with my party, the PDP that there can never be any other time than this for us to come together, get all the fact on the table and begin to show Nigerians the very clear difference between a true democracy and a faulty one which is militarized.

2019: PDP set to dislodge ruling party – Senate caucus

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senate Caucus on Wednesday, met with the party’s, minority leaders of State Assemblies, assuring that the party was stronger and set to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), from power in 2019.

Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Godswill Akpabio made this known while briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, which held behind a closed door at the National Assembly Complex.

He said that a teeming number of stalwarts of other political parties “were on their way to the main opposition party in droves.

“These are the Minority Leaders of the PDP in different State Houses of Assembly, who are in Abuja to interact with the Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, and the Minority leader of the Senate.

“We congratulated ourselves that we stood firm and at the end. God gave us victory at the Supreme Court and the party is now waxing stronger.

“We have reviewed the state of the party and re-evaluated the situation, state by state, and we found out that the party is stronger than it was.

“And as I speak, stalwarts and thousands of members of other political parties, starting from APC, all the way down to APGA, are on their way to the PDP.

“We also want to urge the leadership of the party at the national level to open the door wide open between now and the next convention to receive them.”

Akpabio said the caucus also discussed the guideline for the forthcoming national convention of the PDP in order to make meaningful contributions to the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Speaking on behalf of the PDP Forum of the State Assemblies, Minority Leader of the Imo House of Assembly, Hon. Ken Agbim, assured of total support and mobilisation at the grassroots to give the party victory in 2019.

  • Jonathan advises PDP not to elect wrong chairman

Jonathan advises PDP not to elect wrong chairman

Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has advised Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members not to make the mistake of making wrong choice of National Working Committee (NWC) members at the December convention.

Jonathan gave the advice when he received an aspirant for the party’s national chairmanship position, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, in his residence in Abuja on Tuesday.

He cautioned that the party could not afford to make mistake in choosing its next national chairman and publicity secretary, describing them as “very delicate positions’’.

“This time around we need a very courageous and vocal person to be the chairman.

“There are two positions that we must not make mistake on – the positions of the national chairman and that of the national publicity secretary, because I have worn the shoes before and I know where it pinches.

“If we make a mistake as a party and elect wrong chairman and publicity secretary, we are finished,” Jonathan said.

He said that PDP at this moment, needed courageous chairman, who in the face of persecution, would remain courageous to protect the party’s interest and defend democracy.

“We need very competent person and a team player, somebody who will not negotiate to get money from the aspirants to make them candidates.

“If you do that, you have destroyed the party because a party must come up with programmes and policies that will elect the best of the best.

“If you present the best material, the chances of your wining election are stronger than when you present a wrong material.

“We need such kind of chairman that will galvanise the national committee and also link up with state committees and do the best for the party.

“This is key so that by 2019 when we go for the general elections, PDP will have majority in the states and national assemblies and of course, PDP must win the presidency,” he said.

Jonathan, who said that the December convention would be keenly contested, urged chairmanship aspirants to see the exercise as a family affair.

“Whatever comes out, as faithful loyalists of the party, you should accept it. So, whoever is going to contest should have that in mind.

“Recently, I read that you met with one of the aspirants; that is a good spirit; no victor no vanquished. The winner must be PDP and not an individual.”

He also corroborated the view of the former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar (retd), on the need for the PDP to fully assume its role of opposition.

According to the former president, PDP must migrate from the ruling party to opposition for the purpose of stabilising the country’s democracy.

“I am not saying that as an opposition party you must been saying anything you like, no. PDP is a very mature party.

“We will not go to the quarter and criticise anyhow but all over the world, the opposition party checkmates the ruling party so that things are done properly, so that there will not be impunity.

“If the opposition party goes to sleep, the ruling party can do anything it likes,” he said

He, however, commended the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the party, saying that they had done very well, especially during the period of crisis in the party.

Jonathan prayed for Dokpesi in his aspiration to become PDP chairman and described him as “a member who has done well for the party’’.

He said that Dokpesi had used his resources to support the party, and “has shown so much commitment to the affairs of the party.”

Earlier, Dokpesi had urged Jonathan to ensure that the PDP came out of the December convention stronger and united.

He commended for former president’s resilience and efforts in ensuring that the party’s leadership crisis was resolved.

“I am very positive that this party must come out of December elective national convention stronger and united to be able to give the needed opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As our leader, you have to look for means to ensure that we come out of the forthcoming convention stronger and united,” he said.

  • I’m done with PDP, can’t help you or party – Obasanjo tells Makarfi

I’m done with PDP, can’t help you or party – Obasanjo tells Makarfi

The National Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, on Tuesday held a private meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo ostensibly to seek Obasanjo’s help in rebuilding and rejuvenating crisis – ridden PDP.

