  • Ogun: Between politics and personality

SIR: Two of the major factors that will return the current Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to power on February 28, are his exemplary performance in office and politics of accommodation.

When former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently endorsed Amosun for second term, he gave his reasons, which, in my reckoning, are the same as those given by former United States’ Secretary of State, Colin Powell, while endorsing President Barack Obama for second term. Just as Obasanjo belongs to a rival party so is Colin Powell.

The fact is, there comes a time when even politicians must rise above politics and place public interest above political interest.

There has been a huge deficit in governance in Ogun before 2011, indeed in Nigeria. Citizens had lost hope in the ability of politicians to restore the glory of the state. They seemed to try their luck in 2011 by casting their votes for the opposition candidate, Amosun. Then within three and a half years, the ray of hope has suddenly become full illumination.

What again does common sense teach us? Does it make sense to leave certainty for uncertainty, judging from where we are coming from? Now that Amosun is in power, all opposition candidates move freely and air their views on the state television station. That was practically impossible in those days.

So we must all appreciate Obasanjo for doing what is expected of any rational person at this juncture of the history of Ogun.

Declared the ex-president, “So, my people, I am not talking about other elections. I have come to tell you that in order to appreciate what this personality (Amosun) has been able to do in the last three and a half years, let us give him our votes.”

Obasanjo  went further, “In 2011, we were not together. We were together before and I did campaign against him. See what he has been able to do in the last three and a half years in the state. I cannot sacrifice performance for party.

“What happened in 2011 was politics, and we can all see the difference between politics and personality.”

Therefore, I restate the call made recently that what Ogun needs at this juncture is continuity. Let us ignore the  selfish and opportunistic declamations of the “tried and failed” politicians. Let us reward diligence, integrity, public spiritedness and sterling achievements. Let’s give thumbs up for the personality of Amosun.

  • Sobanjo is Africa’s Most Influential Personality in Advert

Advertising czar, Mr. Biodun Sobanjo, has been presented with the Most Influential Personality in Advertising in Africa Award.

The event held at the Third African Development (ADM) Award of Excellence in Development (Ghana 2014) at Novotel Hotel, Accra, Ghana.

According to Ayo Ilesanmi, Chief Executive Officer, Playhorse Communications Limited, publishers of the ADM Magazine, the awards’ organisers highlighted that Sobanjo was counted worthy of the award ‘in appreciation of his contributions to the advertising industry in Africa.’

According to Ilesanmi, it has become necessary for African leaders to refocus on the continent so as not to reinforce the stronghold of neocolonialists that emphasise on minor divisive tendencies to milk Africa. “There is no better time for business leaders of African origin to position to harness the economic strengths of domestic economies of the nation states of Africa. No one else is going to develop Africa but Africans,’’ he said.

He explained that acknowledging giant strides of illustrious sons and daughters of Africa was ADM’s small way of thanking those who have demonstrated faith in developing Africa by investing their God-given resources in the hope that it gingers both present and coming generations to walk in the steps of worthy leaders.

“We hope to grow the awards to motivate Africans so that people can aspire to earning it through diligence and honesty in the coming years. That way, worthy leaders become role models and inspiration for African development,”said Ilesanmi.

The award was chaired by Ing Robert Wood, chairman of Fateco Limited, Ghana.

The next edition of the awards is billed for Nairobi, Kenya.

  • ‘Ekiti ‘ll vote for personality in 2015’

‘Ekiti ‘ll vote for personality in 2015’

All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant in Ekiti South District Ayodele Adu spoke with  EMMANUEL OLADESU and SINA FADARE on his agenda and other partisan issues.

You have a flourishing career in the banking world. What attracted you to politics?

According to a German philosopher, a political illiterate is the worst of illiterates. The inaction of those who do not participate in politics is what causes the social injustices we are all talking about in the society. They don’t know that  not participating in politics make the price of rice in the market to go beyond the reach of the common man.

If you are not participating in politics, you are killing the economy and not helping the coming generation. As a man, no matter how comfortable you are, you must find a way of contributing your quota to the development of others and see how you can impact into the lives of the people. The zeal to do that has encouraged me to go into politics.

