    Northern senators condemn Plateau attack

    The Northern Senators Forum on Monday condemned the recent attacks and unfortunate loss of lives, and the destruction of property in Plateau State.

    The forum, in a statement by its chairman, Senator Abdullaziz Yar’Adua, said the incident was a reminder of the insecurity plaguing some parts of the country.

    The forum also expressed its commitment to working with the government and security agencies to develop a robust security framework that protects the lives and property of citizens.

    The statement reads in part: “On behalf of the Northern Senators Forum, we hereby condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent attacks on five communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau state.

    “The death toll, which has risen to about 50, with many more injured and missing, doesn’t represent the values we stand for as a nation.

    “This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the insecurity that has plagued some parts of our nation, and we cannot afford to let it become the new norm.

    “We wish to commiserate with the families of the victims, the Plateau State Government, and the people of Plateau State over this tragic incident.

    “We wish to also commend the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for his efforts to restore calm and prevent retaliation between various ethnic groups.

    “His leadership is a beacon of hope in these trying times, and we urge him to continue on this path.

    “The Northern Senators Forum renews its commitment to working with the government and security agencies to develop a robust security framework that protects the lives and property of our citizens. We cannot afford to fail in this endeavor.

    “This recent attack is a wake-up call for all Nigerians. We must come together to build a safer, more secure future for ourselves and future generations.

    “We owe it to the victims of these senseless attacks to act decisively and ensure that such incidents do not recur.

    “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We pray for those who lost their lives and ask that God grant the families the fortitude to bear the loss. May the bereaved families find comfort in this mourning period.”

    Plateau attack: 40 more bodies recovered as death toll hits 52

    • Search and rescue teams comb for more victims

    The search and rescue operation that followed this week’s apparently co-ordinated attacks on some communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has yielded additional 40 bodies, officials confirmed yesterday.

    The recovery has now taken the death toll in the attacks on Mangor Tamiso,  Daffo, Manguna (Tagai),  Hurti and Tadai to 52.

    The state government said some arrests have been made in connection with the Wednesday night mayhem.

    Chairman of Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard, Farmasum Fuddang said 31 persons were given a mass burial on Thursday.

    According to him five under age victims were burnt to ashes at Hurti village, 11 were killed at Ruwi village, four persons killed at Manguna with one killed at  Dafo.

     The condemned the attacks.

    It said some suspects have been arrested but did not put a figure to the arrests.

    Information and Communication Commissioner Joyce Ramnap in a statement in Jos, extended government’s condolences to bereaved families and said every effort was being made by the security agencies  to stem the wave of killings.

    The Mutfwang Administration, the commissioner added, had deployed strategic measures to enhance intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms in collaboration with security operatives.

    She asked religious, traditional, and community leaders to reinforce the message of peace, unity, and lawful engagement while residents were advised to remain law-abiding, support security efforts, and utilize official channels for security concerns.”

    Residents of the affected communities said the invaders shot sporadically, catching the people unawares.

    Three die, several injured in fresh Plateau attack

    Gunmen have killed three persons in a fresh attack in Bokkos local government of Plateau state.

    The attack, The Nation learnt, took place in Sha village on Monday around 10:30pm.

    The Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Council, Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, confirmed the incident. 

    Six other persons injured in the attack are receiving medical attention in Bokkos.

    In his reaction on the killings, Hon Amalu said: “This is a season of jubilation and excitement across our land yet some individuals, driven by malicious intent, have chosen to cause harm to lives and property. This act is deeply disheartening and unacceptable,”

    The Chairman called on security agencies to take swift action in apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators of the attack. 

    He emphasised that maintaining peace and harmony remains a top priority for his administration, urging residents to unite and protect their shared heritage.

     He assured the local government was collaborating with security agencies to prevent future occurrences.

    No fewer than 15 people, including women and children, have been killed by attackers in Gidan Ado village, Ganawuri Chiefdom of Riyom Local Government of Plateau State.

    It was gathered that the victims were killed about 8pm on Sunday night .

