  • Boko Haram: Pilot of ill-fated chopper dies a month into marriage

THE pilot of the Nigerian Air Force helicopter that crashed in combat against Boko Haram on Wednesday was only 25 days into his marriage when he lost his life defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The Bayelsa born Flight Lieutenant Perowei Jacob died alongside Flight Lieutenant Kaltho Paul Kilyofas ,the Co-Pilot; Sergeant Auwal Ibrahim, Flight Technician; Lance Corporal Adamu Nura, Gunner; and Aircraftman Meshack Ishmael, Gunner, when their Mi-35M helicopter crashed while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion, Damasak in Borno State.

Jacob got married only on December 8, 2018.

Nigerians have taken to the social media to pay tribute to him and other victims for their gallantry and patriotism.

Deronke Eunice Abebi writing on her Facebook wall said  of him: “Flight Lieutenant Pereowei Jacob got married on the 8th of December, 2018, he died on the 2nd of January 2019, while providing cover in fighter Jet for troops battling Boko Haram terrorists.

“Making his young beautiful wife a widow after three weeks and two days of marital bliss.

    May his soul find rest.”

Miebi Senge said: “Unfortunate, but he’s a soldier. Farewell, Flt.Lt. Pereowei Jacob, while Rotimi Adebayo wrote: “May the Almighty God grants his great soul eternal bliss and grants his family the fortitude to bear his loss.”

In a condolence message on Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari said the sacrifice of the fighters will never be in vain.

“These fine officers and men lost their lives striving to guarantee our safety and protection as a people and a nation,” the President said.

  • Independence Day rehearsal: Pilot dies as two Air Force planes crash in Abuja

A  Nigerian Air Force pilot yesterday died after two planes crashed in Abuja during a rehearsal ahead of the 58th Independence Day celebration on Monday.

Involved in the crash were F-7Ni aircraft.

The pilots  had successfully ejected from one of the ill-fated aircraft only for one of them -Squadron Leader Bello Baba-Ari-to die, apparently from injuries.

Air Force spokesman , Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola confirmed the development.

He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully announce that one of the pilots who successfully ejected from one of the F-7Ni aircraft that crashed earlier today (yesterday) has passed on.

“May his soul  rest in peace. Additional details on the incident will be communicated later. ”

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar  immediately  set up a board of inquiry to investigate the accident, while President Muhammadu Buhari delegated the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, to visit the two surviving co-pilots of the crashed aircraft  at the Defence Intelligence Agency Hospital, Abuja.

Baba-Ari was laid to rest last night at the Military Cemetery, Airport Road Abuja.

Among those who attended the burial were Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonishakin.

Others were Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Siddique Abubakar, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, hundreds of officers and men of the Nigerian Army, as well as friends and relatives of the deceased.

Senior military officers and colleagues of the deceased could not control their emotions as they wept at the burial.

Abubakar said yesterday’s rehearsal was supposed to be the last before the Monday event.

He said:  “I think that is the tragic nature of our job. As a combat pilot, sometimes  terrible things happen and this is one of those days.

“These officers have been rehearsing for the 58th independence anniversary of their country.

“Everybody was full of enthusiasm, excited to be part of the celebration.Unfortunately, we had this incident this afternoon.

“We have set up a board of enquiry to clearly understand what really happened. This was supposed to the last rehearsal before the actual flying on the 1st of October.

“It is very unfortunate that we lost one of them, but we are also consoled by the fact that we have two of the pilots here who are in stable condition. They have been visited by the Chief of Staff and I have also visited them

“This is something that has to do with the profession of flying combat aircraft and sometimes you can’t avoid these things from happening.”

Commiserating with the survivors at the DIA Clinic, Abba Kyari conveyed  Buhari’s grief over the accident.

Wishing them a quick recovery,he said: “The President said we should come and see you and wish you well. He is fully aware.

“He  has been informed on what happened. We are proud of your service to your country.”

  • Student pilot force lands aircraft in Kaduna

THE Air Force yesterday said a student pilot force-landed a Diamond 40 Trainer Aircraft on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis while “on a solo mission as part of flying training at the 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna.”

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, in a statement yesterday, said the pilot sustained minor injuries and have been taken to a military facility for treatment.

The statement reads: “A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) student pilot force-landed a Diamond 40 Trainer Aircraft on the outskirts of Kaduna while on a solo mission, as part of flying training at the 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna.