In my constituency, l see a lot of poverty. Even, at times, it is difficult for people to raise their children’s school fees when l was growing up. So, I made up my mind that, if l have the opportunity, l will assist all those  that are in need. At my private level, l have been trying to give succour to the needy and meet a lot of people’s demand in my little way. If l have the opportunity to serve the people therefore, l will be able to take care of their needs at a global level. For example, l have given scholarship to some people, donated to community projects and assisted in one way or the order, but there is little one can do at an individual level.  That is why l want to be in politics so that l can render more services to my people. If you are in government, you can see to policy formulation and execution, especially policies that have direct positive impact on millions of people. The Senate, which l am aspiring to go, is a place where you discuss the fortune of the country.

I want to go to the Senate to utilise my wealth of experience in the financial and stock exchange, which I have garnered in the last 16 years, so that the country at large will tap from this opportunity. In the US, erudite lawyers and professionals  are in the Senate to rob minds together and come up with a law that will assist the country in its developments.

Technocrats are always afraid to swim in the murky waters of politics. What is the motivation?

There is always a challenge in any area of human endeavour. Politics is not exempted. I have the determination to serve my people in any capacity. That is why l want to go to the Senate. I like challenges and, like l have always overcome them in the past, l will do that of politics and I will have a remarkable achievement at the end.

Yes, Nigerian politics is murky, but it all depends on the approach and the tenacity of purpose that you put into it. In Ekiti, l have met with the chairmen of the 64 wards. They are more political and intelligent than l expected. I was able to lay my cards on the table and share my vision and dream of giving it all to the total emancipation of my people from poverty and penury that  are ravaging them now. That is why l sold my profile to them. They are very excited about it and majority of them are praying that l will be their senator   next year.

If you go to the state now and you talk to anybody on the street, they will tell you that that is our next senator because l was able to sell myself to the people and they are very passionate about my credential and humble background. Although the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) will be the party in power next year, that does not change anything because  l parade one of the best credential and the people of the state will want me to represent them in the Senate  without a recourse to any party. Take, for instance, if they want to talk on the issue of finance in the Senate, if l am fortunate to be there, definitely, l will play a major role because of my background.

How do you think you can make a difference from the previous people who  had represented Ekiti in the Senate?

My main focus will be the irreversible investment. Ekiti people are agrarian in nature. There is poor economic development. You cannot create market, unless you create institutional changes there. I will try to use my contact, both locally and internationally, to benefit my community and my country at large.

In the past, the state was unlucky to have some people who are mere on lookers in the Senate and all their constituency allowances were spent on their family. They bought few okada and keke NAPEP. That  is not how to empower the people.  l can assure the people of Ekiti that a new dawn has come and an expert is about to go to the Senate to change their economic fortune.

What is your chance, in view of the politics of stomach infrastructure, which is in vogue now?

I still believe that the people of Ekiti did not practice the politics of stomach infrastructure. We have a politically conscious society and the people respect you for what you are and what you can offer, in terms of developmental programmes. They also did not like a situation where you take them for granted. They want you to accord them with little honour. They want to see that you are humble and that you can actually relate with them at any level and that you are accessible to them, especially at the point of their need. For example, l distributed about 30,000 exercise books when I declared my intention officially to my people. I had to give them to students going to school free of charge as my own little contribution to their educational success. This will encourage parents to save millions of naira that could have been expended on these books.

By so doing,  in my little way, we are re- creating wealth. I donated the exercise books, not for any  reason,  apart for the fact that the students need them at this particular period that they are resuming and it will equally assist their parents.  If that is the only way l can assist my people, l will do it in a million times, if l have the resources. I am always happy and  fulfilled when l put smile on the faces of others.

What is the assurance that the APC will pick you as its candidate?

Credibility and high profile that l parade will be an advantage for me. My profile is all over the state and particularly, my senatorial district and it is verifiable. People know my background and the family. This election will not be on party basis. It will be based on personality. It is about the person who is qualified to be there and who will make an ppreciable impact. I have all what it takes to make a difference.

