The Akwa Ibom Elections Petitions Tribunal has received 11 petitions from aggrieved candidates in the National Assembly elections, it was learnt yesterday.

Of the 11 petitions, 10 were from All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates and one from Accord Party.

Of the 10 petitions from APC, seven were from House of Representatives candidates and the others from senatorial candidates.

APC candidate for Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District), Inibehe Okori, is challenging the declaration of Governor Godswill Akpabio, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as winner of the senatorial seat.

Also, APC’s candidate for Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo Senatorial Distrcit), Emmanuel Obot, is challenging the declaration of PDP’s candidate and former Finance Commissioner Bassey Albert, as winner of the March 28 National Assembly election for Uyo Senatorial District.

Bassey Etienam of the APC is challenging the declaration of Nelson Effiong of the PDP as the senator-elect for Akwa Ibom South (Eket Senatorial District).

Okori, in his petition, is challenging the eligibility of Akpabio to contest the election on the grounds that the governor was not properly nominated by the PDP.

The National Assembly elections were characterised by non-availability of result sheets, snatching of ballot boxes, multiple thump-printing, attacks on PDP’s opponents and fraudulent figures in the result sheets by suspected PDP agents.

  • Oshiomhole petitions Army

    •Protests illegal deployment of soldiers

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has petitioned the Commander of the 4 Brigade in Benin City, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye.

The governor was protesting the illegal deployment of soldiers in Owan and other parts of Edo North by a Lt. Colonel Abiodun Uwadia (rtd), the special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, for the election.

He threatened to sue the Nigerian Army at the International Criminal Court (ICC), following the terror unleashed on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and journalists covering the elections.

He said: “Reports reaching me showed that Lt Col. Uwadia (rtd) illegally and unconstitutionally deployed not less than three  trucks of soldiers to Owan to harass APC members.

“As I write, the retired Lt colonel was also issuing threats and directing the soldiers to shoot at sight, any APC member that resists his directives.

“Evidently, the conduct of the political office holder is not only illegal and unconstitutional, but a flagrant abuse of the military. It is not only reprehensible, it is unacceptable to abuse and misuse of the Army for partisan purposes.

“I wish to request you to use your good offices to call Uwadia to order and stop this unconstitutional deployment of soldiers for partisan objectives during elections.

“Failure to stem this patently illegal action can result in consequences that are likely to go beyond the shores of Nigeria. The world is watching”.

  • APC petitions police over attack on members

APC petitions police over attack on members

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has petitioned the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abubakar Morafa, over the attacked on its members in Obokun Local Government Area.

According to the party, some of its members were allegedly shot during its campaigns in the state. The petition signed by APC lawyer, Barrister Abdul Rasaq Adeoye, urged the police to investigate the shooting at Ilase and Ibokun towns where a political campaign organized by the party and attended by thestate governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, was disrupted.

Speaking, the  APC leader in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Mrs Dupe-Ajayi Gbadebo hinted that one of the members of the party who was shot during the attack, Agunbiade Bukola is now  on danger list. “We had set up our podium for the campaign and we moved to the street to welcome the governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, but  the PDP thugs stormed the venue, shot our members and disrupted the event. These thugs were sponsored by a prominent politician in the town who wants to be a senator by all means.

”He had earlier issued an ultimatum to our people that anybody that would not vote for him must vacate this town. We need protection and that is why we are calling on the police and other security agencies to do their job”. The politician has however debunked the allegation. He accused APC thugs of using the covering of the governor to unleash violence on PDP members in the area.

  • Okrika: APC petitions rights’ body, police

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about plots to attack its members in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo local government areas.

The party accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting to either arrest or eliminate its leaders and supporters in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo local government areas, using security agencies.

The petition was authored and signed by Chairmen of the APC in both councils, Christian Asifamaka (Okrika) and Israel Iboms (Ogu/Bolo).

They alleged that 10 party leaders in both local governments might be kidnapped before the elections.

The petition, dated March 17 was titled: “RE: Threat to peaceful elections in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo Local Government Areas of Rivers State, Nigeria.”