But indications emerged later that the outcome of the hour – long meeting at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, did not fit into Makarfi’s initial expectations.

Rather than get help,  it was learnt, that Obasanjo reminded the former Governor of Kaduna State in clear term that he was long done with PDP and would not want to reverse himself on a decision long taken about the party.

Obasanjo who was elected President of Nigeria twice on the ticket of PDP and later became the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, had in the build up to the 2015 general elections, publicly tore his PDP membership card before Television Camera and announced his quitting of partisan politics to become an elder statesman and father of all of Nigerians.

And at the conclusion of the private discussion, this afternoon, the ex – President who barred Makarfi from speaking to journalists, saying he would speak on his behalf, said it was a meeting of two former colleagues, and did tell his guest that he was “no longer of the PDP” having “quitted partisan politics.”

“This is two colleagues meeting, two colleagues before before, when I was the President, Chairman was a Governor, two colleagues before before.

“I have told the Chairman that I was in PDP before but not now, ‘God forbid, say when a dog vomits, it will go back to eat its vomit, no. I have said no partisan politics for me again and not partisan politics, but Nigeria is my passion until death do us part and anything that concerns Nigeria; the good of Nigeria, you will see my involvement.

“So, the Chairman has come to greet me and ‘I greet am’, and now that we’ve greeted ourselves, Chairman will be going, you gentlemen and ladies of the press, you can now go, leave the Chairman alone.

“I have said that publicly before and I will say it again, for our democracy to thrive and continue to be strong, we need strong party in government and strong party in the opposition.

“It has to be that way, otherwise party in government will get away with impunity and that is not good for democracy,” Obasanjo said.

  • PDP knocks Buhari over fresh $5.5bn loan request

PDP knocks Buhari over fresh $5.5bn loan request

    • Hollers at FG’s N7.5trl debt portfolio

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised its voice against President Muhammadu Buhari’s fresh external loan request of $5.5bn pending before the National Assembly for approval.

In a statement on Wednesday, by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adyeye, the opposition party accused the President of mortgaging the future of the unborn generation of Nigerians through “needless and mindless” borrowing.

The Debt Management Office (DMO), in a recent public statement, had put the Federal Government’s total borrowing with the past two years at N7.51 trillion.

Describing the government’s penchant or borrowing as mind-boggling, the PDP warned that the fresh $5.5 billion loan request was capable of pushing the nation down the black hole of debt that could adversely affect the future of the country.

The statement said, “As a party that governed this nation meritoriously for 16 years and handed over a buoyant economy to the APC in 2015, we are concerned that by the time Nigerians would have the opportunity to push out the APC government in 2019, the economy of the nation would have been damaged irreparably.

“We are dismayed at the rate at which the APC government is plunging the nation into debt through local and foreign borrowing without concomitant developmental projects in any sphere of the nation’s economy to justify the huge borrowing.

“The figure released recently by the. Debt Management Office (DMO) stating that the nation under the administration of the APC government in the last two years of being in office, has borrowed N7.51 trillion, is mind-boggling.

“Mind-boggling because all round infrastructural decay has now reached alarming proportions. The roads have deteriorated, the state of the power supply has become worse, there has been no increase in wages to match skyrocketing inflation.

“As a result, workers in educational institutions and other government agencies have spent more time at home observing strike actions than they spend at work, insecurity has sky-rocketed beyond what anyone can imagine, while those in power continue to delude themselves that they are providing plausible leadership for the country.”

The party challenged President Buhari to explain to Nigerians what his government has done with the huge sums borrowed in the last two years in the name of financing infrastructural development in the country.

According to the PDP, the nation’s debt has risen by 61.96 percent since Buhari assumed the leadership of the country over two years ago.

The opposition party called on the National Assembly not to grant the $5.5 billion loan request, saying there was no tangible result to show for huge loans obtained in the last two years.

“As major stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we are worried that if the National Assembly does not stop this latest demand for foreign loan, the money when released, will go the way of other loans obtained in the last two years without any tangible result to show for it,” the statement added.

  • RTEAN President, others defect to APC in Edo

RTEAN President, others defect to APC in Edo

Defection gale has hit the People’s Democratic Party in Edo State as many of the party faithfuls last weekend joined the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

In Esan North East local government, National President of the Road Transport Employers Association (RTEAN) and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Alhaji Musa Isiwele led hundreds of his supporters to join the APC at Uromi.

Uromi is the home town of the former PDP’s BoT chairman, Chief Tony Anenih and former minister of works under PDP administration, Chief Mike Onolememen.

In Esan West local government area, PDP Ward 3 unit chairman, Mr Julius Ebhoman, led other PDP members in the ward to join the APC.

