No Nigerian rapper comparable with M.I – Phenom

Hip-hop artist Phenom has stated that his counterpart, M.I Abaga, is incomparable to any other Nigerian rapper.

The statement came in response to a viral tweet asking fans to choose between M.I Abaga and Vector as the better hitmaker.

Phenom, known for his hit song “Man Dem,” expressed respect for Vector but emphasised that M.I Abaga stands in a league of his own.

“Shey una dey whine? I love and respect Vector, but no Nigerian rapper should be compared to M.I,” he wrote.

M.I Abaga and Vector have a well-documented history of rivalry with the artists releasing diss tracks aimed at each other in the past.

MI Abaga and Vector gave Nigerian rap fans a show in 2019 after both rappers went public with a beef that has been lingering for years.

M.I. took the first shot on ‘Martell Cypher II: Purification’ with Vector replying with ‘The Purge’.

Things quickly went downhill with MI releasing the stinging diss track ‘The Viper’ which Vector replied with ‘Judas The Rat’.

While MI was regarded to have had the better song, his decision to reach out to Vector for a truce behind the scenes was a move that many agree lost him the battle. They would later settle their beef and collaborate on the Pheelz-produced ‘Crown of Clay’.

While some agreed with Phenom’s assessment, others argue that Vector and other rappers, such as Olamide and Falz, also deserve consideration as among the best in the country.

@Darlington_Cza stated: “Phyno bodies MI hit for hit, bar for bar. GOAT.”

@Datboiybee said: “Hits, Olamide, Ice prince, Mi, Phyno. In this order.”

@eblebe_iro: argued: “Before you say anything pls listen to these with an understanding mind. Vec is underated in this rap game. All respect m but vec na beast wey fit stand mi.”

@bjcodes2: wrote: “Vector can be compared to him in every way my bro . Rap skills? Yeah you can compare them . Except if you’re talking about something else we don’t know about. Big ups to both of em” .

I got addicted to drugs for song inspiration – Phenom

Hip-hop artist, Topa Onimowo aka Phenom, has recounted how he got addicted to illegal substances as a growing artist in the music industry.

He said he became addicted to cannabis because he got the inspiration for his first hit song by ingesting it.

The rapper spoke in the latest episode of the Terms and Conditions podcast where he mentioned that he had thought ingesting would inspire him to record more hit songs.

He, however, said he no longer deals with drugs.

He said: “I wasn’t doing drugs before music. I don’t do drugs anymore, though. I was using it to boost my creativity.

“When I started smoking, I started with just puffing. And I remember, the first time I smoked I made my first hit song. So I felt like Igbo (cannabis) gave me my hit song. So, I kept on going back. I did ‘Murder Dem’ with Wizkid, it was Igbo. I was so high that they were holding me in the studio to record. I always went back to smoking weed because I felt like that was my source.”

I regret not accepting Wizkid’s record deal – Phenom

Hip-hop artiste, Topa Onimowo aka Phenom, has recounted his regrets after refusing a record deal from Wizkid years ago.

The ‘Man Dem’ crooner said he received juicy offers from Wizkid, Olamide, and others to join their record labels at the peak of his career but he declined because he was “loyal” to the now defunct Knight House record label, where he was under contract at the time.

Speaking in the latest episode of the Terms and Conditions podcast, the fallen-from-grace rapper said his career could have taken a more positive trajectory if he had accepted to join Wizkid’s label.

Phenom said: “Wizkid approached me at some point. We had this great chemistry. He said he wanted me on his team. He said wanted him and me to work on my album. But I was with a label. I’m that loyal. And I remember I asked my mum what’s on the ground and my mum was like, ‘No. You signed with these people, finish your contract with them.’ That was what it was, mehn.

“Even Wizkid’s deal was not as pleasant as many others that I don’t know. Me and Olamide had a conversation as well. But a lot of other guys approached me too. I had a deal of N100 million with a G-waggon at some point. I had crazy deals.

“The only regret I do have was the fact that I was under fast life at that time so I could have crashed. So, I see it as a blessing as well because I don’t know what would have happened. But when I look at it, I’m like, ‘Damn! I should have taken that Wizkid’s deal.”
