  • CAN, PFN to politicians: power belongs to God

    •Body seeks observer status

Chairman Lagos State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Apostle Alex Bamgbola has called on politicians to contest with the fear of God.

He said they will account for every action they take before and after election, saying being in power is not as important as being at peace with God.

Bamgbola spoke at the stakeholders’ summit with political parties/candidates in Lagos State organised by Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria Lagos State in partnership with Directorate of Social Security Outreach Intergovernmental Relations.

Tagged enforcing the political destiny of the church, the event attracted presidential and gubernatorial candidates of different parties.

Also in attendance were party leaders, technocrats, missionaries, civil society groups, church leaders and government officials.

The CAN helmsman noted only God gives power to men, saying all the struggles of political agitators outside God will have consequences.

He said: “All power belongs to God that is why Jesus is the Almighty God and the source of true and genuine power. He gives power to men.

“No matter how long you want to live, it is for a short time, even when you inherit power, death will take you away someday.

“If your approach to governance as a politician is on the basic of selfish interest ad struggle for power, the whole nation will be the loser”.

He told Christians in office to serve God and humanity.

According to him: “When God gives you power, you have the options of using it for God and you will receive greatly reward.”

On the forthcoming elections, he said: “Christian should rise up and pray because the signals are troubling.

“Powers belong to God. If He gives it to you, take it but if He does not, do not trouble this nation. We have enough troubles on our hands.”

Chairman Lagos PFN, Bishop Olusola Ore, charged Christians to come out en masse and vote for credible candidates.

He said: “Christians should vote dispassionately for people who have track records of service, probity, honesty and not those with sweet tonguing them because so many promises have been given in the past but implementing them have been the problem.”

He noted that INEC will not count prayers but votes and the church is optimistic that our will counts.

He stressed that PFN has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be one of the election observers.

This, he said, will allow the church to contribute to electoral transparency and credibility.

He assured the PFN will not trade-off integrity on the altar of political correctness.

“We are not a beggarly organization. If you have a call of God to serve in any capacity, come to us and we will pray along with you.”

  • PFN fetes inmates’ families

PRISON Fellowship Nigeria (PFN) has conducted a Christmas party for families of prison inmates in Lagos.

Tilted: Angel Tree Programme (ATP), the event held at Methodist Church of the Trinity,Tinubu Square (MCTT).

No fewer than 20 families attended the event, some with as many as five children.

The ATP Coordinator, Olaka James Endy, said PFN conducted the event to make members of families of inmates feel at home.

He said when a father is imprisoned, the wife and children suffer.

According to him: ‘’The family suffers, school fees can no longer be paid, dreams shatter or die.

“But we are here to encourage you; put smiles on your faces and show you that we care,’’ he added.

PFN Lagos Chairman Rev John Olawepo encouraged the families to be strong in their faith and resolute.

He said: ‘’There is no one without a challenge. At times when there is a challenge, your family or friend may abandon you.

“We are brothers and sisters. Whatever is your problem, we are here to give it a solution.”

He said a little love shown the family members would go a long way to ameliorate their situation.

MCCT Bishop, Right Rev. Omotayo Babalola, whose church sponsored the event, urged the families not to give up because God was aware of their circumstances.

He said they should trust in God. He pledged the church’s continuous assistance.

The highlight of the event was a Bible quiz contest for the children and presentation of gifts and cash to every family.

  • PFN launches movement for youths

National Youth Coordinator of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Rev. David Ize-Iyamu has lunched a Youth Revolution Movement (YRM) to prepare young Nigerians for leadership, governance, and participation in the electoral process.

At the inauguration in Lagos, Ize-Iyamu explained that YRM will transit youths from passive onlookers to commitment in the electoral process so, they can become the change they seek.

Ize-Iyamu, an administrator and nationalist, added that the movement is neither violent nor militant, but a peaceful, yet firm and structured drive towards positive self-determination, national pride, social consciousness, and measurable change.

He said given their population, youths must be active in voter registration and stand for election to become effective leaders.

“It is no secret that the youth population is the largest sub-group in our national demography, but unfortunately the larger percentage of this sub-group exhibit severe apathy towards leadership, politics or governance,” Ize-Iyamu said.

He, however, exonerate youths from such apathy, as this has been a consequence of the lack of inspiring leadership the country has experienced.

