I’ll serve God and our people, says Peterside

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Mr. Dakuku Peterside, has said he will serve God and the people if elected next February.

He spoke at a praise/dedication service at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Peterside said: “I am openly admitting that we acknowledge that power belongs to God.

“We have chosen to begin from here because by divine unction and direction, we have come to understand that time tested truth that while ‘Some trust in chariots, and some in horses’: we are most assured when we’ remember the name of the Lord our God.”

He added: “When on October 26, 2007, our governor took over leadership in our beloved state, we all agreed that power belongs to God. And so, we set our heart that if that faithful God would graciously give us an opportunity to serve Rivers people in any capacity, we would do so with all our heart and soul and strength and that at each point, we would raise an altar of Praise and Thanksgiving to His Holy Name. We are therefore, here today, to stand true to that vow.

”When by the grace of God and the decision of our great party, the All Progressive Congress, the mantle to take the baton of leadership fell on me, I  Dakuku Adol Peterside, your son, who grew up among you, watched over by the elders, decided that I would humbly invite my fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, friends and everyone in our state, to come join me praise the King of kings and establish Him as always as Lord and God over Rivers State.

“Having worked closely with our leader, our brother, our governor and our friend , I have seen his passion for excellence and a new and better Rivers State. I have been challenged by this passion and believe that a greater Rivers State is possible if we all join hands.

“Together I believe we can provide leadership that will accelerate the actualisation of a greater Rivers dream of improved middle class, first class safe environment, equal and more socio-economic opportunities and create a greater sense of community, a Rivers State that will be the pride of Africa.

“On my honour, I pledge this day, before God and His priests assembled here, that when I am elected and sworn into office as Governor of Rivers State in 2015, I will serve God and our people. We will not sell our dear Rivers State to the devil. Not for anything!”

The cleric, who gave the exhortation, Apostle Israel Alubah, an Ogoni, stated that Wike and his governorship aspiration had failed, with the refusal of his hired chopper to take him back to Port Harcourt from Bori-Ogoni last Thursday, during his “thank you” tour.

Alubah noted that the PDP’s standard bearer flew in an helicopter into Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoniland, but to confirm God’s disapproval of his governorship aspiration, the chopper could not start after his campaign and he angrily returned to Port Harcourt by road, only for the helicopter to start shortly after Wike and his allies left.

In his sermon entitled: “Our God can do it again,” the cleric described Peterside, an indigene of Opobo, the headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area and the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Petroleum (Downstream),  as a destiny child.

Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi read the only lesson, taken from II Chronicles 7: 11-19.

The dedication was attended by Amaechi’s wife, Dame Judith; Peterside’s wife, Elima; his running mate, Okorie Honourable Asita, and his wife, Patricia; the representatives of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, Magnus Ngei Abe; and the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Others in attendance were a member of the Board of Trustees of the APC, Sam Sam Jaja; Rivers Deputy Governor; Tele ikuru, an engineer; the Rivers Chairman of the APC, Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya; the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, George Feyii, among other eminent personalities.

  • 2015 polls: Peterside picks another Rep as running mate

2015 polls: Peterside picks another Rep as running mate

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, has picked another member of the House of Representatives, Asita Honourable, as his running mate for the 2015 election.

Asita, from Engenni in Ahoada West Local Government Area in Orashi Rehion, represents Ahoada West-Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni constituency of Rivers state and he is the leader of the Rivers caucus in the National Assembly, is also of the upland part of the state.

Peterside, who hails from riverine Opobo, the headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro LGA of Rivers state, represents Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro constituency in the House of Representatives and chairs the House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream).

Picking of Asita was announced yesterday evening on a local radio station in Port Harcourt, after wide consultations, according to a top official of the APC, who would not want to be named.

The running mate (Asita) moved the motion for the endorsement of Peterside, during the recent primary election of the APC at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt, before the delegates from the 23 LGAs of the state massively. voted for the only governorship candidate of the party who picked the nomination and expression of intent forms.

Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who is the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), recently declared that no Ikwerre person would succeed him, while opting for somebody from another ethnic group or senatorial district, to ensure justice, equity and fairness.

Amaechi and the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nyesom Wike, who is the immediate past Minister of State for Education, are both Ikwerre. The Rivers governor is from Ubima in Ikwerre LGA, while Wike hails from Rumueprikom in Obio/Akpor LGA.

Upland/riverine dichotomy is very strong in Rivers state, thereby prompting Peterside, from the riverine part of the state to pick an upland person as his running mate.

It was learnt in Port Harcourt yesterday that Wike, an uplander, would pick his running mate from Kalabari (riverine) part of the state.

The Rivers APC’s governorship candidate is quietly moving round the state and meeting with the main stakeholders, ahead of the official launch of his campaigns, while his counterpart of the PDP was at Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoniland on Thursday, where he commenced his “thank you” tour

Peterside gets support from Southsouth students in abroad

Academic and students from the Southsouth in the United Kingdom (UK) have expressed confidence in the ability of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Dr Dakuku Peterside, to take the state to greater heights.

President of a Southsouth students’ union government in the UK, Mr Peter Ogbeni, has said beneficiaries of the scholarships of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) would support Peterside to become governor in next year’s election.

Ogbeni spoke in the UK at a graduation dinner organised for Southsouth students.

He said students from the region would back the APC candidate to ensure that that the scholarships would be continued form the benefit of future students from Rivers State and other parts of Southsouth.

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has been giving education a prime position since the inception of his administration.

Ogbeni noted that the administration’s education policy had enabled indigent students to enjoy quality education in Nigeria and overseas.

The union leader acknowledged that some of the recipients of Peterside’s scholarship were at the event and successfully completed their studies.

RSSDA’s National Coordinator, Trevor Omoruyi, who is a doctoral degree researcher and lecturer in one of the business schools in England, urged other Southsouth governors and stakeholders to emulate the Amaechi administration in education development.

  • Peterside’s time out at Rex Lawson’s resting place

Peterside’s time out at Rex Lawson’s resting place

Dr. Dakuku Peterside cut the image of a man with lots of respect for the icon on whose final resting place he was standing. Truth is, Peterside relishes the life and times of the late , the late Cardinal Jim Rex Lawson, the Buguma-Rivers State music and culture ambassador.

Peterside, who is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) promised to immortalise the music icon and South-South culture ambassador.

He spoke in Buguma, home town of the music maestro during a meeting with traditional rulers in the kingdom.

Peterside, who personally visited the graveside of the renowned music icon, told the people of Buguma and Rivers people that he would do everything possible to keep alive, the memory of the music genius.  He also assured that his government will pay close attention to creativity and performing arts.

“Today, we stand before the remains of one of Africa’s greatest high life legends. I want to assure you my dear people of Buguma that Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson did not die in vain. We are therefore here to reinforce the values of love, unity and peace which Lawson espouses in his works. It is also our duty to ensure that we support these high ideals all the time.

“As a people, we must accept our collective failure, aside from the more obvious failure of the Nigerian state in immortalising this great son of Africa. Rex Jim Lawson was able to thrive artistically because the environment was conducive. As governor, I will provide the needed creative environment for every Rivers man and woman to express him or herself.  I will also promote arts and culture and ensure that we encourage talented people in arts, engineering, science and technology.

“Without a doubt, Lawson inspired a generation of musicians in Nigeria and beyond and we must keep his spirit alive. You will agree with me that this place should naturally be a tourist centre but I doubt how often you host tourists and scholars of African music. This environment is not even conducive and befitting for such homage even when people are interested in coming. I promise to reverse this when we are elected.

Peterside later prayed for the music icon and called on the people to vote massively for the APC so that the dream of immortalising Lawson would come to reality.

Peterside hails Buhari, pushes support for APC

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside,  has congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), winner of the APC presidential ticket.

He also urged Nigerians to come on board with the APC to move the country to loftier heights.

Peterside, who was among the delegates at the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the party’s National Convention in Lagos, called on Nigerians to unite and support the general whose enviable record is well known throughout the country.