It said: “Now, the PDP and its Abuja authority have finalised plans to prevent the APC in these LGAs from voting in the elections.

“This they intended by using security agencies to arrest our leaders, party agents and community leaders sympathetic to APC a few days before the elections on false charges.”

They urged the NHRC to investigate their complaints because threats against the leaders and sympathisers were real and should not be ignored.

They said the police did not respond to their earlier complaints of serial attacks on the party’s offices and rallies.

“Based on the above and judging from the antecedents of the source of these threats, we urge you to take  steps to prevent further violation of our rights. We pray you to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice”, the petitioners said.

  • APC petitions NBC against abuses on Ekiti stations

APC petitions NBC against abuses on Ekiti stations

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) against “acts of unprofessionalism and abuses” in the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES).

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, the party called the NBC’s attention to the poor quality control mechanism arising from poor staffing in the leadership cadre of the television and radio stations.

“We have discovered that the core professionals who can advise on the quality control mechanism of the two stations have been sidelined in favour of Governor Ayodele Fayose’s cronies, who do not have requisite qualification to hold their positions.

“For instance, apart from the avalanche of contract staff who were hired on the basis of partisan solidarity, the Acting Director General of BSES, Lere Olayinka, has never practised in any reputable newsroom of any print or electronic media anywhere across the country.

“At best, he is a political journalist without any basic grounding in media practice and he is often used by politicians to malign innocent opponents.”

He said Olayinka’s lack of requisite qualification had adverse effects on quality programming and professional touch in the running of the radio and television stations.

The APC spokesman urged NBC to apply its standard to ensure and promote ethics and professionalism in the sensitive profession of electronic communication at BSES.

He urged NBC to investigate Olayinka’s qualification, pointing the agency’s attention to various abuses arising from political partisanship and unprofessional conduct at the two stations.

He listed the alleged directive by Governor Ayo Fayose to ban paid APC adverts and jingles in the stations with Olayinka  turning the stations to his boss’ megaphone to malign senior citizens and political opponents.

“The stations in one of their news bulletins in November accused the Chief Judge, Mr. Justice Ayodeji Daramola, of collecting N200 million from APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to influence the judge sitting on Fayose’s eligibility case to rule against him.

“About the same time, an allegation that the 19 APC House of Assembly members demanded N135million from the governor was also broadcast on the stations. All these were without evidence,” Olatubosun explained.

He added that in another news bulletin, the chief judge was accused of collecting N20 million from Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration to prevent Fayose’s inauguration, noting that in January, the stations broadcast the allegation that Fayemi donated N1.5 billion to Buhari/ Osinbajo Campaign Organisation without any proof.

Olatubosun said: “The stations also accused Fayemi of an attempt to transfer N950 million from a bank in Ghana but which the Ghana Central Bank stopped.

“These are all lies aimed at denting the image of these decent Ekiti citizens.

“The BSES is in the habit of copying social media gossips and broadcasting same in the stations’ news bulletins.”

The APC spokesman also accused Olayinka of unprofessional conduct by approving fabricated stories for the private producers and presenters of a popular Yoruba newspaper review programme, Lati Inu Aka.

  • Man petitions police, accuses estranged US-based lover of harassment over failed marriage plans