    National President, Irigwe Youth Development Association Mr Ezekiel Bini, who confirmed the killing, condemned the attacks, describing it as barbaric. He said the coordinated killing of innocent persons less than 48 hours to the Christmas celebration was unacceptable.

    He called on the security agencies and government to curtail any security challenge and protect the citizens ahead of the Christmas and new year celebration.

    The Police Command had last Thursday taken security measures ahead of Christmas and restricted in five local government areas from 6pm to 6am to avert security challenges.

    Chairman of Riyom Local Government, Sati Shuwa, who visited the village in company of his Deputy, Gwong Song and Secretary, Abraham Tongjing, also condemned the act.

    Shuwa, who attended the mass burial of the dead, who included a pregnant woman and one year old child, said it was sad, especially as the local government held a security meeting with stakeholders, security agencies, community leaders on their peaceful existence less then 24 hours before the incident.

    He expressed sadness that despite the meeting, some people still went ahead and put tears in the heart of the villagers.

    He said with evidence and a visit of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) to the scene, drastic measures would be taken to arrest the perpetrators.

    The first traditional ruler of Ganawuri Chiefdom, Ata Aten Yakubu Chaimang and National President, Ateng Development Association, Clement Chup also condemned the killings.

    Governor Caleb Mutfwang had been preaching peace ahead of the yuletide before the incident occured.

    Last December, close to Christmas, over 300 persons were killed in Mangu Local Government Area.

  • Six killed on New Year Eve in Plateau

    At least six persons have been reported killed in Barkin Ladi local government of Plateau state when some unknown gunmen launched fresh attack on two communities.

    The two communities are Nding village in Fan district and Dorong village in Foron district all of Barkin Ladi local government in Plateau North senatorial zone.

    The Christmas Eve attack is the third in the series that took place between Christmas and new year in the state, resulting in the death of 9 persons. The first being that of 27th December where 5 persons were killed.

    In the latest attack of 30th December, eyewitness of the attack in Nding said, “At about 6:30 pm last Sunday evening, Youth Fellowship of Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Gassa and Nding communities of Barkin Ladi LGA are reported to have been ambushed at Nding’s bridge when the unsuspecting victims were heading back from celebrating Christmas at Wildlife Park in Jos, Plateau State Capital.

    “We gathered that the attack claimed at least 4 lives while the injured ones have been rushed to hospital by sympathizers”

    Though the attackers cannot be clearly identified, the victims alleged that the attackers must be Fulani herdsmen suspected to have been terrorizing the peace loving inhabitants of Fan District and its environs before the Yuletide.

    In another attack which occurred on the 30th of December at about 10pm, some unknown gunmen invaded Dorong Community of Foron District with guns and machete. The attack led to the death of Miss Janet Markus & Dung Pam according to eyewitnesses.

    Confirming the killings, Plateau State Police Command speaking through its public relation officer DSP Terna Tyopev said in a statement that, “On 30/12/2018 at about 1815hrs, the Plateau State Police Command, Jos received a distress call from one Samson Bitrus of Gwom Nding Village that on the same date at about 1800hrs some unknown gunmen attacked a Peugeot 504 Station Wagon on the way to Nding Village.

    “The Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command CP Austin I Agbonlahor having received the information immediately assembled a team that raced to the scene of crime but discovered on arrival that the attackers had left the scene of crime.

    “On the scene of crime, three persons were seen motionless and they were immediately taken to the Barkin Ladi General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. Three injured persons were also taken to the Hospital. Out of the three persons that were injured one of them died while receiving treatment. The remaining two persons in the hospital are responding to treatment.

    “Citizens are advised to go about their lawful businesses and volunteer information that could lead to the timely arrest of the perpetrators of this dastardly act to face the full weight of the law”

    The police could not, however, confirm the attack in Dorong villages where two teenagers were killed.

    Unknown gunmen on Friday night invaded Kura Falls community in Gashish District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing three residents.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Terna Tyopev, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Jos said the attack occurred on Friday night and yesterday morning.

    “We received information this morning at about 7 a.m. that residents of Kura Falls were attacked at about 9:30 p.m. and the early hours of Saturday by unknown gunmen,” he said.