He said in hs congratulatory message: “As you begin your campaign, our dear General, I urge you to remember that our country desperately needs hope and healing. This challenge, I must say, lies squarely on your shoulders as all eyes are on you to bring about the new Nigeria of promise that we all desire.”

Peterside extolled the virtues of the former Head of State, who is widely acknowledged in Nigeria and beyond for his unblemished record in government.

He said: “By any measure, you have remained the conscience of Nigeria in the last couple of decades by your actions.

“Today, you are celebrated and respected across our country as an exemplary leader and outstanding statesman. The verdict here today shows that Nigerians still remember and appreciate your contribution during your time in government.

“No doubt, you will bring your anti-corruption asset and good name to 2015 Presidential election which promises to be interesting with this historic and divine mandate.

“Again, let me, even at the risk of sounding repetitive, say that your victory today has raised the ante and our country will be better for it.  I am confident that you will rescue Nigeria from this unnecessary slide.”

According to Peterside,  Buhari’s emergence marked the beginning of better things to come from the APC.

He said: “Before this election today, I had prayed silently for this day particularly after reading through the General’s policy options which he sent to me about two months ago.

“His strategies, especially in the areas of infrastructure and economic policies are practicable and can easily address our lingering economic woes.”

He urged Nigerians, irrespective of age, sex, tribe or creed, to rally round Buhari and support the APC to effect the desired change in the country.

  • Why Rivers APC settled for Peterside

Why Rivers APC settled for Peterside

IN a decision that caught virtually all keen watchers of Rivers politics unawares, Peterside was last week announced as the APC consensus governorship candidate after months of intense negotiations, horse trading and compromise by the major stakeholders of the party.

Peterside, who was once the Commissioner for Works in the first tenure of the Amaechi administration, is from Opobo, a Riverine area of the state. A former Chairman of Opobo Nkoro Local Government Council, Peterside, who is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), was also a Special Adviser to ex-Governor Peter Odili.

His choice, it was learnt, may be in fulfillment of the governor’s promise not to hand over to an Ikwerre like he is.

The Nation however gathered that Peterside’s choice did not come as a surprise to close aides of the governor.

The relationship between the governor and the 45 years old lawmaker, sources say, dated way back during the latter’s student days at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.

Their path crossed at the residence of a mutual friend, with Peterside said to have impressed Amaechi with his boisterous nature and intelligence.

From that point, the relationship blossomed as the governor practically becoming a benefactor to the young Peterside. It was, in fact, alleged that it was through Peterside that the governor reportedly met his wife, Judith, before they finally got married in the early 90’s.

Another source revealed that shortly after the governor defected to the APC from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he had allegedly introduced Peterside to a national leader of his new party as “the young man I’ve always told you about.”

A native of Biriye in Opobo Kingdom, Dakuku attended Okrika Grammar School (OGS), Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, University of Port Harcourt, Georgia State University, Atlanta. Peterside is also an alumnus of Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

He earned degrees in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Haematology), Business Administration (Management) and certificates in Leadership and Project Management respectively. He has also attended several oil and gas courses globally.

He is a member of Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), Fellow of Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria (IMCN) and member, Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences of Nigeria.

  • …Ogoni in America endorse Peterside as consensus candidate

…Ogoni in America endorse Peterside as consensus candidate

Ogoni Stakeholders Forum (OSF) in the United States has endorsed the aspiration of Hon Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to lead Rivers State. The group in a statement from Washington DC has Mr. TamBari Lebee, say that, it was irritated at the rented numbers of Ogoni people which took to the streets in Port Harcourt on Thursday to protest the endorsement of Peterside as the governorship candidate of the APC.

OSF claimed Peterside “is a full fledged Ogoni man by all ramifications”.

The statement reads: “The choosing of Hon. Peterside on Wednesday as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State ahead of the governorship election next year in the state is the best thing that happened to Ogoni people. Among any Ogoni politician out there, Hon Peterside is the only politician that has rolled out developmental projects to Ogoni while he was the Commissioner of Works in Rivers State. He is responsible for all the tarred roads in Bori, the electrification of many villages of Ogoni under Amaechi’s administration.

