Shaibu, counsel shun probe panel for disobeying court order

Embattled Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and his lead counsel, Prof. Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), yesterday shunned the second-day sitting of the seven-member panel, headed by Justice Stephen Omonua.

They contended that the panel’s sitting was in disobedience of the March 28 interlocutory order of the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo.

The panel was put in place by the state Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to probe sundry allegations against Shaibu.

The Legal Officer of Edo State House of Assembly, N. U. Ibrahim, announced his appearance with two other lawyers.

Members of the panel fixed today for the final adjournment to enable Shaibu or his counsel to open the defence.

The lead counsel to Shaibu at Wednesday’s inaugural sitting averred that participating in the proceedings of the panel would amount to “fait accompli”.

The SAN contended that the panel’s continued sitting mounted to contempt of the court.

He added that all parties in the FHC suit ought to obey the interlocutory order, which asked them to show why the injunction to maintain the status quo ante bellum, pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice, should not be granted.

The order also directed the parties to appear before the presiding judge on April 8 to show why the relief sought by Shaibu should not be granted, particularly the enforcement of his fundamental human rights tabled before the court by the deputy governor.

The defendants in the suit Shaibu filed at the FHC in Abuja before Justice Ekwo are: Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Department of Security Services (DSS), Omonua (representing himself and the members of the panel); the Edo State Chief Judge, and the House of Assembly.

Protesters kick against plot to remove Edo Dep Gov

Peaceful protesters, comprising women, men and youths, on Thursday kicked against the move to remove Edo Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu.

The supporters of Shaibu protested under the aegis of Peace Movement and PDP Faithful while they carried placards bearing various inscriptions including: “Shaibu is our next governor, no going back”; “No to impeachment of Edo Deputy Governor” and “We want peace in Edo State.”

The protesters vowed to mobilise members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other Edo residents to work against Governor Godwin Obaseki’s anointed governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, if Edo lawmakers continue with the plot to remove Shaibu.

The spokesman of the protesters, Gafata Emmanuel, urged Edo lawmakers to give peace a chance and halt the impeachment move.

The Chief Press Secretary to Shaibu, Ebomhiana Musa, assured that efforts were on to resolve the matter with leaders of PDP across Nigeria stepping in ahead of the commencement of campaigns on April 24 and the governorship election on September 21.

The Deputy Governor of Edo State Philip Shaibu, has raised the alarm over a fresh plot to impeach him following his emergence as a factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the governorship election scheduled for September 21.

Shaibu, who disclosed this during a media parley with journalists from Edo State in Abuja yesterday, said the impeachment move was revealed to him by his team.

On his part, the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured that his candidacy will deliver victory to the party when the election is held in September.

He also extended an olive branch to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Dennis Idahosa and other party members who were opposed to his candidacy during the election, asking them to work with him for the success of the party in the governorship election.

Shaibu, who has had a running battle with his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, vowed to carry on with his preparations even if doing so would cause his impeachment by the state House of Assembly.

The returning officer in the PDP governorship primary and Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, On Thursday announced Asue Ighodalo as the winner of the delegate election, having polled a total of 577 votes.

However, in the parallel primaries that took place at the Benin residence of the Deputy Governor, the returning officer, Bartholomew Moses, declared Shaibu the winner, saying he won “with over 300 votes.”

Shaibu, however, regarded himself as the authentic candidate, describing the primary election that produced Ighodalo, who is backed by Governor Obaseki, as nothing short of a social party attended by “people who wore aso ebi (ceremonial uniform) from all over the place.”

Shaibu, who defected to the PDP from the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Obaseki, in 2020, said his office has been subjected to all manner of degrading treatment by the governor, adding that he is the man to win the election for the PDP.

He said: “Even as we speak, my team has been calling me that, ‘Look at what these people are doing. They are saying they are going to impeach you; that you have gotten too far.’ They are threatening to impeach me.

“And I said, well, if fighting for my rights and all of us collectively fighting for my rights as in the constitution that triggers impeachment, so be it, because fighting for my rights and saying I must contest the election is my constitutional rights and cannot be taken by anybody.

“So if constitutional right is why they will now trigger impeachment, the courts are there; they will interpret it.”

Shaibu, who described Ighodalo as “my far elder brother,” however, urged the PDP to know that the lawyer-turned-politician does not have what it takes to win the poll.

“If the party wants to win the election, they will not go for Ighodalo. If the party wants to win the election, the people have spoken, and they have spoken very loud and clear.

“If people can stand bullets to say this is who we want, then the party should follow that direction,” he added.