Contrary to claims by some critics that youths have lost faith in the country due to bad governance, Ize-Iyamu added that youths have to be given renewed hope to have faith in Nigeria again, and buy into the process of national re-evolution.

On the difference between YRM and similar groups that have been around, Ize-Iyamu explained that his group will engage presidential aspirants, and ensure they implement their promises to the electorate.

He insisted: “Nigerian youths are well informed and aware of the leadership role youths across the world are taking in driving social, political and economic change.

“For instance, Nollywood was created from scratch by youths without government support. YRM is out to mobilise youths to take centre-stage in crafting the future.

“Our youths are no longer moved by rhetoric. Their conversations on social media, on the streets, and in organised fora show they crave inspired, responsible, empathetic, and credible leadership.”

The YRM convener said the movement intends to inform, educate, lead, and sometimes sensitise youths, to action and participation in the political value-chain.

“We will show practical and dynamic approaches to achieve solutions to national problems, and inspire youths to take responsibility for those solutions,” he said.

  • How to end agitations, by PFN

Fairness and equity would automatically end agitations for self- actualisation across the nation, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has stated.

Its national president, Dr Felix Omobude, said when governments treat citizens equally and fairly, their various agitations heating up the nation would cease.

Omobude spoke last week during a two-day presidential working visit to Lagos.

He said: “We believe that Nigerians have the rights to agitate and demand whatever they want within the ambits of the law.

“But much more importantly, we believe that these agitations are because of lack of sense of belonging as well as fair treatments of all Nigerians.

“If government does what is right and treats Nigerians equally, these agitations would die natural death.”

He said governments must pay attention to cries for restructuring, saying the current structure of the nation is not working.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that we are not operating at optimum level. Many things appear lopsided.

“Those calling for restructuring have a point because this nation is not working like it should. Governments should pay attention so that we can move on.”

He, however, warned agitators against violence, saying groups such as the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) have to make their demands known in peaceful and decorous manners.

Omobude called on Christians to sustain prayers for the nation, assuring that Nigeria would emerge stronger from current challenges.

  • PFN urges tribal leaders to eschew hate speech

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has called on the political class and tribal leaders to eschew hate speeches if they want a strong, virile and united Nigeria.

It said it was important for all Nigerians to imbibe and adopt the spirit of selfless life for the purpose of moving the nation forward.

National President of PFN, Reverend Felix Omobude, who stated this in his Sallah message, urged the Muslim faithful to demonstrate the virtues of love and sacrifice which are the hallmarks of the Eid-El-Kabir festival.

Dr. Omobude’s Sallah message, which was contained in a press statement endorsed by his media aide, Deacon Ralph Okhiria, enjoined the adherents of Islam to be obedient to God by showing love towards one another.

According to the statement, “The two holy books (the Bible and the Koran) talk about sacrifice. Therefore, we should be ready at all times to sacrifice for one another, irrespective of our religious affiliations, and also to make the desired sacrifices for the peace, growth and development of Nigeria.

“With fervent prayer and love, Nigerians can live together in peace as brothers and sisters, and contribute to the progress and unity of the country.

“It is important for all Nigerians to imbibe and adopt a spirit of living a selfless life for the purpose of moving our great nation forward.”

  • ‘Buhari sent by God to deliver Nigeria’

‘Buhari sent by God to deliver Nigeria’

The Chairman of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Omu-Aran, Kwara, Pastor David Omorinoye, said on Monday President Muhammadu Buhari’s safe return was an indication of his divine call to deliver the country.

Omorinoye, a former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Irepodun local government area of the state, stated this during a special prayer for the nation’s socio-economic development in Omu-Aran.

He said the safe return of the President showed that the prayers of Nigerians for his quick recovery have been answered.

The PFN chairman said the President’s zeal and sincerity in governance had made him to be unperturbed despite the criticisms of his medical vacation.

Omorinoye, who is the pastor in charge of Bible Faith Church, Omu-Aran, said President Buhari and other world leaders were human beings chosen by God to lead their various countries.

“They require the support and prayers of the followers to succeed.

“We should try as much as possible to refrain from speaking ill of those at the helm of affairs because they are God’s appointees.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s safe return should rather unite us as law abiding citizens of this great country to find lasting solution to its numerous challenges,” he said.

