20 -year-old boy kills father’s stepmother in Plateau

A 20-year-old boy, Ibrahim Mutari, yesterday allegedly killed his father’s 70-year-old stepmother, Hauwa Abubakar, in Yanbula community of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Residents of the community and police men from the Laranto Division, who converged on the deceased’s residence, said the suspect attacked the deceased around 3 pm.

Abubakar Shuaibu, husband of the deceased, condemned the killing, describing the incident as cruel and inhumane.

He accused Ibrahim of strangling and stabbing his wife before fleeing the scene.

A daughter of the deceased, Ummi Ahmed, also accused Ibrahim of killing their mother. She alleged that before the killing, the suspect had vowed to take revenge for a fight that ensued between him and their elder brother, Musa, after he was stabbed with a knife last year.

She said: “Ibrahim and our younger brother, Musa, fought last year and, in the process, Musa stabbed him in the stomach. He was rushed to the hospital. While in hospital, Ibrahim vowed to take revenge on either the deceased’s children or their mother, and today he’s actualised his threat.’’

One of the nurses warned that visitors be cautious, saying his utterances were dangerous. Ummi further explained that their mother had taken care of Ibrahim while he was hospitalised.

She said: “The deceased was his caregiver; she took care of him until he was discharged. Despite her kindness, he went ahead and killed her.

The suspect’s father was raised by the deceased, whose mother died when he was a baby. The deceased took him in and cared for him like a mother until he reached adulthood. To reciprocate, the father of the suspect took her into his house and cared for her as a mother until the father of the suspect died.

Spokesperson of the state police command, Superintendent of Police Alabo Alfred, is yet to respond to inquiry by The Nation on the incident.

Troops of 3 Division Nigerian Army, under Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP), have foiled a planned bandit attack on communities in Plateau State, killing five bandits during an intelligence-led operation.

A military source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the operation was conducted yesterday as part of Operation Peace Shield in Wase Local Government Area of the state.

The source said the troops ambushed the Dutsen Zaki–Odare Forest axis after receiving a report that some bandits were mobilising to attack adjoining communities.

Apart from killing the bandits, two AK-47 rifle magazines loaded with 11 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two machetes and a knife were recovered.

Also, gunmen struck at Bum village of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing seven residents.

In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary, Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM),Rwang Tengwong, said the residents were attacked about 11:00 p.m. on December 31, last year.

He added: “The incident came despite an earlier security alert, warning that several communities in Jos South council had been earmarked for possible attacks. Sadly, the Bum community has fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence.

“This latest attack adds to the growing list of violent assaults on innocent rural communities in Plateau State, further deepening concerns over the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace and celebration.”

Kidnappers of the 28 travellers abducted in Zak community of Wase Local Government Area have reduced the ransom from N42 million to N30 million.

The abductors have also demanded the relatives of the victims to provide three new brand motorcycles in addition to the N30 million.

The victims, including men, women and children, were heading to Sabon Layi community of the same Bashar District to attend a Maulud when the bandits intercepted their vehicle and took them to their den.

The kidnappers had on Tuesday contacted the victims’ relatives, demanding N1.5m ransom per person, a demand the relatives said they could not afford, pleading with the kidnappers to release the victims.

However, on Wednesday, the kidnappers slashed the ransom to N30million and asked the relatives to buy three new brand motorcycles.

Babawo Gwadabe, a resident of Zak community, whose seven nephews and nieces, were among the victims, said: “We don’t have that amount. It is huge. The community and relatives have raised a little amount, but they have refused to agree. We are really in tension and apprehension. Even if the money is provided, there is no certainty if they would release them because last year, my father was abducted and N3million was demanded. We paid; yet, they killed my father. We are confused. Only God can help us out of this trauma.”

Five injured as gunmen open fire on herders in Plateau

Gunmen on Sunday evening opened fire on Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) members at the Conoil Filling station, in Jos, Plateau State capital, injuring five.

The group’s state Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the incident, stating that the vehicle, a J5 open body, was carrying eight herders.

Also, the Deputy Chairman of Kara market, Dauda Adam Ciroma, who described the attack as deadly said the herders were attacked around 7:30pm, stating that the police personnel of B Division had arrived the scene.

Dauda explained that after the incident, “police officers arrived at the scene and participated actively in evacuating the victims to the hospital. It the police and I who took them to the hospital. They were badly injured with all of them fractured and sustained bullet wounds.’’

In a statement, Babayo said: “The incident occurred around 6 pm. The victims – eight – were on their way back from Kara market – a cattle market in Bukur – when the gunmen, three on one motorcycle, who were trailing them, stormed the Conoil fuel station and opened fire on them and fled.

“The victims were initially rushed to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) but were later moved to The Potters Specialist Hospital, Jos for treatment due to the ongoing strike in the government hospital.

“This attack is unprovoked because the herders were just buying fuel. The gunmen targeted the herders, and that is why they directly attacked their vehicle and fled. This has become a dangerous trend threatening the existence of Fulani herders in the state.

“We will not relent in calming our members and urging them to remain calm because we believe the incessant attacks against us are meant to provoke us. We are calling on security forces to investigate the incident and arrest the perpetrators.