“The incident, which happened today (yesterday), was caused by an airborne emergency that could not allow the pilot fly the aircraft back to base. He, therefore, force landed the aircraft but with minimal damage.

“However, the student pilot, who was the only one on board, suffered minor injuries and is already receiving treatment at the 461 Nigerian Air Force Hospital, Kaduna.

“The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has directed the constitution of a board of inquiry to determine the exact cause of the incident while efforts are on to recover the aircraft.”

  • Air Force honours pilot

    Air Force honours pilot

THE Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday immortalised a pilot, Squadron Leader Promise Gbenekannu, who died in the cockpit while providing logistics support to troops fighting terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Enlisted into the military on September 24, 2000 and commissioned on September 24, 2005, Gbenekannu, 35, suffered a cardiac arrest and died on May 18, last year, while piloting one of the C-130 aircraft in Borno State.

Despite the sudden seizure, the young officer was said to have successfully landed the logistics aircraft before he passed on.

For his sacrifice and diligence, the Chief of the Air Staff  (CAS) Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar named a newly constructed 6 by 3 block of flat inside the Sam Ethnam Air Force Base after him.

The officer’s widow, Dr. Justina Gbenekannu, who was at the event, said she was happy her husband gave his all in the service of the nation.

She said he led a short but fulfilled life, thanking the NAF for honouring him.

The woman said: “Life has not been the same after the passing of my husband. It has not been easy coping with two kids alone. Sometimes, it gets me down emotionally.

“But I am happy because he led a fulfilled life and as short as it was, his name has been written in the annals of the NAF

“If the dead could see, I know that he would be happy wherever he is because of the honour.

“The NAF is proud of him and we, his family members are also proud of him. He died in active service. “We were married for two years and four months. Those were the most favourable moments of my life.

“He was a humble man. He was a husband and a father. There are times I wished he was here to continue playing his role as a father to our kids. Our kids will miss him because they won’t be able to say exactly how he was because they are still very young.”

Abubakar, who was represented at the inauguration by the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ibrahim Yahaya, said the project formed part of infrastructural renewal programme of the NAF, which was initiated in all bases for the good of personnel and their families.

He said: “The project has been named after one of our fallen heroes who died onboard the C-130 aircraft while on a logistics support mission for troops fighting insurgency and terrorism in the Northeast. The fallen hero was a C-130 pilot Squadron Leader Promise Leton Gbenekannu.

“The Sam Ethnan Air Force Base being one of the foremost bases in the NAF and the home of logistics command, is critical to the successful conduct of NAF operations

“It is, therefore, only appropriate that such a base received a commensurate attention in terms of the provision of facilities for the general wellbeing of the personnel and their families.

“We have embarked on the construction of new quarters, as well as renovation of dilapidated buildings to address the infrastructural decay of the past.

“Accordingly, providing decent housing for officers, airmen and airwomen remain one of the first priorities of our policy thrust towards ensuring that NAF personnel and their families live in befitting accommodations and are better positioned to respond to various exigencies of the service.

“Arrangements are in top gear to address many other areas of infrastructural deficit, including the renovation of more accommodation facility, as well as rehabilitation of roads and drainage systems in the base.

“It is hoped that this would create enabling environment and motivation for personnel to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently.”

Hailing President Muhammadu Buhari for his support to the military, Abubakar said: “This has enhanced our ability to conduct counter-insurgency operations and also contend with other emerging security challenges across the country.

“We must sustain our efforts to reposition the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.

“We acknowledge that the human being is the most important in every organisation and equipping them appropriately is central to the achievement of success in securing Nigeria’s air space

“We, therefore, remain committed to continuous upgrading, reforming and building of new facilities of part of capacity development drive in all NAF units.”

  • Oyedepo: Pilot reveals details of averted plane crash

Oyedepo: Pilot reveals details of averted plane crash

Details of the recent averted plane crash involving the Presiding Bishop of the Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo and his wife has been revealed by the pilot of the aircraft Captain Samuel Adegoga.

Narrating how the accident happened , a pastor in the church, Adebisi read the report  from the aircraft’s pilot during a thanksgiving service on Friday.

“The main malfunction we had in the Cyprus-Israel flight was a stabilizer twin-motor failure. During the said flight that we had the twin motor failure, the auto-pilot could no longer exert the desired pressure to keep the aircraft in the required altitude for stability flight.

