PFC, Penafort Energy unveil football tourney  for over-40s in Lagos

PFC All-Star Football Club, in collaboration with Penafort Energy Nigeria Limited, has unveiled plans for a one-month football tournament strictly for players aged 40 and above.

Announced at a press conference held over the weekend in Lagos, the competition will kick off on September 20 with 12 teams vying for cash prizes.

Speaking at the event, President of PFC All-Star, Super High Chief Simeon Emelife, said the initiative aligns with the club’s mission of leaving a lasting legacy in the Lagos football scene.

“We founded this club with one clear vision — to nurture local talent, promote the spirit of sportsmanship, and bring top-level football closer to the grassroots, our players are training harder, our fan base is growing stronger, and the PFC All-Star name is echoing beyond Lagos into national conversations,” he said.

Emelife, who thanked fans, sponsors, and media partners for their support, emphasized that the tournament was about more than competition.

“Today marks more than just the signing of a sponsorship deal. It also marks the celebration of a shared vision, one that highlights excellence, resilience, teamwork, and community empowerment,” he added.

PFC’s new partner, Penafort Energy, described the collaboration as a strategic step in community development and brand visibility.

Managing Director Emmanuel Heze represented by the Legal Adviser of Penafort Energy, Benjamin Olalekan stressed that the company’s commitment extended beyond business into powering “dreams, like the one that PFC is pioneering.”

He added: “We believe that football is a universal language that unites people, uplifts communities, and inspires generations. Partnering with PFC is not just about jerseys and logos, it is about legacy.”

Olalekan further echoed this, noting that the football sector in Nigeria remains “undermined” despite its vast potential.

“This is a goldmine that, if constructively engaged, will bring enormous benefits. We want to see Nigerian football developed in a way that makes the country a true centre of attraction,” he said.

He criticized the lack of adequate support for local players compared to the attention lavished on foreign leagues, urging for a holistic approach to sports development.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman, Chief Chigozie Mwako, popularly known as “the Wise One,” described the competition as “a gathering of veterans and legends who have played football globally and won laurels for Nigeria.”

He assured that logistics, security, hospitality, and officiating would be handled at the highest professional standards. “This tournament is more than a competition, it is a legacy of unity.

“Football aids will not be permitted, we have gadgets, and measures in place to detect anyone under 40, If you are less than 40, we will disqualify you immediately,” he said.

On incentives, Nwafor revealed that winners will walk away with substantial cash prizes. “The first position goes home with ₦3 million, second position ₦2 million, and third position ₦1 million. Some of us have never heard this kind of monetary reward for participating in a tournament before,” he said.

The month-long competition promises to blend the nostalgia of veteran football with the excitement of modern sporting events, while also serving as a platform for fostering discipline, fair play, and community engagement.