  • Why CRK must stand alone in education curriculum – PFN

Why CRK must stand alone in education curriculum – PFN

Pentecostal church leaders across the nation on Thursday rejected the revised Basic Education Curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

The curriculum, they said, is unacceptable because it collapses Christian Religious Studies (CRS) as part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values.

The church leaders insisted that CRS should stand alone as a subject to foreclose the possibility of some states acting against the interests of Christian students.

They spoke with reporters at the end of the 2nd quarter National Executive Council of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Lagos.

The well-attended meeting attracted Pentecostal leaders like General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo; Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM); Bishop Mike Okonkwo, National President of PFN, Bishop Felix Omobude; its vice, Bishop Wale Oke; National Secretary, Apostle Emmanuel Kure and other state chairmen of the body.

Omobude said the fusing of CRS into Religion and National Values was without justification while the explanations of NERDC were also unconvincing.

He said: “There is really no need nor is there any justification for the needless confusion and uncertainty the NERDC has created which has opened up the implementation of the curriculum to the whims and caprices of people with vested interests who want to impose their religious preferences on students.

“Collapsing CRK as only a part of Religion and National Values forecloses the opportunity of the subject being studied at the tertiary level by students who might so desire and this is unacceptable to us.”

While applauding the compulsory study of foreign languages, Omobude however stated more languages such as Spanish and others beyond French and Arabic should be included in the curriculum.

The expansion, he said, will allow students “enjoy greater flexibility in foreign language study and not be compelled to study a language they have no interest in, as its being reported in some states.

“We are aware of orchestrated plans to subtly use this policy as a means of forceful religious indoctrination and we maintain our stand against it,” the PFN president added.

Oyedepo maintained the revised curriculum was targeted against Christian students, calling for its reversal to guarantee religious harmony across the nation.

“What we are saying is that it is not acceptable to the Christian community. If students cannot study CRK in secondary school, it means we won’t have it at the tertiary level,” he reiterated.

On calls for restructuring, Omobude restated commitment of Pentecostal Christians to a united Nigeria.

He, however, called on the federal government to do all it can to assuage the fears and concerns of agitators through enthronement of true federalism.

“We urge the government to pay attention to the calls for restructuring and find a way to push for further devolution of powers while adopting an all-inclusive approach to governance and development in the country,” he added.

He condemned the quit notice given by northern youths to indigenes of South East extraction in the north, saying all Nigerians have the right to “live anywhere without fear of harassment.”

“Those who beat the drums of war should not be forgetful of our pasts. We cannot afford to go through the path of war again as a nation,” he stated.

Okonkwo called on northern elders to call their youths to order, saying the quit notice was a declaration of war against the south.

The PFN argued nomadic cattle-rearing has become outdated, urging states to “build ranches and develop reserves where cattle owners can manage their animals without travelling long distances where they stray into farms, destroy crops and constitute nuisance and threat to other communities.”

  • If fathers do their work, Nigeria will do less – Osinbajo

If fathers do their work, Nigeria will do less – Osinbajo

If Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has his way, those who loot the treasury will no longer find sanctuary in the House of God.

At a special service at the Aso Villa Chapel yesterday to mark Fathers’ Day, the Acting President urged churches to ostracise looters.

Such people, he said, should not be held in high esteem because they brought the country to where it is today.

Osinbajo enjoined fathers to be exemplary leaders that build generations of righteous men and women.

He said: “I want to say that all of our leaders, the Christian leaders; the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), that it is the role of the church to build this nation. And the church has that role because God has said concerning us that we are the light of the world and we are the salt of the earth. That role is a very difficult role. We are not to teach the world how to be like the world but to teach the world how to be like our saviour, Jesus Christ.

Every time we come to the church, we are told about giving, but we need to talk more about honesty. Just now His Eminence said Nigeria’s great problem is not an absence of prosperity but that we have enough for our needs but we don’t have enough for our greed. The greed of many is what has landed this country to where it is today. Many in position of authority, it is the greed that has landed us to where we are. Many who say the reason why they are stealing is because they need to have an arsenal for future political experiment, it is a lie! It is greed.