The deputy governor said that he has appointed former APC Deputy Chairman, Edo State Chapter, Pastor Kenneth Asekomhe, to chair a committee to reach out to Ighodalo’s camp to forge a common front for the PDP in the election.

“He is the chairman of the committee that I have set up to reach out to the Ighodalo group for us to have a discussion to see how we will go, because it is only him that is not on board,” he said.

Shaibu also said he was working with the National Vice Chairman (South-South), Mr Dan Orbih.

“The leader of the legacy coalition is Dan Orbih. We are working together and that is why it is important that Ighodalo joins the legacy coalition, because the coalition is those that were in APC that moved to PDP to meet those that were already in PDP.

“Those that were in PDP that we met are the legacy. The coalition now is that we joined the old PDP moving together because we don’t want to hear new and old PDP, and that is why we call it a legacy coalition,” Shaibu stated.

On whether the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the primary election that produced him, Shaibu answered in the affirmative without going into details.

“INEC and the party were there, but I will not disclose a lot. If we don’t go to court, fine. But if we do go to court, all this information will be unveiled,” he said.

My candidacy will deliver Edo to APC, Okpebholo assures party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer in Edo State governorship election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, yesterday extended an olive branch to other aspirants, their supporters and party members in the state.

He called for unity among the leadership and members of the party ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

In his acceptance speech made available to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Okpebholo paid special tributes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Edo State APC leader Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the people of the state for standing on the side of equity and justice.

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, who was the Chairman of the election committee, on Friday declared Okpebholo the winner of the Thursday rerun governorship primaries of the party.

Okpebholo polled 12,433 votes to defeat other aspirants who contested the primary election.

Accepting his victory, the APC flag bearer said his candidacy would reclaim Edo State for the party and reunite it with the Government at the federal level.

He acknowledged President Tinubu’s insistence on equity, fairness and justice, as well as the roles by his fellow senators, especially the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, which created a level-playing field for him to emerge as the candidate of the party.

Commending Senator Adams Oshiomole, the leader of the party in the state despite the initial their differences, Okpebholo insisted that the former governor remains his leader, adding that he will play a critical role in securing victory for APC in Edo State.

He said: “Primaries have been won and lost. It is time to begin the real process of saving Edo State from the hands of clueless leaders who have failed to meet the expectations of the people.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in ensuring a level-playing field is something I treasure. I want to also appreciate the national chairman of the APC and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for standing with the people of Edo State.

“My colleagues in the Senate, especially the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, other aspirants who stepped down for me, APC leaders in Edo State, Edo people who joined in the clamour for a free and fair process, I appreciate you all.

“To my leader, Adams Oshiomhole, I appreciate your guidance over the years. Despite the differences, you remain my leader and I know that you’ll lead the way that will earn us victory in September.

“In the coming days, we will speak more on developments and carry our people along on a list of things we intend to do that will rescue Edo State from the present quagmire. We deserve better and we will get a better deal.

“Today, the APC family in Edo State has made a bold statement by choosing God over mammon, development over inanities and love over hate. It has been clear to every discerning mind that Edo State has gone on the wrong path of development with the elitist style of governance with little regard for reality.

“The journey to resetting our dear state by strengthening her HEARTBEAT and actionable development begins now by your reposing confidence in me as the flag bearer of our great party, the APC. I shall leverage on the collective strength of all of us and the passion for a greater Edo.

“I am humbly requesting all my brothers and sisters who contested the primaries with me to put the contest behind and join me in the onerous task of making Edo State heart beat again with development across the broad spectrum of human endeavour.

“This journey of meaningful development has no respect for tribal and ethnic inclinations or religious calculations. It is building Edo by Edo people. I will immediately embark on visitation to our political leaders and my co-contestants for unity of purpose.

“We are all in it together and by God’s grace, our great party, the APC, will return to Osadebe Avenue come November this year.

“I have with due reverence to God and great respect to humanity accepted my nomination as the flag bearer of our great party, the All Progressives Congress. To God be the glory.”

Idahosa approaches appeal committee, protests ‘injustice’

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, yesterday approached the party’s appeal committee to seek justice over Friday’s declaration of Senator Monday Okpobholo as the party’s flag bearer for the September 21, 2024 election.

He insisted that he was victorious in the party’s direct primary election held on February 17, which he said was duly acknowledged by APC’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

The youthful Idahosa declared yesterday that the “purported” return of Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, as winner of the shadow poll be set aside while he should be reinstated/declared the winner of the primary election.