“The captain disconnected the auto-pilot,  took and returned the aircraft to the required altitude for that phase of the flight. Because the aircraft was out of trim during this takeover, the aircraft abruptly pitched off with much pitch force.

” The captain counteracted it with a pitch down force. These counter forces caused turbulence and movement in the cabin and cargo hold. Heavy items in the cargo section fell from their compartment, making a loud noise, ” the pilot wrote.

” We thank the God of this commission for making the pilot to react promptly. Similar failures in the past have resulted in fatal accidents due to lateness of pilot’s reaction, ” Adebisi added.

However, while the pilot saw the incident as mechanical malfunctioning, Bishop Oyedepo said the averted air disaster was a spiritual attack.

He went on to explain that a few days before he embarked on the journey, his  ‘father in the Lord’ and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye had had a revelation about the incident and came over to his house unannounced to pray for him.

Bishop Oyedepo’s words: “According to the word of God, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord will hit the earth, there will be a restoration of sonship and fatherhood to the body of Christ.

” On Friday preceding the journey that we made, my father in the Lord showed up at 6:30 early in the morning and saw a vision and wasn’t sleeping, and said, ‘Lord, Lord, why seek the living among the dead? No, no…’ So, he took off and landed here before 6:30am. No, there was no idea that he was coming, and there was no discussion after it. The heart of the father will be drawn to the heart of the son to defend.

” Understand what I’m saying. You don’t have inheritance in a pastor; you don’t have in a teacher. Many of us have teachers all our lives. Did they share anything with you when they died?   Did any teacher write your name in his will? You only have an inheritance with a father. A good man leaves an inheritance for his children to inherit. Fatherhood is not an accolade, it is a revelation. So, that was not technical failure, it was a spiritual attack that Jesus averted.

Every prophet sent to you is ordained a father. Elisha shouted: ‘My father! My father!‘ He was the son of Sherphat. Elijah was not his biological father, but he was a prophet sent to him…Every prophet sent to you is sent as a father, not as brother, not as an uncle, not as a friend. I have enjoyed this kind of covering all my life. ”

Corroborating the testimony of Bishop Oyedepo, his second  son, Pastor Isaac Oyedepo, the Resident Pastor of Living Faith Church, Lokogoma, Abuja said this on October 8 :  “Very early last week Tuesday, Daddy G. O  (Pastor Enoch Adeboye) went to Bishop Oyedepo’s house unannounced, no telephone calls.

“Daddy G.O said ‘God told him to go and pray for Bishop’.  Pastor Isaac further said the message was so urgent that Daddy G.O came without Mummy G.O (his wife), it was that urgent. So Daddy G.O was just entering everywhere and praying.

“On Friday of the same week, Bishop, his wife and three other keys members ‘re on their way to Israel, when suddenly, I mean suddenly,  the auto pilot failed in the air but the Everlasting Arms showed up, miraculously brought them down, no scratch.’

Among the gospel  musicians who ministered at the special thanksgiving service were Evangelist Bola Are, Evangelist Adelakun and his Ayewa group .

  • Fishing cage: Bello to kick off pilot scheme

FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has expressed determination to ensure the success of the Federal Government initiative on the development of fishing cage aqua culture in the Territory.

The Minister gave this assurance when the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Economic Management Team, Mr. Dolapo Bright paid him a visit in his office.

Bello expressed joy that the FCT is one of the five states chosen by the Federal Government for the development of the fishing cage culture project, adding that the programme is in tandem with the efforts of the Federal Government to diversify the economy and create more jobs.

According to him, “FCT will be interested in the three levels of the project which include locating some of the fish cage aqua culture projects in accessible bodies of water for the purpose of serving astourist attractions; establishing some as economic empowerment projects for rural residents and developing others as entrepreneurship ventures for the youths of the Territory.

“We are happy that the FCT has been selected to be among the states that would develop the pilot scheme of this project which we consider to be a very important focal point for job creation.”

The Minister, who lamented the uncontrolled fishing activities going on at Jabi Lake, directed the Department of Fisheries to ensure proper monitoring and regulation of the net size used for fishing, in order not depopulate the water bodies.

Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Dolapo Bright, stated that the fishing cage aqua culture project was part of the social investment programme of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He said the project which would be financed by the World Bank is designed as part of the efforts at the diversification of the economy, job creation and producing fish for protein.

