    ‘Eagles were not disgraced’

Peter Osaze Odemwingie says Nigeria can return home with their heads held high after their World Cup dream ended against France.

The Stoke City forward was key to the Super Eagles’ fortunes in Brasilia last Monday, playing a major role in their best attacks.

But a 79th minute goal from Paul Pogba, the brother of Crewe star Mathias, all but ended their campaign and a Joseph Yobo own goal made it 2-0 in injury time.

Odemwingie said: “We go out in the second round but a lot of great teams were already at home watching the competition on TV.

“I think we can be proud of how we’ve done and for a long time we thought we could win.

“This is football, things can change quickly and at any moment. Unfortunately there was a little mistake when Vincent (Enyeama)… (pushed a cross to Pogba).

“But Vincent played a great game. But for him we might have been two or three down already. We knew he could save us and he did many times.”

KESHI TO OSAZE- Your goals not enough

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has said he has yet to decide on whether to recall Peter Osaze Odemwingie, who has been on fine form with Stoke City.

Osaze has scored three goals in the English Premier League with Stoke since he moved in the winter from Cardiff City. But the striker has not played for Nigeria since 2012 after a public spat with Keshi, which will lead to the player eventually being axed from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Keshi has insisted his team is not about a particular player, and would rather want to maintain team harmony.

“I am happy that Osaze is scoring for his club and he is now back to regular action, but that is not enough for me to call him up to the Eagles World Cup squad,” Keshi disclosed.

“What most Nigerians don’t understand is that, this team is not about a player, but about the team. No player is a boss in the team, but all players are equal. I don’t want to invite a player that would unsettle the team chemistry and unity.”

He added: “How come some Nigerians keep talking about two players only? Ikechukwu Uche and Osaze Odemwingie. Are they the only players doing well that have not been invited? How about Lukman Haruna, Michael Babatunde, why are people not talking about them?

“One thing we must know is that it’s only the best we will pick to the World Cup. But what we will not do is pick players who want to lord themselves on other players in the team.”

Nigeria must name a 30-man provisional squad for Brazil 2014 by May 13.

Cardiff boss predicts doom for Osaze, others

Peter Osaze Odemwingie’s manager Malky Mackay fears his Cardiff City side could be relegated unless harmony is restored to the club.

The Scot, who admitted fears of being sacked after Saturday’s defeat to Liverpool in a frank and honest press conference warned against being relegated unless the backroom row is resolved as soon as possible.

Mackay, who is preparing his Cardiff team for their Boxing Day match at to Southampton, was scheduled to meet with club owner Tan on Monday or Tuesday, but now it seems that won’t happen until after the home match against Southampton on Boxing Day.

“Absolutely. You can’t have your dirty linen washed in public every week of the year without it affecting the club. That won’t happen immediately because it’s my job to make sure I protect them (the players).

“They are a great group of people who want to make sure we stay in Premier League football, without a doubt

but I am not naive enough to think they don’t read newspapers or watch television and think ‘what on earth

    is going on?’.

“I’m proud to be the manager here and I think I should be the manager here. I will keep doing what I’m doing and if someone wants to do something different that’s up to them.

“It is disappointing that e-mail appeared to be leaked. There are enough people talking about it. I was disappointed about the content in that. That’s something we will be addressing.

“I love my job here.I love working and living in Cardiff.I’m proud of my team and have a determination to look after that” Mackay is quoted as saying on walesonline.co.uk.