He said: “The primary election was duly held on February 17, 2024 as scheduled, with 12 aspirants participating. I won and was returned winner, having garnered 40,453 votes, which was the highest scored among the 12 aspirants that participated.

“The gubernatorial primary election committee also prepared a report, duly signed by all its seven members, detailing the various steps culminating in my victory at the primary election, pursuant to extant and applicable provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999; the Electoral Act, 2022; APC’s Constitution and Guidelines.

“In confirming the due conduct of the election, Senator Hope Uzodimma (Chairman of the committee/Imo State Governor), posted the following message on his X (formally Twitter) handle, @Hope_uzodinmma1, as follows: ‘I was delighted to announce Hon. Dennis Idahosa @Idahosadennis, as the winner of our peacefully-conducted governorship primary in Benin City. His resounding victory, marked by the highest votes count, reflects the trust and confidence our party members have in his leadership. I commend all aspirants and their supporters for upholding the peace accord, demonstrating maturity and commitment to our party’s values. Remember, the party belongs to us all. This is not a defeat, but a testament to our collective strength.’

“I was surprised when, on February 20, 2024, a press statement surfaced, indicating that the National Working Committee (NWC) considered a report and resolved that the governorship primary election had not been completed and fixed February 22, 2024 for the completion of the primary election process. I found the statement unusual.”

Idahosa, the representative of Ovia Constituency in the House of Representatives, also reiterated that nomination of a governorship candidate must mandatorily be by democratically-conducted primary election, where there were multiple aspirants seeking to fly the political party’s flag, and that the law did not make provision for multiple/substitute primary poll in the absence of the withdrawal or death of the winner.

He said: “Our party (APC) ought to be guided on the path of legality and avoid actions that can cause avoidable negative legal consequences for the party.

“On February 22, 2024, even though there was no outstanding process from the primary election of February 17, 2024 to be concluded, the primary election committee, with the same members who had signed the earlier report, except for Governor Hope Uzodinma, were in Benin City.

“Instead of indicating which part of the earlier primary election the committee was to conclude, in the course of the day, it proceeded to conduct another primary election, purportedly across all the 192 wards in Edo State.

“Surprisingly, it announced results that did not tally with the votes from the wards, obtained at any validly or duly-conducted primary election and/or the 18 local government areas. Consequently, I urge that the purported return of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the primary election be set aside while I am reinstated and/or declared the winner of the election.”

Idahosa appreciated all APC faithful across Edo State for their massive and unwavering support towards his governorship aspiration, assuring that he would never take the show of love and confidence for granted, going forward.

He maintained that the declaration of “fictitious” primary election results by the Senator Bassey Otu’s (Cross River State Governor’s) committee represented the highest level of rape on democracy ever witnessed in Edo State.

The governorship aspirant said: “Events in the last few days may have been very disappointing and demoralising to a lot of people, as your votes seemed not to have counted, going by the process and declaration of fictitious primary election results of what happened in the field on February 22, 2024 re-run election in the 192 wards of the state.

“Let me assure you all our teaming supporters that I shall explore all the party internal mechanisms to resolve the issues, and seeks justice. Where that does not work, I shall communicate with you all on our next line of action.”

Ganduje saved APC from disaster, says Lukman

A former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has commended the party’s highest administrative organ over the outcome of the Edo State governorship primary election, saying it saved the party from disaster.

He said if the Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led NWC had not promptly intervened and upturned the February 17 primary election, the exercise would have caused a drift and confirmed APC as an undemocratic party.

Lukman, the immediate past National Vice Chairman (North West) of the party, reacting to the outcome of the APC Edo State governorship primary in a statement in Abuja on yesterday, said the process of the exercise and the outcome were indications that the party was returning to the path of its founding fathers.

He noted that if the party had allowed the outcome of the February 17 exercise to stand, it would have headed for another electioneering disaster in Edo State.

It will be recalled that the controversial primary polls held on February 17 with the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma as the chairman of the electoral committee saw the emergence of three candidates — Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Senator Monday Okpebholo and Hon. Anamero Dekeri.

Based on the protests and legal threats against the exercise, the party replaced Uzodinma with the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Out, who conducted the rescheduled election that produced Senator Okpebholo as the APC governorship candidate for the September 2024 election.

  • Edo guber: I won’t be bullied out of race, says Philip Shaibu

Edo guber: I won’t be bullied out of race, says Philip Shaibu

The deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has pledged to resist intimidation and continue his push to get the PDP ticket ahead of the gubernatorial election slated for September 21.