ONCE upon a time man-about-town, Laolu Saraki, seems to have perfected the art of appearing and disappearing from the scene at the drop of the hat. Ever since he got married to his Spanish girlfriend, Laolu has spent more time abroad, and simply dashing in and out of the country to attend to urgent personal issues. Last weekend, the handsome young man made a surprise appearance at the surprise birthday thrown by On Air Personality, Toke Makinwa, for his fiancé, Maje Ayinda to the delight of his silver spoon friends who also graced the party. • Business success and potency of personality

Business success and potency of personality

Personality is one thing that is very critical to success. Personality refers one’s character or behaviour. Research confirms that people who engage in a business that aligns with their true personality tend to achieve tremendous success and fulfilment. In short, every personality type has the potential to grow a successful business. What you just need is to determine the right opportunity. Self-awareness makes us easily bridge the gap between the type of person we are and the right business for us.

    Risk-taking

Peter Drucker, an international business-management expert says entrepreneurship is about taking risk and the behaviour of an entrepreneur reflects a kind of person willing to put his career and financial security on the line and take risks in the name of an idea, spending much time as well as capital on an uncertain venture. There is definitely an entrepreneurial personality. That is why some people can struggle through to entrepreneurial success, while others cannot. Entrepreneurial personality type explains why some entrepreneurs fail in one venture only to succeed in another venture which tallies with their character.

    Coincidence

For the simple fact that founding and running a successful company is a long-term process, an entrepreneur needs to be careful in the course of choosing a venture by choosing one which tallies with his or her natural personality. “Rather than swimming upstream with the currents running against your potential success, why not focus on the types of situations and businesses in which you can thrive?” says Bill Wagner, co-founder of Accord Management Systems, a California-based behavioural consultancy. The essence of identifying a business that matches your own personality is that you can leverage your strengths and improve your weaknesses.

    Entrepreneurial categories

As regards personality and entrepreneurship, different types of entrepreneurs have been identified by business management experts. These are personal achievers, super salespeople, real managers and expert idea generators, etc. Let us examine these different categories.

    Individual achievers

Personal achievers, according to Professor John Miner, a business management expert and author of “The 4 Routes to Entrepreneurial Success”, are classic entrepreneurs, bringing tremendous energy to their performance. They like to plan, including setting goals for future achievements. They have a lot of initiative and a strong commitment to their organisations. Personal achievers believe that they control their lives through their own actions rather than being controlled by circumstances and are most likely to succeed if they pursue the achieving route by constantly putting out fires and dealing with crises.

    Great salespeople

Super salespeople constitute another class. These people possess a great deal of feeling for other people and want to help in any way possible. They use a soft-sell approach, and receive sales from their customers’ desire to give something back. Relationships are very important to them. Therefore, they like social situations and groups. According to Miner, these people consider selling to be essential to their companies and to succeed as entrepreneurs, super salespeople need to use the selling route by spending as much time as possible selling and getting someone else to manage the business.

    Effective managers

Real managers are another group of entrepreneurs. They like to take charge, and they do well in corporate leadership positions. They are competitive, decisive and positively disposed to those with authority. They enjoy power and acting a part. Miner educates that as entrepreneurs, they frequently become effective marketers, partly by managing the marketing process but often by being good salespeople. The ideal path to success for real managers is the managing route, which is by finding or starting a business large enough to need their managerial talents.

    Idea masters

The expert idea generators invent new products, find new niches, develop new processes, and generally find a way to out-think the competition. These are innovators in the true entrepreneurial sense, and are strongly drawn to the world of ideas. Miner says yet, these people can get carried away by their enthusiasm and fail to take sufficiently-calculated risks; and to mitigate the risks of unwarranted enthusiasm, a degree of cautiousness helps here.

    Additional classification

Another research work classifies entrepreneurs into two. That is, generalists and specialists. Generalists are strategic thinkers. They are big-picture-oriented, prefer environments where they can use their results-driven nature, enjoy autonomy and independence, and are stronger risk-takers. This is the source of their need to win and their belief that they are always right. They are therefore self-confident.

However, specialists are tactically oriented, prefer operating within their areas of expertise, are more detail-oriented, and prefer environments that provide both security and stability. Specialists are typically more risk-averse, unless they are working within their areas of expertise. Therefore, doing things by the book by following rules, policies and procedures is more important to the specialists.

    Parting shot

The most important factor that distinguishes entrepreneurs who barely make it from those who are super-rich is personality and the ability to harness it, use it and learn from it. Successful entrepreneurs know that the greatest knowledge is self-knowledge. Therefore, pursue business engagements that match your personality today because your personality is critical to business or career success.

    Till we meet on Wednesday.