He however decried the situation where the nation is spending over $1

Billion dollars annually in the importation of fish when it has all it takes to be self-sufficient in the area.

  • EFCC grills pilot who flew N1.299b cash for Fayose, Obanikoro

EFCC grills pilot who flew N1.299b cash for Fayose, Obanikoro

A pilot has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) how he flew a former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, with N1.299 billion cash for Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Capt. Ahmed Bashir Borodo said the cash was wrapped with green military tarpaulin bags before it was loaded onto the chartered aircraft registered HS125-800 5N-BMT, owned by  Gyro Air Limited.

He said the bags were so heavy that only three people could carry one at a time.

Also, the General Manager of Gyro Air Limited, Mr. Jide West, has disclosed that about $25, 200 was paid for the two chartered flights from Lagos to Akure and Akure to Abuja.

EFCC detectives grilled Borodo and West  at the weekend, The Nation learnt.

The session was part of the ongoing probe of Fayose for allegedly receiving the N1.299billion slush funds from Obanikoro through his associate, Abiodun Agbele.

About N4.745billion was paid into Obanikoro’s company Sylva Mcnamara’s office by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for the 2014 Ekiti governorship.

The slush funds had been  traced by EFCC  to Obanikoro,  Fayose, three firms  and a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore.

Borodo said he only flew the plane in line with the directive of his airline’s management.

He said: “On the 17th June 2014, I was advised around 0700 hours by my Flight Operations Department that we would be operating a chartered flight to Akure from Lagos with estimated departure time of 0830 hours.

“The client was Musiliu Obanikoro, Minister of State for Defence at that time.

“I arrived at the airport at about 0730 hours to prepare for the flight along with my colleague, Captain Olubiyi Famuyiwa and cabin attendant Uyi Okoro. Minutes later, the minister’s aides came to the aircraft with some bullion vans. They started offloading the contents, which were big green tarpaulin bags. Military bags precisely.

“The ADC to the minister was dressed in Navy uniform. This is all I can state now.”

The pilot recalled that the bags were so heavy that three people carried one. He said: “When we noticed that only about three people could carry the bags because of the weight, we told them that because of the weight, we could only take  about eight to nine bags.

“The minister who had disembarked  at that time from his vehicle pleaded with us but we said our aircraft was too small to carry all the bags. We loaded the bags. The minister, his ADC and a friend boarded the aircraft and we departed to Akure , Ondo State.

“ When we arrived at Akure Airport, some soldiers came and there was a bullion van as well to carry the baggage. We departed empty to Lagos on the 17/06/14. On the 18th of June 2014, we were sent from Abuja to Akure to pick Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro and take him to Abuja. He boarded without any luggage with his ADC and we proceeded to Abuja to drop him.”

West gave an insight into how the chartered flight service was procured at $25,200.

He said: “On the 15/16 of June 2014, Lt. Adewale O Eruka called me for a flight to Akure scheduled for 17th and 18th of June 2014 on the instruction of Musiliu Obanikoro. I contacted operation  and the flight was carried out as detailed below: 17/6/14 – Lagos – Akure – Lagos

“I was informed that they carried the bags to Akure with some passengers as indicated in the manifest.

“On 18/6/14 , the flight was  Abuja – Akure – Abuja to  pick up the passengers from Akure back to Abuja. The aircraft was empty from Abuja but brought the passengers back to Abuja. Passengers as indicated in the manifest.

“The flights were paid for; $25,200 was paid for both flights and this was arranged by Lt. Adewale. The crew on the flight on both occasions were: Capt. ‘Biyi Famuyiwa whose service has been terminated by Gyro Air Ltd; Ahmed Borodo the second pilot who accompanied me to EFCC today; and  Uyi Okoro the cabin crew who resigned her appointment from Gyro for further studies abroad. Resignation and termination letters attached.

”I also have a text on my phone dated 19/6/14 from Lt. Adewale detailing how payment will be made for the chartered service.”

As at press time, there were indications that some officials of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Nigeria Air Management Agency (NAMA) may appear before the EFCC, which is intensifying its probe of Fayose.

“We are likely to invite more people for interrogation,” a source said.

The EFCC at the weekend sealed off six choice duplexes belonging to Fayose, a development which has caused disquiet in the camp of the governor.