At Otuo in Owan East local government, Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon Pally Iriase received hundreds of PDP defectors led by a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Roland Omatoje.

Hon Iriase said the defection would further replete the PDP in the locality and boost the APC chances in future elections in the state.

He said the PDP was overwhelmed by the infrastructural development being attracted to the locality and across the state.

The RTEAN President who is regarded as strong force for the PDP in Uromi urged his followers to have faith in the APC.

Alhaji Isiwele stated that the PDP as a political organisation has failed and lacked viable political future in Edo State.

He said the decision to dump the PDP was informed by the desire to contribute his quota in the new agenda of the ruling government which in his words would take Edo central to the “Promised Land”.

Isiwele added that Edo central people need to bring their astuteness into the APC and ensure that their interests are promoted and protected.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were the State APC Chairman, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, All the Edo Central L.G.A. Chairmen, Chief (Dr) Francis Inegbeniki, the Uzoya of Esanland, Arc.(Dr) Austin Ilenre Emuan, the APC leader of Esan north east L.G. A., Chief Okoror and host of others.

State Secretary of the APC, Lawrence Okah, said more PDP chieftains have indicated interest to join the APC.

Okah said the PDP would be nothing in the state especially in Edo Central after the defection.

Reacting, State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Chris Nehikhare said the party was not bothered about the defection.

Chris stated that the party’s leadership concern is how to restructure the party and make it attractive to Edo people.

He said, “Those defecting are doing because of economic situation and we sympathise with them. We are interested in the electorate and not in a few people.

“Their leaving will not affect our chances in future elections in the state. We will affect us is if we do not carry out our restructuring plan”.

  • Politicians say Nigeria has not fared badly

Politicians say Nigeria has not fared badly

Some Politicians in Lagos on Sunday said that Nigeria would keep learning from its mistakes until she attains near perfection.

The politicians told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in interviews that the nation had, however, not fared badly, in spite of its ups and downs.

They noted that Nigeria was once a military-governed nation, but today, she is enjoying a democracy which allows for the enjoyment of fundamental human rights.

Mr Dennis Aghanya, the Executive Secretary of the Anti-Corruption Research Data Based Initiative (ARDI), told NAN that much had been achieved in the life of Nigeria as a nation.
According to him, however, there have been ups and downs.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has demonstrated a vision for the country, although, he may not have succeeded as expected but has demonstrated the willingness better than any other past leader, to get it right.
“His anti-corruption fight is a fundamental step among others that Nigeria needs at this point, if we must justify our existence. I am most grateful to him for raising that consciousness.
“The latest in his kit is reviving the Recovery of Public Property Act, 1983.
“For Nigeria to succeed, leaders must be nationalistic in their thinking and not calling for regional allegiances, as emphasis is largely becoming all about “my region and not Nigeria; that may be our worst undoing,’’ Aghanya said.
The National Chairman of the National Unity Party, Chief Perry Opara, said Nigeria had fared well, but needed to do more.
“Like in the area of economy, we hear that Nigeria has come out of recession, but I think government should increase the tempo to ensure that better economic policies are given to Nigerians, so that the private sector and even the international community can appreciate what is going on and be able to key into it,’’ Opara said.

The National Chairman of the Progressives Action Council, Chief Charles Nwodo, said there was need for Nigeria to reflect on the achievements of its past leaders.
“We have to reflect on the achievement of our founding fathers, so that it will be the step of correcting our anomalies in the management of state affairs.
“Nigeria has not demonstrated the capacity as a nation to deliver, our founding fathers of our politics and democracy were wiser, they were able to manage our economy efficiently, without oil.

“They were able to manage the diversity of our regions and also on top of it, also created a united, strong Nigeria.
“It is unfortunate that after their era, the music started sounding different, corruption became the order of the day and the high quality of education we noticed then started weighing down, infrastructure dilapidated.
“I believe that we should also adopt the process of restructuring Nigeria in order to have a fast-track of these laudable achievements,’’ Nwodo said.
However, a former Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Capt. Olatunji Shelle, did not agree that Nigeria has achieved a lot at 57.
According to him, there are agitations everywhere.
“The present administration has to put its house in order; the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary need to start working in harmony; there is more division in the country now than ever before,’’ he noted.

APC best option for Igbo presidency – Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said on Thursday that the party remain the best option for actualizing a south-east Presidency in the nearest future.

Oyegun spoke while inaugurating a fifteen-member campaign committee for the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra state challenged the committee to work to bring the South East into the mainstream of Nigerian politics and into the progressive family.

He also challenged the committee led by Bauchi state governor, Mohammed Abubakar to mobilize the entire citizens of Anambra state for victory as the state was very important to the APC, pointing out that a victory for the party in Anambra will help address the cries of marginalization from the south-east ego political zone.