“The lawmaker representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives who emerged as the party’s consensus governorship candidate during a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday will not only turn Ogoni around in terms of development but shall hand over to an Ogoni man after eight years. Opobo is very small; all the development shall be channeled to Ogoni who kept him from his teen to adulthood.

Meanwhile, Peterside, who has said the Rivers people are queuing behind his candidacy for the forthcoming election, urged citizens in the state to go and collect their Permanent Voter’s Card, (PVC).

Peterside who spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, urged the people to see any challenge they might encounter in the course of collecting the all-important card as a sacrifice for the sustenance of good governance.

  • Rivers APC okays Peterside as consensus governorship candidate

Rivers APC okays Peterside as consensus governorship candidate

The Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Dr. Dakuku Peterside is the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus governorship candidate for next year’s election in Rivers State.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, during a meeting of the caucus raised Peterside’s hand, in support of their decision to back the lawmaker’s aspiration.

Peterside, who represents Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro constituency and a former Rivers Commissioner for Works, was supported by almost all the stakeholders at the meeting, including the representative of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe, who was a governorship aspirant.

The Rivers Chairman of the APC, Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, who was also at the caucus meeting, later at a news conference at the state party’s secretariat on Forces Avenue, old Government Reservation Area (GRA), Port Harcourt, said that there would still be governorship primaries.

Prior to the APC’s stakeholders’ yesterday meeting, Amaechi and his allies received, a former Head of State, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.), who is one of the presidential aspirants of the party.

The teeming supporters of the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, also yesterday at the APC’s secretariat, picked House of Representatives’ nomination form for him, to represent Obio/Akpor constituency.

Kingsley Chinda, an ally of the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike is the current representative.

The representative of Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro constituency hails from riverine Opobo, the headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area. Abe is an indigene of Bera-Ogoni in Gokana LGA of the state, an upland part.

A top official of the APC, who was at the caucus meeting, but pleaded not to be named, said: “Governor Amaechi anointed Dr. Dakuku Peterside, by raising his hand. The Rivers governor, an Ikwerre, has been saying no Ikwerre person will succeed him, to ensure justice, equity and fairness.

“We are not surprised that Governor Amaechi is supporting Dr. Peterside, a riverine man. Since upland persons have been Rivers governors since 1999 to date, it is only fair to allow a riverine governor in 2015.”

  • Peterside…Another feather to his cap

    Peterside…Another feather to his cap

Many will find it difficult to believe that despite his tight schedule as the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Dakuku Peterside, had time to further his studies. His quest for new frontiers overshadowed his tight schedule and created space for Peterside to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He is through with the course work and is now qualified to be addressed as Dr. Dakuku Peterside or Dakuku Peterside, PhD.

Peterside will in August this year start a scheme to award local university scholarship to 46 underprivileged undergraduates from all the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. This scholarship is not for the children of the rich. It is meant to give education to the underprivileged or less privileged and other vulnerable members of Rivers State society.

This will compliment his post-graduate scholarship scheme. Every year the lives of 10 graduates from the Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State change for good. Last September, Harry Dunotio Zipporah, Utong, Barthemaeus Abraham, Ofik Tana,Oko Jaja Opuada,  Festus  Victor  Pepple and five  others left for the United Kingdom to pursue masters degrees, at no cost to them. All their expenses throughout the duration of their studies at A-list universities, such as the Kingston University, University of Aberdeen and University of Bedfordshire, will be borne by one man, Hon. Peterside through the platform of the Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Economic Zone Development Foundation.

These young men and women are the latest of the beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme through which Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro’s generation next are being groomed.

Last year, the Opobo, River State-born politician  brought resource persons from the United Kingdom alongside a former Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service( FIRS) to train upcoming women entrepreneurs, 300 women  from Andoni/ Opobo/ Nkoro benefitted from the first set of trainees. These women have all developed different business proposals which is being assessed for sponsorship of top ten viable ones which addresses a local need.