The duplexes, worth N1.350billion, include four in Lagos and two in Abuja which were bought through his associate, Abiodun Agbele and Fayose’s sister. Mrs. Moji Ladeji.

Fayose’s sister has, however, gone to the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti to file claims that one of the Abuja duplexes legally belong to her.

According to sources, preliminary investigation by the EFCC indicated that the houses were bought with slush funds, including the alleged diversion of the N1.219billion smuggled to Fayose by Obanikoro and kickback cash from contractors

Operatives of the anti-graft commission have marked the duplexes. They are: 44, Osun Crescent and 32, Yedseram Street in Maitama, Abuja as well as houses 3, 4, 6, and 9 in Plot 100, Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

It was gathered that the EFCC had traced how the funds were wired to pay for the duplexes.

According to a document, while the duplex in Osun Crescent was allegedly bought for N200million from Skye Bank Plc, the one located in Yedseram Street in Abuja was purchased at N270million from a businessman, Rabi Kundili.

All the houses in Lagos were paid for by Agbele, the detained associate of the governor who is also under investigation.

  • Nigerian pilot set for historic solo world flight

Nigerian pilot, Mr. Ademilola Odujinrin, says he is preparing to embark on a historic solo flight around the world in April.

Odujinrin spoke with aviation correspondents at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos yesterday.

He said he wants to be the first African to embark on the adventurous journey, which has been accomplished by only 114 persons globally.

The journey, which will take him across the seven continents of the world, is expected to take up to six weeks depending on the weather condition.

It is expected to start and finish in Lagos and is supported by the Transcend Project, a non-governmental organisation.

Odujinrin said the visionary expedition was set to demonstrate the potential capabilities of Nigeria and its people to achieve extraordinary feats.

His words: “The project aims to inspire Nigeria’s teeming population to begin to conceive a world without borders, with unbridled dreams to transform the Nigerian narrative whilst shattering all stereotypes.

“The planned solo expedition will be achieved flying the aircraft, Cirrus SR22. It has a total payload of about 439kg.

“This particular aircraft with registration number N313CD has been specifically modified for this journey with additional long-range tanks and an HF radio installed for longer stretches of the journey,” he said.

The pilot, who is married and has two children, said he had so far acquired over 4,000 flight hours and worked previously with Nigerian carrier, Arik Air.

According to him, he is undergoing physical and psychological training to prepare him for the challenges of operating a flight without any assistance from another person.

The Project Director, Transcend, Mr. Ladi Ani-Mumuney, told reporters at the event that the journey would cost over a million dollars and appealed for support of well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations.

Ani-Mumuney said the objective of the adventure was to inspire youths that follow their dreams and also promote the image of Nigeria outside the country.

He said that monies realised from the historic event would be channeled to support selected charities, particularly children living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the Northeast.

Adetunji Odujinrin, the pilot’s father, said his son’s adventure was a laudable project which needed the support of all and sundry.

  • Unveiling redesigned Honda Pilot

    Unveiling redesigned Honda Pilot

Despite being more spacious and functional than most of its competitors, the Pilot is actually smaller and lighter than other crossovers. This relatively low weight combines with a stiffer structure to make the 2016 Honda Pilot impressive, controlled and less cumbersome, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

The redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot has a new styling that more closely matches the smaller CR-V.

Big and blocky on the outside but underneath just a roomy, family-friendly crossover, the previous-generation Honda Pilot, perhaps, tried a little too hard to look like something it wasn’t. This time around, the fully redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot has a more traditional crossover appearance. It’s probably a more honest approach, and it’s backed up by new improvements that have made this third-generation Pilot a better choice for a three-row large crossover than ever before.

Honda focused much of its attention to the Pilot’s interior, which is more modern, more refined and easier to see out of. The Pilot was always roomy and versatile, but extra leg and headroom in the third row, in particular, makes it friendlier for passengers of all sizes. There are also more bins and cup-holders for personal items. Up front, a new eight-inch touchscreen interface brings the Pilot up to date in terms of technology features and controls. The screen, standard on all but the base LX, gives the Pilot’s dash a clean look, though it’s not intuitive or responsive to use as some other touchscreen systems.