A 35-year-old trader, Mr Chike Okwunwanne, has petitioned the Nigeria Police Force over an alleged harassment by his estranged lover, Chinasa (surname witheld), who is a former police woman now based in United States of America (USA), following failed marriage plans. In a petition forwarded to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, in charge of Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, Mr Umar Manko, Okwunwanne’s lawyer, Barrister Omobolaji Adejumo, explained how Okwunwanne and Chinasa were match-made by a couple based in US. A copy of the petition obtained by our correspondent read in part: “Sometime in June 2013, a family friend and boss to our client (Okwunanne), Chief Benny Iwule, a Nigerian resident in the United States, introduced our client to one Chinasa, that she is desirous of settlling down with a Nigerian man. In the course of their discussions after phone numbers and contact details had been exchanged, she informed our client that she was 36 years old and our client agreed to the marriage proposal based on the assumption that they were within the same age grade. Not long after marital promises were sealed, she started bossing our client around such that he got fed up with her overbearing attitude, however, he condoned her. “Sometime around July/August 2013, she (Chinasa) volunteered to send some goods to our client to help her resell but he declined. He was therefore surprised when she sent him a message to receive a carton at a clearing agent’s place in Ajao Estate, Lagos. Upon opening the package, he realised that what she sent were fairly used goods. Our client then told her he doesn’t deal in secondhand or fairly used goods, he then decided to keep the goods for her.” Trouble, however, started when Chinasa visited Nigeria late 2013, when Chike discovered she is a 50-year-old. According to the petition, “Eventually when they met and had serious discussions, our client realised that the lady in question cannot be less than 50 years old. At that stage, our client told her he couldn’t in all honesty continue with the relationship as the foundation was built on deceit. Around this period, our client’s dad was hospitalised and he had to travel to his village to take care of his father. The lady asked for our client to wed her. She then started harassing our client for abandoning her to tend to his father on his death bed. Though the father later died owing to complications from his sickness, yet she refused to show compassion or understanding or any empathy whatsoever. ‘’When our client told her he had expended all his money on his father’s sickness, she asked him to borrow or face her wrath. Not long after, policemen from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Street, Lagos, came to pick up our client based on a phantom complaint of theft by Chinasa. On getting to the station, the lady (Chinasa) cornered our client again asking him if he was ready to marry her so she can drop the charges against him. Our client had to agree with her so as not to jeopardise his own freedom as it was three days to the burial of his late father. Our client is not desirous of marrying a lady old enough to be his mother and she has been threatening fire and brimstone that she would use the police to make our client’s life a living hell.’’ The controversial goods as gathered have since been taken into police custody at SCID, Panti,Lagos. Responding on the telephone, Chinasa, however, denied ever dating Chike. She explained that their relationship was just for business transactions. “Chike is my wanted suspect; he is a wanted man. He sold my goods worth $8,000 and used the money to buy a car. He has been invited by the police at SCID. I cannot date somebody like Chike and if we had dated, how come he does not know where I stay in Nigeria? How come he was not at the airport to pick me on my arrival? He was introduced to me for business purposes and not for marriage. “Although I have been told that the goods are with the police but I gave him the goods and not the police. He should be the one that will return the goods to me.He is running from me because I asked for my money. I have not seen Chike and my goods. He duped me and ran away with my money. Tell him to give me my goods. We don’t have anything in common except for business. He sold the goods and has refused to give me my money. Chike was introduced to me by Chief Benny Iwule, who is based in US. “How does he know I am older than him? Is he my father or parent? I lost my husband but I have a fiancée. With my level and exposure, marriage is not an issue to me.” A few hours later, one Pastor Bello Balogun Olusanya of Mountain of Solution, Owo, Ondo State, precisely 10.39 pm on Wednesday, called our correspondent on the telephone on behalf of Chinasa. Contrary to Chinasa’s denial that she never dated Chike, Pastor Balogun, during the phone conversation, explained that Chinasa and Chike actually dated. He said: “Chinasa gave me your phone number to speak with you because she claimed you wanted to publish a story about her. She is one of my members and she is very close to me. She claimed that Chike had duped her of the proceeds of some goods she sent to him for sale. She was actually introduced to that Chike for marriage. She sent me his name in 2013 asking me to pray in order to know if they are compatible for marriage and I told her that God does not approve of their relationship.I told her that even though Chike is single, still he won’t marry her.” Speaking from her base in US, Mrs Mercy Iwule, whose husband had introduced Chinasa to Chike, explained that Chinasa was peddling falsehood against Chike. “Chinasa is just harassing Chike for no just reason. My husband and I actually introduced her to Chike, who had been managing our businesses in Nigeria. She said she wanted to marry a Nigerian man and we introduced her to Chike not knowing that she was older than him because she has a petite figure. Chike did not steal her goods or use the money to buy a car. I was the one who asked Chike to start using the Toyota Sienna car I left in Nigeria because I also have another Toyota Pathfinder Sports Utility Vehicle in our house in Lagos. “She lied to Chike that she was 36 and Chike said he does not want to continue with the relationship when he discovered she was older than him. She then vowed to punish him for breaking her heart and had been using law enforcement agents to harass the poor boy.’’