“We are urging the security agencies in the state to wake up to this dangerous trend and arrest it immediately because our lives, wherever we are – in communities, grazing fields, markets, and other places – are no longer safe,“ the chairman added.

  • APC stalwart hails Mutfwang’s defection, says Plateau now in political mainstream

APC stalwart hails Mutfwang’s defection, says Plateau now in political mainstream

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Yakubu Dati, has welcomed the decision of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to officially defect to the party during its 14th National Caucus meeting in Abuja.

Dati said the announcement by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, confirming Governor Mutfwang’s movement into the party ended months of speculation over his political future.

According to him, the governor’s decision signalled Plateau State’s resolve to move away from what he described as politics of sentiment and align fully with the mainstream of Nigeria’s politics.

He described the defection as a form of homecoming, noting that several states had already discovered that alignment with the centre offers renewed hope and tangible benefits.

“And this action by Governor Mutfwang, while clearly aligning Plateau with the ruling party at the federal level, will unlock greater access to resources, accelerate development projects and enhance national policy influence,” Dati said.

He added that the realignment would help reduce partisan friction, ensure smoother governance and enable faster implementation of infrastructure and security initiatives across the state.

Dati cited the examples of former Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi; former Cross River State governor, Ben Ayade; and former Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, who, he said, embraced similar political realignments for the benefit of their states, noting that Delta and Akwa Ibom states were already enjoying such dividends.

“Alignment with the centre, especially under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, provides political stability and comfort to deepen development through leadership capacity and strategic negotiation,” he said.

He further observed that defections often come with lawmakers, commissioners and local government officials, a development he said strengthens the ruling party and consolidates its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Dati, Governor Mutfwang’s defection is necessary for the sustained development of Plateau State.

Looking at the broader political implications, Dati said that with Mutfwang’s defection, the entire North Central region is now governed by the APC, a development he described as a sign of cohesion that would enable greater consolidation across the zone.

Dati said, “As an indigene of Plateau State I cannot but say Eureka to this development with the epiphany that my state has realigned not just with the centre but with its siblings in the North Central zone giving our dear state a stronger identification and sense of belonging.

“The North-Central occupies a strategic space in Nigeria’s power map. Frequently courted during elections, it, however, struggles to convert relevance into sustained Federal attention.

“In 1983 under the 2nd Republic, Plateau was the only state that chose to be different in party affiliation with its closest neighbours as Benue, Bauchi, Gongola and Kaduna all belonged to the ruling party at the centre.

“But the consequences were glaring as there was no synergy between the state and the center to complement the drive of our father, Chief Solomon Lar who would have achieved much more with the support of the party at the centre.

“Before Thursday when Mutfwang defected, Plateau reminiscent of the old order, was the only odd one out with Benue, Kwara; Niger; Nasarawa and Kogi all belonging to the ruling party.”

Dati further said, “There are definitely going to be challenges occasioned by this action as some would feel it would dampen their influence on the party. But such considerations are selfish and not forward looking.

“Gov Mutfwang will therefore face the challenge of uniting other members with those who are moving to the APC with him as there are entrenched party factions and rival ambitions.

“Plateau’s APC, long in opposition, carries its own internal tensions hence success for the party will require discipline, inclusion, and strategic clarity to gain from federal alignment and stabilise governance.

“The good thing is that with the alignment, the cooperation of notable party leaders in the state like Hon Idris Ahmed Wase ,the Deputy Speaker of the 9th Assembly will be secured to give APC the needed push to navigate the political landmines.

“In a region long sensitive to political neglect, Gov Mutfwang has done well and taken the right decision to move Plateau State forward.”

Plateau, Chinese firm sign N13b water project to tackle scarcity

The Plateau State government and Chinese company, China Geochemical Company (CGC), has signed an 8 million euros (N13.7 billion) contract for the rehabilitation of the Laminga and Yakubu Gowon dams.

The LOT 11 Plateau State Urban Water Supply Project (PSUWSP) is a counterpart-funded project with assistance from the French Development Agency (AFD) and includes the reticulation and replacing old and laying of new plants within the Jos and Bukuru greater masterplan.

Speaking at the signing ceremony at Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos on Friday, Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, Samuel Jatau, said the water project is a testament to the fact that the government is desirous of making water available to the people of the state.

He said the initial contract was signed by the last administration but was abandoned.

Jatau said, “The contract was inherited from the last administration, in 2019, but no serious action was taken due to lack of payment of counterpart funding.

He said as an agricultural state, apart from domestic use, water is seriously needed for agricultural projects, adding that though the government had received severe criticisms over the problem of water, it had tried to mitigate the problem using other means.

“We are all aware that water is life, and without water we cannot thrive. Agriculture is one of our focal areas as a government and we need water for farming and irrigation. I know that this government has faced criticism from public that we do not care about water, but I think part of that is politics, because even without this contract being signed, or this project moving forward, government has tried to mitigate the problem of water using other means like the procurement of trucks, water tankers and drilling of boreholes.”

He charged the contractors to be conscious of the fact that the contract has timelines and to be completed by 2026.

Managing Director of the Chinese firm, Ke You Cheng, promised that the company will abide by the terms of the contract.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Bashir Lawandi, said that the government will mitigate the effects of the rehabilitation of the two major dams by using water trucks to provide water to communities in the state.