He said: “we must change the narrative in the south-east and we must start with Anambra because the APC represents the most viable root for any south-east person to the presidency of this country.”

Oyegun said that the party recognized the fact that the election will not be a bed of roses in view of the fact that there is an incumbent governor in the state, adding that “if the APC can defeat an incumbent President, we can also defeat an incumbent governor, we have done it before in Kogi and Ondo state.”

Oyegun welcomed former Deputy National Chairman to the Modu Sherrif led-faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the party, saying his presence in the committee showed that he has a lot to contribute to the development of the party.

Chairman of the committee and Bauchi state governor, Barrister Mohammed Abubakar said even though the task given to them was daunting, the members recognized the fact that it was necessary to win the Anambra governorship election and bring the zone into mainstream national politics.

He said there was the need for the party and its members to work for the success of the party in the election, pointing out that it was necessary to avoid a repeat of the defeat the party suffered during the Senatorial election in Osun state.

He said the party should capitalize on the age of the candidate to campaign for a generational shift, adding that his victory will give the youths a say and assured that the campaign committee will work to bring the state into the fold of the APC.

The leader of the party in the state and Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige assured that all the people of the state will work with the committee to ensure victory for the party in the election.

Gov. Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi, Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Nasir ElRufai (Kaduna), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Godwin Obaseki (Edo) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Ministers of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

  • Why Adeniran is the right man to lead PDP — DG

Why Adeniran is the right man to lead PDP — DG

The Director-General of Prof. Tunde Adeniran Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, has said that the declaration of the former minister for the national chairmanship position of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), opens another chapter for the party to regain its prominent place in the democratic affairs of the country.
Gabam, former chief of staff in Bauchi state, who affirmed that Prof. Adeniran’s candidature is based on his proven and unblemished track records, in an interview said: “Our campaign is simply based on character, consistency from someone who wants to vie for the chairmanship position. We are supporting Prof. Adeniran because right from 1998, he has never wavered; he remains consistent with the party.
“Secondly, we have checked his track records in various spheres of life- he has served as an ambassador, a minister, he was at the United Nations, he is a professor of repute and in all these, there is nothing incriminatory about him. He maintained a very disciplined and humble background, very dedicated and committed personality.”
He added that these attributes and more are what have made major players in the party to back the former ambassador to Germany, adding that the PDP can’t afford to elect someone of questionable character to lead the party.
His words: “It is a major paradigm shift. We don’t want to bring in a chairman that will be coerced, picked up tomorrow by security agencies under the whatsoever guise of intimidation or investigation to bring down the morale of the party. We want someone with a clean record, someone with the outstanding international record- someone that can speak freely on the world stage and will be respected. These are the reasons why we stood by him among other aspirants that have shown interests from the South-West and Southern Nigeria in general.”
Gabam disclosed that Prof. Adeniran is poised to clinch the chairmanship position at the National Convention of the PDP billed for December 9.
“His chances of winning at the convention are absolutely bright. The shakers and movers of the PDP were at his declaration and the attributes that were read about him were outstanding. He has an advantage over others. We are going for quality, decency, service, responsibility and sense of direction and someone who understands clearly the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the party,” he said.
Recall that on Wednesday, at the Yar’adua Centre, Abuja, while declaring public his intention to contest the office of national chairman in the party’s forthcoming convention, Prof. Adeniran said a transparent and credible convention would guarantee the survival of the party for years to come.
He pledged to re-affirm and entrench the founding principles of the party and rejuvenate it to its original state of strength, devoid of impunity, imposition and subversion of the will of the people among others.
Adeniran said it would be “uncharitable and a despicable fallacy” for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to rubbish the achievements of the PDP administration in 16 years, especially when one considered the massive challenges the PDP inherited from long years of military rule.

I am next Nigerian President – Fayose

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2019 presidential election.

The Governor made this known on Tuesday in a letter addressed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to inform it of his intention.

Recall that Fayose, in July, unofficially displayed his presidential campaign on social media, after boasting that he would wrestle power from President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the declaration, he had said: “I have a penchant for taking powers; that one in Buhari’s hand, I will take it. I’m going straight to that villa. I’m the next president.”

The letter reads: “It is with deep sense of responsibility that I write to inform you of my intentions to seek the ticket/mandate of our party to contest the 2019 presidential election, considering your support and commitment towards our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) it becomes imperative to keep you informed and seek your support.

“This ambition, however, is without prejudice to our party position, but in the overall interest of the party and our country.

“I urge that all hands should be on deck to ensure victory in our quest to return to the presidential villa, Abuja in 2019.

“Accept the assurance of my highest regards as a determined presidential hopeful.”