    “This resulted in the death of three persons identified as Dawala Bullet, 30; Fidelis Richard, 31; and Iliya Doro, 60.

    “We have mobilised to the area to ensure normalcy and quell any further attack and breach of the law,” Tyopev said.

    The PPRO said investigations were ongoing to track and arrest the perpetrators who must be made to face Justice.

    At least 10 persons were on Friday killed by gunmen in Daffo District of Bokkos local government area of Plateau State.

    The Councillor representing Daffo District in Bokkos LGA, Mr. Danjuma Wabas, who confirmed the figure, said the victims were given a mass burial.

    He said those killed included five women, four men and an infant.

    Many houses were burnt down during the attack while fear-stricken villagers fled to Daffo, Bokkos and other areas of the state.

    The house of a former deputy governor of the state was among the buildings burnt in the attack.

    Worst hit villages were Ngakudung, Farunhai, Mhorok, Ganda, Warrem-Hotom, Maidunna and Josho.

    Gunmen kill five in fresh Plateau attack, as President visits

    Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed five persons in Dantako and Nzharuvo communities in Miango District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State even with President Muhammadu Buhari on a visit to the state.

    ASP Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Jos.

    According to him, the incident that occurred on Thursday night left scores severely injured and many properties destroyed.

    “Yesterday (Thursday), gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked and killed four Irigwe persons at Dantanko and a Fulaniman at Nzharuvo communities in Miango district of Bassa local government.

    “The deceased persons are identified as Emmanuel Joseph, Christopher Joseph, Peace Joseph, Henry Audu and Samuel Isah.

    “Samuel Isah has since been buried, but the remaining four are deposited at the Jos University Teaching Hospital’s (JUTH) mortuary,” he said.

    The PPRO explained that those injured, including a four-year old child were receiving treatment at Enos hospital, Miango.

    He said investigations were ongoing to unravel those behind the dastardly act.

    Buhari returned to Abuja yesterday at the end of his two day visit to Plateau.

    Nine die, four injured in Plateau attack

    Nine persons died in Tuesday’s attack on Rim, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. Four were injured.

    The gunmen allegedly laid an ambush for their victims, after trailing them from Tuesday Market in Makera.

    Residents accused soldiers of conniving with the culprits. The situation has created tension in neighbouring Diyan, Gako, Jol and Hoss.

    A survivor, Chuwang Dangyang, said the gunmen were on military uniform, and with some Fulani men, which is why he suspects them to be soldiers on Operation Safe Haven.

    Police spokesman Terna Tyopev, however, said 11 died in the attack.

    But the military debunked allegations that its officers are responsible for the attack.

    Media Officer of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) in Jos, Capt. Adams Umar, said: “It is wrong for anyone to think our soldiers will connive with criminals to kill the same people we are here to protect. Such allegations can only come from mischief makers.

    “It is true the attack was done by gunmen. The victims were ambushed while returning from Makeran Market. As soon as we got information of the attack, the commander led troops to the village and spent the night there with his men, combing the surroundings for the gunmen.

    “We are on their trail; our men are combing bushes around the scene. We have deployed helicopter for aerial surveillance, apart from ground troops, to ensure the gunmen don’t escape.

    “No arrest has been made but we are doing our best to get them, we are tracking them from both air and ground.”

    Chairman of Riyom council Emmanuel Damboyi has called for the arrest of Fulani leaders in Riyom. According to him, they vowed to attack Berom communities, if the body of a missing Fulani boy was not found.

    According to Damboyi, the Fulani leaders, at the Security Council meeting, made the threat last week.

    “I think the Fulani leaders are not ready for peace, they should be arrested and questioned for these killings.”

    Suspected gunmen kill 20 in Plateau village

    At least 20 persons were killed in a night attack by suspected gunmen at Ancha village in Bassa local government area of Plateau State.

    The attack took place in the late hours of Thursday.

    Scores of people were severely injured in the attack.

    The spokesperson of the state police command, Terna Tyopev, confirmed the attack but could not give details.

    “Yes, we are aware of the attack, but we don’t have the details now.

    “We are on our way to the scene of the attack to get first -hand information on the situation,” he said.