  • More petitions filed to cancel elections

More petitions filed to cancel elections

It certainly hasn’t been the very best of times for embattled President of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF), Amaju Pinnick following ascension to office, as SL10.ng can report that more petitions have been filed with the NFF Electoral Appeals committee to have the September 30 elections completely cancelled.

Former NFF executive committee member and contestant for the position of first Vice President in the September 30 elections, Muazu Suleiman has also joined the list of petitioners praying for the election which brought Pinnick in as the NFF President to be cancelled due to some ‘inconsistencies’.

“The electoral committee in 2010 didn’t shy away from doing the right thing as they knocked off certain candidates and they couldn’t contest because the President came from the northern part of Nigeria. The same thing when it came to the state.

“As far as the North-West geopolitical zone was concerned, the election was conducted and Shehu Adamu from Kaduna State emerged in the first round and the second member was to be elected in the second round and Sabo Babayaro was knocked off because he also was from Kaduna State.

That is how it should have been done this time because we can’t have two members from the same state.

“This is the problem and this is the inconsistency and the injustice that I have seen and I am praying for the election to be cancelled,” he said.

  • Niger East: APC candidate petitions tribunal

Niger East: APC candidate petitions tribunal

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Niger East Senatorial by-election, Mr David Umaru, has challenged the declaration of Dr. Shem Zagbayi Nuhu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the poll.

Umaru is praying the National Assembly Election Tribunal sitting in Minna, the Niger State capital, to declare him winner of the by-election, “having polled majority votes”.

Joined as respondents are 388 others, including the PDP, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and INEC presiding officers.

Umaru is praying the tribunal to cancel results in 378 polling units and recalculate the total result.

He said the votes ascribed to each of the candidates were not their actual scores, but the product of “deliberate wrong entries and collation of figures made by the third respondent’s agents or officers at the polling units”.

On September 7, INEC declared Nuhu winner of the by-election with 92,056 votes while Umaru got 87,406 votes.

Umaru said: “If the results of the polling units affected by these non-compliance and irregularities are cancelled and deducted from the final scores of the candidates, I shall have the highest number of valid votes cast at the election, thus: APC 87,405-22,491 = 64,914  PDP 92,056-53,837 = 38,219.

“Nuhu did not secure the majority of lawful votes and is not qualified to contest the election, having not been properly sponsored by his party (PDP) in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.”

  • Group petitions minister on Shell

    Group petitions minister on Shell

The Niger Delta Pollution Vanguards Movement (NDPVM) has petitioned the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, alleging that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) wants to cancel the Trans Niger Pipeline Loopline Project (TNLP).  It was designed to enhance the operating environment in the region.

In a letter signed by Alaliboz Nathaniel, Precious Obonima and Paul Alakiri, and addressed to the minister, the body warned that the cancellation of the project would affect the progress of the Niger Delta, considering the deteriorating environmental situation, occasioned by crude oil spillages on the ruptured existing pipeline and the incidence of crude oil theft by persons engaged in illegal bunkering.

The group said in the letter dated August 7 that the increase in illegal bunkering, which has been enhanced by the existence of ruptured points on the pipeline, is detrimental to the transformation agenda of the President Goodluck  Jonathan administration and its commitment to the stoppage of crude oil theft and increased revenue earnings that are essential for the development of the country.

The petitioners said: “Our findings revealed that this TNPL project, which is expected to stop environmental degradation and illegal bunkering, may not see the light of the day in view of Shell’s ill-conceived efforts and plans to cancel the project.”

A father, Chief Raheem Badmus, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, for the alleged killing of his son, Oluwatobi at ‘B’ Division Police Station in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

In the petition by his lawyer, Badmus said his only son died as a result from injuries sustained when in police custody over allegation of stealing a handset.

Badmus said the death of his son rattled him as the boy was hale and hearty.

Badmus urged the IGP to probe the death to bring the perpetrators to book.

The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Wole Ogodo, said the Area Commander in charge had commenced investigation.