Peterside, whose friends describe as a man who despite his growing profile has remained the man they knew when he was nowhere the ladder of leadership, has been a Student Union Leader, aide to a governor, local government chairman, Commissioner for Works and now member of the House of Representatives. Those who know him insist Peterside has remained the humble man they knew right from his days at the Okrika Grammar School. What may have changed is that he has proven himself as a dependable leader driven by the desire for change. They have described him in these words: compassionate, intellectually-driven, imbued with leadership virtues, dependable and obsessed with integrity.

He has indeed come a long way; yet, those close to him say he is still a mission in progress. Wherever that mission takes him, what is clear now is that he is touching lives in different ways. He has become a role model of sorts to younger people garnering unprecedented followership because of his simplicity, consistency and sense of accommodation.

Peterside also facilitates the participation of Andoni and Opobo/Nkoro scholars in at least four other overseas scholarship programmes sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Rivers State government, Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) and oil giant Shell Scholarship.

Hon Peterside, who chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has been described as members of the committee as ‘a leader in whom they are well-pleased’. There is no doubt that Zipporah, Abraham, Festus Pepple and other beneficiaries of his scholarship scheme will echo the same sentiment about this man who has earned a reputation as a charismatic and disciplined leader, creative and hardworking legislator who is broad minded.

That Peterside cherishes education can be easily gleaned from the fact that despite his tight schedule as the chairman of a very busy House Committee, he still finds time for intellectual activities, such as delivering  lectures  in Nigeria and abroad and giving talks on areas of national importance. He has had the benefit of being educated in some of the best institutions at home and abroad. A native of Biriye, Opobo Kingdom, Dakuku attended the Okrika Grammar School (OGS), the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, the University of Port Harcourt, the Georgia State University, Atlanta, United States and the Harvard-Kennedy school, University of Harvard, United States.

He earned degrees in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Haematology), Business Administration (Management) and certificates in Leadership and Project Management. Peterside is a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), a fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria (IMCN) and a member of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences of Nigeria (MLSN).

He has held various leadership positions, such as Rivers State Commissioner for Works (2007-2011), where he anchored Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s transformation of roads and Infrastructural landscape of Rivers State, Board member of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority (GPHCDA), Executive Director of the Development and Leadership Institute (DLI) between 2005 and 2007, Chairman, Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area (2002-2003) during which  he was declared the most outstanding local government chairman by Dr Peter Odili, who was then the governor of Rivers State. Between 2003 and 2005, he was Senior Special Assistant to Governor of Rivers State on Works.

Peterside has also served as Special Assistant to Rivers State Governor on Youth and Student Affairs and Board member, Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), a Federal Government arts and research establishment.

Peterside, who is the Amaopusenibo of Opobo kingdom, was elected to represent Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro in the House of Representatives in 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Some weeks back, he dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a result of PDP’s endless crises. In a recent interview he said Rivers long term interest and that of his constituents  is his incentive for being in politics and that whenever that is compromised or threatened he is bound to stand up for the people. It is obvious that his recent defection to APC is because PDP could no longer protect and advance the interest of Rivers State. Aside serving as the chairman of the strategic Petroleum (Downstream) Committee, he also serves in the House most important committees on Anti-corruption, National Ethics and values; Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes; Co-operation and Integration in Africa, Electoral Matters; Industry; Communications and Works.

He established the Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Economic Zone Development Summit (AONEZDS) as a constituency engagement project.

  • Tales from Peterside scholars

    Tales from Peterside scholars

Beneficiaries of overseas post-graduate scholarship scheme bankrolled by the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Dakuku Peterside, narrate how the scheme many of them doubted has changed their lives, writes OLUKOREDE YISHAU

Almost all of them doubted it. In the last few months, however, their lives and world views have been shaped by it. Victor Pepple. Tana Ofik. Barthemeaus Utong. Opuada Oko-jaja. Raymond Awortu. Prince Ogbilikana. Hope Ngerebara. Hanson Pepple. And Zipporah Harry. They were the doubting Thomases, whose homes in the last few months have been London and Scotland, United Kingdom, where they are undergoing post-graduate degree programmes at no cost to them. Their bills are settled by a member of the House of Representatives and chairman of the Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Dakuku Peterside. He represents the Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency where these young men hail from.

