Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Phillip Shaibu, has inaugurated a 32-member Advisory Committee aimed at repositioning the Institute to meet global standards.
During the inauguration at the NIS conference hall in Lagos, Shaibu emphasised the importance of the committee’s role in executing a 10-year strategic plan he developed.
This roadmap includes infrastructure renovation, curriculum enhancement, and the establishment of international-standard facilities such as a paramedic centre and specialised training centres for FIFA, FIBA, ITF, and other federations.
Shaibu highlighted the need to revamp Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, including workforce development, dual curriculum implementation, and elite sports promotion.

He expressed concern over Nigeria’s underwhelming performance at a recent African athletics championship hosted in the country and stressed the urgency of change.
The DG also reassured potential private sector partners of accountability and transparency in managing investments.
The committee, made up of seasoned sports technocrats, is expected to leverage its expertise to transform NIS into a globally competitive institution.
Committee Chairman Musa Kida praised the initiative and expressed optimism that the collaboration will provide athletes with top-tier training and preparation, ultimately enhancing Nigeria’s standing in international sports.