He claimed that his participation in the Edo governorship contest was aimed at preventing special interests from restoring businessmen to positions of authority.

Shaibu made this commitment shortly after submitting his governorship nomination form to the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, January 25.

He said: “We started the journey of rescuing Edo State in 2006, and we were conscious of what we wanted to achieve.

“We said that we needed to take our state back and return it to the people, and we did take the state back and return it to the people. Along the line, something happened, and the state is about to be hijacked again, so we said no.

“This election is another challenge; they want to take the state from Edo people and return it to businessmen, and we are saying no! Because Edo state cannot return to Egypt.

“Edo State will continually move forward, and the only way it can move forward is if power resides with the people. PDP says power to the people, not power to business friends or business colleagues.

“I will tell the leadership of PDP that some of us have been harassed. I have received a lot of intimidation, but unfortunately for me, it is like a cross that God has asked me to carry.

“All my life has been a life of harassment and intimidation, but in all the intimidation, I have always come out successful.

“This PDP primary is also going to be the same because now they are buying people. They have bought all the elders, but they have not been able to buy the youth.

“All the elders have bought them, except the elders who have their youths in mind. This is another challenge.

“It will get to a time when the money they are using to buy those guys will bring some of the money to me, and I will use some of it to campaign so that the PDP will win.”

Shaibu further said: “I am not looking ruffled because I knew the result from the beginning. I know when I will win an election. When I am not intimidated, that means that the election will not be successful.

“The intimidation and harassment show the character of my victory. When you don’t intimidate me, I don’t win an election.

“By the grace of God, our support is organic; it is not procured. I am not an aspirant that is being pushed; I am not an aspirant that is cut off from the people. The voters know me; they touch me; they feel me.

“As we speak, we are already receiving the blueprint of what we want to do in Edo State. I have already set up a committee to decide what we are going to do. I understand the feelings of the people. We already have our plans for what we are going to do.

“Edo State now has a midterm election, and as the governor of the state, if you are a newcomer or an outsider, before you understand what to do, you are already one year in office, and as you are entering the next year, you are already preparing for the election.

“So if you don’t know or understand how governance in Edo State works—no experience—you will just forget about the original plans you have.

“I have been in the legislative house for 8 years and not just a passing member; I was the majority leader of the House back to back, and I was chairman of rules and business in the government house. For eight years now, I have been the deputy governor.

“The functions I have been given by the governor—sports, immunisation, revenue—turned it around from 1.7 billion to 4 billion. I digitalized our collections.

“The ‘agberoism’ is no longer there; they now wear suits. In immunisation, we were number 34 when I took over, and in three years, we became number one consistently for two years.

“I was able to reorganise the system. I discovered that other ailments that can be prevented through immunization for adults and women, such as cervical cancer and hepatitis B, which is a killer disease and contagious, can be prevented through vaccines.

“I was able to bring immunization under one roof, and today the national government adopted what I started four years ago in Edo State to become a national programme on immunization under one roof.

“I turned it around, and it was very low-cost. I digitalized the process of bidding when it was handed over to me and was able to save 4.5 billion for the state. That is to tell you about the level of transparency and accountability that we brought in.\

“In all my transactions, I audit all my accounts by both internal and external auditors. Before I present any of my reports, I audit them, and that is why I have not received any queries.

“I am the first chairman of the National Sports Festival that will do that, and I also presented the same document to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and presented it to all state and national agencies, including the EFCC. That shows our level of transparency and accountability.

“I am contesting for governor today, not because Philip Shaibu has inordinate ambition, but because my ambition is to save Edo State from businessmen who now want to take over the state.

“We have already dealt with the issue of godfatherism, but it is rearing its ugly head again. I am happy that the governor told us that even if he is trying to bring somebody in as a godfather, we should deal with him.

“We are standing on the mandate of the people. My support is organic, and with Philip Shaibu, the PDP will retain its seat in Edo State.

“If you give me this ticket, from the day I am announced as the PDP candidate, the Labour Party, APC, YPP, and SDP will all move to the PDP, and there will be a mass movement of people coming into our party.