The rest of the cabin benefits from improved, softer materials and additional acoustic materials that quell noise. Honda also adds a top-of-the-line Elite model this year that is loaded with such features as a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs and a heated steering wheel. Even if you don’t get the Elite, though, Honda is offering a new collection of safety features (available on all but the base LX) that includes forward collision mitigation and lane departure prevention.

The ride and handling are also improved thanks to a stiffer structure made with more high-strength steel and a weight reduction of about 250 pounds. The smooth ride is worthy of a luxury car, and although handling still isn’t sporty, it’s controlled and the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system provides impressive traction around corners (not to mention snow, mud or sand). The reduced weight also teams with a pair of new transmissions and 30 extra horsepower to raise fuel economy and provide more willing thrust.

As a result of the 2016 changes, the Honda Pilot is now one of the best large crossovers. However, there are several strong choices. The Toyota Highlander has been top-rated choice with strengths that closely mirror those of the well-rounded Pilot. If space is major concern, the Chevrolet Traverse can’t be beat. The wagon-like Ford Flex is equal parts stylish and versatile, while the Hyundai Santa Fe stands out for its value. Each are worth a look, and while we will need more time with the new Pilot to declare it a class leader, its well-rounded attributes (not to mention Honda’s reputation for reliability and high resale values) make it seem like a pretty good place to start when searching for a large family SUV.

    Body Styles

The Pilot is a three-row crossover SUV. It is offered in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and the new Elite trim levels. All seat eight people with the exception of the Elite, which has second-row captain’s chairs that reduce capacity to seven.

The new Pilot has a new trim level, the Elite. It comes packed with every feature as standard.

Standard features of the LX model include 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, air-conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, active noise cancellation, and a 60/40-split folding third-row seat. Electronic features include a seven-speaker sound system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB port.

The EX model adds automatic headlights, fog lights, LED running lights, heated mirrors, keyless ignition and entry, the Honda Lane Watch blind-spot camera, three-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power adjustable driver seat (with two-way power lumbar), the eight-inch touchscreen interface, HondaLink smartphone-enabled features and an upgraded seven-speaker sound system with two additional higher powered USB ports, satellite radio and Pandora Internet radio control. Also included is the Intelligent Traction Management system that adds a Snow mode for the front-drive version and Snow/Sand/Mud modes with AWD.

The EX-L gets a sunroof, a power tailgate, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, one-touch sliding second-row seats, a four-way power adjustable front passenger seat, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The top-of-the-line Elite model further adds 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, automatic high-beam headlight control, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross traffic alerts (replaces LaneWatch), automatic windshield wipers, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs (reduces maximum seating to seven people), a heated steering wheel and HD radio.

    Powertrains

Every 2016 Honda Pilot comes with a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. LX, EX, and EX-L models are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Touring and Elite get a nine-speed automatic with steering wheel shift paddles and an automatic stop/start system.

Front-wheel drive is standard. The optional all-wheel-drive system not only sends power front and back, but also between the left and right wheels for improved handling. On EX trims levels and above there are also Snow, Mud and Sand settings that maximize the effectiveness of various vehicle systems in low-traction scenarios.

Honda says it expects estimated fuel economy ratings to be 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway) with front-drive and the six-speed. They are 23 combined (20 city/27 highway) with front-drive and the nine-speed. Opting for all-wheel drive lowers each estimate by 1 mpg.

When properly equipped, front-drive models can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while AWD models can pull 5,000 pounds.

    Safety

Standard safety features of the 2016 Honda Pilot include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. The Honda LaneWatch blind-spot camera is standard on the EX, EX-L and Touring, while the Elite gets a blind-spot warning system with rear cross traffic alerts. The Touring and Elite also come with front and rear parking sensors. Available for EX and EX-L and standard on Touring and Elite is the Honda Sensing package that includes forward collision warning, a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking, road departure intervention, and lane departure warning and intervention systems.

    Interior Design and Special Features

The 2016 Honda Pilot has the most versatile interior this side of a minivan. There is a multitude of handy bins and twice as many cupholders as seats, while the maximum cargo capacity of 83.9 cubic feet is competitive with most competitors. Importantly, the area behind the third row benefits from a removable floor panel that frees up a useful amount of storage space when all seats are in use.

A special feature for the Pilot are second-row seats that tilt and slide forward with the push of a button (standard EX-L and above). It’s handy since it reduces the strength and effort needed to move the seat, but the resulting pass through area is still on the small side of the segment.