Pepple said he was “badly ridiculed into this glorious opportunity today by my elder cousin, Theophilus Pepple”. It all started during the Christmas season of 2012 when posters for the Peterside overseas post-graduate scholarship scheme were pasted everywhere in Opobo Town and designated collection centres in Port Harcourt. When he saw it, he had cold feet about it. Reason: his previous experiences with sourcing for a scholarship to study abroad had always been a last minute disappointment even in situations where he met the criteria.

He felt this was just going to be another bad case.

So, he did not pick up the form until January 2013 when he saw that a cousin whom he hinted about the scheme had collected the form. He became an object of ridicule at home and hence got the form.

Though he had the dream of studying abroad someday, but how that would happen was largely a dream since he could not afford it. Raised from a humble background, he had faith that one day, his breakthrough would come.

Like Pepple, Oko-jaja did not attach much importance to information about the scholarship. In his words: “I got to hear about the scholarship from a friend, Mr. Tammy Aloma Cookey who travelled to Opobo Town for Christmas break in 2012. However, I received the information softly as I believed its outcome was going to be business as usual because of my previous experience in scouting for scholarships and jobs.

“Reluctantly, I got the form because of the pressure from my parents. Shortly after the submission, I was called by a friend from the university (FUTO) where I was undergoing a post graduate diploma in Geo-Physics that my name was announced over the radio, inviting me for a test at the ICT centre at Aba Road,Port Harcourt. I never prepared for the exam because I was frustrated with the business-as-usual and man-know-man virus that had eaten deep into the country and I had no one that could assist me.”

Utong did not have much doubt having benefitted from a scholarship scheme in the past. Utong, who is studying for an MSc in Mechanical Engineering in Kingston University, London, earlier studied at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus through the Rivers State government scholarship and was hoping to further his studies but could not due to lack of funds.

In the end, it turned out the fears of Pepple and others were unfounded.

Pepple said: “After the submission of completed form, I was told about the selection test by a friend of mine who heard my name announced over the radio, inviting shortlisted candidates for the test which held at the Rivers State ICT Centre along Aba Road Port Harcourt. I came into the hall barely having had about three days to prepare for the test; not knowing what to expect, I literally came in for the exam fasting. It was the first and most transparent public exam I have ever taken in my life. Not only did we see our scores on display at the expiration of allotted time for the exam, the decision on who has been awarded the scholarship was made right on the spot based on the result of the test. I emerged the first candidate for Engineering from Opobo Town. Even at that, I was still apprehensive as to whether there would still be last minute substitution of candidates. To God be the glory, nothing of such was done.”

Oko-jaja said: “Surprisingly, I met the shocker of my life. After the exam, the result was printed out in hard copy and given to us. I thought that was all. As I was about to leave the venue, we were called back and the decision was made publicly and successful candidates were picked, which I was also part of. At that instance, I began to have hope in the system that shortly the change we are clamouring for will come, when positions will be awarded on merit. This has been the first, unprecedented and transparent public exam I have ever taken in my life at that moment.”

    Good enough to emulate

Pepple, who is studying for a Master of Science degree in Engineering Business Management at the University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, said Peterside has kept his part of the bargain. He said full tuition and upkeep allowance as promised by the scholarship board have been paid.

“We were credited with over six months’ maintenance allowance for living expenses before arriving the UK. Beyond that, the Honourable has come to visit us in person to see how we are faring. This I find very rare of any public office holder in his capacity. For this, I remain eternally grateful.”

In their e-interviews, they urged other leaders to emulate Peterside.

Utong said to the best of his knowledge, the process of selection was transparent, adding: “If there is interference, may be I would not have been selected.”