  • Edo’s Philip Shaibu bites the bullet

Edo’s Philip Shaibu bites the bullet

After agonising for weeks about whether he should contest the governorship or not, and then enduring reprisal for months from Governor Godwin Obaseki determined to ensure his deputy does not succeed him next year, Edo State deputy governor Philip Shaibu has finally decided to throw his hat in the ring to contest the 2024 governorship election. The feud between the governor and his deputy broke into the open in September when Mr Shaibu dragged the governor and the legislature to court over what he termed a subterranean move to impeach him for daring to indicate interest in next year’s governorship poll. Mr Obaseki had been hostile to him, he said, since August when his political ambition came to light. In fact, the feud between the two men had been simmering since February 2022 when the voluble Mr Shaibu warned that he would turn against the governor should the latter attempt to play the godfather over the 2024 succession. The governor noted the threat and bided his time.

That time came last September when Mr Shaibu went to court. With alacrity, the governor bared his teeth, gave the deputy governor the cold shoulder, embarrassed him at state functions, and eventually kicked him out of the Government House into exile in a nondescript office nearby at Number 7, Osadebey Avenue. Chastened and humiliated, but immoderate as ever, Mr Shaibu ate crow before the whole country, in terms that amplified his total lack of principles. “I am missing my governor and by the grace of God, He will touch the governor’s heart and touch all of us and even those that are between us,” Mr Shaibu began ignominiously. “I mean well. If there is any mistake I have made as a human, it is not out of wickedness because I know I’m not wicked. I have a very clean heart. I want to use this medium to appeal to Mr. Governor that if there is anything I don’t know that I have done, please forgive me so that we can develop our state together.”

For a few crazy days, it seemed the deputy governor’s blandishments would work, especially with the governor who is himself unaccustomed to nobility driving the knife deeper into his deputy’s back in the manner he eventually accepted the apology. Sadly, the rapprochement was too good to be true. By last week, it was clear Mr Shaibu was simply baiting the governor, hoping that his boss would reset the relationship to its pristine days. But Mr Obaseki is an old warhorse who knew his sabre and could predict the enemy from one hundred miles away. He accepted his deputy’s apologies quite alright, but he was cautious about a man who thought nothing about ‘betraying’ him and who was flippant about it. He would bide his time again. True to prediction, and fearing that the governor was taking too much time in resetting and restoring the relationship he had craved and alluded to, Mr Shaibu went for broke and bit the bullet. The first time he broke ranks with the governor, Mr Shaibu loved the taste of blood, especially seeing the governor so flustered and livid. Practicing ‘betrayal’ a second time would do nothing spectacular to hurt a man who was already down and needn’t fear any fall.

Though the deputy governor claims to be consulting, it is all but clear he has made up his mind. He will contest the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary, and if he wins, he will go on to fight for the governorship. Here is his argument to justify his final break with fear and with Mr Obaseki: “With the 2024 Edo governorship election fast approaching, the state cannot afford to experiment again with someone who does not understand the politics of the state or the needs of the people. Edo people need practical governance and you cannot experiment again with somebody that does not understand the politics of a good state and the needs of the people…Are we going to experiment with a new person again? And the person will spend the first four years learning on the job and he will spend another four years trying to embezzle, set up his businesses in the name of consolidating on the gains of the first term. Or do we need a governor that from day one will hit the ground running?”

After playing the rhetorician so elegantly, Mr Shaibu threw this clincher in response to the governor’s argument about zoning and fairness: “Whereas other senatorial districts have had more than one turn in the governorship position in the state, Edo North had only one turn. We have had four governors from South, two from Central and only one from North. Just like my ambition to be the deputy governor was not mine, but I made myself available, so also the ambition to be governor is still not mine. I’m only making myself available.” Here are two extraordinary things in one. Firstly, his foes interpret zoning from the perspective of the Fourth Republic, starting from 1999. But Mr Shaibu goes farther back than 1999 to give his audience a more comprehensive background of the Edo sons who have had the privilege of governing the state. The PDP and Edo public will determine which perspective to choose as the campaigns begin and the aspirants become known. Second, Mr Shaibu is not just a rhetorician, he is alarmingly also an equivocator. The public adorned him with the robe of ambition as deputy governor, he says; they will do the same again as they clothe him with the ambition of governor. In other words, he is not greedy for power. It is unlikely he believes himself.

How far can he go? Not very far, it seems. No matter how much he detests the governor’s godfather status, he will be unable to match Mr Obaseki’s resources in fighting for the PDP ticket. He will also not be welcome in the All Progressives Congress (APC) should he take flight from his party, for the leading opposition party in the state is wary of those with betrayal in their genes. Indeed, should Mr Shaibu find accommodation in a third party, he will fare very badly in the poll. Does this mean Mr Obaseki will have his way in enthroning a successor in 2024? If Edo agrees with his perspective on zoning, and if the PDP produces a more acceptable candidate than the APC and Labour Party (LP), he will get his way. But ultimately, being a betrayer himself, it is hard to see the governor retaining any hold on whoever he installs. He flabbergasted ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole, and wiped the smile off the face of ex-governor Nyesom Wike, his backer at a point in time in his moment of distress. He is as unscrupulous as they come. Those who live by the sword, as Mr Shaibu will doubtless be attesting in the months ahead after coming to grief, will also die by the sword. It is karma; but in these parts, it is the beautiful art of politics.