“And if the church says you are not allowed to steal and we will ostracise the thieves in our midst. If a man’s resources, what a man has does not measure up to what he earns, if you found that a man has more money than he should have, if a man is earning a salary in a civil service or public service and he has houses everywhere, we have to hold him to account. He must first be held to account in the church. He must first be told in the church, we will not allow this. If the church ostracises the thieves; if the church says we will not accept thieves here or we will ensure that we expose you, you are stealing the resources of our nation, you are stealing the resources of a private company or other establishments, then we will not have the kind of problems that we have in this country. If only the church can.

TRENDING: Whistle blowing: Court orders Tsav to appear in court

“When I listened to His Eminence a few minutes ago, talking about the importance of the type of training we received as a child; the type of training where you were taught primarily about integrity; that you must be a person of integrity; that you must be truthful, you must be honest. That is the foundational teaching. Even knowing the Ten Commandments was enough to teach you about righteousness. That is so important especially for us who are Christians.”

Fathers, the Acting President said, follow the footsteps of Abraham who God chose in order to “command his children and household in the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice.”

He adminished fathers to love their wives and refrain from domestic violence.

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara lamented the collapse of family system in the country.

He said: “We should invest more, really as a nation, in fatherhood or in family. And when children are properly brought up, you will see that most of the resources we channel towards control of crime and so many other government programmes, there will be no need for them. Because we will have some kinds of transformation that only take place at the family level.

“Certain things cannot be done by the government like we cannot just outsource discipline in a home, the issue of imparting or instilling morality in the lives of our citizens. The government certainly cannot do that; it is the role of the family. So when we celebrate fathers like this, we celebrate fatherhood, we emphasise on the importance of the family as a unit in bringing up those components of society, performing its role and then turning citizens that are compliant. That, therefore, means that we won’t be spending money in fighting crime.

When fathers do their work, the nation will have less work to do. And when next we have people in leadership who fail, who are patently corrupt, the question shouldn’t be ‘who is this?’ The question should be ‘who is the father of that person?’ I congratulate the fathers.

The Speaker urged fathers to be exemplary in their conduct, saying:

“If you wouldn’t want your children to follow your example, then it means you are failing as a father. And once father fails, family fails, certainly, the nation will fail because the family is the strength of a nation.”

He described Fathers’ Day as one of the most important days in the life of a nation, saying a nation is a collection of families.

According to him, every leader, every good person, every armed robber, every militant, every terrorist comes from the family and when the family collapses, the nation collapses.

In his sermon titled: “Fathers to the rescue of our beloved nation,” Methodist Church of Nigeria Prelate Samuel Kalu Uche, said God established the family as a basic and foundation unit of a country.

“God has made fathers as the head and this assignment must be exercise in love, honesty, gentleness and unity. The responsibility of a father makes him to be accountable to God. A father must render a selfless service and he must be faithful to his wife,” he said.

Attributing one of the problems besetting the nation to failure of many fathers, he pointed out that many fathers could not give their children good education, hence, they turned out to be criminals in the country.

He noted that in the past children were taught to respect elders and to be upright, contrary to what is obtainable today where children are abandoned and they constitute nuisance in the society.

The clergyman, who prayed for President Muhammadu Buhari’s quick recovery, said “anyone wishing the president dead is a wicked person.”

“We should pray for the father of the nation to recover,” he said.

Aso Villa Chapel Chaplain Pastor Seyi Malomo described the day as” a day to celebrate our source.”

He said: “Every one of us has a source. There is a source of our heavenly father but that heavenly father graciously also gave us physical fathers. Every one of us traced our source to a father. And as we celebrate today, we are acknowledging ourselves; our President who is the source of this administration, the reason why we are here.

“And we must celebrate him and we are celebrating all the fathers to let them know that they are really appreciated and that we are praying for them that more of their responsibilities, more of their roles will be felt by us and make our nation better and make our families better and make our communities better.”

The two Bible readings from Ephesian 5: 22-33 and Ephesian 6: 1-4 were read by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi and Dogara.

As part of the activities to mark the occasion, gifts were presented to President Buhari; Acting President Osinbajo; Senate President Bukola Saraki; Dogara; the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and the churches in Nigeria.

There were also song presentations by the children and the fathers to celebrate the day.

Other in attendance included Archbishop of Methodist Church Abuja, Oche Job; Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Taiwo Abidogun.