The son of His Royal Highness, Chief and Mrs. Abraham Utong of Ilotombi Community in Andoni Local Government, said: “Dakuku Peterside is one of the rare leaders we have. He is an achiever and a true believer of transparent, generous and selfless leadership. I strongly encourage all politicians to emulate the sincerity and kind heart of Hon. Peterside to his people. Hon. Dakuku Peterside is a man of his words, God-fearing, sincere to his people, down-to-earth, selfless, generous and principled. And I want to congratulate him for all his achievements.”

Oko-jaja, who bagged his Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and studying Msc in Environmental Management in the University of Bedfordshire, said Peterside has written his name with an indelible ink.

“He is a man with the heart of gold and empathy for the all. A man of the people. Most times I get amazed at his humility. He is a selling brand all over the nation. I implore our leaders to emulate this icon.”

Ofik, a native of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, currently studying for an M.Sc. in Subsea Engineering, said: “I got selected as a beneficiary of the Hon. Peterside’s overseas post-graduate scholarship in June of 2013 after a very transparent selection process in which I emerged the best candidate for the engineering disciplines. The scholarship covers my tuition and living costs at the University of Aberdeen. Till date, the Hon. Dakuku Peterside has followed through with all the promises made to the scholarship beneficiaries. I am thus confident that I will not have any financial worries all through my degree programme. Academically, the experience so far has been quite tasking, as I have been enrolled in a world renowned university with an excellent reputation in engineering studies related to oil and gas development. I have had the opportunity to meet key industry players and develop both personally and professionally. This had only existed as a dream for me before the scholarship but today it’s become a reality. Many thanks to Hon. Dakuku Peterside. He is truly a leader who has the concern of the people at heart.”

Pepple added: “The name Dakuku Peterside will forever remain engrained in the hearts of many, for being a man who helped in writing the history of many generations even yet unborn. Beyond being a fast selling brand in Rivers State, the man has modestly proved that his words are honourable and he keeps his promise. He said he would empower the people of his constituency with qualitative education abroad, he did it. He said he would not interfere with the selection process for the candidates, not even on grounds of any primordial sentiments, and he did it. This I find very remarkable because if it were otherwise, people like me would most likely never have been on the preferred list and I know it. Whilst I strive to make the best of this opportunity given me, I urge all and sundry to emulate Hon. Dakuku Peterside in creating more empowerment opportunities for the upcoming generation, lest we remain in the woods.”

    Benefits of the initiative

Pepple, who bagged his Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum and Gas Engineering (Gas Engineering Option) from the University of Port Harcourt, class of 2010/2011, said: “Every honest and right-thinking mind would agree that education is the greatest legacy any society can give to its youths in order to secure a sustainable future. In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. Hence, Hon. Dakuku Peterside is championing the individual initiative and effort to empower youths of his federal constituency with life-time training, skills and competences that will outlive time and temporary materialistic gains.

“The concern of capital flight in paying foreign expertise to develop the state and nation at large is gradually put to rest as local professionals are now exposed to world-class education and training which can be deployed in growing the national economy. As Benjamin Franklin rightly noted: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest’.”

Awortu agrees that the scheme must be bought into by other leaders. Said he: “I strongly recommend that this exemplary leadership be emulated by other people in positions of authority. For this man who is developing human capacity in the communities and, by extension, the state at large instead of giving out guns, we must salute him.”

Awortu, who is studying at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, added: “Hon. Dakuku Peterside is an exceptional leader, a capacity builder, a community developer, a bridge builder, a man of his words (Talku na do man) and I will forever remain grateful to God for bringing him my way.”

Miss Ngerebara, who is studying for an Msc in Information Systems and Data Management, believes the country will develop better if leaders emulate Peterside.

She said: “Hon. Peterside is a very humble and kind-hearted man because only someone with such qualities will remember his people and carry out such charitable work. He has proven to be a great leader, who not only believes he needs to carry his people along but has also shown me that he really believes in our youths being the future; that is why he has done this. This kind act of his has inspired me greatly to give back no matter the position I get to because alot of people out there need it and to say a big thank you to Warisenibo Hon Dakuku Peterside.”