Edo Deputy gov ejected from Govt House complex

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has relocated the office of his estranged deputy Philip Shaibu outside the Government House Complex, Benin as their relationship takes a turn for the worse.

Shaibu, who was physically stopped by Obaseki’s security aides from exchanging greetings with the governor at a church service last Sunday, will now operate from a building formerly used by the State Public Procurement Office in Benin.

The building is located at 7 Dennis Osadebey Avenue, a short distance from the deputy governor’s former office in the Government House.

It was undergoing renovation yesterday with a signpost newly erected putside the gate.

The signpost carries the inscription “Office of the Deputy Governor, NO 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, GRA, Benin City.”

The building was commissioned on December 16,2014 by the then  Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Contacted yesterday by phone on the development, Communication and Orientation Commissioner Chris Nehikhare said:   “If there is Edo State government’s signboard at the entrance, stating that the new building is now the office of the deputy governor of the state, then it must be so.”

Twenty four hours after last Sunday’s showdown in the church, the state government disbanded Shaibu’s media crew after the deputy governor walked out of a colloquim organized by government.

He claimed that his media aides were prevented from accessing the event with him.

The DG is currently in court over allegation that his principal wants to get him impeached with the aid of ethe state House of Assembly.

Obaseki and the Assembly have denied the allegation.

The governor accused Shaibu of planning a coup against him, but Edo deputy governor insisted that he remained loyal to the governor.

  • Edo 2020: Obaseki under pressure to drop Shaibu

There is pressure on Governor Godwin Obaseki to drop his Deputy, Hon. Philip Shaibu, as his running mate for next year’s governorship election.

The pressure is said to be coming from some All Progressives Congress leaders in the Estako axis of Edo North senatorial district.

Shaibu is regarded as a confident and ‘son’ of the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole but the leaders have asked for his removal as a condition for them to support Obaseki’s second term bid.

It was gathered that the leaders have penciled down some names to be presented as Shaibu’s replacement with a view to whittle down his powers ahead of 2024 when the governorship seat will be zoned to other senatorial district.

Those pressing for Shaibu’s removal, according to sources, are said to be from Auchi, Fugar, Okpella, Jattu, Owan East and Agenebode.

An APC chieftain who spoke on anonymity said part of Shaibu’s sins were that he opted to support Obaseki‘s second term agenda and the role he played between silent wrangling between Uzairue and Auchi.

A top government official however said Governor Obaseki would decide Shaibu’s fate in November when his administration clocked the third year.

President of the Estako Solidarity Forum, Mr. Saidu Momoh, who confirmed the pressure to drop Shaibu said the group would wait for Obaseki to formally declare for second term before taking a stand.

  • Edo 2020: Group rally support for Obaseki/Shaibu re-election

A socio-political group, the New Phase of Edo has declared support for Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu’s re-election in next year’s gubernatorial election in the state, arguing that the development strides recorded in the state in the last three years must be sustained beyond 2020.

One of the leaders of the group, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha, in a chat with journalists, said that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has brought a renewed understanding of what governance can be, with its focused, methodological approach to governance that is as humane as it is liberating and inclusive.

Osaigbovo, who is a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, said, “In Edo state, we are privileged to have a government run by Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has made our state a standard bearer in a number of development initiatives. The state government has shown uncommon zeal in pursuing an industrialisation roadmap that is transforming the state into an investment haven for big-ticket projects.”

He said the group, New Phase of Edo, remains resolute in support of the governor’s reelection and would rally other groups and supporters to ensure that the Obaseki/Shaibu ticket is returned for a second term in office.

He stressed, “We are very sure that Edo people would want this government to continue in office because they have been treated to a refined, dignified government that they can be proud of, a government that has placed development at the heart of its initiatives and ensured that every penny spent by government is to better the lot of the average Edo person.

“The numerous initiatives and programmes strewn across the length and breadth of the state are a testament to the governor’s undying passion to see Edo stand tall among the league of states in Nigeria. So, for these and more, we are solidly behind the governor.”