  • PFN reelected Omobude for another four years

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has returned Dr Felix Omobude as its national president for a second term of four years.

At its 14th biennial conference in Benin City last week, the PFN leadership and General Assembly expressed appreciation for the work done by the Omobude-led National Executive Council in its first term.

The body voted for Omobude and the executive council to run its affairs for another four years.

To serve with Omobude are:  Bishop Francis Wale Oke as Deputy National President; Apostle Emmanuel Kure, National Secretary; Rev. Felix Meduoye, National Treasurer and Bishop Goddy Okafor, Deputy National Secretary.

Others are Rev. Michael Tosin-Oni, National Financial Secretary; Barrister Alex Izinyon SAN as National Legal Adviser; Pastor John Ayodele, Internal Auditor; Bishop Emma Isong, Publicity Secretary; Archbishop John Praise Daniel, Welfare Officer and Dr Mercy Ezekiel as National Prayer coordinator.

Thousands of delegates from the federation attended the conference, which attracted Acting President Yemi Osibanjo, Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki and leaders of the Pentecostal community, including Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Bishop David Oyedepo and others.

In a communiqué after the conference, the PFN called on the federal government live up to its constitutional responsibility of securing live and property, especially in the face of terrorist activities by herdsmen and the killings in Southern Kaduna.

It also expressed concerns over hardship experienced by Nigerians, asking the federal government to take urgent to mitigate pains of the masses.

These, the PFN said, will curb inflation, stem the tide of unemployment and find solution to the exchange rate that has eroded the value of the naira.

It wishes President Muhammadu Buhari a speedy recovery and quick return to his desk to carry on with the task of addressing the challenges presently facing the nation.

  • Fulani herdsmen worse than Boko Haram, says PFN

Fulani herdsmen worse than Boko Haram, says PFN

Fulani herdsmen have caused the nation more havoc than the Boko Haram terrorists, Lagos chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has declared.
The body said Fulani herdsmen have killed more Nigerians and created worse security tensions than the terrorists.
It called on President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest the nefarious activities of the herdsmen across the nation.
Lagos PFN chairman, Bishop Sola Ore, stated these at a media conference by the body in Lagos last week.
Ore, in a strong-worded speech, said: “There are obvious signs a group worse than Boko Haram is here with us in the name of Fulani herdsmen.
“We are left with no alternative than to conclude that there is something in the offing that is not clear to many Nigerians.”
Ore lamented that no herdsman has been arrested, let alone prosecuted for the atrocious killings in Southern Kaduna.
“Who has been prosecuted for the killings? Who has been sent to jail? Is this government saying it does not know the masterminds of the dastardly acts?”
The PFN helmsman also bemoaned the fate of Christians in the current administration, declaring that no one can Islamise the nation as insinuated in many quarters.
“Nigerian Christians have suffered too much. We have been killed. We have been brutalised. We have been denied our basic rights.
“Many of our churches in the north have had to close down due to insurgency but even before the security challenges, many northern states denied our right to land ownership when it comes to church building.
“We believe Nigeria is a multi-religious state and people should be allowed to worship God the way they want. The continuous repression of a particular faith will not augur well for us as a nation,” Ore stated.
He supported self-defence, saying it would be foolish for Christians to allow herdsmen kill them in any part of the nation.
“If a thief comes to my house and wants to kill me, I would kill him before he gets to me.
“There is a time to carry swords. I will kill you before you kill me and that does not stop me from being a Christian. In fact after that, I will be more Christian.”
On the suspended governance code of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, Ore said the PFN is not against probity and accountability.
He, however, alleged some sections of the code were satanic, insisting they were targeted at independent Pentecostal churches, which he claimed were more visible in the nation.
“We are against tenure for church leaders. Government does not have any right to put its nose into the running of affairs of churches.
“While we are ready to abide by the codes and laws that are legitimate, we will like to state that the Pentecostal body in Lagos state will resist any attempt to frustrate the church,” the general overseer of Love Aglow Ministries, Festac, stressed.
Ore explained that the Lagos PFN was already registering genuine members with a view to flushing out bad eggs.
He disowned Pentecostal preachers that sell “objects to members, collecting money for miracles, exploiting members and taking advantage of their spiritual ignorance to dupe,” insisting “they are not part of us.”
